Dvi to vga converter not working anywhere

Hi guys, recently my lcd screen went completely black, the macbook pro (from 2007) still turns on and still makes sounds, but the screen is completely black. i need to save important info so i used the dvi to vga adapter (not the mini one but the one i got with it in 07) and i tried it on 2 old moniters, and 2 new lcd monitors. none of them work, i am very concerned. the 2 moniters just stayed black, and the 2 lcds said "no signal, going to sleep". guys what's going on, please help me

do you still hear the chime? try the smc reset - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
& the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
if your screen is still black, then your video card has likely failed, so you won't see a display at all.
to recover data, boot the machine holding T. once it chimes, hold it for about a minute or so. now plug the mac into another via firewire cable. if it's another intel mac, you should be able to boot from yours, restart the 2nd mac holding OPTION, select your drive when it's listed & press return. you should then be able to reover files, export contacts, bookmarks, etc. to another drive or to DVDs.

  • G5 dvi to vga adapter not working

DVI to VGA adapter not working with my G5 Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC. I am trying to use a VGA Monitor but can not get a signal. I also am using a Dell with a DVI Input and that works fine using a DVI Cable from my G5 to the Dell u2410.

    Bad adapter?
The G5 ports are DVI-I. Any good DVI-I to VGA adapter should be fine.

  • Mini DVI to VGA adapter not working

    Hello -
I just purchased a new Mini DVI to VGA adapter to use with my Mac Book. The day I bought it I plugged it in and worked great! Now after disconnecting it and reconnecting back to my Mac Book things are not so good. When I hook everything up to each other the monitor shows "no signal". Using Systems Preferences/Detect Display does not help at all. Am I missing something obvious here? I'm a new Mac junkie.

Here is an Apple article on the subject of having no video on an external monitor. It's written about the Mac mini, but it applies equally to any other Mac.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301345
And here is another Apple article that is more generalized and with fewer suggestions, though it might be a good place to start from. Good luck.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 DVI HDMI out does not work with TV when the power cable is connected

My Macbook Pro (Early 2011) DVI HDMI out does not work with TV when the power cable is connected. If get the blue screen and then can use the macbook but nothing is displayed on the TV. If i go into display I can see that there are two screens but nothing displayed on the TV. If i take the power cable out at this point the TV shows the second desktop as expected. If i then reconnect the cable, the screen flickers, as though it is being affected by the power cable, and the screen goes blank on the TV. Only if i remove the DVI cable do i get the blue screen again. If i remove the power cable and reconnect it will do it every single time, so i cannot see it being a TV issue or a minor glitch.
I have had this working previously but at the minute it seems to not be playing ball....any thoughts
    Thanks

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI and VGA - Does it work or not?

I have just received my new aluminium MacBook Pro, and I think it is awesome. I can even get over the fact that it lacks the full-size DVI connection like the old one has just because it is so nice and shiny. I do need it to work with both DVI and VGA displays though, so I know I will need to buy an adaptor.
My question is: If I buy either the mini DisplayPort to DVI or the dual-DVI adaptor from the apple store, will either one of them work with a DVI-VGA cable? I have heard so far that the single-DVI adaptor does NOT support the VGA pass-through, but would like some confirmation. Even if it is cheaper to buy both the DVI and VGA adaptors I would prefer the dual-DVI adaptor as long as it can do VGA as well, because one adaptor is better than 2.

As far as I know daisy chaining adapters will not work for the MiniDisplay port. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8300784#8300784
You will need to buy both adapters, the MiniDisplay to DVI and a MiniDisplay to VGA. I would also suggest you voice your opinion at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and let them know how you feel about needing to purchase an adapter when one should be included with the computer purchase.

  • DVI to Video Adapter Not Working...

    Hi,
I bought this thingy to view video from my Dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 on a Panasonic HDTV, using one of its s-video inputs. The video is blank when I switch to that input. I tried using the "Detect Displays" in the Displays preference panel. I do get a picture, but it's heavily distorted no matter what resolution I've tried - it's treated as a VGA display. Composite output from the adapter does not work at all.
The video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 6600LE (came with the computer - two DVI outputs). Apple claims this adapter works on Power Mac G5 with DVI port, but I don't think it does. I also tried hooking it up to a VCR as Apple claims you can do, but no luck there either.
Any advice or alternatives outside of Apple TV appreciated.

Thanks for the technical information. That was very helpful. I took the adapter to my local Apple Store (even tho I didn 't buy it there) and asked them to test it, but they couldn't get to for a couple of hours. But, they gladly gave me a new one to try at no charge.
As before, I plugged it into port 2 of the graphics card with an s-video cable to the tv. No success - except the picture was completely blank on the TV instead of distorted like before. Port 1 was occupied with a VGA monitor. I shut down the computer, TV, and unplugged both ports. I then moved the adapter from port 2 to port 1 and left port 2 open, meaning the VGA monitor wasn't connected to the graphics card at all.
I turned the TV back on and restarted the computer. Lo and behold - after the booting process was done, my desktop appeared on the TV. I shut down the computer again and reconnected the VGA monitor. Ta-dah! - I now have dual monitors.
As a further test, I hooked up the s-video from the adapter to my DVD recorder and recorded the video output from a full screen QT video to its built-in hard drive. That was successful as well. The only problem is that there is a minimal black border around the video since I was not able to pick a resolution for the TV that fills the entire screen. I may need to play with TV's aspect settings to get rid of the border, or crop it out later.
All that's left is to capture the audio and sync it with the video, then output to my format of choice. There's my fair use copy. The quality of the video won't be as good as the original, but what the heck - I'm the only one using it anyway.
Apple should find a way to convince TV and movie studios to sell their stuff on iTunes Store without DRM, at a higher price - like EMI is doing with their music. I would gladly pay the difference just so I could convert and burn my videos to DVD with iDVD or DVD Studio Pro.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI to VGA doesn't work (why?!)

I purchased a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor from eBay. It works just fine when connected to a DVI cable to a monitor, but there's no signal when I put a DVI to VGA adapter in-between to connect it to a VGA only display. I was hoping to use a single Mini DisplayPort cable to handle both DVI and VGA connections - am I missing something here?
Here's an image of the connection path: http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/313/photors.jpg
    Thanks

Someone on Twitter mentioned the Mini DisplayPort to DVI output is DVI-D only, which means the VGA adapter wouldn't receive an analogue signal to convert to VGA.
Exactly correct. When you plug a DVI adaptor into mDP the port only sends out the digital signal. Likewise, when you plug a VGA adaptor into mDP the port sends only the analog signal. So using two adaptors in tandem is not possible. You need a separate adaptor for DVI and for VGA, unfortunately.

  • Thunderbolt to VGA Adapter not working with SMART board all of a sudden?

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on getting my classroom's (I'm student teaching) SMART board connected to my macbook pro (13 in).  Two days ago I tested the setup I had, Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, Mac OS X SMART software suite and it worked flawlessly.  Today I try the setup and although the SMART board recognizes my macbook via usb, the projector does not display anything.  System preferences does not even recognize the projector as an external monitor.  When I plug in my Mini-DVI to VGA adapter (already attached to the VGA cord from the SB) the screen flashes black and goes back to normal.  Official work from SMART technologies is there is no supported adapters for connecting a macbook to a SB but I have seen numerous threads about this setup working and like I said it was previously working fine. Any suggestions on what to try next? I was thinking of dual booting to an older version of OS X. Thanks.
    Specs:
    MacBook Pro 13 in
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    10.9.1

If your laptop is not connected to power (i.e., plugged in to a wall), try plugging it in.  It is not uncommon for a laptop to send the VGA signal out with less power when it is on battery power.  I've seen this fix this problem, at least, dozens of times.
Try connecting the VGA cable to your adapter while the smart board display is on THEN plug the adapter in to your computer.
Also, try connecting the VGA+Adapter to your mac before booting it (or connect the macbook to the vga cable and then reboot the macbook).  I've seen this work with macbooks using vga on projectors (or other external displays running through longer cables or crestron/extron/whatever switching equipment) many many times too.
If these fail, get your campus AV (or IT) people involved.  We have often found that a damaged cable or long run needing amplification will work with some computers but not with others.  It could be that the cable running from the smart board is somewhat sketchy.
Also, have you attempted to connect your macbook to any other display since starting to have the issue?  A bad dongle (dp to vga adapter) isn't rare.  I have a bad one sitting on my desk at this very moment.
One last thing you can try, this works for some:
    Shut of the mac
Connect it to the smart board (i.e, connect the cables)
Turn on the mac and then close the lid
This *may* boot the computer on the external dispaly (smart board)
Open the lid before it comes to the login screen.
Hopefully one of these suggestions helps.

  • Vga output not working in lion

I upgraded to Lion yesterday and noticed that I could not longer use my Macbook Pro with a projector.  I've tried several different projectors (classrooms at the university), and none of them work.  When I plug the VGA cable into my adapter, the Macbook Pro display changes briefly to blue and then back to normal.  The projector display eventually goes to dark blue, indicating it doesn't detect a video input.
I'm using the same mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter that worked previously in Snow Leopard on these same projectors.  The only thing that's changed is Lion vs. Snow Leopard.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

This May be a VGA support issue:
I had similar issues with a brand new Mac Mini Server withLion. I thought I could save some money and use an existing monitor (SamsungSyncmaster). While the computer was in use the wireless keyboard, wirelessmouse and monitor operated OK.
However, as soon as the monitor went to sleep there was noway to reactivate the computer. I went through each device and scenario, without success, I even connected a wired keyboard and there was no response.
I reviewed the responses and discussions over the web, andtook a chance and changed my HDMI/VGA connection to a HDMI/DVI connection to anewer monitor that supports HDMI and DVI.
Problem solved. Although Apple sells the connector HDMI/VGA,you must be warned the results are undesirable.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • DVI video out suddenly not working.

That's basically it. I have a 23-inch Cinema HD Display at home and at the the office. Suddenly the video out is not working with either of them. The displays control panel lists the external display, so the system is detecting the connected display.
There is nothing wrong with the displays. I connected an old PowerBook and they light up fine. With my MBP, the power light lights, but nothing is displayed on the Screen.

there's a somewhat similar thread "external monitor stopped working" with no answers
my 17" Studio display works as 2nd mon on other computers
my dvi out does work with a vga monitor and adapter, of course :))
i'm using the dvi to adc adapter -- could this be involved somehow?
my laptop display goes blue when i plug in the external monitor as it should, but the 2nd monitor never wakes up, turns on, etc.

  • Mini-dvi to video does not work

I have the 13-inch white macbook purchased in 2008. I just bought a mini-dvi to video cord and tried hooking it up to my TV using RCA and S-video and neither work. When I plug the cord into my computer, the resolution on my computer changes and then when I plug it into my TV it does not appear on the TV. When I change the display resolution on my computer to the lowest option, I can see the display from the computer on the TV rapidly moving across the screen and it is extremely distorted and doesn't appear to have any color. I chose detect displays and this did not do anything. Am I doing something wrong? Why won't my computer image display on the TV?

I also have the same issue. SVideo / RCA adapter purchased from Fry's Electronics. Apple Brand. Worked the week I bought it, and after a couple of updates, stopped being reliable.
Now, after some trial and error, I can get it to work, its just painfully convoluted.
The trick for my system is to keep trying it, (re-seating the adapter at the mini-dvi connection) and eventually it works.
Iv found that It only works when it "latches" to the video adapter instantly.
Sometimes its 3 times. Sometimes its 15. Quite random.
Seeing as how I don't like watching movies on a 13" screen. I just have to be patient.
I have been searching/waiting for some kind of apple firmware, or video adapter update that adresses this, as I dont believe its anything more than a software bug.
Any useful info would be much appreciated.

  • Help! DVI to Video adapter not working!

    Hello,
I bought a brand new DVI to video adapter and it's not working. I plug it in and it shows the start-up screen, but it's split screen and it's in black and white. Then, it goes into the black and white lines, not showing what's coming out of the computer at all. I've tried doing this on three separate TV's and none work. Can anyone help?

Can you give us your video card specs and the link to the product you are using.
