DVI to s-video adpater for Power Mac G4?

I'm attempting to view digitial photos on my Power Mac G4 on an HDTV with an s-video connection. I've tried Apple's "DVI to video adapter" for the Power Mac G5, but it doesn't work, even after clicking "Detect Displays".
Is there a DVI to s-video adapater from Apple or anybody else that will work with the Power Mac G4? If not, are there any other options?

The Apple DVI to Video converter only works with certain graphics cards. The card has to be able to generate interlaced video at the correct scan rate, and modulate the color onto a carrier signal. For other card you would need a scan converter like:

This device has a VGA input, so you might need a DVI to VGA adapter. There may be other devices available with DVI input.

If you don't need the ADC port, a flashed FireGL X3 makes a nice dual DVI X800XT .
The Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL is always a performance value.

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

Can I use my new iMac 20" as a monitor for for Power Mac G5?

Actually I want to buy the new iMac 20" computer with the intel and then randomly use the iMac as a monitor display for my Power Mac G5 when I am editing video and then unhook it and use the Imac as a stand alone when I'm not editing video with my Power Mac. Will this work please. Thank You

It's not possible to use either the iMac (Flat Panel) (G4) or the new Intel iMacs as displays. The only options would be:
VNC set-up. It's fairly low speed of refresh would probably make this undesirable for your situation: Screen Recycler (link)
A video-in device. A device like Elgato's EyeTV Hybrid (link) would not be of sufficiently high resolution to be any use for video editing.

Need new low-end graphics card for Power Mac G5 (PowerPC 970)

My Power Mac G5 (PowerPC 970) has recently died I believe due to a bad
ATI RADEON X800 XT MAC EDITION video card.
Reason for thinking its the card, is that the machine was performing its intended tasks for several days even though the monitor was snow.
Having trouble determining a low-end replacement. (I no longer need the enhanced features of the RADEON X800 for this machine.
Much appreciated if someone could suggest a product appropriate for PowerPC 970.

I also ran into this issue with my dual G5. When I bought it, I didn't get wireless because it was a dedicated desktop on the network, but I'm upgrading and giving it to the kids to use in a room without wired network. Now that wireless would be really nice and it looks like the official solution is:
"Apple Wireless Upgrade Kit for Power Mac G5 Dual or Power Mac G5 Quad MA252G/A"
which is really expensive and difficult to install. But the weird thing is that I do have bluetooth. I wonder if there's just some little doodad I need to connect to get wireless going too, but I can't find any info on the card, and it looks like it's buried on the motherboard behind all the cooling stuff. I'll probably just spring for one of the USB solutions.

The ZIF processor upgrade I have in my Beige G3 MT (300 mHz originally) is a Sonnet G3/500--I wish it were a G4! I installed it when I still had OS9. It stayed in place when I installed Jaguar and, later, Panther.
As Grant mentions, I used a third-party helper program called XPostFacto, "XPF" for short. Installing "unsupported" Panther with XPF was far easier than installing the "supported" Jaguar and the computer is now more stable.
T'was Grant who talked me into trying Panther. Now I can't believe I waited so long! I used an older version of XPF, version 3.1, at Grant's suggestion. V3.1 seems to be the "sweet spot" for installing Panther. Some Beige G3 owners have successfully installed 10.4.x with later version of XPF but more users have reported stability issues than with 10.3.

Video Card Recommendation for Power Mac G5 Quad

Can anyone recommend a video card upgrade for my Power Mac G5 Quad?
I am now running the nVIDIA GeForce 6600 card that came in the machine, but I'm wondering how much performance increase I'll see with a large image library in Aperture if I upgrade. I'm interested in all comments.
Also, is there a "medium" upgrade and a "kick-***" upgrade?

I hate to say it: At the moment there is no graphics card upgrade available for the G5 Quad and the other PCI-Express Power Macs. There are a lot of threads about this topic in this forum. It is simply a shame that Apple does not offer any graphics upgrade for their former top of the line machines - but they do offer them for their new Intel Mac Pro. Maybe one day ATI will offer an upgrade, but at the moment this is just a rumor. All you can do now is to buy a reflashed PC version of the GeForce 7800 or buy a ridiculously priced spare part GeForce 7800 from a store who is willing to sell you one (there is one on the web but i forgot the url).

Dual monitor for Power mac g5 dual 2.3ghz

I wanted some advice on which monitors to get for a dual monitor setup and if its even possible to setup on my G5 or do I need a different video card?
Here's my computer spechs:
Power mac G5 dual core 2.3 ghz (late 2005)

Memory: 2GB DDR2 SDRAM
HDD: 250GB
OS X 10.5.8 Leopard
The only thing I run on this is logic studio 8. I wanted to expand my setup but not sure how.

It depends on which video card you have installed, though not much. Whichever card you have installed, you should have two DVI outputs available. With the minimum 256 Meg VRAM, you should be able to support two 1920x1080 monitors without a problem, and the "HD" monitors are getting very plentiful and dropping in price. Were I to buy today, I would make sure to get an LED monitor, as that flavor should have a longer overall life than a florescent panel monitor. You can find monitors in 23" dimensions for under $200 a pop, and more 27" monitors are showing up at a slightly bigger bite.

Sound Card for Power Mac G4 Quicksilver

I was having a look around for sound cards for the Power Mac G4 Quicksilver and read about the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 and 7.1. Are these the best sound cards available for the G4 Quicksilver? Are there better ones?

I've started using the iMic by Griffin. It's an USB stereo input/output audio adapter with both mic and line level input/ouput. They provide a free download of their audio editing software called Finyl Vinyl (I think), which lets you record and edit audio mainly (though you can input video with the adapter - need different software though). Though it's intended mainly for recording from turntables, you can input and edit most any audio with a mini plug to RCA jacks cable. I've used a cassette deck and a mini disc recorder so far. I haven't played much with the mic input so far, but the line in audio is very good (I've worked in community radio for a while now, so I have a pretty good ear). The adapter also works with other audio editing software like Audacity and Logic Express (possibly Garageband too, I haven't tried). And it's available for under $30 on places like eBay.

You've got it connected, and you're viewing it already! Connect it up again, and try dragging a window either to the left, or right, off your built-in screen. You'll find that it appears on your TV!
What you're doing is running the computer in "extended desktop" mode. That means that your TV screen is available to put things on, but won't show your menu bar, dock, or icons. Those remain on the "primary screen" which remains your MBP's built-in display.
When the TV is plugged in, go to System Preferences --> Displays
The main System Preferences window will remain on your MBP's screen, but a second one should appear on the TV as well. If you go to the one on your MBP's screen, and click the "Arrangement" tab, you'll see two screens shown in the diagram. One will have a menubar. That's your MBPs screen. You can drag the menubar to the other screen to change the primary screen to the TV.
OR, you can just click "Mirror Displays" and your TV will show the exact same picture as your MBP display. This option is the simplest and will accomplish what you want, I think.

Optical Fun for Power Mac G5 - Chosing a Burner

Hi all,
So I have a Power Mac G5 with a burner that is not so great anymore. I burn at 1x for DVDs and on good days, burn a CD at 4x. Time for a new burner you would say. I would agree.
I have a predicament and wondered if anyone suggests a burner to go with. I'm not looking to spend a lot and just want something that would work well and fit nicely.

Hi. The Pioneer 112D is often recommended in these forums - can't recall any adverse reports. I installed a previous version, the 110D, with no problems - works well.

Installation is a bit fiddly, but not difficult. There are two things to check: that the stand-offs (see Figure 8 of the installation instructions) are the right length to line the drive up with the aperture in the G5 casing - and that you remove the plastic bezel with CD, DVD, etc. on it from the front edge of the tray, so it doesn't catch on the edge of the aperture in the G5 casing - discussed here

If your current drive is a Pioneer, the stand-offs should be re-usable. If not, they may be able to be adjusted by not screwing them in fully, and then locking the thread with Loctite or similar.
The drive should be recognised in Blue Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info > Hardware > Disc Burning (System Profiler). If there are any problems, please post again. Good Luck.

External CD drive for power mac 8100

I have an 18 year old power mac 8100/80 AV. It has an internal CD drive that is read only. I need a cd drive that is read/write so that I can copy thousands of files off the mac. I'm assuming that an external drive may be the best route, rather than removing the old drive and installiing a new one. Can someone please advise on two points:
1. Is the external read/write CD drive the right way to go?
2. Where can I obtain said drive?

Thanks for your suggestions. I have to say that I'm not yet sure what to do. I don't want to buy hardware unless I have to, and both of you appear to agree on this point. I plan to give away or recycle the powermac when I get the files off it as I have no use or space for it. I don't need to move the files to a CD; I need to move them to a PC (where I can read them) so I can get rid of the powermac.
The 2,500 files on the powermac are mostly in MS Word, in the first version that was PC and Mac compatible, so I believe I can read them with no problem on my PC when I get them there. Is this a good assumption? Or am I going to run into a conversion problem like Ji~m mentions?
I can't use the 3.5(?) inch "floppy" disk drive in the powermac because it gets formatted to mac-compatible before I copy files to it, and then the PC can't read it.
So I thought of the CD solution I mentioned in my first post because I believe a physical CD reads and writes on both the mac and the PC without being re-formatted. Is this correct?
I like the idea of a cable like Jan mentioned. I googled "AAUI to RJ-45 adapter" and can't tell from the pictures I viewed if I have a matching "AAUI Ethernet port" on the powermac. It has MANY ports, but nearly all are unlabeled! How do I determine what port might be the AAUI that Jan mentions?
If I use the cable suggestion (which I like), can I plug the other end into a PC? That's all I have -- this old powermac (OS 8.6) and several PCs (Dell and HP) with several OS's (W - XP, Vista, 7, and maybe 8). (Jan mentioned moving the files over a network, but the only "network" I have is my in-house router connecting my PCs to the i-net.) So how would I follow your cable suggestion?
