DVI connection on Monitor - Thunder or HDMI

Hi,
I just got a new monitor that has a DVI connection.  Should I use the thunder port or the HDMI port?  I'm thinking with HDMI I would have to have some kind of extra converter thing right?
Thanks

Have no idea. If this is from the Retina model then from what I hear the Res on external screens is not all that good. Many reports of blurried screens no matter what resolution or connection type is used. Try both pick the one you like the best.

  • DVI connected external monitor now having mouse troubles

Hi Everyone, I'm new. I recently bought a 27inch imac and a DVI adapter to hook up a second monitor. When the second monitor is plugged in and on everything is ok. When the second monitor is unplugged everything is ok. When the second monitor is pluged in but turned off my mouse skips LOTS. Like it lags a bit then will shoot off to the side of the screen. I tried other mice (apple and microsoft) and different mouse pads/none/paper and no difference. I rang applecare (before I realised it was to do with the monitor) and they told me my mouse was stuffed.... Im convinced the imac gets confused when anothe monitor is connected. Others on mac rumors are having trouble also... Any ideas please?
    Cheers
    Jaidan

    Hello,
I can confirm this problem on my iMac 27" of Mid 2010.
At first in June, when i bought it, i had no problem whatsoever connecting my external Samsung 226bw. It worked like a charm.
After some time, maybe a month of daily use, the iMac refused to wake up the external monitor after waking from sleep mode. Now the problem only got even worse, as it now refuses to power up the external monitor when booting too.
The funny thing is it springs alive after a random period of time. (between 2 to 4 hours)
When the iMac is in its 'Im ignoring your external monitor, Sir' mode, my magic mouse is very jumpy and laggy, like described earlier on in this thread. When the monitor comes alive, the mouse behaves normal.
Now i've been looking into this problem quite some time now on the net, and all i can find are mostly confirmations of people having the same problem.
There are some suggestions here and there on what to do, like resetting nvram or the SMC, deleting windowserver preferences files etc, but none of them seem to solve the issue.
Strange thing is that Apple doesn't move a word about this? At least an acknowledgment of some sort, letting us know they are aware of the problem and maybe try to fix it.

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt
    Thanks

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

  • 2011 Mac Mini and Acer x222w monitor incompatible? HDMI to DVI adapter issue

I am totally bummed because I just bought a new Mac Mini thinking I'd be able to use the display from my old system, an Acer x222w, which has both DVI-D and VGA connections. I hooked the monitor up using the HDMI to DVI adapter included in the box with the Mini. On boot, I could see the Apple logo, though it was not centered, and when the set up screen came up to the select language screen, it flashed quickly and then turned to snow.
I was on the phone with Apple support for over an hour trying to troubleshoot this issue. I was a little disappointed that tech support didn't even seem to  be aware that the Mini came with an HDMI to DVI adapter. It was then recommended that I try an adapter for the mini display port, which the 2011 Mini doesn't have.
I was able to borrow another monitor, a Dell with DVI-D, and it worked.
I have searched for specs/requirements that might explain why the Acer monitor doesn't work while the Dell one does. I cannot find anything from Apple. I just assumed any DVI connection would work. Has anybody else encountered this problem? Most of the issues I've found on the forums involve trying to hook up to a home theater LCD TV, which I'm not trying to do. If I had known my monitor wouldn't work, I probably would have just saved up for an iMac.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or tips!

I cannot get the video output from the HDMI to work. I have been using DVI to DVI and replaced the cable with HDMI, however only get a "no signal" message when I try to. I have adjusted the input type on the monitor to HDMI but nothing is being displayed. Is there anything I need to do to output video on HDMI (I assume it should happen just by plugging in)? I haven't had a chance to test the monitor on another PC as yet, but this will be my next option.
    Any suggestions welcome.

Yes, I initially set it up with the HDMI as the only connection, but I also tested having both DVI and HDMI connected at the same time - in this case it detects the model number of the monitor through HDMI and gives me the option for extended desktop etc - however, if I try selecting duplicate screens and then cycle through the input types on the monitor, when it gets to HDMI the screen is just black.
I'll swap the monitor with my TV when I get back home tonight and see what the results are then.
On other thing issue (probably unrelated) is I get noticeable ghosting, especially when scrolling down webpages (dark text leaves a white silhouette) - I'm using the same DVI cable and monitor that I was on XP, the only difference being the OS and the graphics card.

  • Can i connect two monitors to my mac book pro with HDMI?

can i connect two monitors to my mac book pro with HDMI?

I retract my previous "No." If you can live with limited performance (slow refresh/choppy action video/no gaming) on the second external monitor, you could use a USB video adapter and a DVI-HDMI adapter to connect it to a USB port on your computer.

Just a note about the system information that appears below your post: iOS 4.3.3 does not run on Macs, only on iPods, iPads and iPhones. When you're posting about your MBP, it would be more useful to those responding to know which version of Mac OS X you're running. Doesn't matter for purposes of this post, but something to remember for future posts.

  • Connecting Dual Monitors: HDMI & VGA to MacBook Pro (Non-Retina)?

    Whats up Apple Fam,
So i have a MacBook Pro along with a LCD TV i use as an external monitor and its connected via Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
Now, i’d like to add an additional computer monitor, the cable coming out of it will be a VGA. Hence my question; what type of adapter will i need to accomplish my goal while achieving it at the lowest price possible?
My only concern is that the Mini DisplayPort is already being used by the LCD TV. So i’m a bit unsure what to do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks !

You could purchase 2 mini displayport to DVI adapters ($30 ea) and use the 2 Thunderbolt ports. I have one external DVI monitor connected to 1 of my Thunderbolt ports. Works great!
Sorry my mistake. You said non-Retina.

  • Lenovo B570 isn't recognizing a monitor through a HDMI connection.

The title says it all really, every time I connect my B570 to my Benq monitor using a HDMI to DVI cable, the laptop fails to detect anything.
When I connect the laptop and screen using the VGA to VGA cable, the laptop picks up the screen without any trouble at all. I bought a new HDMI to DVI cable and the laptop is still failing to recognise the monitor.

    hi flytch
can you check if the cable works first? (you can use another computer to check it if you have)

  • DVI connection to second monitor doesn't work

When I had the connection from my Mac Pro to my two monitors (20" Cinema display and 19" Princeton monitor), I had the black screens for a few seconds for both monitors then return to normal. It happens anytime. I read the forum and changed the VGA cable to connect the 19" Princeton monitor and now both monitors work fine.
Do I have to live with the VGA cable option or anyone know how to utilize the DVI connection capability of Mac Pro please help?

    Hi Joe,
I tried to locate the right slot (x16) by going to
Expansion Slot Utility and changed from #1 to #2. It
showed my configuration of the PCI card now is x16 or
    fully speed.
The problem is still the same with DVI connection to
two monitors. Any other suggestions would be
    appreciated.

I'm fresh out of idea's. I assume that your card is a 7300GT, correct? I had an out of the box failure with mine and Apple replaced it. I was lead to believe that there were quite a few failures with the card. Interesting, they didn't even want the old one back.
I'd go the Applecare route next and see what they say. FYI, I have two of these running three monitors (all apple flat panels) all on DVI connectors.

  • MacBook Air no longer connecting to monitor via HDMI after recent update.

    Hi all,
My MacBook air typically has no issues connecting to my external ASUS monitor via Thunderbol-HDMI port. However, after the recent Mavericks OSX update that was pushed a couple days ago, my monitor says that there is no signal. My MacBook air screen flickers slightly once connected (typical behavior, as it begins to mirror the screen on a scaled resolution shortly there after) but then nothing happens.
    How can I fix this?
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try System Preferences->Energy Saver:Automatic graphics switching (Deselect the checkbox).
If that doesn't work you might try changing the resolution and refresh rate for the monitor in System Preferences->Displays, or downloading an app called SwitchResX (shareware) and lowered the resolution just slightly .
One other solution if possible - restore to time before update from backup.

My office just bought me an iMac and I absolutely need to hook up a second monitor but there is no DVI connection on it, just a Thunderbolt. What do I do? Please help ASAP!!! The imac is a 21.5" and they also already bought an HD 21.5 ASUS LCD monitor to attach to it. I'm really trying to make this setup work but this is becoming a nightmare. Any suggestions? I looked up  different VGA adapters but the only options for this would be a usb-vga connection which doesn't work on macs. Can anyone tell me if this new Thunderbolt connection will work in some way? Thanks

Using the Thunderbolt port attach a Mini-display to DVI so long as the Asus display is equipped and capable, otherwise Mini-display to VGA will also work. The Thunderbolt port is ahead devices  which are not yet available to take advantage of the increased capacity in speed. Until the devices and connection cables are available, just use the port as a Mini-display port.

  • T420 can't use dual DVI connected monitors

I have a T420 connected to The ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 90W (433810U* - United States), DVI port 1 connected to monitor and VGA connected to second monitor using extended desktop.  This configuration works fine but when I hook up both DVI ports to my monitors only one of the screens work and in the Intel Graphics  and Media Control Panel only shows one monitor. I have 2 different cables 1 DVI-D dual-link and 1 DVI-D single link, the dual-link works with the VGA setup but with the 2 DVI connections only the monitor with the single link cable works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
