DVI to Component Video - Compatibility Question

Hello, everyone. I am in a pickle with my soon to be new Mac Mini, concerning the issue of hooking it up to a TV for use as a monitor.
My problem is thus: The TV is a 26" LCD with only a maximum of a Component Video input (no VGA or HDMI), and the Mini has only DVI out. I have seen a cable and/or adapter on the internet that converts DVI to Component, but there is a warning that says the DVI port must support it, or the graphics card must support it. I am wondering if anyone knew if this would work with the Mac Mini. My only other alternative is to use the DVI to Video adapter with S-Video, which on the 1368x768 TV would be inferior. I would prefer component, but am unsure if it would even work because Apple's Tech Specs on the Mini lists only DVI to VGA conversion or the S-Video/Composite adapter, and does not specifically say if it supports Component.
Any support would be GREATLY appreciated, as I have been up for three hours into the wee hours researching all the aspects of my problem, and am unable to figure it out. THANK YOU!

The impression I get is that you might need a more expensive adapter to convert DVI to component.
BTW can you give us the model number of your LCD TV? Thanks!
AppleTV is probably better suited for a component-only TV, though the Mini can certainly do a good job when the TV does have digital or VGA inputs.

New imac to tv help: mDVI to DVI cable, DVI to component video adapter?

I am getting my new imac tomorrow, very excited. I would love to be able to hook it up to my HD tv which has component video inputs.
It has two by the way, one says component video, one says component video HD. (that's the one my xbox is hooked up to.)
I think I'm getting like 1020p or something like that?
am aware of the lack of sound, but will have the imac hooked up to speakers so no worries on that.
will this chain work? mDVI-DVI cable, DVI to component video adapter? then what? component video cable to tv?
so I will need to buy two adapters and one cable right? Also, the cable is gonna need to be about 30ft long so will I be able to daisy chain cables?
PS, what kind of resolution will I be getting with the standard (none component HD) inputs?

ATI dvi to component video adapter?

I have an older HDTV that only has component video inputs (for HD signals anyway). The macbook pro has an ATI graphics processor, so I took a chance and ordered the ATI dvi to component video adapter:

I know it doesn't work with the old ati single-link dvi macs, has anyone tried it with the new x1600 based macs?

I have the same problem. I have found out that RGB output from computers is actually RGBHV, which includes vertical and horizontal sync signals. Therefore conversion from Macbook Pro DVI or RGB to plasma component (YPrPb) requires more than just a simple converter like ATI DVI to Component video adaptor, unless Apple can output component video from the video card (that's theoretically possible, but it depends on how Apple integrated the chipset into the motherboard, according to ATI).
The alternative is to use a processor to convert the signal. Key Digital produce a signal transcoder, KT-VTCA3. http://www.keydigital.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=500&itemno=KDVTCA3&pro ductname=Video%20and%20Control%20Adapters. I have ordered one of these and believe it will work, in lieu of Apple providing a means for outputting component video directly from the Macbook Pro.

DVI to Component video w/ MacBook Pro and NVIDIA GeForce 8600M card...

I just got a new MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M video card. On the NVIDIA website for the card, it states:
"Integrated HDTV encoder provides analog TV-output (Component/Composite/S-Video) up to 1080i/1080p resolution".
I have a Sony HDTV that only has component video (Y Pr Pb) inputs (the red/green/blue inputs). It is capable of HD up to 1080i.
If the NVIDIA card does output an analog TV (Component) signal, it should work. However, when I went to the place that sells the DVI-to-Component adapter, I got some bad news:

I wrote a question to the Sewell folks about this product and asked this:

They answered:
Unfortunately this will not work. While the GPU may support the function, the Mac Version of the cards do not implement the component signal.
I think they are still thinking about the older MacBooks that use the ATI chipset and don't know about the new NVIDIA cards.
Is component really not implemented in the new MacBook Pros?
I have the 17" model that has more VRAM than the 15" and I got the HD screen upgrade.
Does anyone know any solution that will work with the MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA chipset? As I said, I'm trying to output an HD signal from the DVI port on the MacBook Pro to component video input on my HD television.

DVI to component video - possible?

I'm trying to find a way to connect the DVI output of my MacBookPro 1.1 to the component video inputs of a Sony STR-DH810 receiver which is hooked up to my TV. I discovered I can't use the HDMI inputs on that receiver with an alternate audio source, which is why I'm trying component video. When I connect everything, I get no video - only audio. I know the component video inputs are good because they work with my DVD player component video outputs.
The owner's manual of the receiver says "display system must support component video (Y, Pr, Pb) signal output function in order for the image to display properly". Does my MacBookPro work this way?
I guess my other option might be to find a DVI to composite video cable, if such a thing exists?

I don't know that I've heard of successful DVI to component, but in theory it may work, as the GPU outputs both digital and analog signals.
OTOH, I've seen a number of reports that this works (S-Video or composite):

DVI to Component Video Output YpBr- Mac Pro NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Card

Hello-
I am trying to use my Mac Pro as a media machine, but to do this I need to convert the DVI signal to Component video. The video switch I am using is Component only, so that is the reason why I cannot go HDMI.
What is the best solution? Do they make an adapter that will convert? Is there a graphics card issue?
On a sidenote, will the computer be able to operate with two video cards? I was thinking of having one HDMI output to my main television monitor, and having component video going to my switch for the other monitors located around the house.

What about upgrading to this video card?

It will give more graphics performance, but you don't need it for just displaying video. If you do want extra performance, get the ATI Radeon HD 4870

New Mini - DVI to component video?

I'm thinking of purchasing a new Intel Mini but want to connect it to my TV. My current Intel/Beyond TV box uses S-Video and is less than optimal.
My TV is:
Sony VEGA KV-32XBR450
HD/DVD In ports - 1080i/480p/480i - Y,Pb,Pr component video jacks

Here is a product that I found online. I have no idea if it will work for you and have nothing to do with the company. I have the same need as you and wish to have HDTV video out. My Sony Wega KV-40XBR800 needs to have the scan rate and resolution set correctly or it will damage the CRT via DVI or Component. This converter doesn't do 1080i but it does give you 1152x864 and sets the scan rates accordingly (I assume). It's kind of a hack as far as I'm concerned and I'll wait until someone (Hopefully Apple) supplies us with a proper HDTV Component solution.
Of course we could just buy new HDTVs that have DVI-I and HDMI like the Sharp Aquos LC-45GD7U. Being that it's an LCD I believe the Aquos should work with DVI, HDMI, or Component (Via the online Manual) as stated on apples MacMini Duo Accessories page (http://www.apple.com/macmini/accessories.html) but I'm not for sure because I don't have one to test. Of course buying another HDTV is redundant and expensive to say the least.

DVI to Component Video

I just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro with 2.6ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and I would like to connect it to my JVC HD-52G886 via component cables. If I were to purchase a DVI to Component Cable would this work? I had read that a digital dvi output would not correctly convert to the analog HD component inputs. Thanks.

Connection issues with MacBook Pro and DVI to component video

How do I connect a 2007 macbook pro to a regular tv (non-hd) via the DVI port with component cables? The image is always scrambled. The connections are fine, what do I need to do?

I would like to point out that 1080p has a lower pixel clock than will 1920 x 1200. So it could be the stability problem is only present when the pixel clock is at the high end of the range.
You could return the adapter and try another. A new one might have better margins. Another thing you could try is to use a utility like SwitchResX to lower the pixel clock and see if stability improves.

Mini dvi to component

I wanted to connect my iMac (Intel, mid 2007) to an external LCD TV which is around 30 ft away. I purchased a min-DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA to component video adapter. I wanted to watch HD movies on my TV via my iMAC
The component video cable from the iMac goes into a wall socket connection which goes to the other room where my TV is located. I then connect another component video cable from the wall socket outlet to my TV. I have also made similar audio connections. While I can get the audio playing... my TV says 'no input signal'.
A composite video connection works but the picture quality is poor, hence I was looking for a solution to get high resolution movies playing on my TV through my iMac.
Considering the above problem, would a mini DVI to DVI and then DVI to component video adapter work?
Any suggestions or solutions will be greatly appreciated.

I believe you may have misread my message above. Previously, I was using a mini-DVI to S-video/composite video adaper and I was getting the output to my TV... but the picture quality was poor. So I decided to go with component video and hence the mini DVI-VGA-Component adapters.
I also noticed that when I connect my original mini-DVI to s-video/composite adapter, my iMac (system profiler) shows that a display connector is connected. But when I connect the mini-DVI to VGA connector, it says no display connector is connected.
Is there any was to check if this mini-DVI to VGA adapter is functioning properly ?

External preview display via. Mini-DVI to video adapter QUESTION

Hello, I have been browsing this forum for a while, and this is my first question.
I have a Macbook Core2duo running Final Cut Pro. I purchased a Mini-DVI to S-video/composite video adapter.
I cannot get my work to preview on this external monitor. I would like to view the canvas on the monitor while working. I had this setup at school on a G5, but I cannot get it to work on my macbook. The only way apple suggests doing this is by setting up a camera via. firewire and then run from the camera to the NTSC video display (television). I would just like to do it via. mini-dvi to my television for previewing.

From what I've been told, using the computer's video output isn't outputting a true NTSC picture. I was told when talking about how the Macbook Pros dropped the S-vdieo port that I shouldn't use that anyways, but rather to go the firewire route. THat was actually converts the video source to true NTSC instead of taking a computer output to a TV. While I have no doubt that it works, I'm willing to bet that you'll see a noticeable difference between the G5 S-video and your MB using firewire. Most consumer camcorders from the past several years do digital (firewire) to analogue (NTSC) conversion, so you probably don't even need a new box.

Viewing Canvas Video Feed on a Seperate Monitor through DVI or Component

Hey All,
This is something I have been researching with no simple, possibly cost efficent solution. Basically I would like to view the timeline canvas feed on a seperate monitor without the use of my hvx200. I will be editing in 720p60 and have an 17" hd tv with component and dvi inputs on the way.
I mainly will be using this monitor on productions as a field monitor but I would like to eventually use it as a second monitor on my mac pro to view only the video timeline feed of final cut pro on it, not mirror desktop and have a somewhat fuzzy (sd on a second monitor through mirroring always seems degraded).
I have looked at possible devices like the matrox and blackmagics pci cards to either sdi (which I dont have) hdmi and such but those start at $1000, a great deal of money I do not have at the time.
I would think that since the monitor has both a vga 15pin and digital dvi input there either has to be an option in fcp I have not seen or a device that I have not found.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Look at the back of your mac and see if you have two monitor ports on your video card. Depending on the type of card you should be able to connect to your HD monitor as a second screen and then setup FCP to put external video on the digital cinema desktop.
I am using a siimilar setup, using a Dell Ultra-Sharp flatscreen as both my second computer monitor and my external video. The Dell's have DVI, VGA, component, S-video, and composite inputs, but right now I'm just using the DVI and FCP switches the video back and forth when I turn on external video.

VGA, component video or DVI

I have a new Mac Mini (Intel) I am using it as a media center to play DVDs, iTunes videos and MPEG-4 (H.264 converted from DVD).
I tried connecting to DVI but to no avail. Will I lose a lot of quality if I display video VGA or component (via VGA to component adapter)?
Keep in mind I am only using to play videos.

When I plug into the DVI port it just says "No Signal". Used tools like to SwitchresX and DisplayConfigX but to change the resolution, but same result.
Are you sure you have a good cable? Does the same one work with your PowerBook? Are you certain you've pushed the cable in far enough to the back of the Mac mini? My connection (with a DVI to HDMI cable) is very snug.
You say that DVD is ony 720x480, does that mean that it will show the same regardless of the connection (VGA, S-Videop, Component or DVI)?
Having a different connection won't change the original image coming from your DVD. However, the quality of the connection from the computer to the TV will be very different from each of those different connections. S-video, component and composite connections are analog and the digital signal from your Mac mini will have to be converted from digital to analog. So, you might lose some quality there. S-video is better than composite because it includes brightness and color.
DVI will give you a superior connection to all the other options. I would probably try to troubleshoot that problem before attempting other work-arounds like a component video connection.
