DVI to VGA or DVI to Component?

I just purchased a new 26" LCD tv. I've notice whenever I connect anything to it via VGA (e.g: Macbook Pro, iMac, or my Xbox360) the colors are somewhat washed out, there's a great deal of pixilation, as well as poor black levels. Yet when I watch the same videos on the laptop/desktop screens...they look great. I'm secure it's not the TV, as watching movies on a dvd player look fine, as does using component cables with my Xbox. Does anyone know if I'd have better luck using a DVI to Component cable to run content from my Macs?

One would think that it would be best to use the VGA port. But logic doesn't always fit into all this stuff
You'd have to get a DVI to Component Adapter (I don't think they make a min-DVI one) and see. Only problem is you're still outputting from the same port on your Mac and that means either your TV can't handle the signal from the Mac's DVI port or your Mac can't output the signal well enough from the DVI and it's not going to help it any outputting from the same place and using a analog signal to boot.
But again. I've seen weirder things. I suppose you can try.

  • DVI to VGA or DVI to HDMI?

I've just purchased Sony Bravia HD tv and I have it connected it to my MBP (via DVI) to watch high def shows and movies. Right now I'm using a DVI to VGa cable, but I'd like to take advantage of the HDMI port on the tv to get a better picture. Anyone know if the difference will be noticable?

You might as well try the DVI/HDMI interface if you are unhappy with the VGA interface. You have nothing to lose by trying. It will be slightly better but I think Chris Y. is correct that the source of the pixelation you see is probably unrelated to the type of interface.
If you freeze the action, is the pixelation still present? That would for sure suggest the problem is with the source material rather than having much to do with other things that can cause pixelation.

  • DVI to VGA and DVI to Television

I have a MacBook PRO. Below is the profile for display. I would like to connect an external monitor and I would also like to connect my computer to Television to watch movies. Both my TV's are over 4 years old and have S-Video as well as RBG (Y/pb/ Pr) / RCA. Please advise the two different kind of adapters/cables that I need to buy to make both the functions work.

Based on your video card, you have an older MBP with a DVI out.
For the external monitor, you'd need the Apple DVI to VGA Display Adapter - one came as an included accessory with your MBP, but you can also purchase one from Apple, at a retail store or online using THIS LINK.
For the TVs, you'd need the Apple DVI to Video Adapter, which has both s-video and composite (single RCA-type jack with a yellow band) output. You can purchase one from Apple, at a retail store or online using THIS LINK.
Note that the DVI out is only video - for the audio, you'd need mini-stereo to RCA cable - you can find those at Radio Shack, Target, etc., or online.

  • DVI to VGA or DVI to HDMI for Sony Bravia

I have a 52" Bravia HDTV that i have hooked up to my Mac Pro (with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card) . I bought a DVI to VGA adapter since teh Bravia doesnt have a DVI port, but has a "PC" port. All my friends tell me to use "DVI to HDMI" better. What are the advantages? i am asking because the screen looks great with the VGA connection .I just watched several HD trailers for different movies on the Bravia and they look REALLY HD and clean. So is it really going to look even better ? or is there another advantage to using HDMI ? Thanks
a side question, when i restarted my Mac Pro that had the Bravia and the mac display hooked up , the display was blinking on startup (where it keeps flashing a light blue screen) until i restarted it again . What happened ?

The HDMI port can give sharper vertical edges, but some TVs don't work well with computers via HDMI. The only way to tell is to try it.

  • VGA or DVI to component

Has anyone actully tried one of these VGA (or DVI) to component converter boxes? How well do they work? Do you get much overscan or does the box compensate for that? I've seen here people talking about the converter boxes but I haven't seen someone say I have one.

i cant find a cable or convertor that does this at a reasonable cost.. keep me posted if you do!

  • Mini-dvi to vga to YPbPr

Hi. I have an Intel-based Macbook (mini-dvi) and I bought an LCD-TV which has a VGA and a Y/Pb/Pr input. I was planning on using my mini-dvi to vga adapter to connect my mac to my Trutech lcd-tv/monitor. My question is whether it is worth going through all this trouble. With which connection (VGA or Component Video in) will the quality of the image change significantly?
    thx

Actually, I bought it on Friday. I knew it was cheap quality because it is a no-name and it is from Target. I bought it for 200 $ so I didn't expect much (Will be used in my college dorm anyways).
    This is the one: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/ele/488030589.html
I just want to get the most out of it.
If you recommend me a better one for approx. 200$, I would bring the cheap one back in a second.

  • Why does a DVI or VGA look better than HDMI for 2nd Monitor

Why does a DVI or VGA connection for a program monitor look better than HDMI. I've tested this on several systems with CS5x and CS6. The full screen output from premiere definitely looks worse with HDMI.
I can often see visual differences with the Windows GUI as well, over sharpening of text and lines, harsh rendering of gradients. It looks like a VGA signal displayed on a television.
I've looked at the NVidia stetting and it appears to be set to 1920x1080 at 60hz either way, DVI or HDMI. On one Acer 20 inch monitor the was VGA, HDMI, Composite, Component, and Digital Tuner, but no DVI. The program monitor has always looked blah from the HDMI. So I recently switched the connection to a DVI to VGA adaptor, and now the video looks so much better.
    Any thoughts or explanations?

Just because the monitors accept a 1080P signal doesn't mean their native resolution is 1920x1080. At 20 inch they very likely can scale that signal down to the native resolution of the panel which may be 1600 x 900 or another resolution that is 16 x 9 resolution. That scaling can be done by the GPU or firmware on the Monitor depending on the video driver options and the firmware options. That scaling is also the most common cause to text and icon blurriness you are talking about. As an example there are Pro monitors that accept a 4K signal but scale it down to 2.5K or 2K on the actual panel. You might try going into your video card settings such as Nvidia control panel and look for the scaling options. Select GPU scaling and see if the preview is better. If that doesn't work select no scaling and see if it's better if the monitor firmware handles the scaling.

  • No video signal using mini dvi to vga adapter.

I just bought a macmini, the last generation. Separately I bought on the apple store a mini dvi to vga adapter because when I bought the macmini I forgot to buy that....once the adapter arrived I tried to turno on the mini, everything seems to be normal, the mini works, the audio signal is normal and after the startup it asks me to choose the language, but the screen says there's no INPUT SIGNAL. I tried another mini dvi to vga adapter, the vga wire works with my pc so I didn't try another one,I tried the reset of the mini,nothing....do I have to try with "miniport to vga" adapter or is there something else I can try?

I got my Mac Mini yesterday and I am having the exact same problem as you are having.
I've tried on two different TV's but it is just not sending a signal. Is it faulty?

  • No Apple Remote or Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adaptor included with new MacBooks

    Hi!
I just picked up a new (black) MacBook yesterday from the Apple Retail Store in Meadowhall (Sheffield). I was quite surprised to open the box and find that the Apple Remote and Mini-DVI to VGA adaptor cable are now optional items and no longer included in the package. Okay, they're not expensive (an extra £30.00 to add both of them), but I just thought I'd mention it to let potential customers know.
I have to say that I'm very pleased at the speed bump and the 250GB hard drive though (you can never have too much space). Also good to have 2GB RAM out of the box (rather than paying an extra £90.00 for the 2GB model). Excellent!

bford0001 - 15% restocking fee? Did you buy it from an Apple Retail store? I bought a black MacBook from them just under two weeks ago (a 2.2 with 160GB HD and 2GB RAM) and they let me take it back and walk out of the store without charging me anything!
One other thing I have noticed - why has the L2 cache dropped to 3MB from 4MB? I know the processor is more powerful, but doesn't that mean it would just about level out, because of the reduction? I noticed the same for the £1,299.00 MacBook Pro and that on the other two models, it's gone up to 6MB. Anyone know how this would change the performance?

  • Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter

I purchased a Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for my MacBook (early 2008).
When I plug the cable into my MacBook it works fine, I have to drag the browser from my macBook onto my LCD using the curser. But when I do this with iTunes and I want to watch a film or music video there is no sound. Does anyone have any ideas of how to solve this problem or if im using it right.
    Please help.

Ah. Okay. Well you need to output the sound from your MacBook to your TV. You need another cable to carry the audio. You can use an 1/8 mini audio to TOSLINK (if your TV supports optical audio input) or 1/8" to RCA audio (those red/white cables).

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Issues

    Hey guys,
My first ever post to the forums. I just recently bought my very first apple computer. It is a 2.4 ghz Macbook 13" and bought a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter so that I can connect it to my 46" Sharp AQUOS TV. I connect my laptop with the dvi to vga adapter plus another vga cable of course and all I get on the screen is my wallpaper but I can't see any of the icons on my tv screen, nothing.
Can anyone help me on this? Does this sound like a familiar problem?
    I would appreciate your help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dogan

    Hi DoDolom,
    First, welcome to Macintosh!
Secondly, it sounds to me like what's happened is that OS X has extended your desktop onto a second monitor. Plug in an external mouse and keyboard and then close the MacBook's lid. It will go to sleep. Use the external mouse/keyboard to wake it up and you should be running on just the external display.

  • Mini dvi to vga adapter doesn't fit Mac Book port

I bought a "mini dvi to vga" adapter at the local Apple store at the mall and it does not fit the mini DVI connection on my Mac Book. What is the correct mini dvi configuration or part number for the Mac Book Mini dvi port?

It may be. I threw the bag out so I can't check. I was in a hurry and thought I picked up the right adapter but guess not.
Thanks for your help. Know anyone that needs a mini vga to vga adapter?

  • Mini- DVI to VGA adapter Or is that, DVI to DVI?

I am having difficulty figuring out which adapter to purchase if I want to use my MacBook to make a Keynote or PowerPoint Presentation with an LCD projector.
Do I need the Mini- DVI to VGA adapter, or is it DVI to Video adapter, or DVI to DVI adapter? Good grief! I've made fabulous-looking slides and just want to take my computer to the lecture hall, connect it to their projector, and give my talk. How does one decide which cable to get, if I don't know for certain what kind of projector they are using?
Aren't all LCD projectors standardized this way?
    Thanks for the clarification.
    ~ john

As mentioned, VGA is much more common than DVI is on projectors, so the mini-DVI to VGA will certainly work more often than the mini-DVI to DVI will.
It costs $19USD, so I would get both and use the best option available to you when you get to the location and see what kind of projector they have.
You also may want to pack the VGA and a DVI cable just in case. You never know if the location will have one on hand, or if it gets misplaced just in time for your arrival.

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter M9320G/A on late09 mini

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter w/ extension cable

I would like to get a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for my macbook. Does anyone know how it would would if I used it with a VGA extension cable. Any experience will be helpful

Depends on how long the cable is, and if it was of sufficient quality for computer use. The higher resolutions require better quality and shorter cables. You may get some signal loss for long cables. A standard monitor cable that comes with a computer monitor should be fine, but what kind of length extension cable are you talking about?
