DVI Switch questions

Hi,
I have two Mac Pro's and I want to share one of my displays with both.
Because my display has both VGA and DVI input I tried using the VGA input firsth, but it turned out that my Mac didn't support it's root resolution 1440x900 in this configuration.
So I decided to go for an DVI Switch, but I have a few questtions about it.
-I have read that you should never connect or disconnect an monitor when eigther the monitor or Mac is still running. (It could damage both!)
But how about "hot" switching? I'll be constantly switching between the two Mac's while they are both running.
-Could thid damage my Mac's???
-An other thing is that switching using a DVI switch seems to take a lot more time than using an VGA switch.
(The Mac's seem to know that an monitor is added or gone, and addapts to the new situation.)
Can I speed this up?
Greetings,
Michiel

I asume that my "König comuter 2 port DVI KVM Switch" wouldn't qualify for decent.
So if I want to be able to swich quickly between my two machines, I have to use VGA! (although quality will be bad because of the resolution)
Why doesn't OSX support 1440 x 900 on VGA?
Or is there a work-a-round?

  • Have 23" Cinema Display, want 30" but don't know if my DVI switch will work

    I have a 23" Cinema Display currently being shared by my 2 Macs (G5 and MacBook Pro) and 2 Windows PCs using a 4 port Single Link DVI KVM.
    I want to upgrade to a 30" display, but I am getting some conflicting advise from Apple Store personnel, Apple Online Store, etc.
    I want to put an adapter between my current single link DVI switch and a new 30" cinema display. I keep hearing to use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, but looking at pictures of it, I don't see how that would work. I would need two DVI connections on the adapter (one in and one out), but I don't see that on there.
    The gist is, I have 4 computers (which may or may not have dual link DVI) and I want to still use them to drive a 30" Cinema Display. Am I just hosed and have to wait, or buy a 30" monitor from another vendor?
    I would be fine with the current 1920 by 1200 resolution on the 30" as I am purchasing this to help my tired eyes.
    Thanks for any advise.

    I have read of other 30" monitors (Samsung) supporting lower resolutions using a single link DVI. Is it just the Cinema Display that doesn't support single link at any resolution.
    The Apple 30" will work at 1,280 x 800 via single-link DVI.
    What's the point though

  • Two Port DVI Switch ?

    I would like to hook up my 20' ACD with my Mini and my Compaq Desktop with a DVI graphics card.
    Is their a DVI switch of some sort avaliable in the market ? I know about the regular KVM switches (VGA/PS2) but need some guidance in the DVI arena...
    Thanks

  • Mini DVI switch

    Hi,
    I have two mini DVI adapters for my iMac. One to VGA to connect it to my second screen for working and one to Video to connect it to my TV as a media center.
    Is there something like a mini DVI switch with that I can connect both adapter to switch between second screen and TV and don't have to unplug the adapters everytime?

    I don't know of any such product. If the TV is also connected over VGA, you can probably connect a VGA switch to the end of one of one of those mini-DVI adapters and then connect your TV and second display to the switch. If the TV is an HDTV and connects with HDMI, or an older one that uses composite, then that would not work.
    Alternately, you can dedicate the mini-DVI port to the TV connection. And get one of these adapters that lets you connect a display using USB

  • DVI Switch box

    Dose any one know of a "dvi switch box" or a "kvm switch" that supports 2560x1600 max res. I would like to have my 30" cinema display connected to both of my computers at the same time its getting tiresome disconnecting the dvi when ever i want to switch machines. My only problem is i cannot find a switch that goes up to 2560x1600 max res. please help me i have failed horribly at the google machine and would appreciate any assistance in tracking something down. Thank you!!!

    I'm using this on my 23" ACD without any probs

  • DVI Switch Apple 20" Cinema PC and Mac

    Hi i have recently purchased a DVI switch so that i am able to swap the output to my 20" Apple Cinema Monitor between my Windows PC and my PowerMac G4. the switch its self works perfect i am using apples ADC to DVI convertor which is plugged into the the switches output and the DVI outputs from the PC and Mac are going into the switches inputs, The problem i have is that when i switch to the PC and then back to the Mac my Mac seems to sleep the DVI output on the graphics card and i am unable to wake it up, so i have been resorting to a reboot before the monitor displays an output for the Mac, I have noticed that whilst the Mac is booting i can switch back and forth and it functions as intended which leads me to believe that this sleeping the output is a function of the OS, does anyone know how i can solve this problem. many Thanks

    You may need a DVI Detective between the Mac and the DVI switch.

  • DVI Switch

    I'd like to use my Cinema display with my Macbook Pro as well as my Deskpro. Any suggestions on a good quality DVI switch. Not really interested in the KVM features.

    THE PROBLEM
    I had one CRT VGA monitor, one LCD VGA monitor and One 'Apple DVI to TV adaptor' but only two DVI-I outputs available on my Quad G5. I wanted to switch easily from my VGA LCD monitor to TV Adaptor using the second DVI-I output as the urge took me. The other DVI output was for my main monitor which I didn't want to mess with.
    But there are no DVI-I switches that don't cost less then £50/€70/$96. Most switch just the digital part of the DVI-I output anyway. These are DVI-D switches. No good to me. It baffles me why there aren't any DVI-A monitor switches. The only difference from VGA monitor switches is that DVI-A sockets would be required.
    I invested in a cheap 'Female DVI-I (the Apple TV Adaptor is DVI) to Male VGA adaptor' but there was something wrong with it as the Apple TV Adaptor refused to work.
    After much searching on the internet I couldn't find out what the pins on the Apple TV Adaptor where. So like any good geek I found out for myself.
    Here is what I found and ultimately how to make a 'VGA to Apple TV Adaptor'. I now use a cheap VGA monitor switch I got second hand to switch easily from VGA monitor to Apple TV Adaptor. Work and play are only a quick switch away. Total cost €9/$12/£6.
    All the information you need is here:-

    I hope this helps a few people. I know I could've done with it.

  • IMac 27 - DVI-In question

    Sorry if there is another post with a clear answer on this one that I missed.
    I am close becoming a convert from MS to Mac for my home desktop. The question I have on the new iMacs is regarding the DVI in capability. Today I have two MS machined (one laptop and one desktop) that share a monitor using a Belkin switch to go back and forth.
    Will it be possible to attach my Dell laptop via either the VGA or the DisplayPort (which can be adapted for DVI) to the iMac so that I can dynamically switch between the two CPUs (at the same time).
    Thanks, B

    Well, a Mac is an Intel PC, so one possible solution is to run Windows on the Mac. WMware Fusion has a feature on import an existing Windows installation from a PC into a virtual machine. A virtual machine runs Windows (or Linux or any compatible OS) under Mac OS X.
    But if you continue using that Windows laptop, there may be a licensing issue, since you would then have two active computers using the same license; Microsoft is pretty strict about making sure each license is only on one active computer and making you re-activate if there is a significant change in hardware. So ideally, you'd have access to a separate Windows license, if you wanted to do something like that with a Mac.

  • Onkyo SR705 HDMI-DVI switching problem..

    I just bought myself an Onkyo SR705 with built in HDMI switching. At first, I thought my monitor having problems with the switch or my mac pro not detecting it. Then i turned on my PS3 and it works. Mac detects the receiver. But no picture comes out if it. Previously, i had a TERK 2-in-1 switch and that works well.
    Gateway FPD2275W DVI-HDMI > Onkyo > mac pro HDMI-HDMI with HDMI to DVI adaptor.
    what do i need to do with the mac or the setup in general to fix this problem?
    my monitor supports 1080i, and supports HDCP.

    ill answer my own question.
    found out the switch does not support full HD resolutions. Supported Max at 1280x1024 and also 1024x768.. probably my video card doesn't support it either? eh.. for anybody who is wondering why it dont work.

  • Switch Question

    I'm new to Java, but not to programming or IDE's. I'm in the early stages of developing a new Java application, so I've been playing with various example code from some of the number of books available on the topic. In particular I was interested in using the StreamTokenizer class to initially set up my database, so I looked for some examples of how to use it. One of the examples I located is the following:
    import java.io.*;
    class StreamTokenizerDemo2 {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    try {
    // Create a file reader
    FileReader fr = new FileReader(args[0]);
    // Create a buffered reader
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(fr);
    // Create a stream tokenizer
    StreamTokenizer st = new StreamTokenizer(br);
    // Consider commas as white space
    st.whitespaceChars(',', ',');
    // Process tokens
    while(st.nextToken() != StreamTokenizer.TT_EOF) {
    switch(st.ttype) {
    case st.TT_WORD:
    System.out.println(st.lineno() + ") " +
    st.sval);
    break;
    case st.TT_NUMBER:
    System.out.println(st.lineno() + ") " +
    st.nval);
    break;
    default:
    System.out.println(st.lineno() + ") " +
    (char)st.ttype);
    // Close file reader
    fr.close();
    catch(Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Exception: " + e);
    It looks good on the surface, but the compiler is unhappy that the case st.TT_WORD: is not a constant - the exact complaint is:
    StreamTokenizerDemo2.java [24:1] constant expression required
    case st.TT_WORD:
    Of course, the other case statement also generates an error.
    As I would expect, changing the switch/case to cascaded if's works just fine. The examples elsewhere in the book I took this one from have been excellent so far; this is the first time I've seen a compiler error on their example code.
    Has there been a change to the syntax or error checking with regard to the case statement since the book was printed in 1999? Can a case statement be used in this kind of application or should I just decide to stay with cascaded if's?
    Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.
    Jon

    Thanks for the quick reply. I followed the same approach (using the class rather than the instance) about an hour after I posted my question and was able to make the example code work then.
    I'm still a bit curious about the restriction though. The examples were from a 1999 Schildt and O'Neil book, Teaching Yourself Java. Every other example I have played with has worked right out of the book without any changes, but the StreamTokenizer example failed. I wonder if the 1999 compiler wasn't as restrictive?
    Anyway, I appreciate the response.
    Thanks
    Jon

  • VGA/XVGA/DVI - tech questions

    This is not a question about displays as such, but their interconnection. I hope this is a suitable forum.
    I want some technical info on the VGA, XVGA, DVI, RGB and the twenty or so other connectors available for displays (including TVs)
    Particularly I want to know details about the VGA connector on my iBook. Is VGA a digital output? What is it's resolution? If it's not a digital interface and is simply an RGB signal, why so many (15) pins?
    A friend wants me to hook my G4 to his LCD TV and compare the DVD playback from the iBook and his DVD player. His TV manual talks about using an RGB/DVI conversion cable when driving the TV from a Mac. It shows a 15 pin RGB cable (like the connector that comes with the G4), yet the DVI end of the conversion cable has 24 pins.
    All very complicated. Can anyone direct me to a site that would have technical specs for VGA & DVI plugs: ie what pin is what.

    "what pin is what."
    I just Googled for these two links of the pinouts. I'm sure there is a lot more if you want to search.

  • Hard Drive Switching Question

    I'm using an iMac G4 800 MHz 15" Flat Panel. I am looking to replace my 60GB HD with a 250 GB one. I have a few questions:
    1.) Can I put my 60 GB HD into a G4 Tower as a shell and transfer all the information from one HD to the Other with either an ethernet crossover cable/USB/Firewire whichever works best?
    2.) Can I then take that 60 GB HD and install it into an old iMac G3 333MHz after erasing the HD while it was in the G4 Tower?
    If these steps would not work are there any that people could suggest to take?
    Thanks,
    Ted

    as you can see he said imac flat panel. You can switch the drive it is a big job but not that hard if you take your time and follow the instruction's. go to xlr8yourmac.com and you will find the info there!!! I did change my 80GB to a 160GB. I still have my 80GB in a firewire case with the system folder still there if I need to start up for repairs. and for back up of files make sure the new drive is set to cable select. and if you use the firewire case make sure the drive is set to master. If you put it in a 333mhz imac make sure you make your 1st partion 8GB then the rest will be like a second drive. The start up system on those had to be in the 8gb or the system won't start up. And to answer the question you can use the external cases which are usb1 but not fast for files. YOU CAN'T START UP FROM A EXTERNAL CASE ON THOSE SYSTEMS even if you put in a sonnet upgrade with the firewire plug in them!
    I had one and know that for a fact. And if I remember right the drive in that system must be set as Master. Good Luck

  • 802.1x Dynamic VLAN Switching Question

    Trying to set up 802.1x dynamic VLAN switching, and have a question. I think I've gotten it working except for one part. The VLAN on a protected interface is never getting switched. I can see an entry in the ACS stating that it applied the appropriate VLAN via RADIUS response, but it never changes on the switch.
    Environment:
    ACS Express 5.0.1

    Am I missing something easy?

    It looks like "aaa authorization network default group dot1x" was the missing command I needed to get this working.
    The only issue I'm having now is that if the client fails to meet the authentication requirements, the line status gets set as "down"

  • WiSM Switch - Questions about Client Connections

    Hello!
    i?m planning a worst case scenario for a customer site. They got a couple of 6500?s with WiSM Modules installed. Now I?m sitting over a instruction of what to do when a WiSM breaks down and I got a few questions regarding the clients.
    In the case a Controller stops responding, the AP?s are automatically switched to the secondary Controllers. What happens when the Primary Controller returns - they automatically switch back, right? Is this automatic switch combined with a loss of wireless connectivity? (LWAPP tunnel gets torn down, and a new LWAPP connection must be established - that is basically the same if I restarted the AP, isn?t it? ) If so, how long does it take for the connectivity to return? Is it possible to manually do the switch to a later time (late in the evening..) to minimize the effects for the clients? The Goal is to keep the clients up and running, without termination of the wireless connection - if this is possible.

    Also, after checking my WLC's Controller->General config screen, you will find a parameter called "AP Fallback".
    It can be either "Enabled" or "disabled" and determines whether or not an access point that lost a primary controller connection automatically returns to service when the primary controller becomes functional again.
    I suppose that if you set this parameter to "Disabled" in the secondary controller, before activating the repaired/replaced primary controller that this would also accomplish what you want.
    It is not clear if the same setting would also need to be applied to the primary controller. You may need to test this aspect first to be sure.
    Presumably, you could then re-enable "AP fallback" when you are ready to force the LWAPs back to the primary.
    I hope this helps,
    - John

  • Simple boolean switch question

    I'm quite new at using structures (while loops, etc) in LabVIEW, so here's a very oversimplified question (hypothetical, but I think will help me understand what I'm doing). I have 2 on/off boolean switches, each one controls 2 identical LEDs which display if switch is on or off. One set of 2 LEDs (one from one switch, one from the other) should update every 1s, the other set of 2 updated every 5s. How do I accomplish this most efficiently?
    I attached a picture of my first try, this lets me time the udpates individually but of course it's wrong since I then learned each while loop only takes the input when you first click run, and doesn't keep checking the input after that point. Thanks!

    You only need a single loop and you don't need any local variables.
    Place all controls inside the loop and spin the loop every 1000ms.
    Update one set of controls at every iteration and the other set of controls every 5 iterations using a case structure.
