Dvorak as the default keyboard

I just bought a new Macbook and I chose the Dvorak layout with the Qwerty-apple key option as my default during the initial setup.
I found that this allowed me to use Dvorak in the password input menus, but then I also saw that some keys didn't translate completely. For example, CommandShift/ should be command question mark for accessing help, but it is recognized as command slash.
The question I'm asking is, is there a way for me to pull up the initial setup program again without reinstalling my system again? (I have alot of data and programs that I don't want to replace.) I don't mind going through the setup disk again as long as I don't have to erase my data.
Thanks

Hi, I have a similar problem. I just replaced my French AZERTY keyboard with a standard English QWERTY keyboard on my iBook, and then I changed my preferences in System Preferences - Personal - International - Input Menu to choose an English keyboard. The result is that the QWERTY keyboard is recognized in all my applications except at startup. It seems that the original French AZERTY keyboard is the default at startup when I enter my password at the user login prompt. After I've logged-in, the keyboard becomes QWERTY. Any suggestions on how to activate QWERTY at startup without re-initializing my system?

I want to open a discussion about keyboard layout on iPAD´s, including the best one iPAD4. How one can design such sofisticated technical item for diverse work/activity, includes mainly for note writings and meetings, but the writing procedure is so slow becuase of the keyboard layout. It is really crucial to solve this problem in order to avoid developing additional keyboard from third-party developers. This function has to be integrated, namely: TO HAVE A COMPLETE SEETING OF LETTERS AND NUMBERS IN THE DEFAULT KEYBOARD LAYOUT, FOR EFFICIENT WRITINGS.

I bought a case with a bluetooth connected keyboard. Much easier to use than the on-screen keyboard if you do a lot of typing. You can use many/most computer wireless keyboards with the iPad.

  • Can I change the default keyboard shortcuts?

    Hi,
I was wondering if it was possible to change some of the default keyboard shortcuts. Some of the actions I use quite frequently have 4-button shortcuts that require a lot more dexterity than I have and I was hoping I can change them to something simple, like 2-keys or 3 at the most. Is this doable?
    Thanks

Many can be changed. System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts.

  • I have just downloaded an alternative keyboard (Fast Keyboard)How do I get my Ipad2 to use it instead of the default keyboard, please?

I have just downloaded an alternative keyboard (Fast Keyboard).
How do I get my Ipad2 to use it instead of the default keyboard, please?
    Thanks for your help

    First, please don't shout.
    Second, don't post personal information.
Third, restore, if iTunes will let you.  Everything except the password will be restored.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  Be forewarned that it takes a long time.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Dvorak and the Apple Keyboard

Apple makes it easy to switch keyboard layouts, but not when it comes to the physical layout. 'Bout the only way to do that is by finding stickers with the letters and symbols on them to stick on the keys. And that's where I'm running into difficulties. Where do you find the **** things? I remember sheets of rub-on letters and symbols people like wargame designers would use for mock ups, but I haven't seen them around recently. Would anybody know what I'm talking about, and where I might find something like that?
Nothing like a keycap please. Such things are over produced and over priced. Not only that, for the Apple Keyboard they're also over sized. It gets confusing typing dvorak when the layout is qwerty.
    Thanks for listening.

Guess what I went and did? Had an idea and googled the phrase "keyboard stickers" Got pretty much the same results you two did.
The skins you found links to I aint gonna touch. I'm not about to pay $35.00 to fugly my keyboard. There are bonafide keyboard stickers out there however. I did find keyboard stickers at Amazon. I'll be checking out some of the local computer stores where I live to see if they have anything. to see if they have anything. My thanks for the assist.

  • Make dvorak the default keyboard

    Hello
I have recently switched to the Dvorak keyboard layout, but I also do some typing in Chinese (using Mac's built in Traditional Chinese Input Source) which uses the Qwerty layout. I'm having trouble using the Qwerty layout now that I'm relatively fluent with the Dvorak layout, so is it possible to change the Chinese Input Source to use the Dvorak layout?
Using Mac 10.4.8 on Intel Mac.
    Thanks!

    is it possible to
change the Chinese Input Source to use the Dvorak
    layout?
Not the IM that comes with OS X. You need to install QIM instead.

  • [Gnome 3] how to set the default keyboard for GDM

    Hello again,
second problem.  I use a UK keyboard and some of the passwords for my accounts use symbols which aren't the same on a US keyboard. I cant find the setting to default GDM to UK layout. Any ideas?
    David

When I upgrade my system, my keyboard lost the character map (I use the brazil-abnt2 map), and gdm lost the "keyboard button".
So I went to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and write (the xorg lost my old keyboard map, because of the upgrade):
    Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Keyboard0"
        Driver      "kbd"
        Option "CoreKeyboard"
            Option      "XkbRules"        "xorg"
            Option      "XkbModel"        "abnt2"
            Option      "XkbLayout"       "br"
            Option      "XkbVariant"      "abnt2"
        Option "XkbOptions" "abnt2"
    EndSection
That works for my terminal, but inside the X (Gnome, LXDE, etc) the map was lost. So I do in a terminal:
    $ setxkbmap br
And I have the keyboar map set to brazil-abnt2 again.
I think if you change the keyboard map (in xorg) from abnt to gb, and do a:
    $ setkbmap gb
    it could work.

  • Flash MX: default keyboard layout

My apologies if this topic had a better place to be posted.
I'm using Flash MX 2004 7.2. I use both English and Japanese keyboard layouts in my OS.
Every time I open Flash MX 2004, the default keyboard layout turns to Japanese. This only happens in Flash MX - in Dreamweaver MX and Fireworks MX, the keyboard layout defaults to English no problem.
Has anyone encountered this issue before?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    TIA

It sounds like it could be a Flash problem. You might want to also ask your question in the support forums run by the maker of the program:
    http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/index.cfm?forumid=15
You also might want to ask your question in a more appropriate Apple forum, like "Using Mac OS X Tiger." This one is for "Universal Access" questions.

  • Default Keyboard input change in using roaming Profile on different Win 7

We found a strange problem on default Keyboard setting.
We are using roaming profiles for all users.
One of our users is using two Windows 7. One Windows 7 is VDI for working out of office and another Win 7 is her local PC.
She is only using Two keyboard input: Chinese Traditional English and Chinese Traditional Pinyin.
Whenever she had used the Windows 7 VDI, when she comes back to office and use her local PC, the default Keyboard input will automatically change to Chinese Traditional Pinyin.
The user said she had not changed any default keyboard input in the VDI of local PC.
Is there anything we can do for this issue?

  • [solved] Gnome default keyboard layout

    Hi guys,
Can anybody please explain me why the following command works but the corresponding .conf entry does not?
    setxkbmap -layout "us,pl,de" -option "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
    [orschiro@thinkpad ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-keyboard-layout.conf
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "keyboard"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XKBMODEL" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us,pl"
    Option "XkbVariant" "altgr-intl,"
    Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
    EndSection
When using the .conf entry simply nothing happens.
    Regards
    EDIT
I was able to identify my problem. See the following:
The above .conf does not work since Gnome seems to fetch a default US keyboard layout from somewhere which I cannot figure out where it is. Without any invocation from my side Gnome assumes this US keyboard. However, I do not want to us the default US keyboard layout but the altgr-intl option.
    Screenshot
So as a workaround I have to run setxkbmap -layout us -variant altgr-intl after Gnome had started. But I would like to understand how Gnome assigns the default keyboard layouts.
Last edited by orschiro (2013-06-26 07:57:29)

I still do not understand where the default keyboard layout is taken from. However, I use a workaround and created a file .keyboard in my home directory which is launched after startup of Gnome and changes the layouts according to my setkxbmap settings.
    More information.

  • Reset default keyboard in IOS 8

I've lost the word choice horizontal bar across the top of the keyboard when typing a new message .  I had previously installed a new keyboard thru the app store on iTunes but didn't like it and then deleted it.  The keyboard I'm using now is the English QWERTY.  How do I reset the default keyboard.  I am using 8.1.1 on my iPhone 5S.

  • Default keyboard at start-up

Hi, I recently changed my French keyboard (AZERTY) to a standard English keyboard (QWERTY) on my iBook. I changed the keyboard in my preferences. However, at start-up, the default keyboard for my password is the AZERTY keyboard; after I am logged-in, the QWERTY keyboard is used by the system. How do I change the default keyboard to QWERTY without re-installing Tiger?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In System Preferences/Account/Login Options, please enable "Show input menu in login window". Then logout.
In the login window (not in the menu bar but in the login window itself), now you see a small input menu. Select US (or British?) and login. I hope next time you login the default is back to US keyborad layout. If it didn't work, then remove French keyboard layout from the menu.

  • Default keyboard layout

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me.
I need to set the default keyboard to irish for user accounts. I can't seem to do it! when a user logs in they default to british. once logged in they can change it forevermore, but only on that machine. if they go to another one it defaults back to british.
    HELP!

Similar problem here. After migrating from xserve 10.4.10 to an xserve 10.5.4 the default keyboard layout is U.S. instead of what the users had before (mostly german-swiss).
It would be very nice, if someone could give a hint of how to manipulate com.apple.systempreferences.plist to set a default keyboard layout.
    Thanks in advance.
