DVI to HDMI overscan issue 1080p

Hello,
I have a LCD Samsung LE46A656 FullHD and a new macbook pro late 2008.
And have the 1080p resolution sized in mac osx but on the lcd left and right a black free place.
i see this thread, and a solution for 720p, now i search one for 1080p:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6405017
Please help me

If you go to "System Preferences" and check "Displays" when it's connected to the LCD, is "Mirroring" selected?
Sometimes if you use a photo with a black background as your desktop background photo, an attached Monitor will appear completely black . . . unless "Mirroring" is selected.
May be your problem is harder to solve than my solution, but doesn't hurt to try.
Let me know if that solves it.

  • Mac Mini G4 Unsupported Video Format DVI to HDMI 42 Phillips 1080P LCD TV

When connecting my Mac Mini G4 to my 42" Phillips 1080P LCD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable I get a message on the TV "Unsupported Video Format" message. I can connect my PowerBook G4 using the same cable and it connects great.
One thing I have noticed is when connecting my Mini via DVI cable to my 17" LCD monitor the screen is a fated red. But using a VGA cable the screen is fine. I don't know if this is having to do anything with the issue of connecting to my LCD TV.
    Any suggestions?

Make sure the connections are good and tighten down the thumb screws on all connectors. If two monitors are giving problems with DVI, it could be there is a hardware problem with the DVI port on the mini.
Also, try starting in Safe mode (boot while holding down the shift key) and see if you get a useable screen in that case. If you still get the unsupported video format message, then that would further suggest some hardware problem with DVI.

  • Mini dvi to hdmi connection issues

Trying to set up my 2007 imac to my Panasonic tv. I have a mini dvi to hdmi converter and an hdmi cable connected to my tv. I only get a blank screen on the tv, but it seems that the computer is connecting. When i go into sytem preferences for display monitoring I get the second screen saying Panasonic and set up which reolution I want but theres no way to detect the display. Do you have the correct HDMI input selected in the TVs menu...?

  • MINI DVI to HDMI Connection Issue

I have a July 2009 white macbook 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac OSX 10.5.8.
I have been trying to connect my laptop to a Sanyo 42in HDTV and a VIZIO 47in with no success. I purchased two different mini-DVI to HDMI cables(both with great reviews) and neither has worked. My laptop does pick up the signal from the TV and the TV does notice something has been picked up because it ocassionally flashes or says invlaid format. I have tried several different screen resolutions and have "Mirroring ON".
Any suggestions on what I can try to make this work?
I would really appreciate any help .. THANK YOU!

  • HDMI overscan to HDTV issue on x120e

I get very annoying overscan when i hook my x120e up to my Samsung UN55C6500 via HDMI. It's fine via VGA, but not via HDMI. CCC has no setting (that I can find) to fix the issue.
XBMC has it's own overscan correction so it's fine but win7 is very frustrating.
    any solutions?

Has there been a fix to this problem? I have had my x120e for nearly a year, but just tried to hook it up to my 1080p HDTV via HDMI for the first time. The overscan issue is horrible -- it's not off by just a pixel or two, but by a lot! I'm running the HDTV at 1920x1080 in extended monitor mode, not cloned mode, in Windows 7 64-bit, and I have the latest ATI drivers and CCC per the Lenovo x120e driver page.
Further, while the ATI documentation claims that it can be adjusted using the overscan slider, there is no such option anywhere in the actual software -- it's as if the help manual and the software are out of sync. I've tried everything I can find in CCC, but no luck. Meanwhile, the HDTV works just fine with my cable box, my Blu-ray player, and my other laptop via HDMI. So this is definitely an x120e/ATI issue, not a problem with my HDTV. I'll never buy another Lenovo with AMD/ATI graphics -- I've had compatibility problems with a couple of them now, but never with Intel graphics. For crying out loud, this is a digital display, not a CRT, so why should any adjustments be needed at all??
Help! Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks

  • MacBook Mini-DVI to HDMI not working on Vizio VO22LF 1080p

I recently purchased a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter so I can hook my macbook to my Vizio 1080p LCD TV. The macbook detects the TV correctly but no matter what I do the TV never detects the macbook on the hdmi input.
Doing some searches I saw discussion of a bug with 1080p that and a trick to get two 1920x1080 resolutions to show up in the display options but it never works for me.
When I connect to my 42" Panasonic 720p everything works great.
    Any thoughts??

This sounds a lot like the problem relating to an Apple disclaimer about the mini driving non-coherent displays which seems to especially affect the original G4 mini. See here under the "Video" sub-section:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP65
The problem is the timing for 1680 x 1050 will often have a dot clock above 135 MHz. There are really only a couple things you can do; one is to use the VGA interface as you have been and the second is to use a program like SwitchRes X to lower the pixel clock and stay with the DVI interface. If you want to go the SwitchRes X route, download and install it (get the SwitchRes X Control Panel version and not the full version of SwitchRes X) and then write back to this thread and I can take you through the steps you need to perform. • Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

The mini dvi on the MacBook will only support video, in order to get audio you'll need to a cable from the sound out port to the sound in port on the TV.

  • VGA v. DVI for Vizio plasma (overscan issues)

Looking to use my Vizio P42HDe plasma as a second monitor for Front Row - The Vizio has 1 DVI and 1 VGA input. I'm currently using the DVI port for my Motorola DVR, so I want to use the VGA port for the imac output if possible, but I'll use DVI if I have to and run everything else on component video. Unfortunately, I need to buy a separate adapter for either solution for the miniDVI port on the imac, so I can't use trial and error.
The P42HDe is a 1024x768 widescreen display, so the native resolution is stretched horizontally. I don't mind losing some resolution to compensate (e.g., 1024x576), since this will be primarily for Front Row. However, I had some overscan issues with an older VGA powerbook (the borders would be off the screen) and could not get it to both fit the screen and give me the correct aspect ratio. I have read that if you're using DVI with Tiger, there is a checkbox for "overscan" that will fix this and allow you to set a resolution having a correct 16:9 aspect ratio.
Has anyone used their iMac Core Duo with a similar stretched pixel display with VGA and/or DVI? (I have a PBG4 and iMac Core Duo both running 10.4.6)
    PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

DVI it is. I got both adapters and will return the VGA adapter this week.
All of the VGA settings would either stretch the image or overscan by the width of the menubar around the entire border.
Most of the DVI settings would stretch the image, but there was one 16:9 setting (approx 854:480 if I remember right). The display was recognized as "Vizio P42HD" and none of the settings exhibited any overscan. Strange that this would be the only available setting out of nearly ten "stretched" settings (it's a 1024:768 display), but Front Row looks great, which is all I was really interested in anyway, and it works as a second monitor in a pinch as well.
I'd prefer a setting in front row to display on the secondary monitor (front row always displays on the primary monitor), but I found a reasonable workaround. With the TV on, detect displays and set the TV as the primary monitor. When the TV is off, detect displays, and the menu and dock will return to the imac screen as the only available screen. Whenever you want to use front row on the TV, just turn it on, and detect displays and the menubar will return to the TV.
I'm going to try to make an applescript or automator action so that I can do this with my universal remote from my couch - I've already "learned" the apple remote codes, so now I just need to find a program that will execute actions based on IR input.

  • Mini-Dvi to HDMI or S-video, also sound issues

    Hello,
I want to connect my iMac with a Mini-Dvi port to a TV and want to hear the sound from the TV.
What adapters will i need to hook it up to a HDMI port, and will this connection also produce sound on the TV?
If that can't be done can I use a s-video adapter, and what about sound?
Last, do they have longer cables so you don't need your computer right beside the TV?
    Thanks

    You'll need Apple's mini-DVI to DVI adaptor plus a DVI-to-HDMI cable
(or a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor and an ordinary HDMI cable).

No. There are no audio signals on the mini-DVI connector. You'll have
to run a separate audio cable from the iMac's audio output to the TV.
The iMac's audio output is a "combo jack" that supports either analog
or digital (optical S/PDIF) audio. Your TV probably has an analog audio
input associated with one of its HDMI channels.

  • Mini-DVI to HDMI Issues

I have an early 2008 Macbook and have been using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable to connect to my TV.  It was working great until I upgraded to OS X Lion.  Now the video is laggy/glitchy on the TV and the computer when the cable is plugged in.  Any help?

Try gently moving the adapter into different positions. My mini-dvi to dvi adapter will only work if it is tilted upwards at about a 20 degree angle relative to the tabletop. I usually wedge a pen or a pencil below it to hold it at the proper angle. It's a little redneck, but I like shopping at walmart and only spent $5 on the adapter.

  • Dvi and hdmi issue

    hey ,
so i have bought the MSI b85m-g43 recently
and I'm new to computer building
it was my first time and everything went well but in the end i had a problem with the DVI and HDMI
when i connect it to the TV i only get no signal on screen
but that only when I connect it to the motherboard
when i connect it to the GPU everything work the HDMI and the DVI
I really hope there is a solution for this problem
and if some1 could help I'll be rlly thankful to him
btw the usb and internet input works
and sorry for the bad English
    thanks in advance

the CPU has a Graphics Chip in it (Intel® HD Graphics 4600 on that I5-4670k) that is what is used for the onboard outputs on the motherboard and if the graphics card is not in it should switch automatically to that one on the CPU!
it should work without a dedicated graphics card in there like you have because if you are planning anyway to get rid of that one and only have it in to get a display then its pretty much pointless as the CPU can do that on its own! A Graphics card should be used for gaming if its better then your onboard chip so give it a go without the graphics card and see if it turns on the motherboards display outputs!
(motherboards like that will switch to PCI-Express Graphics as they are usually more powerful) but before you try that what is the Graphics card in question here that you have plugged in?

  • Mini DVI to HDMI problem, won't play DVD movie full screen on TV

I use a mini-DVI port adapter with a DVI to HDMI cable to a 32" 1080p TV. When I play the DVD player screen on the TV and select full screen mode, the screen shifts back to macbook and displays full screen on the mac and the TV displays a black looking background. This issue only started after installing Lion.

Thanks for that. I have a Y adapter (3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound just like you said). Under input options on my TV, I can select either HDMI1 input (which gives me video only) or AV1/S input (which gives me audio only) - not both at once...Could you explain how I can get stereo audio on my TV?

  • Thunderbolt iMac - mini-dvi to HDMI - Image not sharp on TV

I am trying to use my TV as a second monitor for my newish iMac.  I used to do the same thing with my macbook (2006) with a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter.  The signal then was crisp and typical of 1080p.  I recently tried two different mini-displayport to hdmi adapters to output my monitor from the thunderbolt port of the iMac.  The first was a cheap one and the second was a better one.  Each time, the TV says the signal is 1080p, but the image is blurry, although sound does work.
The TV and the HDMI cable is the same as my old macbook which worked perfectly.  Also, I have been using Windows 7 with bootcamp and the image is the same.  This limits the problems to the graphics output, port, or adapter.  As multiple adapters still have issues, I don't know it anything else may help it.
Is there much possibility that there is something with the computer, either graphics card or port itself, that could cause this, or maybe something software wise that could be an issue?

Check under the system settings to make sure you are putting out the correct signal. If it is set at the correct resolution then your TV doesn't have enough Hz. Hope that helps!

  • Mac mini - dvi to hdmi and 1380x768 resolution

    Hi,
I've connected my mac mini to a samsung television with a dvi - hdmi cable. Running 1280x720 I get a very nice picture, but also a black belt around the picture. In order to use the full screen (but not overscan) I suspect a 1380x768 resolution is called for. How do I get about that?
    Kind regards, Torben

    Just to update this:
Got my DVI to HDMI cable today!
Plugged it in, booted her up and was presented with a perfect 1080p HDMI signal without having to alter any display settings.
    Fantastic!
In my display menu I have 10 resolutions to play with with , 3 of which are full 1080p, one is specifically for PAL tv in the UK.
    Couldn't be happier!
Hope this thread helps anybody who is having any connecting woes between their mac mini and their sharp TV
    Thanks

  • Seeking successful DVI to HDMI Conversion at 1920x1080 on a Mac Mini

I've seen lots of posts related to this topic, but nothing definitive, and I'm still trying to figure this out. Let me start by saying that:
    1) I understand the option of going from DVI to VGA. That works fine on my equipment (late model Mac Mini to Sony 46" LCD XBR3).
    2) I've validated the HDMI port on my TV at 1080i and I'm sure it does 1080p (i.e. 1920x1080 non-interlaced) as well, based on the specs
    3) I don't care about integrating audio into the HDMI signal at this point
    4) Sony support provides no help, saying it must be a computer problem
    5) Apple support provides no help, saying they don't support 3rd party monitors
The lousy looking output (i.e. interpolated, shrunk, expanded, based on the combination of driver and tv "modes") I'm getting is described elsewhere on this forum. Some other things are:
    1) The Mac Mini recognizes the display as "Sony TV" but only offers resolution choices up to "1090 x 1080 (interlaced)". Although that suggests that either the driver isn't current or the tv and driver aren't talking to each other properly about the tv's capabilities, that still doesn't explain the visual results I'm getting.
    2) The DVI-to-HDMI converter cable says it is based on the HDMI 1.1 spec. The TV says it supports HDMI 1.3. I don't know if that's an issue.
Any help would be appreciated. This isn't the end of the world, as I can still connect through VGA, but I'd like to get the DVI-to-HDMI working so I can reserve my TV's VGA port for computers that don't have the DVI option.
    Pete
P.S. Anyone have any idea when Apple is coming out with a version of the Mac Mini (or some Mac-based settop box) that supports HDMI with integrated video/audio?

Does the Sony manual make any reference to a computer connection? If so, which port does it recommend? On a lot of TVs the HDMI port can't be used successfully for a computer connection because there is always a scaler/processor active that cannot be bypassed.
You might want to check at the AVSforum.com and search for your specific Sony model number to see if anybody there is reporting success connecting a computer to the HDMI port.
