DVI-I to HDMI Cable?

I have a MacBook Pro (Late 2006) 17" that has (what I believe is) a DVI-I port. (Image below). I am looking for a DVI-I (or whatever it is) to HDMI cable so I can display my Mac on my new HDTV (I say that because I'm cheap and just got it in September 2013). Could someone tell me if I'm right about what kind of port it is, and if someone could link me to a cable? I've looked, and found things that are close, but nothing EXACTLY like it.

It won't carry sound though.

  • Screen turns black after connecting TV via DVI adaptor  and HDMI cable

I've just got the brand new MacBook Pro from the Apple Store. It is sensational.
    But one thing doesn't work!
I used my old "*DVI - HDMI cable*" and the new "*Mini DisplayPort - DVI adaptor*" to connect my new MacBook with my SHARP Aquos LCD TV. But the screen of the MacBook just turned black and nothing else happened, even if I removed the plugs. The only thing I was able to do was a reboot.
The HDMI cable worked very well until today with my old PowerBook G4 (I just didn't need the adaptor).
Do I need another adaptor? What is wrong? Any ideas?
    Thank you!

Did you ever resolve this problem? I want to hook up my MBP to my Aquos TV and wondered what cable to get.

Late 2008 17 inch Macbook Pro...OS X 10.6.8.   Screen stays blank no matter what I do..mirror display or not...Only works when I use dvi-d to VGA adaptor.  Is there anyway to hook it up using HDMI ??

    Recommend checking this Toshiba document.
+*Is it possible to use two external monitors on a Qosmio X500?*+

    Yes, it is possible.
Connect the VGA and the HDMI monitor to the related connectors. Now you can use the key combination FN + F5 to activate both monitors.
Choose "HDMI + CRT Extended Desktop". The internal display will turn of.
Note: All three displays (two external and the internal one) can not be activated simultaneously.

  • Sound through DVI-D to HDMI

I recently acquired a refurbished Pavilion P7-1010 running Windows 7. It has no HDMI output, but it does have a DVI-D output. I would like to hear sound through my HDTV's built-in speakers (I do not have an external sound system or speakers). I tried using a DVI-D-to-HDMI cable, and get a picture, but no sound. Is it possible to send the sound out through the DVI-D port?
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Unfortunately DVI-D port(s) only carries video signals NOT audio signals therefore you can not hear sound. You need something like this

  • Mini dvi to VGA adapter to HDMI cable

i have a mini dvi to vga adapter for my macbook (bought in 2007) and that works but I want to connect to hdmi cable to this? But don't exactly know how to do this or if it is possible?

It is my understanding that 'VGA' is analog and HDMI is digital....from what I have read it won't work without a convert
I use a Mini DVI to DVI adapter and then a DVI to HDMI adapter to run the HDMI cable to to TV
    the converter...VGA to HDMI...

    DVI to HDMI

Personally I would shelf the VGA adapter and go with the new cable set up...if you already have the HDMI cable then an adapter from DVI to HDMI would be in order

  • Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter  from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

This is the picture of all the ports from my iMac
This is the mini DVI to HDMI converter which I bought from ebay. And I have the HDMI cable to connect it to my TV
Could anyone please suggest me a solution how I could connect my iMac to the LG smart TV? Also I need to know if this transmits the audio as well to the smart TV?
Suggestions are welcomed. I really appreciate and thank you for your time

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

    Hi Maryan,
Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

  • Mini-DVI to HDMI Cable Not Recognized...

    Hello all!
I just bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002LEY28O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&p sc=1 from Amazon.com and it arrived today but when I plugged it into my iMac (Early 2008) literally nothing happens. I have tried power-cycling everything, starting up things one at a time, everything. (Searched the internet to!) Here's the specs of my stuff:
    iMac (Early 2008):
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    ATI Radeon 2400
    2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    1 mini-DVI output port

I am currently staying in a hotel so I do not have all of my usually electronics but I have tested it on an LG HDTV and a ViewSonic HD computer monitor and both do not work, it just display "no signal" and the iMac doesn't know that anything is different, the blue screen that is supposed to fade simply doesn't and under the "display" section there isn't an "arrangement" tab and clicking "detect displays" just freezes my computer (cannot move mouse) for 1-2 seconds. I ruled out the HDMI cable that I have by using it with my Xbox One and it works fine. Any suggestions?
    Thanks Everyone!
Also, you do not have to explain it to me like I'm 5. I am well capable of making my way around a computer.

    Hello Ratnik,

  • Mini dvi to hdmi cable??where

i want to view the itunes visualizer on my 52" hd lcd sony bravia3. i would like to stay in the digital domain, thus use the hdmi connection. I searched everywhere. where can i get a mini dvi to hdmi cable. i saw mini dvi to dvi, is this the same connection minus the wire inside for audio?
imac G5 1.8mhz, and macbook intel core 2duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   wireless keyboard and mouse

what you want to do is get the apple mini div to dvi convertor and a dvi to hdmi cable from a good electical shop.
doing it this way for the video the screen shows the macbook as a box in the screen area, as in there will be a black box around the screen. this does this on my girlfriends lcd tv just a 27inch lg. though the tv only has auto detect for screen res. in my plasma, pioneer 46inch i get full screen but the top menu bar is only half showing, i havenot played with the settings on that yet.
for true digital or surround sound you are better to use an optical cable via the headphone jack. no point if u dont have a digital sound amp though

  • Mini DVI to HDMI cables- Will I get audio on TV

If I hook up a mini DVI to HDMI adapter to an HDMI cable and run it from my MacBook to my plasma TV, can I get video & audio without using the optical digital audio port?

    stedman1 wrote:
Hi ypw: Good question indeed. I checked my Plasma (LG) there doesn't appear to be a separate audio input associated with the HDMI inputs. I seem to recall some posts on here pointing to the separate audio solution, but had never tried to verify.
I might try with my Samsung plasma TV at home.
I thought that the general idea of using the DVI to HDMI converter was just to use it like one would use a typical monitor without audio. Since HDMI already has digital audio and typically comes from sources (tuners, converter boxes, video players) with audio, I don't think there would generally be an option to use analog audio, although it shouldn't be hard to include that option.
I've seen a few things like converters that take component video and analog audio as inputs, with a single HDMI output. I don't know if anyone anticipated blending a different audio source when the source is already HDMI.

  • Mini-DVI to DVI Adaptor HDMI Cable Question.

    Hello All,
I have a mini-DVI port on my white 2008 macbook. I recently bought the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adatpor, hooked up to a DVI/HDMI Cable, which hooks up to my television, a 32 inch Sony HDTV. The TV seems to recognize the connection as the desktop shows up on my television, however there are no icons, it is just my background picture on my computer. Even when I am surfing the internet or playing a video, there is nothing that shows up. I have tried it with 3 different televisions, and used my roommate's computer and hooked it up to different televisions, with no luck.
Does anyone have any idea why I am just getting the background picture on my computer on my television, without any icons or anything else showing up?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • Is it possible to buy a mini-dvi to HDMI cable?

    Hi,
At the minute I'm pulling my hair out!!
Is it possible to buy a cable to connect my 20" Intel iMac via it's mini dvi socket at the back, to a large widescreen lcd tv via HDMI socket on the tv?
I have telephoned numerous companies on the net and they have never heard of a mini dvi socket (like the one on the back of the imac)!! Apple say I need a mini-dvi to dvi female cable but of course they don't sell them.
Guys what do I need, and where would I get it? I've already bought a HDMI-A Male to DVI-D Male cable but it doesn't fit the mac, is there an adaptor I can buy or do I need a new cable also?
    Help really appreciated.

I misunderstood you. I thought you had a link to a mini-DVI to HDMI cable. That's why I asked for the link.
You can use the adapter you linked to and get a DVI to HDMI cable locally and it will work for you.
Sorry about the confusion on my part.

  • MBP to an a/v receiver via dvi to hdmi cable, display not detected?

So as the title says, I'm trying to connect my MBP to a Sony str-dg510 a/v receiver in this order:
    MBP >
Mini Displayport to dvi connector (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4ODk2OTE ) >
    dvi to hdmi cable (http://www.amazon.com/DVI-HDMI-Cable-6ft-Male-Male/dp/B0002CZHN6 ) >
    Sony STR-dg510 AV Receiver >
    Analog TV.
And here's the issue: I'm not getting a second display detected at all. It is an analog connection from the AV receiver to the TV, and I've connected other laptops to the receiver just fine, albeit on a different input.
So I'm not sure where to go from here, the mini displayport to dvi works fine onto an apple display at work.
I also got an unlock message on the receiver at first and thought this may be the issue, so I got an optical audio cable similar to this: (http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-video/audio-cables/digital-audio-optical-tos link-cable/poft3ps/prodPOFT3PS.html )
And now the sound plays fine, but still no picture (and the unlock message is gone.)
    Any idea's?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Community Q62.
If it works fine on another TV but not directly with this TV, the problem is with your TV or your cables. Have you eliminated the cables.

  • Can a mini DVI Display port work with a DVI to HDMI Cable?

I just  bought  a Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter Along with DVI to HDMI Cable for my Mac. I plugged the adapter Into my Imac then I plugged DVI end of the other cable into the adapter when Plugged HDMI connection into my HD TV nothing happened.

I'll second that, you need the > Mini DP to HDMI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.) and a good HDMI cable.
