DVI to VGA  or S Video when connecting to a Samsung LN46a950 LCD TV

I have a first generation intel Mac mini. I just bought a Samsung LCD TV. I currently have my computer hooked up to the TV through the S-video jack via an adaptor. I have a optical audio out going to my receiver. Will I get a better picture if I get a DVI to VGA cable or does my s-video connection give me as good as I can get?
Thanks loads for your help.

Yes, you will get a better quality picture if you connect via VGA instead of S-video. While VGA isn't as good as it can get (it's analog, so a DVI or HDMI connection would be better if the TV has it), it's capable of delivering a much more crisp and color saturated image at higher resolutions than s-video.

  • My laptop won't let me play audio or video when connected to my tv

I have an HP Pavilion G61-429WM and it used to work just fine when connected to my tv. Then a couple of weeks ago it just wouldn't play any of my downloaded movies. I went on Itunes and it wouldn't play the music. Then, I went to youtube and it wouldn't even let the video play although the sound did come from the laptop.  Like I can surf the web and the prgrams and whatnot but whenever it comes to video and audio it kind of just freezes..Help??

    I got a solution
First check out your performance settings and if u dont know where to find it just right click on my computer and enter to propreties then click on performance and tools, then if the gamming and desktop aero system are 1.0 then you have three solutions.
    1) Install a new windows
    2) check out your computer driver and install tge latest version
    3) or simply you can download DRIVER PAC SOLUTION and install it then after installation is done you might wanna restart the system and check performance again then it should desplay NEW HARDWARE DETECT REFRESH NOW then click on refreah and the rating is gonna go up from1.0.to higher than 4.0.

  • Lagging problem when connected to a Samsung Central Station 23"

    Hi,
I bought myself a Macbook Air(Summer, 2011 Edition) about 3 months ago roughly,
and I also bought myself a Samsung Central Station 23" which works just as a thunderbolt or cinema display but much cheaper and much elegant.
It also sends audio signal as well as usb datas when connected to a pc or a mac.
Before buying this monitor, I searched for any history or experience regarding performance problem when hooked upto an external monitor the other users had,
and while some people say there are no such problems with new intel i core series which includes much advanced graphic core and much faster processor,
many people said they have experienced performance problems to some dregree as well.
Now that I seem to have this huge problem of lagging with my MBA when connected to Samsung Central Station,
I still have no idea why it is happening, nor how to fix the problem.
I use my Macbook Air connected to a Samsung Central Station 23" and it runs 1080P Full HD resoultion, which isn't that big deal to incur performance decline.
I shut my MBA screen when I use the external monitor, so there isn't much thing to interfere with the performance.
I don't know about other people who use an external monitor, but my central station monitor works on Full HD resolution only when i close my MBA screen or connect it as a dual screen. If the screen is left open, it runs with the same resolution as the macbook air.
when I start sensing decline in frame I always had my MBA open to lower the resolution which seemed to work fine again.
But these days, even when it's disconnected from the monitor it seems to have problem and the only way to bring it to the normal condition is to restart it.
when connected to the monitor It's even hard to open few tabs on Safari and play a web flash game.
It lags so hard I cannot even turn to other screen on mission control or swith to other browser tab without making it delay for a second.
I checked CPU and RAM resources when it started lagging, but almost 90% of the CPU resources was idle and more than 500MB of RAM was free.
After restarting the computer CPU remained the same, but more than 2G of RAM was now free.
Im guessing it has something to do with GPU performance but not sure how to fix the problem.
Do you think it's my Macbook Air's hardware problem or is it the monitor? or something else?

I have the same issue. Were you able to find a resolution for this issue?

  • Slow FPS, graphics and choppy video when connected to a Mini-DVI cable to external monitor on Macbook Mid2007 4GB RAM

    Hi,
I have a Mid-2007 Macbook white. I have upgraded its memory to 4GB. Snow Leopard was working great, and I said to myself maybe it's time to upgrade to Lion.
After the upgrade all was well. However, a big problem occurs when I plug in to the Mini-DVI display port with the HDMI adapter, to connect to my Sony LCD HDTV. The whole graphics and video slow down, everything is choppy. Quicktime and VLC video playback is strobe and choppy looks like very low Frame Rate. Cannot watch anything, not HD nor low resolutions. The entire computer is slow when the cable is connected.
    Things I tried:
*VGA adapter seems to work fine - it's the digital display output that probably causes that.
*Running it through a new user.
This never happened on Snow Leopard. i'm considering to go back. However, I am wondering if there is a way to fix this minor problem.

    Update:
We solved the problem. Weird solution but now it seems to work. I plugged a VGA adpater and played with the screen rsolutions to try and watch a movie well on my LCD screen. I changed the screen resolutions but I couldn't revert back to the default settings. Pressing "Detect Displays" didn't do anything.
Here is the interesting part: When I placed back the DVI-HDMI adapter, suddenly everything worked fine!!! There was no choppy videos, no low fps, works prefect.
Something weird is going on here, but I'm happy I managed to get the DVI to HDMI to work because I was about to removie Lion and bring back Snow Leopard.

  • Mini-DVI to DVI, DVI to VGA and No video on Samsung SyncMaster LCD

External monitor works fine on a PC with same adapter (minus the Mini-DVI to DVI). OSX recognizes the external monitor and even gives display options in system preferences, and the mouse moves off the main display into the extended display but external LCD sits in sleep mode, but must detect some sort of video signal because when i pull the cable i get the "No Video Detected" warning on the external monitor. Could OSX be sending a sleep signal to the external display? I checked all the Energy Saver prefs? Any other thoughts?

Apple's mini-DVI to DVI adapter DOES NOT pass analog VGA signals.
For some inexplicable reason, Apple chose to use a digital-only DVI-D
connector. The analog video signals (pins C1 thru C4 in the drawing
    below) are not connected.

The DDC channel and 'hot plug detect' signals are connected, so
the IMac and monitor can "see" each other -- but there's no path
    for the analog video.

  • Powerpoint wont play video when connected to projector

    Hi,
I gave a presentation last night on my MacBook Pro (2011), OS X Yosemite, and when I tried to connect the laptop to an external projector all of my videos stopped working!  I had a blank screen and audio only.  What happened? I had a VGA cord for the connection.

  • Ipod touch has lost LOADS of my videos when connected to my MacBook Pro

Ok this is a weird one, and it's happened twice now.
So I use two macs, my 27" iMac at work which runs snow leopard, and my MacBook Pro laptop that is running Tiger.
Now I connect both to my brand new iPod Touch, which is great and has all my videos ond music on.
Now I uploaded a ton of films / tv etc and when I went on holiday I took my laptop with me to use and I also use to charge up my ipod.
Now when I was charging in itunes on the laptop it showed all my old videos and music for some reason, not sure why  - but when I checked the iPod it had all my new stuff on.
So I charged it, added a new album from my laptop and thought all was fine. But it wasn't.
Now I have lost ALL the new music and videos I put on there, and it's even put the old films and tv back on there....How? Why?
Now when I click on the iPod touch it tells me under setings / about that I have 31 videos on there, but it's only showing 10. So they've somehoe gone and as I have them all on my work mac and I'm on holiday I can't get them back on....GRRRRRR!
This has happened once before but I've no idea why - can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks guys...it's so much of a pain.

    - You can only sync with one iTunes library. If you sync with a different library, the iPod will be erased and its contents replaced what is in the iTunes library of the attached computer. It appears that is what happened..
    - You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - You can "sync" music and videos from different ibraries by using the manual method specified here:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad

  • Why does my ipod touch only give me sound and no video when connected to tv

whenever I connect my ipod touch to my flat screen to play a movies or watch a music video saved on the ipod touch ... I get the audio .... sometimes it will show the video but most times its does not ... simply put ... Why? and how do i fix?

    cor-el,
Thank you for the help. I followed your instructions and it worked in Safe Mode. I went through my Add-ons and disabled them one at a time until I found the culprit.
Additional question: If I set up Sync and run it for my desktop and laptop, then turn my add-on back on, will it continue to interfere? Or only when it tries to re-sync? I'm asking because I love the add-on that causing the trouble and will have a hard time letting it go.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Iphone shows black & white photo's & video when connected to HD TV?

I bought the Apple composite A/V cables to connect my iphone 3GS to my HD TV. While both photo's and video do play on the TV, they are in black & white. Does anyone know why? Is there a setting in the iphone that allows color? I'm sure it's not a setting on my TV, as all other devices that I'm able to connect to the TV work in color, except the iphone. Any suggestions?

I know that on some TV's(Samsung as an example) not all of their component inputs will work properly with composite cables and will display in black & white unless the correct input is used. Try using a different input like the one labled number 1.

  • Will iPod screen also play video when connected to TV?

    would love to know! Thanks.

    Thanks Tom,
You're probably right, it will be best to have both cables. As you say the av cable is very portable and it's not that much more expensive to buy both.
Of course, at home, the iPod will not display movies as crisply as dvd's with any cable (given the iPod video encoding limitations), so again you just have to understand your desired uses.
I understand that the videos will never be DVD quality, and I am not buying an iPod because it now does video. I think it will be all for music and pictures mainly but for the odd video it will do the job of showing friends.

  • No mouse pointer when connected to TV Samsung led40/6500. Mouse works but doesn't show?

Just bought Mac Mini. Connected to Samsung 40/6500 ledtv. using mouse pad but no pointer seen. Finally found the resolution working, but not the right resolution. Should be 1920x1080 @ 60 hz via HDMI. Mac Mini's best is much different from this. How can I find the right resolution on my Mac Mini.

It actually works fine on my sons Lumatron cheap tv! But not on the Samsung led tv?
To start with I used an app on my Iphone to recieve the image from the Mac Mini and then try to find the right resolution on the MAC. Because every time I choose the wrong one the display went black. I could then still see the image on my phone and troubleshoot my way through...

  • Connecting MacBook to Samsung FullHD LCD TV (newbie)

    I've gone Mac.
After going through 4 faulty PC notebooks in 5 under 5 months I got a store credit and used it to put towards a macBook Model: (MB466X/A) http://www.apple.com/au/macbook/specs.html (it's on laybuy at the moment but getting it out in afew weeks)
I want to be prepared so I have a few questions...
Now what I need to know is how can I connect it to my SAMSUNG LCD TV Series 6 32inch Model:(LA32A650) http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/detail/spec.dogroup=television&type=televisio n&subtype=lcdtv&model_cd=LA32A650A1HXXY&fullspec=F for use in my lounge room.
I am confused by the Mac forums saying, I need all these cables just to connect it. Would anyone be able to assist me at all?
As I have never used a Mac before but was playing with one in the store and thought this is the way to go after so much disappointment with Windows based notebooks.
    many thanks in advance.

You will just need to pick up the correct adapted for your Macbook. If it is an aluminum model you will need the mini display port adapter. If it is the white model you will need the mini DVI adapter. To hook the computer up to your tv you will need to decide which port you will want to use (VGA or HDMI) then buy the correct cable to go from your tv to the adapter you purchased for the computer. Its a pretty simple setup you shouldn't have any issues.

  • DVI to VGA Adapter Trouble

I recently was able to figure out (I am not tech savvy) how to transfer video and audio from my Macbook to my TV with the DVI to VGA adapter. How to connect it is as far as my knowledge goes on the subject and now I have a problem. My computer froze during a video that was streaming and I had to reboot. Everything was still connected and after the restart the only image on my TV was (and still is) the desktop background when connected. It no longer transmits the video, nor does my computer images get large and fuzzy like it did before when connected either. Audio is unharmed. I understand I may have to get another cable but I don't understand why since it still transmits an image, just not all images. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like before the Mac was in mirror mode whereas now it is in extended desktop mode. If you go into System Preferences/Display there is a checkbox for turning mirroring on or off. Turn it on and things should go back to how they were before.

  • Mini-dvi to vga problems.

    Hello,
I recently bought a min-dvi to vga cable and tried to connect to my tv. The TV is relatively new and supports hd. However, when I click detect displays, the mac doesn't recognize the tv. The tv turns on for a split second and says 'no signal'. Then it goes of, and I have no second monitor. Can anyone help me?

If the TV has an HDMI connector (it should if it's a recent HDTV), you should use it instead of VGA. HDMI will keep the signal all digital from the computer to the screen. VGA is analog.
If your iMac is a model before the current 2009 model, you can get something like this to go from mini-DVI to HDMI.
[PTC Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter with 6ft HDMI Cable|http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001H0REVK/ref=s9subs_gw_s0_p23_t5?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=07SX5KQPE80BYX6 0XD8Z&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rdi=507846]
or this one if you have or want to get the HDMI cable separately
    [Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter|http://www.amazon.com/Mini-DVI-to-HDMI-Adapter/dp/B001PVUIL4/ref=sr16?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1242504557&sr=1-6]
(there are other listings on Amazon)
The iMac should properly recognize the HDTV over HDMI.
