DVI - RGB/HDMI on XBR4 Sony lcd TV

Hi gang,
I finally decided to plunge into the mac work and got myself a mac mini that I'm trying to connect to my Sony XBR4 TV. I have a standard DVI cable and I purchased a HD15(VGA) Male to DVI-A Female Adapter from monoprice (don't have the one that came with mac mini unfortunatly).
I couldn't get the TV to work. A DVI > HDMI adapter worked fine.
Is there a setting on the mac mini I'm missing? Is the DVI > VGA adapter busted?
I connected a Dell laptop with a standard VGA cable and the TV worked fine.
Any help would be much appreciated.

For completeness, to answer your question, no, there is no setting in the mini that tells it whether to output DVI or VGA - the mini's video port carries both digital and analog. The connector is actually DVI-I standard, which carries both.
However, if you have a DVI-D cable connected to the mini, this will not carry the analog signal (it doesn't have the pin connectors for it) so adding a VGA adapter at the end of that won't work.
Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI for some detail on this. If your DVI cable is DVI-D (no connecting pins around the long slotted ground pin) then replace it with a DVI-I cable, and your adaptor should then work. Alternatively, get hold of an Apple DVI/VGA adapter of the sort supplied with the mini (and other systems) and use a standard VGA cable.

Mac Mini G4 Unsupported Video Format DVI to HDMI 42 Phillips 1080P LCD TV

When connecting my Mac Mini G4 to my 42" Phillips 1080P LCD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable I get a message on the TV "Unsupported Video Format" message. I can connect my PowerBook G4 using the same cable and it connects great.
One thing I have noticed is when connecting my Mini via DVI cable to my 17" LCD monitor the screen is a fated red. But using a VGA cable the screen is fine. I don't know if this is having to do anything with the issue of connecting to my LCD TV.
Any suggestions?

Make sure the connections are good and tighten down the thumb screws on all connectors. If two monitors are giving problems with DVI, it could be there is a hardware problem with the DVI port on the mini.
Also, try starting in Safe mode (boot while holding down the shift key) and see if you get a useable screen in that case. If you still get the unsupported video format message, then that would further suggest some hardware problem with DVI.

Dvi to HDMI to 32 inch LCD

I have a vizio 32 inch lcd. and i want to hook up my macbook. but when i try to do this i cant get the ratio right and everything is off center. how can i make everything centered on the screen?

Mac Mini video out (dvi to HDMI) is always larger than my TV Sony KLV 32S10

Hello, I'm outputting the video DVI to HDMI to my Sony LCD. I get video, so thats good.
what is not good, is the extents of the video are just beyond the phsyical parts that I can actually see. what does that mean... It means the tool bars at the top of the display are never visible. It also means that the bar at the bottom , the icons are only about half visible, the top half.
what can I do to fix that? (seemingly not yet to replace the LCD).
I did not try a DVI to VGA adapter, or other adapters.

I first tried that, but I was left with a very fuzzy / flickery display and thought, no can't be that...
Put the little mini to sleep and awoke to a nice fitting display.

Mac mini, boot camp, windows vista/windows 7, DVI to HDMI, no display

I have a mac mini from 2008 on which I have put windows Vista via boot camp. I have connected the mini using DVI to HDMI, to my Sony Bravia 1080p HDTV.
When I log into the mac 10.6.2, all seems fine and I can see the display alright.
When I log into Windows Vista, I cannot. The display stays black even though I hear the Windows startup sound.
I tried force-upgrading to Windows 7 and the same thing. In fact at some point I can see some of the stuff (like when starting in safe mode), but as soon as it boots up, the display goes blank.
Normally I can see the display up to the point where it says loading Microsoft windows (with the small progress bar) and then, nothing.
Any clues what may be happening?

Outputting DVI to HDMI input in LCD TV versus using the DVI to RGB ?

I am thinking of buying a mac mini to connect to a Toshiba 20HL85 TV in the lounge primarily to act as a "media server" and accessing Front Row for music, photo's, DVD watching etc. The question is which connection to use to go from the mini to the TV for Video (audio is fine as it will route into my AV Receiver)? The TV has an HDMI input, component video, s-video and a VGA port. The user manual for the TV says:
Note: The HDMI jack is not intended for connection to and should not be used with a personal computer. For PC connection, use VGA cable and connect to the VGA port. The VGA port allows the following resolutions:
Monitor Display modes:
VGA 640x480 60Hz
SVGA 800x600 56.3Hz

XGA 1024x768 60Hz
WXGA 1280x720 60Hz
WXGA 1280x768 60Hz
I wanted to know a few things as I have no experience with the MAC mini and HDMI:
1. Will I not get a better/crisper/sharper picture if I connect through a digital port like HDMI versus going through the VGA port?
2. I have checked a few LCD TV's user manuals and they all seem to say the same thing i.e. "Do not connect a PC to the HDMI port" - I fail to understand this when the Apple site specifically says under "accessories for the MAC mini" that "HDMI is electrically similar to DVI, but has a different physical connector that may include an audio signal. You’ll need a DVI to HDMI adapter, such as the Belkin PureAV HDMI to DVI cable to use these televisions".
3. What am I missing? Should I just go ahead and buy the DVI to HDMI cable and MAC mini and plug it in i.e. has anyone done this and had it work? Is it better than VGA (I would hope so)?
Bottom line is does the MAC mini connect to any TV with an HDMI port or are there different types of HDMI ports and hence I need to search for the right TV first? If so, what must I look for? Thanks for any help I can get.

One word of advice. I just hooked up my mini to my 32" Lowe HD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable and it doesn't just work. The native resolution of the TV is not available for whatever reason so I have to bodge another resolution which looks terrible. When I plug my powerbook in via a DVI to VGA connector it just does work selecting the correct resolution automatically.
Either the problem lies with the mini or with connecting to the HDMI socket. As the HDMI is simply a dvi with audio I can't see why it would cause problems but who knows. Given all the other problems I am currently having with the mini I am pointing the finger in that direction currently.

PowerBook G4 to Sony Bravia DVI-to-HDMI

I would like to us a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV as a primary monitor for a PowerBook G4 with a defective display. I have a DVI-to-HDMI cable. I hooked it all up and turned everything on. The Bravia displays this message: "Invalid Format". I've tried changing the resolution and other options in the display preferences, but nothing seems to please the Bravia. The Bravia has a 120 Hz refresh rate, but the PowerBook will not let me adjust the refresh rate above 60Hz. Is there a way to get the PowerBook to send the Sony Bravia correctly formatted input over the DVI-to-HDMI cable?

I am mad 'cause I have been a big fan of apple and now this. I got the last version of the cinema display and now I hear althought there arem so called standards that even with apple products there are lots of issues. I have a TV box (Swiss) and just tried to get my display running.
In vain. No knows to solve the problem. OK.. But I haven't even got an answer what the problem is. It sounds easy. Take a converter from HDMI to DVI (which should be compatible according to Apple/swisscom/connector producers a.s.o) Nothing not even something is coming out.
I bet you don't have a solution...

Cannot Connect Imac 24" via mini dvi to HDMi adapter cable to Sony Bravia 3

Hello Everyone,
I'm having the worst time in trying to connect the following:
1. Imac 24" 3.06 dual with dvi connection
2. Mini dvi to HDMI adapter (this mac with this connection was produced only for a short while!).
3. 10' (foor) HDMI wire
3. Sony Bravia 32" model KDL32L-5000 with 3 HDML connections
i.When I wire everything up, I keep getting"no signal" on my Sony Bravia TV.
ii. It doesn't matter whether I connect the HDMI wire to HDMI 1,2, or 3 on my Sony
iii. On my Imac Hard Drive>>Applications>>System Preferences>>Displays
all I get is a list of different resolutions. There is no mention or mirrors etc.
Nothing happens when I press "Gather Windows" or Detect Displays"
Can someone out there please help!!!!!
Can you also give any solution in very simple and small detailed steps!

Majortrout, there is a major disconnect going on here.
1. You are showing an Ebay link with a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter.
2. You report that you have an Early '09 24" iMac.
3. That iMac does not have a mini-DVI port. That iMac has a mini-DispayPort.
4. You need a mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
It is physically impossible to attach the adapter to which you link at Ebay to your iMac. So you need to take a step back and figure out what you really have; which iMac, which adapter, etc.

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection. Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection. Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image. Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p). Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown. You should see a picture at this point. I recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.

HT2809 No video from MacPro3,1 (2008) to NIKO SV3706 LCD TV via DVI to HDMI cable.

I connected a DVI to HDMI video cable from my MacPro3,1 (2008) to a NIKO SV3706 LCD TV - and got a blank screen. The TV does NOT indicate "no signal" - as it does on unconnected inputs. (BTW: It works via DVI-VGA.) Any suggestions?

MBP won't connect to external Toshiba LCD, MiniDisplay to DVI to HDMI

Brand new Mac Book Pro, 10.6.4, won't connect to external Toshiba 40" LCD display. I'm using a MiniDisplay to DVI-D adapter coming out of the computer. Then a 10' DVI-D (single link) to HDMI cable running to the display. When I connect the external display the MBP "searches" for a few seconds, but doesn't connect, and the Toshiba display reads: No video signal. This is with the MBP open and display on. BUT, sometimes when the MBP lid is closed, and I connect the display IT WORKS for a about 20 seconds, then the computer "goes to sleep" by itself, and the display shuts off. Strange problem... Also I've tested the computer with a 24" external Planar display (MiniDisplay to DVI-D), and it worked fine. Also the TV and DVI to HDMI setup works fine with my older MBP that has a DVI output. Any ideas...?

The adapter works perfect with other computers (mac pro and dual 24" displays). The problem only seems to happen with this new MBP, Toshiba TV, and the adapter configuration I described. I'm trying to find a friend with a similar new MBP, and try it with theirs. With so many components, it's hard to isolate the problem (especially when all the pieces seem to work properly on their own).

No Native Res with DVI/HDMI but OK with DVI/VGA cable on Loewe 32" LCD

Hi there, I am a little confused about connecting my mini to my Loewe Individual LCD TV and coudl do with some help.
I purchased a DVI to HDMI cable at enormous cost because my experience of DVI versus VGA is like night and day and I wanted to have the best possible connection to my HD TV.
The problem is that when I connect the mini with the DVI/HDMI cable the native resolution of my TV is not available. (1366x768 or thereabouts) The only resolutions to choose from are 1920 x 1080? and 1024 X 768. Using overscan on the 1024 fills the screen correctly but looks all stretched.
Instead I connected with a VGA cable and the correct resolution is automatically detected immediately and there is no problem at all.
I am a little bit confused as to why it works fine with VGA but not with DVI/HDMI. The VGA connection looks OK but why compromise when you shoudln't have to?

First of all, I am far from an expert but as I said, from my experience and after reading a LOT, HDMI cannot support 1366x768, that is why the TV goes without picture if you try. Why? I don't know.
Now, DVI is almost like VGA, both are analog, and can support 1366x768 or 1920x1200. But since you go from DVI output from the Mac Mini to the HDMI cable, screen goes black, blue, etc, res no supported.
That is why some people don't have problems with the powerbook and their HDTV's, and then they try with the DVI-HDMI adaptor (normally with the mac mini) and it's no good.
The thing is, you can get 720p, 1280x720 but with overscan, so with DisplayconfigX you go from:
1280x720 (720p)
128 Front Porch 10
80 Sync 5
200 Back Porch 15
1688 Total 750
to
1240x680
128 Front Porch 19
80 Sync 5
240 Back Porch 38
1688 Total 750
for example, with this setup you get the image cut to a minimum.
As you can see the totals are in both cases 1688 750. As soon as you don't respect this totals, like in this example:
1366x768
28 Front Porch 5
80 Sync 5
40 Back Porch 15
1514 Total 793
your TV won't be able to dispay the image. But with VGA the totals don't matter!!!!, that is why it works with one cable and not with the other.
Apple should update the Intel graphic card drivers, maybe that would help.

Leopard "kind of" detects my LCD TV, but doesn't work ( DVI-to-HDMI )

I recently bought a new LG 32" (32LG5000) and was hoping to hook it up to my laptop. When I connect the DVI-to-HDMI cable (DVI on macbook, HDMI on TV port), Leopard's screen turns "blue" for a sec, like if it was detecting/adjusting/whatever the external LCD, but simply returns to normal after that. External LCD continues with "No signal" message on-screen, Leopard doesn't show any new monitors, and I can't figure out the problem.
My TV has 3 HDMI ports, altough one of them is to be used on DVI-HDMI connections, and I've tried to connect to all three of them with no success.
Maybe the cable is faulty ?
My system is:
Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz C2D , 4GB RAM, Geforce 8600M GT

yes, 256 should be sufficient.
Many TVs do not 'autosense' which input is receiving a signal - you have to manually cycle through the available ports.
Verify the TV is set to the correct HDMI port.
(my tv has 2 different HDMI-in ports)
Your resolution is set to 1680x1050.
Check the TV manual to see if it supports that resolution.
It is also possible your DVI->HDMI adapter does not support a particular resolution. It should, but should and do are not always the same.
Does your TV have a standard DVI connector, and have you tried it?
Another thought - is the 8600 HDCP compliant? If not, then it's also possible the lack of HDCP on the card is preventing the image from going through the HDMI port on the TV, rather, the HDMI port on the TV is ignoring the input because it's not getting a valid response when it performs the security check.
I believe using the DVI port bypasses the HDCP compliance check.

Mac mini DVI to HDMI with Sharp Aquos 46' LCD TV

I currently use my 2008 Mac mini on my Sharp LC-46X20 TV using the DVI to VGA adaptor and the TVs VGA input. I currently have the resolution set at 1280 x 768 at 75hz. The picture on the whole is fine, filling the screen perfectly. However, the text is not as sharp as I would like, looking slightly blurry and jagged around the edges, poor in comparison to my iMac.
I have been toying with the idea of getting a DVI to HDMI adaptor and connecting my mac mini to the TV this way.If so will this picture fill the screen AND solve my text problems? I have heard different stories, with some people having a nightmare and some people getting it to work fine.
Was hoping someone would point me in the right direction before I spent any cash on the DVI to HDMI adaptor.

Just to update this:
Got my DVI to HDMI cable today!
Plugged it in, booted her up and was presented with a perfect 1080p HDMI signal without having to alter any display settings.

In my display menu I have 10 resolutions to play with with , 3 of which are full 1080p, one is specifically for PAL tv in the UK.
Couldn't be happier!

DVI to VGA or DVI to HDMI for Sony Bravia

I have a 52" Bravia HDTV that i have hooked up to my Mac Pro (with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card) . I bought a DVI to VGA adapter since teh Bravia doesnt have a DVI port, but has a "PC" port. All my friends tell me to use "DVI to HDMI" better. What are the advantages? i am asking because the screen looks great with the VGA connection .I just watched several HD trailers for different movies on the Bravia and they look REALLY HD and clean. So is it really going to look even better ? or is there another advantage to using HDMI ? Thanks
a side question, when i restarted my Mac Pro that had the Bravia and the mac display hooked up , the display was blinking on startup (where it keeps flashing a light blue screen) until i restarted it again . What happened ?

The HDMI port can give sharper vertical edges, but some TVs don't work well with computers via HDMI. The only way to tell is to try it.
