DVI-I (Female) to VGA (Male) ?

[Also posted in All Apple Cinema Displays]
Hey all,
I know its probably been asked a thousand times, but after a quick seach I havnt found specifically what I am after.
I'm trying to hook 2 20" Apple Cinema Displays to a Dual Monitor 2 port KVM switch.
Trouble is, the monitor input for the KVM switch is VGA only.
I thought it would be a simple converter for $10-$30 for a DVI-I (Female) to VGA (Male) so i can plug the DVI monitor into a VGA port.
I did actually get one, but was awarded with a blank screen.
I have confirmed the KVM works (with dual standard vga screens) and both cinema dislays work (when hooked up directly) so it is defienately the converter that isn't working.
Any suggestions?
Thanks very much...
Ben

You need a DVI KVM switch. The Apple LCDs only accept digital input, so even if you can get the adapters and cables to fit, it won't work with analog VGA.

  • DVI-I female to ADC male

I have an ancient Apple cinema display, 20", that I would like to connect to an 3-year-old Mac Book Pro. I need an adaptor for DVI-I female to ADC male. I'm not sure such a thing exists, and perhaps I need to cobble this together by connecting multiple adaptors. Any suggestions?

You need more than a simple adapter. You need the Apple DVI to ADC Adapter which is a powered adapter that is no longer sold by Apple. They can be found on the secondary market, or if you are lucky as new old stock somewhere at a retailer.

  • NB550D - VGA female to HDMI male adaptor

    Hello,
I need to connect my Toshiba netbook NB550D to a male VGA cable (this is for projection on screen).
I figured I need an VGA female to HDMI male adaptor. However, I am unable to find any.
Has anybody faced this problem before?
All I was able to find is an HDMI male to DVI female. I'm considering buying a VGA female to DVI male (not easy to find either), but it sounds a bit cumbersome.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    > Excuse my ignorance, but when I bought this computer I specifically asked this questions and the seller assured me that it was possible and that all I needed was the rigth adaptor
Well, its possible of course but there is a difference between
    - sending the signal from VGA to HDMI and
    - sending the signal from HDMI to VGA.
Its not possible to convert the analogue into digital but it should be possible to convert digital into analogue signal
So I assume you want send from HDMI to VGA. Right.
Well, this should be possible but using a HDMI to VGA like this one:

  • Does Mini Displayport to DVI adapter support analog VGA signal?

I'm just about to buy a macbook pro. Since the MDP (mini displayport) to DVI and MDP to VGA adapters are £20 a pop, I can only afford to get one. Obviously DVI is better in general, but VGA supports more older hardware, CRTs, and the spare VGA input on one of my displays (where the desktop uses the DVI).
What I'd like to know is does the MDP to DVI adapter also support the analog VGA signal on certain pins (like most physical desktop DVI ports do)? If it does, since I have about 3 or 4 DVI to VGA adapters lying around, I can get the MDP to DVI adapter and use the DVI to VGA adapters with it if necessary, but if it doesn't I might be better off getting the MDP to VGA...

No. Unlike DVI, which in the DVI-I configuration has both digital and analog pinouts, DisplayPort (and mini-DisplayPort) are purely digital. Mini-DP to DVI then DVI to VGA will not work. If you look carefully at the Apple Mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter, you'll notice it's a DVI-D connector - digital pins only.
The Apple mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter contains a digital-to-analog converter.
So, you'll have to choose. If you want VGA, get Apple's mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

  • 24 pin DVI-D to Mini VGA adapter for external monitor

So I am about to buy a 20" Dell lcd monitor and I found out I need an adapter to the ibooks mini DVI port, can anyone direct me towards a 24 pin DVI-D to mini VGA so I can connect this monitor to my 12" ibook?
    Thank You
    Jeff

The iBook does not have a mini-DVD port. The iBook has a mini-VGA port.
The mini-VGA to VGA adapter is the Apple VGA Display Adapter M8639G/A.

  • Can I use the Apple ADC to DVI adapter with a VGA monitor?

    Hey everybody,
I have a quick question. I work on computers fr friends and family as a hobby. I have an ADC monitor and need ot be able to hook up computers with a VGA port on them to it. Can I use the Apple ADC to DVI adapter along with an Apple DVI to VGA adapter to successfully connect VGA computers to my ADC display? I was assuming this would work and ordered both adapters but now I have made myself nervous about weather or not this will actually work. Has anybody out there successfully done this? Thanks for your help in advance everybody.

You can't run an ADC display with a VGA computer without a converter. Adapters won't do it.
a VGA to ADC converter will drive the ADC display directly

you could use it with a VGA to DVI converter
    <http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1310>
It might be cheaper to get DVI graphics boards for the computers and use the Apple DVI to ADC adapter.

Your title says "Can I use the Apple ADC to DVI adapter with a VGA monitor?". If you want to connect a VGA monitor to a computer's ADC port you need the ADC to VGA adapter
<http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1299> You can't use an ADC to DVI adapter followed by a DVI to VGA adapter, because the ADC to DVI adapter doesn't pass the analog video signals needed for VGA.

  • Looking for 30-pin female to lightning male extender

I purchased an iHome clock radio with 30-pin dock back when I had an iPhone 4. Since upgrading to the iPhone 5 and then the iPhone 6+, I've been unable to use the dock. I'd like to find a 30-pin female to lightning male adapter, but I'd like one that has a lightning extender in place of a standard lightning male connector. I have a Spigen Neo Hybrid case on my iPhone 6+ and I'm afraid that a standard lightning adapter will not work without first removing the Spigen case, something I'd prefer to avoid. I know that there are 30-pin female to lightning male cables, but I was hoping to find an adapter/extender. Does such a thing exist? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Chris! After reading a little further, I'm now leaning toward a cable since others have said that a dock extender can sometimes place stress on the lightning port. Since my iPhone can be placed on the table next to my clock radio when using a cable, this is probably the best solution. I have been using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable between the clock radio and my iPhone for audio and the usual lightning power cord for charging, but I thought I might eliminate one cable by getting a dock extender cable. I appreciate your help.

  • Is this possible? USB (female) to ADB (male) converter?

It's 2015, and increasingly, ADB keyboards and mice are becoming rarer to find, more expensive and, sadly, in increasingly poor condition. With the abundance of USB keyboards on the market, it would be nice to have the opportunity to use a relatively inexpensive, easily accessible USB keyboard on my old Macs. Has there ever been any attempt to create a USB (female) to ADB (male) converter? Or perhaps a PS/2 to ADB converter? Is this an engineering impossibility, or might there be some hope with a bit of effort? Thanks!

I've seen an 1987 Apple Keyboard (the first gen ADB) on eBay where someone soldered a USB port and replaced the ALPS chip and it could work on any generic USB driver. It's pretty cool, but I'll try to find a link to that.
The only way without replacing chips/soldering is to get Alphasmart ADB/USB adaptor as this is describing what you want it to do.  (The Alphasmart device was very popular in schools back in the day, and ex Apple engineers started up that company hence the strong Apple connectivity.)
In fact it's probably cheaper than the iMate, probably $10 to 15 less than an iMate. I think people charge a real high premium on those. It beats the iMate, and all you do is plug the ADB to the keyboard (like the Alphasmart) and the USB to the USB port on the PC/Mac. No need for a separate ADB cable like in the case of the iMate.

  • How do I connect my Mac Mini (DVI) to a monitor (VGA) and 2 TV's (HDMI)?  What equipment do I need?

I have an older Mac Mini with a DVI out.  Right now using a monitor with VGA in, and since my Mini came with the adapter, all is good.  However, I'm trying to use this setup to also connect 2 50" TV's that have HDMI's.  What would be the proper setup in order to run the mini and the monitor along with the TV's?  Thanks!

  • Mini DVI to external monitor (VGA) problem/firmware update does nothing

    Hi,
Four months ago I bought a new white 13-inch Macbook (2006 model I believe) along with a handy mini-DVI - VGA adapter. I used a Hanns-G HU196D external monitor which worked fine for a couple of months but then stopped, and had the same problem with a (much cheaper) 'LiteView' monitor. I find it bizarre how they work absolutely fine and then stop, with no damage to the adapter, cable or ports. I've since bought a new adapter and cables + trying out a different monitor and still the same problem...
I've installed a firmware update that describes the exact symptoms, but it's done nothing. Can anyone help me resolve my issue?? It's still under warranty so is it an unusual problem that'll need to be fixed by Apple?
    Thanks

Are you using the mini DVI to DVI followed by a DVI to VGA adapter? That may not work if the mini DVI to DVI adapter does not pass analog video. If that is the case, you need the mini DVI to VGA adapter:

  • DVI to HDMI or VGA to connect to HDTV

Hi I am researching buying a 40-42" LCD or plasma TV and I would like to be able to connect my IMac to the tv. I will mostly be using the TV to watch sports and to watch videos from my IMac.
    1. Will 1080p videos played from the IMac produce good 1080p picture on the tv? I have ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory.
    2. Or would I be better off just going with a 720p tv and playing 720p videos from the IMac?
    3. Go with a DVI to HDMI or DVI to VGA cable? I understand I'll need to get a Mini DVI to DVI adapter also.
    Thank you!

1 and 2. It should work with either a 720p or 1080p HDTV.
    3. Mini DVI to (regular) DVI to HDMI. That will keep the signal digital all the way. VGA is analog. There are cables that have DVI on one end and HDMI on the other end. There are several types of DVI connectors, so be sure to get the right one.
NOTE: HDMI carries audio but DVI does not, so you will still have to run audio from the iMac headphones jack to the HDTV audio input separately.

  • How do I connect my Apple DVI port to a VGA now there is no adapter available

I have a MacBook Pro (15 inch, early 2008) which I use at my camera club for connecting to its projector.  My Apple DVI to VGA adapter clearly has dodgy internal connections leading to a variety of colour casts.  Although only five years old, this adapter is no longer available, which seems an absurdly short time to carry spares unless, of course, that is the life expectancy of a MacBook Pro. I had only used this adapter half a dozen times before it went on the blink, to much crowing from the Windows crowd.  What am I to do?

Welcome to the Apple community Jojoprince.
What exactly are you trying to do, you can't access the Apple TV system from a computer.

  • Connecting DVI Cinema Display and VGA Projector from Minidisplay Port

    Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to get my mid 2011 Mac Mini to send a signal from my MiniDisplay Port to a vga splitter which works fine. My biggest thing is that when I connect my inFocus IN112 VGA Projector the screen shows up from my mac but to connect my Cinema Display it takes VGA so I had to go from the VGA Splitter on one side and use a vga to dvi adapter and my cinema display shows blank? Help Me Please!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I already have a converter on the end of the VGA Splitter to go to the Cinema. The reason I don't use the hdmi to dvi is because with the minidisplay port using vga to the projector and the hdmi going to dvi to the Cinema it makes the projector screen very rough and pixely

  • ATI Radeon HD 5770   DVI Dual-Link to VGA

why my monitor VGA do not work with DVI Dual-Link (with adapter) and work with Mini DisplayPort (with adapter)?
The Support tell me the DVI support only digital signal , it is true or my exit DVI v.Card not work ?
    Thank you

work with Mini DisplayPort (with adapter)
do not work with DVI Dual-Link (with adapter)
VGA must be produced by the Video Card. The adapter just switches the signals around. The VGA signals are in the bar at the end of the connector, the four pins around it, and pin 8.
    wikipedia article on DVI pinouts
If you are using two adapter, adapt directly from the DVI port to VGA with one adapter.
If the pins (shown in pink above) are missing, you cannot get VGA from that port.
