DVI to CRT???

I just got a Mac mini for Christmas and want to hook it up to my television as a media center. My TV is a 27 inch Toshiba CRT. I'm using the DVI to Video adaptor with an s-video cable from the Mac to the TV. Out of the box, I booted up, got a picture and worked my way through the system set up. Got to the desktop, opened up System Preferences>Displays and tried a different resolution. BAM! The screen starts jumping all over the place. At this point, I only have a wireless keyboard and I can't read the screen at all. I take the mini in to my local Apple store and the Genius there tells me to reset my PRAM. He demonstrates for me in the store and tells me I'll need to find a wired keyboard to make this work at home. I also notice that his LCD monitor is showing at least a dozen more resolution options than what I had for my CRT, so I know that the computer is talking to the monitor. Anyway, I track down a corded USB keyboard and reset the PRAM again at home. Still no dice. Getting very frustrated and feeling very stupid. HELP!

You can probably get a "sane" picture by starting in "Safe Mode". Using the the wired usb keyboard, hold down the Shift key for about 30 seconds, immediately after hearing the starting up chime or beep.
Starting in safe mode will take a bit longer than normal, and some services such as WiFi won't be available. But it should put a basic resolution up on the screen that will work with the TV, while you experiment with tweaking System Prefs > Displays.
BTW, I'm curious ... was there anything wrong with the picture that you initially had, before you went to display preferences?

  • How to dell laptop to a 23" mac monitor

How do I connect my dell inspirion to my 23" mac monitor. I have an adaptor (DVI to CRT I think) but my laptop doesn't have a place for the firewire cable. Any ideas how to make this work?

you are not going to connect the FireWire cable - you are only going to connect the monitor
if you wanted to use the firewire cable, you would need to add a FireWire host adapter to your machine

  • DVI to Video adapter CRT Broadcast Monitor? Is there a better option?

I am a freelance motion graphics artist, and I use Final Cut Studio, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.
I need a CRT monitoring solution for checking my color grades, etc.
SD resolution is fine, and i've got my eye on a JVC TMH-150CGU broadcast monitor from B&H. It has an S-Video (Y/C) input.
I'm thinking of using the Apple DVI Video Adapter hook up to it via S-Video.
I have a Pantone Eye-One that I can use to calibrate the monitor.
Would this setup work ok in the above applications? Will it support Digital Cinema Desktop Preview in Final Cut?
I have the 30" Apple display. Will connecting the CRT via DVI steal 256mb of my video memory???? That seems drastic considering it's already driving a 30" display AND running after effects!!
I've thought about FireWire monitoring, but I suspect the FireWire/DV 4:1:1 compression will affect the colors.
I know a CAPTURE CARD would be ideal, with SDI, etc... but I don't really have a need for a full blown capture card at the moment. I don't think use it to it's full potential (ie- to capture). It seems silly spending $$$$ just for a monitoring solution.
Or is a capture card my only option for pro monitoring? If I was to buy one, i'd want a future proof one should I digitize in the future (ie, HD, with analog support), so that leaves either a Blackmagic Intensity Pro (which I believe is only 8 bit) or a BlackMagic Decklink HD Extreme. And then i'd also need the SDI or Component expansion card for the JVC monitor, and before I know it, i've spent over $1000, just for a decent monitoring solution. Ouch.
I strongly considered the Intensity Pro card, because I could monitor SD component, and HDMI HD from the same card. But it put me off when I heard it ws only 8 bit. But it is 4:2:2 though.
What might KILL the Apple DVI adapter option is I have a TON of PAL footage, and I heard the adapter is NTSC only (or a seperate PAL version). So even though the monitor supports both standards, the adapter doesn't. Or so I've heard.
Very confused. Any other options or advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
From the sound of things you have answered your own question.
If you wanted a CRT to just check video playback, safe areas and text legibility then a cheap option of monitoring via a deck or camera would suffice.
You mention a lot of PAL footage just as a FYI this would be 4:2:0 as opposed to 4:1:1 with NTSC under the DV codec.
You don't mention (and I'm sorry if I missed it) what codec you output to. I had always found when working with DV only that a DV monitoring solution was sufficient for most applications.
However as you indicate that colour plays a factor in the equation bite the bullet and get a decent monitoring system from the off. I am using the Decklink Extreme and have found it to be excellent especially in real time conversion and monitoring of HD to SD.
In addition you get the ability to work all the way up to 10bit (drives allowing) and capture over SDI with full deck control.
You could stagger the cost since the BM card will let you monitor composite out in addition to component so the expansion board for the CRT might not be a must have from the get go for you.
Whatever route you go you will want to calibrate the CRT using broadcast colour bars rather than a Pantone system, theres plenty of info on the web regarding this . . and why.

  • CRT Monitor to a DVI

  • Anyone connected an Apple ADC CRT to Powerbook DVI, how??

I have my older 17" Apple Studio Display ADC CRT which I would like to use at home for extra screen space with my Titanium Powerbook which has a DVI port.
I bought the DVI to ADC adapter but have found out it ONLY works on the ADC LCDs and NOT CRTs. Crazy. So what connects these two together. I have seen many others in the Apple Display Forums with the same frustration but no solutions.
What gives? Apple abandoned connecting two of their own products which did overlap in time when sold.
Anyone else trying to do the same or are successfuly using these together?

I know your post is a bit old, but I'll contribute what I know anyway - You cannot use a DVI-ADC adapter with the ADC CRT because it is an analog display, and DVI by definition requires a digital signal. Therefore, neither the Apple adapter nor any other adapter can convert the signal from the CRT. It's outside of Apple's control. All of the LCD displays that are ADC use a digital signal, so they work just fine.
Apple only ever manufactured the one 17-inch ADC CRT, and only for about six months, so they're not affecting too many people... Unfortunately, you're one of them - and I have a beautiful, retired 17-inch CRT that I can't use with my PowerBook (Aluminum).
    I got a 20-inch Cinema, and I love it.

  • Hello! can I use a DVI to video adapter cable from my macbook to a 60 inch CRT TV?!

Just got the TV tonight and connected my DVI cable. now I know the cable works because I used it on a MUCH smaller TV but this one is obviously enormous. I got the image to appear, it was just real blurry and crazy. is there a display setting that I could change somewhere to make it work do you think?

Yes. But you would also need a DC adapter to power the Axiom, as the USB bus doubled as a power supply.

  • Mini-DVI to Video adapter + Widescreen CRT Television problem...

The problem is that in the resolution list in Display-tab for the second display, which is PAL TV, have no resolutions for WIDESCREEN TV. Only resolutions are 640x480, 720x480, 720x576, 800x600 and 1024x768.
Is this a OS related or is there different adapters to iMac 24 and iMac 20? The adapter which I now have is lent from my friend and he have iMac 20.
How this even can be an issue to MAC, because this could be done easily on PC. I just got my first Mac and I love it but this kind of problems I even couldn't imagine.

My 27" flat screen TV added some 1220x720 selections to choose from. Go to the "NTSC/PAL" display perference panel and click the "Detect Displays."
From experence I have never been able to really use the TV as a true second display. Although it really does work quite well for showing DVD movie's, Home movie's, iPhoto slideshows, MS Word PowerPoint or anything FrontRow.
For quicker access to the Display Preferences check the "Show displays in menu bar" This places a display icon on the menu bar for one click access to resolution list and preferences for both displays.

  • Display issues - CRT - Flicker, b&w

I have a 1.5 GHz Core Solo Mac mini. I'm using a DVI to Video adapter to display on my CRT television.
After making some changes to resolution, I have had issues with the display. After the grey apply start up, the display flickers (to the point where it cannot be used) and is in black & white. I am unable to see anything properly, so I can't detect displays.
I suspect the issue is with the refresh rate or interlacing.
I am able to use the mini on an LCD monitor. I tried to make changes to settings, but it doesn't seem to stick. I am able to use the TV in safe mode, but after a restart the problem persists.
    Any suggetions?
    Thanks.

After the mini is started in Safe mode with the TV, go into System preferences and make a change to another resolution that works but is different from the one that Safe uses. Then, when restarting normally, that resolution should persist and things should be working again.

  • Mini-DVI to VGA frustrations

I have a mini dvi to vga adapter connecting a CRT to my macbook, everything was working great untill... it turned pink, everything on the display has a really bad pink tint, ive tryed it with different displays... no luck...
So I call apple care to see if i can get it replaced, the lady i talked to could barely speek english, but thats not important right now. She tells me that my macbook is out of the phone support unless i buy apple care, then she transfers me to sales once she finds out that its a bad display adapter. At sales i explain what was wrong, and the guy there sends me back to apple care, i hung up.
I want to know how the heck i can get this fixed, i bought the display adapter like 2 months ago, they should be able to replace it. Where do i go from here?

Others have had problems with the adapter:
"If you order one of these treat it very gently, be careful how you pack it when traveling, etc. My first one broke in 4 months (the wires internal to the rubber cable enclosure shorted - so the screen would drop out certain colors)."

  • Mini-DVI to VGA or Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter?

    Hi There,
I am so close to purchasing a new Mac Mini that I can almost taste it. When I finally get the Mini, I want to hit the ground running, so I am trying to research everything out so I do have any stupid delays.
With the Mini, I want to use my 17" Apple CRT Studio Display with its 15-pin miniature D-type connector (I'm assuming that this is the typical VGA display connector). When I first started looking into the Mini, I figured that I could use a Mini-DVI to VGA connector and just be done with it. When I looked at the Mac Mini Accessories page that Apple set up, however, Apple says that I need a Mini Display Port to VGA adaptor and doesn't say boo about the Mini DVI adaptor. Doing some cursory Googling lead me to believe that the most current MacBooks and Minis will not support Mini DVI to VGA adaptors. Is this true?
If you were me, if either adaptor can be used, which VGA adaptor would you use? Is one superior over another? Inquiring minds want to know.
Thank you very much in advance for your reply.
    Sincerely,
    Malcolm Fuller

Personally, I'm using a minidisplayport to vga adapter I had to pay $30 for and it's working great for me and I can't tell the difference in image quality from the minidvi to dvi cable that comes with the mini.
Also, why not get the displayport so you can run 2 monitors at once?
If the displayport doesn't work with your monitor then I would try the mini-dvi version.
But yeah don't be suprised if you have to mess with it to make it work since it seems to work for some like me and not for others:

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Video Problem

This year at Randolph-Macon College we replaced the Math lab Emac computers with IMac G5 Intel machines. The laboratory has an NEC model MT1050 projector with a manufacturer’s date of August 2002. We can not seem to get rid of ever present scan lines. We can slow them down and speed them up by adjusting resolution and refresh rates, but nothing will remove them. We are connecting the IMac to the projector via the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. It is specifically designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), and the adapter connects to the Mini-DVI port of the computer and the VGA end of the adapter to an external VGA monitor or projector.
Troubleshooting the problem we have swapped IMac Intel computers with no luck, but we still have to use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. When we hook the projector to a Intel Mac Book Pro, we have to use a different adapter, but then it works perfectly. In fact, everything we try using other adapters works fine, it’s just when we use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter that we experience the video problem.
Has anyone experienced this problem and if so, have you been able to remedy it?
iMac (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't have much to suggest, except to ask if you can try with a different mini-DVI to VGA adapter. (i.e. do you have more than one on hand to make sure yours isn't just defective?) Make sure it is firmly seated into the iMac.
I use the same adapter to provide an extended desktop on an old CRT monitor and the display is great.

  • Mini-DVI to Video to SD TV, no NTC display setting, fuzzy B&W picture

I've seen several posts on this topic but I haven't seen a specific one that addresses my problem. I apologize for rehashing an old topic but I'm fairly desperate at this point.
I have a Mini-DVI to Video adapter (from Best Buy and yes, I heard they had problems but haven't been able to find exactly what those problems are). I live in the United States. I am trying to connect my Macbook to my SD CRT TV and cannot get it to properly work. My first problem is that I do not have a display selection option for NTSC, 720x468 at 60Hz in my "Display" window. The second problem is that for all of the 60Hz display options that I do have the picture is in B&W and scrolls or displays multiple skinny images.
    Please help!

The problem with the Dynex adapter, as near as I can tell, is that it doesn't have any EDID data inside of it. The Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter does have a valid EDID inside of it. That's probably why your MB doesn't know it's connected to a TV, because it isn't being told it is by the plug-and-display driver (EDID), which is either missing or not correctly formed.

  • Mini DVI to Video Curving

    Hi,
I just bought a mini-DVI to video cable and am hooking my macbook up to my tv through a composite video cable. It's not working properly and the picture on the tv curves at the edges, almost like it's projecting an image onto a regular tv that has a curved screen. My tv is a flat-screen CRT, not a curved one, and I can't find any options to change the settings so that it won't try to project a curved image. Anyone know anything on this?

reamsjp is right. That curving is in your TV. It is even present when you are watching normal TV programs but it can be hard to tell without straight lines in the image to reference. But if you really go looking for it, say by putting a TV guide table up on the screen that has a lot of straight lines in it, you will be able to see the same curvature.
Hopefully your TV has a submenu for making some adjustments as reamsjp says, but likely you won't be able to improve it much. It's the nature of the beast, flat screen or not.

  • DVI to Video adapter TV

My dvi to video adapter worked fine at first, when I connected to my CRT TVs. Now it is in black and white and the vertical hold keeps flipping. Tried it on two TVs same results. Tried rebooting same thing after the logon page. Help please

Try starting the Mac in Safe mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Hopefully that will result in a usable screen. If it does, go into Displays Preferences and change the resolution to what it was when you had things working properly before. Then restart normally and the resolution selection made under Safe mode should persist through the normal restart.
