DVI to Video problem

Hi everyone !
I've got a big problem using my MacMini with TV.
I bought the Apple DVI to Video converter, and connected my Philips cathodic TV to the Mac. But the TV only displays gray and deformed pictures. I tried all resolutions available, but nothing changed...
Two things are strange :
1) When I restart the computer, I can see the gray Apple with the tunring wheel very weel, but when the first starting screen appears the picure becomes deformed again.
2) I have no problem using my Powerbook and miniDVI to Video converter with this TV, the pictures are perfect.
Can it be the converter ? Thanks for your answers !
Powerbook G4 12" 1,5 GHz & MacMini G4 1,5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Since you have two computers at your disposal, I recommend you put them both on the same network and make a VNC connection between the two. Use the PowerBook as the VNC client and install a VNC server on the mini. By doing this, you will be able to remotely reflect the mini's desktop to the PowerBook and in this way from the PowerBook you can control the mini.
Once you have this working, what you want to do is go into the mini's Display Preferences (remotely from the PowerBook) and change the the resolution being sent by the mini to the Philips TV. Hopefully you will find a working resolution that gives you a stable image. Once you get the picture on the Philips where you want it, you can quit the VNC connection and the mini will now retain the resolution as you have set it.

I had the same problem and resolved it by changing the refresh rate on the TV display via System Preferences>Displays
I think I had to switch from 50mhertz to 60 mhertz or vice versa. Either way it fixed the problem.

  • Mini DVI-to-Video problems

OK, I have a dynex mini dvi to video cable with the s-video option or the standard yellow AV cable option. I have an older TV so I bought the yellow cable. Connected the cables to my television, turned mirroring on, and still it's not working. The screen looks like snow interference and it tracks up the screen repeatedly like a broken VHS tape would. The screen does respond when I open different windows, etc. (although completely unreadable). All the cables are tight and I have been messing around with screen resolution. It seems as though I am so close which is very frustrating, anyone have any idea what's going on?
I also tried this on multiple TV's and got the same result.

Thanks for the link to that program. It seems like it could be a possible solution, but the program is a bit buggy.
I tried SwitchResX out last night, and played with it for a while, but for whatever reason the custom settings I tried to add in SwitchResX (640 x 480 @ 60Hz refresh interlaced) didn't show up under the Apple Display preferences. SwitchResX control said it "Should be active" under availability, unfortunately after multiple reboots and retries it never showed up.
My Mac is now somehow in a state where it has trouble even recognizing the Dynex adapter (the screen will dim out and then back a few times detecting something is attached when I plug it in, but Display preferences won't show settings for an attached monitor). I'll try playing with SwitchResX a bit more and see if I can manipulate it into working, and I'll post instructions here if I see some success.

  • Macbook Mini-DVI to Video problems

    hello everyone,
i just got the mini-dvi to s-video cable. I connected it to my TV and the picture is fine but there is no sound from the TV, just the macbook. Its getting annoying bcuz my Apple remote is broken and it would be nice to get sound from TV so its easier to control. Any ideas out there pls. I want to enjoy my movies. Thanks

Right, you need to get a cable like this (see link) to plug into the headphone jack on the MB and the audio in on your TV. S-Video doesn't carry audio.

  • Problem using the DVI to Video adapter

I am using a MacBook Pro. I am using the DVI to Video cable to connect my MBP to the TV. It was working fine and I was watching movies and videos. Suddenly I am having problem and its not working.
I hooked up the DVI to Video adaptor on the PC side . Black and white signal which is blurred/blocked/and modes across the screen. I tried playing with refresh settings, resolutions, etc but nothing is happening
Even in the display I am not able to see the NTSC
settings anymore. When it was working before the display changes automatically once i connect the adapter. But now it refresh but the display is not changing. currenly my display is set to 1440 * 900.
any idea why the display is not working, is it a driver issue.

Have you played with the "Mirror Displays" option in the arrangement tab?

Which suggests no. I have heard from an Apple Store "genius" that it does.
Both are n=1, so I'd suggest a call to the Apple Store sales line (even if you don't order it that way).

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Video Problem

This year at Randolph-Macon College we replaced the Math lab Emac computers with IMac G5 Intel machines. The laboratory has an NEC model MT1050 projector with a manufacturer’s date of August 2002. We can not seem to get rid of ever present scan lines. We can slow them down and speed them up by adjusting resolution and refresh rates, but nothing will remove them. We are connecting the IMac to the projector via the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. It is specifically designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), and the adapter connects to the Mini-DVI port of the computer and the VGA end of the adapter to an external VGA monitor or projector.
Troubleshooting the problem we have swapped IMac Intel computers with no luck, but we still have to use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. When we hook the projector to a Intel Mac Book Pro, we have to use a different adapter, but then it works perfectly. In fact, everything we try using other adapters works fine, it’s just when we use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter that we experience the video problem.
Has anyone experienced this problem and if so, have you been able to remedy it?
iMac (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't have much to suggest, except to ask if you can try with a different mini-DVI to VGA adapter. (i.e. do you have more than one on hand to make sure yours isn't just defective?) Make sure it is firmly seated into the iMac.
I use the same adapter to provide an extended desktop on an old CRT monitor and the display is great.

  • Macbook + mini-DVI to video adapter problems!

    Hi,
My roommate and I both have Macbooks - I got mine in June '06, it's one of the older black 80 gb models and hers is a white 120 gb that she got in August '07. We bought a mini-DVI to video adapter so we could watch DVDs and video files on our TV, but have been having some trouble with it lately. At first, it worked perfectly with her computer, but in the past few weeks has been malfunctioning - when she plugs it in, the default background shows up on the TV screen but nothing else, any windows she has open only show up on the TV if she drags them to the right on her screen until she can't see them on her computer anymore, so we're unable to watch anything fullscreen. Any tips on how to fix this?
Also, the adapter has never worked with my computer - any time I plug mine in, my computer display becomes enlarged and slightly distorted, and on the TV screen is distorted by horizontal lines that move up and down the screen. Any ideas here?
Thanks so much for the help!

    Hi cbeth,
    welcome to macbook forum.
For your friend macbook, try to press F7 back and forth to switch between mirror and expanded mode.
Try to update your macbook hardware firmware and software using software updater and repair permission after that...application/utilities/disk utility/repair permission.
Also reset your PRAM and PMU.
Open your friend system preference / display and try to compare and set yours similar to hers, including resolution, color depth, refresh rate.
    Good Luck.

  • Display problems using mini-dvi to video adapter

I recently purchased the mini-dvi to video adapter for my powerbook to use my TV as a monitor and to play pictures and videos from the laptop to the TV. I am getting a full color display on the TV, but it's only the screen saver. None of my files, text, or any other desktop folders or menus appear when I open them up on the laptop. The only screen that opens is the display preferences when I open that up, but it's a different set of preferences than what's in my computer's display preferences, as it's header is "NTSC/PAL". But other than that 1 menu, nothing is appearing but the screen saver.

OK, I discovered that I didn't know what I was doing. With the Mini-DVI to video adapter, you need to use an S-Video cable that plugs into an S-video jack on the TV, and then you need a separate cable to plug into the audio out jack on the MacBook to plug into the TV.
I think you could also use an S-video to RCA component cable if you have a TV with component video input, but I couldn't get that to work so I went to the s-video to s-video cable.

  • MacBook connecting to Mini-DVI to Video Adapter problems- HELP!!!

I just purchased the mini-dvi to video adapter. Immediately upon connecting the device, it makes the connect sound, followed immediately by the disconnect sound, accompanied with a flashing black screen. This repeats until I remove the adapter. I just updated my graphics driver, but that didn't help. I'm running windows XP on a macbook purchased in august 2007. please help!

Does the adapter work if you're in OS X? If so, you may get better help over in the Boot Camp forum here:

  • Problem with apple mini dvi to video adapter cable

I recently bought an apple mini dvi to video adapter cable and all that it would display on my television screen was black and white colors. The quality of the screen seemed to be okay but it was hard to tell since i did not have any color. Is there something that i can do to fix this problem

Your probably not doing anything wrong. There are thousands of users with Similar issues and it seems to be with many different adapters.
We have Mini DP to VGA (3 different brands) and they all fail most of the time. This seems more prevalent with LCD Projectors. I've tested some (50+) with VGA Monitor (HP) and they all worked, LCD Projector (Epson, Hitachi, and Sanyo) and they all fail, DLP Projector (Sanyo) and one worked.
My Apple Mini DP to DVi works most of the time. My Mini DP to HDMI (Generic non Apple) works every time.
The general consensus is that Apple broke something in the OS around 10.6.4 or 10.6.5 and its not yet fixed. As we are a school we have logged a case with the EDU Support group so will see what happens.

  • Problem with DVI to video adapter on MBP 2.2 (using FInal Cut Pro)

When I plug an Apple  DVI to video (composite and S video) adapter into the DVI socket the screen reduces its resolution and the higher screen resolutions are no longer available from system preferences. This happens on both my MBPros so is this a fault with the adapter or what ...?   The reason I'm doing this is to have dual display for Final Cut Pro 7 although this behaviour happens withourt FCP running , which is why I ask in this section.

Setting it to FireWire Basic didn't work. It still only played thru the first few frames, then came back with the same message- that there were dropped frames detected (not bad sectors, as I reported earlier). One other thing I noticed: after the failed capture attempt, it resets the In point to the same time code as the Out point.
I'm going to try capturing by just clicking Play, then clicking the Capture Now button, and see if that works.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter Questions

I'm in the processing of producing an instructional video using an Intel Core Duo iMac and iMovie. This content will be distributed primarily via broadcast over cable TV. Considering this, I'd like to be able to edit and view my dv footage on a TV monitor as I work.
I was told by the Apple Store person that the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6314001/wo/jY18n ncCp3Nx2tYjws52iCaPkH1/1.0.21.1.0.8.25.7.11.2.3) will enable me to
    1. Mirror my desktop to simultaneously show me what my iMovie edits will look like on a TV; and
    2. Enable me to edit in iMovie using the TV as my desktop.
Am I understanding the capabilities of the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter correctly?
    Regarding Cables
    1. I currently use an RCA composite cable to view dv footage from my camcorder directly on the TV. Is this the same cable I'd attach to the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter?
    2. The DVD recorder/player my TV signal is routed through has an s-video port. Is there a benefit to using an s-video connection in addition to/or instead of the RCA connections?
Thanks for helping me understand this setup scenario!

    Ditto to Karsten's post:
"Mirroring" a Mac's output to a TV, or plugging in an adaptor to provide a display on a Mac's screen and simultaneously on a TV ruins the Mac's display while this is happening by lowering its resolution. Ugghhh! (..I've tried this several times, in order to get a 'TV' signal out, showing the Mac's desktop, but it's hopeless..)
Karsten's method is the best - output to camcorder via the normal FireWire cable, and plug a TV or monitor into the camcorder's A/V Out socket!
[..Note, though, that Matti has pointed out that - what was it..? - during editing, some updating of the TV-thro-camcorder display doesn't work correctly. I can't remember exactly what the problem was, and I don't see it mentioned on Matti's Bugs Page, but there was some slight oddity. Nevertheless, this is still the best way of viewing on a TV or monitor..]

  • Mini-DVI to Video Adapter

Well being a new mac users (and loving the change greatly) I decided to use my brand new black macbook to it's fullest extent and make my own Keynote presentation. Although the final result is great I need to know if I can actually get it projected up onto our big screen.
After about 5 mins of browsing the UK's apple shop I found the solution to my problems
    Link
But then realised it doesn't state any support for the macbook and one of the comments says:
'Very unclear advertising regarding machine compatability. Apparently 2 types of 'mini-dvi' - both called 'mini-dvi'. This is only compatable with the most recent version of the 12" Powerbook. '
Which is leaving me very nervy about just ordering the product without confermation of it's compatibility.
    Can anyone help?

Apple store links are temporary unless you have the permanent so I won't post it... but if you go to the UK store and click on Displays under Mac Accessories- the Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter that is on that page is the one that you want. It works for my MacBook, it should work for your MacBook

The write up on the UK store may not have been updated like it is on the US Store but the part should be M9319G/A
