DVI to Projector... 1080i???

I just got my MacBook and made sure that the first accessory I got was the mini-DVI to DVI adapter so I can hook my computer up to my Sanyo HD Projector. Unfortunately, I cannot get a high-definition signal (1080i preferably). I used to hook up my PC desktop using component video and get 1080i without a problem. Now the "it just works" factor I was looking forward to in the MacBook doesnt seem to be pulling through. Any ideas? I've looked at DisplayConfigX but dont really understand what settings to try.
Also, the MacBook recognizes the projector, name and all, but only outputs at 1024x768 or lower, I dont receive any options for a 16:9 resolution, let alone 1080i.
Thanks,
Mike

  • Mini DVI to Projector Problems

I could use some help figuring out why this setup isn't working...
I'm trying to connect my (early 2009) Mac Mini to my Optoma Projector. The projector isn't getting a signal at all. I already have a 50ft VGA cable running through my attic, so I'm trying to work with that. Here is the signal path I'm trying to run:
Mac Mini mini-DVI port <-> mini-DVI to VGA adapter <-> VGA Cable <-> VGA to DVI-I adapter <-> DVI-A input on projector
The same setup worked when I had a PC laptop VGA output <-> VGA Cable <-> VGA to DVI-I adapter <-> DVI-A input on projector. Therefore, I know the DVI-I adapter and the DVI-A input work properly and play well together.
I tried connecting my Black Mac Book instead of the Mac Mini, and the projector still gets no signal. Since the laptop has its own display, it allowed me to see in the Display panel that the computer in fact 'sees' the Optoma HD72 as a secondary display.
Any ideas to get this thing working?

50 ft. of VGA cable is a pretty long run. The obvious thing to try would be to shorten up that cable and see if it works. I'm guessing that can't be a final solution for your setup, but it's something to try to determine if, in fact, the mini doesn't have enough drive for that length cable run. The problem is more likely with the sync drive level, not the video drive level. So the projector isn't getting sync. That would be my guess. If that is the issue, then you could look into getting a VGA signal amp/booster as a solution.
Is driving digitally an option? Sometimes it can be easier to push digital over those distances, though it's by no means guaranteed. One advantage to digital is that, if it works, it works. There is no degradation. With analog, the signal that arrives at the projector is not the one that left the mini. Not at that distance.

  • Macbook mini-dvi -- VGA projector problems

    Hi
At the school i teach at we have problems hooking up our new macbooks to one of our projectors. We use a mini-dvi --> VGA cable to hook up the projector. The mac recognises the projector and it gets listed under screens, the resolution also changes. But no picture is beeing projected by the projector.
If we use a mini-dvi --> s/video/rca cable it works fine, but the quality of the picture is too low. The projector works nicely with the older macs we have, wich use the mini-dv --> vga cable.
Any toughts on what may be the problem, or what we could try?

I am having the same problem. I have to do powerpoint presentations at college and it was so embarrassing to go up there and my macbook not sync up. It use to work. I even bought a new adapter. It did not fix the problem. All the windows laptops were able to sync up to the projector but mine did not. This one one of the main reasons I bought a macbook. I need to take my work to school and connect to projectors. I am using the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. There appears to be no physical damage. When I click detect displays nothing happens. Now I have to redo everything on windows. Please, I hope someone has a fix for this. I am using the following; 2 GHZ Intel Core 2 DUo, 1 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.10

  • Socket mini DVI and projector DLP DVI

    Hi,
I would want to know if it's possible to link the Projector Toshiba Mt200 (DVI) and the new Imac with mini DVI.
    cheers
    Andrea

I just checked the Apple Store web site--the video-out port on the 12" PowerBook is mini-DVI. The cable/adapter supplied with the 12" PowerBook is a mini-DVI to VGA cable and works with the Intel iMac. I have a 12" iBook G4, and when my Intel iMac arrives tomorrow, I will try out the cable. I'm guessing the iBook and PowerBook cable is identical, though the website says nothing about iBooks.
From the Apple Store web page:
"The Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter is designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo) and 12-inch PowerBook G4. Connect the adapter to the Mini-DVI port of the PowerBook G4 and the VGA end of the adapter to an external VGA monitor or projector. Both video-mirroring and extended desktop modes are supported."

  • Thunderbolt to DVI to projector scaling

The image on my Canon SX80 is small and un-zoomable when connected to the thunderbolt port through the adapter that I got with an earlier macbook pro.
When I backed off to the Macbook pro with the same cable and configuration the dispplay behaved normally.  In each case, the resolution of the display set in keynote was 1400x1080, the display's native resolutiion.
Is this behavior due to the connector, the Thunderbolt characteristics, or something else?  At this point, I am going to just use the older laptop instead of the Air.
Glad I didn't sell it when I bought the Macbook Air.

    Hello,
    From the news page here...
    http://xlr8yourmac.com/
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • HDMI to DVI for rentals

Want to connect HDMI from ATV to DVI on projector, does this work for movie rentals or does DRM stop it?

    David Owen3 wrote:
Other reports suggest that a HDMI to DVI cable will work with rental movies. My projector has DVI (HDCP supported). Can someone please clarify this and if cable length is an issue.
in which case, it entirely depends if DVI port you have supports HDCP.

  • Projector not being outputted by iMac

I am trying to connect a projector to my iMac (2011) and the video will not output. Is this simply because there is no cables that work with the Thunderbolt yet?

    I'm having the same issue.
2011 iMac 27" > thunderbolt port > Apple adapter to DVI > DVI cable > projector.
The picture shows up for a second then goes away.
If we hook up an old MBP 17" out the DVI port to the same cable it works perfectly.
I also tried my new 13" MBA, same issue as the iMac, picture for one second, then nothing.
    Other tests:
I can hook the 13" MBA to a VGA cable and a 47" TV, it works perfect.
I can hook the above iMac, with the same Apple adapter to DVI, same DVI cable, to monitor and it works perfectly.
It looks like the problem is with the thunderbolt port when connecting to projectors.
Do I need a signal booster?  Why does the TV & monitor work and not the projector?  Why would an OLD MBP work w/ the projector when the new iMac or MBA doesn't?

  • Keynote projector recomendation

    Hi Folks,
A bit off the typical Keynote topic, but I am looking for recommendations on a DVI capable projector with high light output (min 2000 ANSI Lumens), small size, high res (1280 x854) and great color rendition.
I am going to be doing a raft of Keynote presentations in 2006 and I am tired of the hit or miss projector quality and high cost of rental I have run into in the past at hotel's AV departments..
    Mike Pappas
    Powerbook 15 inch G4 1.25 GHz 2 GB DDR SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hmmmmmm.......There are a couple of things you should keep in mind.
First of all, the high res you specify might not be worth the extra money. I'm looking over the InFocus product line, and they have one model (the LP-860) that has native 1400x1050 resolution. That's an LCD projector, it weighs about 17 pounds, and lists for slightly less than $7,000. I don't know about other manufacturers, but unless you really need the 1280x854 resolurtion, go for a 1024x768 projector. Ideally you should drive that projector at 1024x768, but if you can't, most projectors these days can do a nice job of scaling.
Second, which is more important to you: small size, or good color? That's basically your trade off these days in projectors. The LCD projectors are going to give you the best color rendition. They are also going to be heavier and bigger than the DLP models. That said, the DLP projectors do a nice job with colors.
Take a look at the InFocus LP-120. It's a DLP projector, it's quite bright, and it is so tiny that you could easily carry it in the same bag as your computer. The bad thing about it is that it uses a proprietary connector where the computer plugs in (it looks like a DVI connector, but it's bigger and has more pins).
Of course there are other tiny projectors out there, but that's the smallest one that I've actually seen 'in person'. We have a couple of Dell-branded projectors, but they're larger and less bright than the LP-120.
In your research, be sure to consider lamp type, expected lifetime, and replacement cost! One of the big advantages to the DLP projectors (besides the size) is that the DLP engine passes so much light to the lens (there is nothing but the color wheel between the light and the lens, unlike in an LCD where there are three LCD panels, a bunch of mirrors and a couple of prisms in the light path) that some of the manufacturers are switching to lamps that are longer lasting and a lot less expensive than the UHP metal halide stuff they've been using for years.
My job is to (among other things) install and maintain data projectors for a University. I tend to use the InFocus product because that's the product for which I can get the best support from my dealers. So that's what I'll talk about when I am talking projectors. I suggest that you not automatically take that as an endorsement of their product line. I'm not going to make a specific suggestion (apart from 'look at the LP120 among all the stuff out there') but I hope you find some of the details here useful.

  • Connect iMac 2011 to Benq W1100 projector over a 15m cable

I want to connect my shiny new imac 27" 3.1 GHz intel core i5 to my benq w1100 projector. I have a pipe already in the wall/celling from mac to living room. the pipe has an inner diameter of 20mm. the length of the cable has to be approximately 15m. i want to maitain the highest possible resolution. audio is not required. What is the best solution for me?

What is the resolution of the projector?  If greater than 1920 x 1200 you need a dual link dvi adapter?
OLD Mac Book Pro 17" > DVI port > DVI cable > projector = WORKS!
Based on my theory I assume that the dvi port on that macbook pro is dual link.

  • Producing and playing back a multi-image show

I've been asked by a photographer friend to produce a 'show' of his work (projected to an audience of about 200). Many of his photos are high quality landscape panoramas.
My hopes are to produce a soundtrack and have images moving/dissolving in synchronisation with it. I'd also like to have it projected at the highest quality, possibly with multi-screens.... maybe utilising 2 or 3 decent (matched) projectors.
    Where to start???
How can I synchronise 2-3 projectors... what do I playback from... do I do 2-3 movies from FCP...???
There is a sponsor who wants to know how much it will cost... so I'd like to look at a couple of options.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts/ideas.
    Steve

There are specialized "video wall" software/hardware solutions. I've never used them so can't comment on their applicability for your purposes.
A simpler way may be to acquire a Matrox Triple head to go DVI splitter and 3 DVI capable projectors.
Set up your project as a super wide screen custom sequence (eg 3x 1280x720p = 3840x720 progressive) and place your images within that framework. When you play it back, stretch the playback image over the three projectors.
I have no idea whether this would actually work ... lol. but one thing to be aware of is the the three projectors will not likely all be able to display exactly the same color at the same time. What this means is if you have images that slide from one display to another, there is likely to be a discernable color shift.

  • Apple Tv(HDMI)  to projector (DVI-D)

I just received an apple tv and trying to make it work on a projector.
The projector have only a DVI-D connector so I bought a HDMI cable and the connector DVI-D/HDMI
The only image I get on my screen is the Apple Logo.
I did try the Apple Tv on my HD TV and it work well.
I tought it was my WIFI that was not working well so I hook both Apple Tv and My router with an ethernet cable, Same result.
I have a nice Apple silver on my screen
    Any help will be appreciate

    Thank You Winston
The projector I have is Panasonic LCD Projector, can do 720p, 1080i/60 and /50
    The model is PT-L780U
I'm trying to find if this projector is compatable with HDCP
    Can't find the answer yet

  • Dvi projector won't recognize new Apple TV

I'm trying to connect a new apple tv to this Planar projector PR5022 High-Bright XGA DLP Projector = http://www.planar.com/products/projectors/pr5022/
I have an HDMI to DVI-D cable connecting the ATV to the DVI-D input on the projector, but the projector doesn't know that the ATV is connected. It says that there is no source or input or signal when I change the source to the DVI input. Can anyone provide any help, feeback, or suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
p.s. I need to know a solution ASAP.

Computer only most likely means the input is not HDCP compliant, (content protection is required for video playback).  HDMI inputs and some newer DVI equipped displays offer this.
It is possible that the frequencies that input recognizes doesn't include SMPTE rates such as 1080P, 1080i, and 720P, but that is more unlikely than the first bit.

  • No signal via DVI to VGA adapter on my video projector Sharp PGM 15X

    Hi there!
I have a big problem with my video projector. It´s connected via mini DVI to VGA adapter to
the projector. The problem is, Mac OSX decect the projector but there is no picture.
To resize the solution on both, or one of them doesn´t help.
When I use my Bootcamp and reboot with Windows XP there is a picture on the video projector.
    I cant believe this.
What should I do to fix this problem?

I got my Mac Mini yesterday and I am having the exact same problem as you are having.
I've tried on two different TV's but it is just not sending a signal. Is it faulty?

  • Mini DVI to VGA cable doesn't send signal to the projector

I just received a mini DVI to VGA adapter cable today.
I connect mini DVI side of cable into my Macbook v. 4.1 and connect the other side into DGA cable, which connected to LCD projector.
When I connect the cable to my Macbook, the opened application streched out to a full screen (seems like computer detets the cable) but projector says 'no signal'.
Can any one tell me what is wrong it is?
    Thanks much
    Mike

    I'm still stucked.
By reading some articles, it says even using mini DVI adapter, the signal is still digital and if the projector doesn't accept digital signal then it's no use....
My projector is Epson EX3200 and it doesn't have any DVI or HDMI input.
Does this mean my projector doesn't accept a digital signal?
But, but, but if even uing mini DVI adapter cable it still doesn't conver to analog signal then why they call the cable a mini DVI to VGA cable???
Why should this world be so complecated.....

  • Mini Dvi to VGA for Projector issue

I recently bought a mini DVI to VGA adapter for my new macbook Black 2.4 ghz. When I hook this up to the projector nothing comes through, but the computer recognizes the projector. I know it is not the projector because when I plug in my 12inch powerbook it instantly recognizes the computer and displays whatever is on the screen. I even returned the adapter for a new one and am still having the problem. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Are there steps that I'm not doing, or is there something wrong with the mini dvi on my macbook?

When I attach my MacBook to a projector via mini DVI, all variations of order of activation used, the desktop image appears, but the icons and other open pages are off the screen to the right.
Of greater importance, Keynote presentations appear as two slides side by side, with a timer under the left image and no transitions.
This has happened with two portable projectors and one overhead, exactly the same images with each.
