DVI with No HDMI

I have a older TV that has only DVI. Additionally, my stereo receiver does not have a optical in. So, short of buying a new TV is there any others workarounds to using the Apple TV ?

Current AppleTV only has HDMI out for video.
DVI should work in theory BUT may not or cause side effects such as muting audio over optical accroding to some posters.
If the TV has DVI it must support HDCP or AppleTV2 will refuse to play protected content and may refuse to connect at all.
Short of getting a new TV, an AV receiver that has HDMI in and can handle the audio your options are limited.
There are 3rd party 'adapters' out there that tend to be expensive andf might offer analogue out - if they did not downscale HD content they would probably be contravening HDMI regulations as HDCP equipped devices should not output HD analogue.

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt
    Thanks

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

  • HDMI to DVI with Audio for Input to an Old Sony TV

Just got an Apple TV box for Christmas. Apple TV output is HDMI and I have an old Sony Plasma TV that DO NOT have HDMI but it has DVI with Audio (L & R) inputs.  I can buy a HDMI to DVI converter cable for about $10 but how do I get the sound from the Apple TV to my TV?  Thank you much

    You have two solutions -
Solution One - the way i did it was with a digital auido to RCA convertor - try here for an example http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Optical-Coaxial-Toslink-Converter/dp/B0074JZ8ZW
    or
    solution two
a Kanex ATV PRo - converts HDMI to VGA and 3.5mm Audio
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H9139VC/A/kanex-atv-pro-hdmi-to-vga-adapter-wi th-audio-support
Both work but there is a cost and a bit of work.

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • Picture is blurry when i connect my screen (HP) with thunderbolt - HDMI

Hi I just bought a new macbook pro 13 inch. I am connecting it to my screen HP 2159m but I cannot get the same picture quality as with my old PC. It is dark and blurry in comparence. I have set it with 1080p 60hz wich is the highest resolution I can find in the settings their is no option 1920x1080 in the setting list. I called apple support but they couldn't fix the problem. I am connecting with thunderbolt - HDMI to my macbook. My PC was connected with DVI.

I now solved my issue by buying a DVI -mini display port adapter and connecting through my DVI cable to the monitor. But APPLE ...this is not good! you should resolve this issue so it is possible to connect with a HDMI cable.

  • DVI-D To HDMI Adapter

I would like to get a second monitor for my computer but my computer only has a DVI-D/VGA, HDMI, and a Display Port. My first monitor is plugged into the DVI-D/VGA port and the second monitor (Hp W2082a) only has a VGA and DVI-D port. So I need a DVI-D to HDMI adapter but I am worried that it will cause performance issues.  Thank You for Your Help

so the situation is somewhat confusing, as I my self have never successfully hooked up a non HDCP MBP to an HDTV. Maybe they have some tips or suggestions.
That's extremely strange, since I've never seen it not work. I've connected a PowerBook G3 (S-video), PowerBook G4 and MacBook Pro (DVI > HDMI) to my HDTV, and it always works. I do not own any Blu-Ray disks or movies from the iTunes Music Store, but I have played back iTunes TV shows and clips, and commercial DVDs, as well as podcasts, QuickTime Player, Flash video on web pages, etc. And of course the Mac OS X desktop itself or any application. It all works through my HDTV with any Mac I've ever tried spanning about 9 years of Mac laptop models.
There do seem to be some posts in the forum about odd issues with specific brands. Mine's a Toshiba 720p/1080i that's less than a year old.

  • IMac with 2 HDMI monitors?

My iMac mid 2011 (27 inch) refuses to work with 2 HDMI monitors using thunderbolt to HDMI adapters.
I tested the adapters, they work fine (on their own).
If I replace one of the cables with a VGA adapter both monitors work.
So, how do I get it to work the way I want without resorting to this workaround?

    Not sure, see below.
You could hook one monitor up using a mini-diplayport to HDMI adapter.
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
    Hook the other via USB.
    USB 2.0 to HDMI® Display Adapter w/ Audio (1920 x 1080)
USB 2.0 to HDMI Audio Video 1080P Adapter for Windows and Macbook
Newer Technology USB to DVI / HDMI / VGA HD Video Display Adapter
    And lastly there's this:
    Matrox DualHead2Go
After looking at the descripton of that Apogee MDPHD2X I am not sure whther it distributes one video input to two HDMI's producing a mirrored display or fakes the EDID information like the Matrox to make your computer think it is one lage extended display.  More research is needed to verify that.

  • Msi video card n240gt and n9800gt problems with output HDMI

    Hello to all
I have a problem I just bought a new Video card because I needed HDMI output. The previous card I have is a BFG Ge Force 8800GT 512 DDR2 running @ 1920x1080p 60Hz which works perfectly the only downside is it does not have HDMI out with 5.1. Now i installed the n240GT 512 DDR5 and tried watching BD ripped to the HDD and playing them back  all i get now it jerking lagging bad also and have horizontal red and green lines scattered across the screen.Which i did not have with my 8800GT card thinking  its  a bad card so i bought another card from another dealer this time its a MSI  N9800GT 1gig DDR3 and still the same problem.I Checked the resolution and its set to 1920x1080P refresh at 60Hz,i also changed the  Hz to 24Hz and it cleaned up the lines but not all and picture still  jerky picture. I have a MSI K9N NEO V3 Motherboard and all drivers updated current Bios. l used a DVI cable 40ft long with my Ge Force 8800GT and every thing worked fine, once I installed the new MSI Video cards N240gt and N9800GT I have the above problems and using a 50FT HDMI cable. I have a Samsung PN50A550 with 3 HDMI inputs 1 has my BluRay player hooked up with HDMI running at 1920x1080P at 60Hz and crystal clear picture no problems, input 2 has my HD Bell receiver running at same specs as input 1 no problems I tried the other HDMI inputs from the Samsung TV  from the HDMI out from the card same thing. It has to be the cards that can`t support the TV what else can it be if not the MSI cards. Please respond ASAP Thanks Thumpalong

You may want to borrow and test with another PSU.
We always recommend Corsair and Seasonic
I can't find anything on Topower other than that opinion piece of linked... getting frustrated. Most of the time I can find detailed info on most psu's not this time, so best to borrow and test.
Assuming of course that the older VGA's worked fine.

  • I have an older Hitachi widescreen 1080p  TV that has a DVI input, no HDMI input.  Is there an adapter and if so will it still work?

I have an older Hitachi widescreen 1080p  TV that has a DVI input, no HDMI input.  Is there an adapter and if so will it still work?

As HDMI is the only supported method there will no guarantee with any converter.
DVI doesn't tranfer audio so you would have to either go through optical to connect speakers, or use a DAC in connection with analogue speakers.
Also, unless the TV is HDCP compliant you will be unable to play protected content (ie iTunes, Netflix)

how do I connect to a TV with a HDMI input? Can I use a USB graphics adapter?

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion All-In-One MS235 Desktop Computer. Based on the specs, your computer doesn't appear to have a video output of any kind. A USB-to-video adapter such as the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39 will be required to connect your HDTV to your computer.

  • I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV?

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • Can you hook up your iPod Touch 4th generation with an HDMI cable to your HDTV and play videos from your iPod to the TV?

I'm trying to find out if I can hook up my iPod touch 4th gen. iOS 5.0.1 to my HDTV with an HDMI cable and have it mirror what I do on the iPod Touch like mirroring videos for example. I need to find out and if so, how?

You can only output content to your TV if the App you are using supports the TV Out functionality. Mirroring is not supported on the iPod Touch.
If you still want to output content from your iPod to your TV, make sure you have the right cables as described here.
