DVR Optical Out to Mac Mini Optical In - How do I...

I have USB powered speakers connected to my Mac. I'm trying to connect a Dish HD DVR via the optical ports.
In User Preferences I can see the input scale fluctuating so the optical connection appears to be complete but I can't output the audio signal to my speakers (they work fine with iTunes etc.).
Surely I don't need additional software to make this work...
Any advice? Anyone else have a similar setup?

Actually, you do. You'll need Rogue Amoeba's LinIn to allow the Mac to passthrough audio from another source:

Just bought a Mac Mini lion server how do i make a backup disk for lion?

I believe you will need a USB drive and can download and  install something called Lion Recovery Disk Assistant from below.

Also read the article from below which I believe will encourage your desire to do the backup.

  • No Sound when using Digital out with Mac Mini

The Digital out on my mac mini has become seriously unreliable. The sound slider is all the way up but locked, no movement is possible. The Toslink cable shows light, and when plugged into another device the amplifier receives sound.
This is an intermittent problem, for awhile rebooting would make the sound come back, however this has stopped working.
unplug the toslink and the built in speaker plays fine. Sound slider becomes movable.
If you sent the sound slider to 50% then plug the toslink back in it jumps to 100% and all controls ar grayed out and 0 sound.
any troubleshooting tips would be most appreciated as this is my primary audio video device.

Not likely. Think about this: The output is simply a digital stream of bits. Volume does not apply to digital bits... The first place where you can adjust volume will be in an outboard DAC, a preamp or an integrated receiver.
For a great DAC, check out ps audio "digital link III", retails currently for around $695, B stock may be avail for around 550. There is a cheaper quality DAC available from Cambridge Audio "Digital Magic", but it is not in the same league as the PS Audio or other higher cost DACs (such as Benchmark Media's DAC1).
For a fantastic audio system that takes digital audio from a Mac Mini, I have a PS Audio DL III taking Toslink from the Mini and feeding RCA analog into a Zpre from Parasound with a couple of Zamp (zone amps) from Parasound going into very nice bookshelf speakers and in ceiling speakers.
The volume is controlled by the Zpre amp ...As it must be

  • No Audio Out on Mac Mini

After months of flawless operation, my Mac Mini suddenly won't play sound through the external speakers. I have checked all the connections and restarted the machine. Nothing. In the sound control panel, there is only the built-in audio option for output - no other option to choose there. Any ideas?

Go to Apple.com/downloads and go Top Apple Downloads. Install the Mac OSX Update Combo 10.5.8 and it should fix it. I just solved this problem myself. Hope it works out well for you! =]

  • Lost headphone out in mac mini

    Hi,
I've been happily using my mac mini for the last year, mostly for Garage band and music related things.
The other day I plugged in my hi-fi into the line out, and since then the headphone jack mostly doesn't work (it gives a series of clicks if I plug headphones in), and will stop anything playing music from working (I get a beachball until I unplug the headphones). I can get it to work briefly by putting the mac to sleep and waking it, but the sound is distorted and only comes from one channel.
I tried plugging in an SB extigy I had lying around, and it worked for about 5 minutes, but since then has also been silent.
I have zapped the pram, but to no avail.
    Any idea's?
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2007), how sync iPhone 5?

I have a Mac Mini (Mid 2007) and cannot sync my iPhone 5 as Itunes 7 requires OSX 10.6.8 or later which I cannot install as the Mac Mini is too old. Can anyone advise what my optiosn are  other than iCloud?

.....requires OSX 10.6.8 or later which I cannot install as the Mac Mini is too old.
    Yours facts make no sense.
A MacMini 2.1 (mid 2007) can be upgraded to either 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or 10.7 (Lion).
The latest version of iTunes is 10.7 not 7. It also works with either SL or Lion.
You would need at least 10.7 (Lion) in order to use iCloud.
You would have to phone Apple at 1-800-My-Apple to buy an authorization to download Lion, but you would also need to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed to have the App Store.

  • Mac Mini SL Server - how to set it up a basestation

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini Server (Snow Leopard Server), boss man just purchased a MacBook air and now needs connection to the server and the rest of the network for file servers (the mac mini server) and printers.
I know as a desktop you can click "Share Internet" in the Network sharing tab, but that's gone under SL server.
    Any suggestions

To access the server with the MBA press COMMAND-K or select Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu.  He will need a user account set up for him on the server that is configured as a Sharing Only account.  He then logs into that account once connected to the server (does not log into the Guest account.)  On the server File Sharing should be enabled.  It can be configured to provide whatever access to the server is desired.  The server's connected drives or folders to which he would have access will need to be shared.  Select a drive or folder, Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the box labeled "Shared" in the top section of the window.
For internet access I assume you have a router between the cable/DSL modem and the server.  If the router has wireless then he can connect wirelessly while in the office.
Connection when away from the office is another problem, and one with which I have no experience.  Access is usually done via a VPN connection.  Someone else will have to guide you through this particular maze.

  • ITunes downloads fast on old Mac mini but slow on brand new Macbook Pro on the same WiFi network?

    Hi all,
I have an old Mac mini that's from around 2008 and runs on Snow Leopard. I also have a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display that's running Mountain Lion. Both running iTunes 10.6.3.
I never noticed anything wrong with my MBP's connection speed until last night when I downloaded a free TV episode from iTunes. The download speed varied between 20KB/s and 40KB/s and it took me 7 to 8 hours to download a single episode. I checked my internet connection but there was nothing wrong with it, SpeedTest.net told me I had a download speed of 94MB/s and upload speed of 80MB/s, it was only iTunes that was unbearably slow.
Today I was browsing iTunes again and was planning to buy some movies, but again it took forever for the trailers to download. So I fired up my Mac mini just to see if it would be just as slow. Turned out my Mac mini could download the same trailers from iTunes at a much higher speed than my MBP (around 3MB/s on the ones I tested).
So what gives? They are on the same Wifi network provided by an Airport Extreme, and although my iPhone and iPad are also connected to it, no one else is doing any heavy duty downloading.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Mac Mini (intel) freezes after Security Update

On May 16th I downloaded and installed ´Security Update 2006-003 (Intel)´ on my Mac Mini. Since then I have been unable to have any other session with it than in "safe boot" mode.
Then, on May 18th, during one of these "safe" sessions, I also downloaded and tried to install ´Mac Mini SMC Firmware Update´, hoping that this could be the resolve. The initial behaviour changed slightly, but that was all.
When I now look for upgrades, I get the message that the latter is available for download, so it has obviously not been activated.
I have been keeping the ´box´on for days in case there was some process going on in the background that would resolve it, but in vain.
As something appears to have entered the machine with these updates, are there any way to reverse them and throw them out?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks for your reply!
To adress your questions in sequence:
1 - After powering up, the grey Apple screen emerges, and shortly after the rotating wheel of bars starts going. Then the screen changes to blue, and the shield showing "Starting Mac OS X" has its blue ribbon rotating up towards 100%. Now, here things may change from time to time, sometimes it reaches 100%, sometimes not. But the next phase is the same; a shift to a dull blue-gray screen with nothing on it, which remains until I eventually give in and presses the power off button for some seconds. I even left it like this this for a day, to make sure nothing was going on behind, but in vain.
2 - I am not sure about your meaning "Since the computer operates normally in Safe mode....", I did not normally operate it in safe mode, it became a necessity after the download I mentioned. Tried to look in the suggested FAQ, but did not find anything I found relevant. (But then -being new to Macs - maybe I did just not understand it?)
3 - The Security update was the last of 7 updates that was downloaded from the Apple Support pages, the others being: QuickTime v7.1, Front Row Update v1.1.2, iDVD Update v.6.0.2, iWeb Update v1.1, iPhoto Update v6.0.3 and iMovie HD Update 6.0.2. As I said, I am new to the Apple structure, so I do not know if these softwares are regarded as third-party or not.
There is, however, as far as I can see, nothing that indicates that any type of panic with the core is declared during start-up, it just becomes incommunicado!
4 - Obviously, the most attractive option I can see is to follow your advices here. But the mentioning of specific versions of CD in conjunction with re-installatin alerts me somewhat. What I got with my Mac Mini are two CDs; ´Mac OS X Install Disc 1´ (Labelled Mac mini) and ´Mac OS X Install Disc 2´. Does this means that I am unable to do Archiving?
Finally, I have some other topics (Basically with QuickTime) with this Mac Mini as well, that was the reason I started looking for updates in the first place, that will become important again when I overcome this blow. But as I am looking around in the forums I become increasingly aware that there are lots of people experiencing similar problems to myself (Poor functioning of Airport, problems using flat-screens as monitor), and now this one. I mean to see a pattern, and that is that there are significant differences in functionallity between OS X for the "normal" processor and the one for Intel. How deep goes this difference? There is obviously softwares for OS X that cannot run on this machine, and how do I keep them out?
Hoping for some more helpful hints
    Best Regards,
    Ole

  • Late 2009 Mac Mini EFI 2.1 Firmware update not needed/already factory installed?

Here has been my issue of trying to figure out if Mac Mini can handle (and fully use) 8GB of RAM with my current EFI version.
I want to upgrade to 8GB on a LATE 2009 Mac Mini that currently has Boot ROM MM31.00AD.B00 and was told to update with EFI Firmware update 2.1 but it does not install saying "This update is not needed on this machine".
I found various contradicting posts saying that I need my Boot ROM to be MM31.0081.B06 or my machine won't utilize the 8GB fully
and will slow down in performance and/or crash after the Apple recommended 4GB.
But here's what I found interesting. Some users have mentioned that the Late 2009 Mac Mini's shipped with updated firmware and don't need this update but could not find a concrete answer as to yes it did ship with it or not.
Apple doesn't even list a Late 2009 Mac Mini as needing a Firmware update in this list of Firmware updates:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 . Should I just assume that my machine shipped with said update and is capeable of the 8GB? I use this for Logic Pro 9 as a somewhat portable workstation that I can take with me so maxing out the RAM would be ideal for me.
Any help or clarification would be greatly apprishiated,
    Nelson

Actually a Late 2009 can take 8GB of RAM and only the Early 2009 needs the EFI update.

  • Mac mini (Late 2012): Dual- or Quad-Core?

I'm upgrading from a MacBook (2006) and - as a frequent iPad user - am thinking of just getting a Mac mini. I'm not sure though as wether to get the i5 dual-core or i7 quad-core version.
What I'll be using it for (none of these on a professional level, prosumer at most ;)):
Photo editing (iPhoto, thinking of switching to Aperture)
Web development (Coda, Espresso, local test server)
    Designing (Sketch 2)
    Full-HD video editing
    Web, office, social media, ...
Can I expect a signifcant performance boost at these tasks from the quad-core model or will the differences be barely noticable (also considering most of these applications will be running simultaneously)?
I'll be maxing out RAM from a third party vendor in both cases, HDD capacity is not important and I'm not going to upgrade to SSD or Fusion Drive.
What do you think? Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks for your insights! My inital goal was being cost-efficient; Fusion Drive is only an option on the quad-core model thus making it 1080 Euros were I live. That's almost an entire new Mac mini which I could buy in 2-3 years. I don't mind CPU intensive tasks taking longer (e.g. rendering final movie) as long as the actual "creative process" runs smoothly (e.g. cutting the movie).
As you both said finding out how/if apps take advantage of multiple cores is not that easy. I guess I'll have a closer look at all the benchmark tests and reviews that will be showing up in the coming weeks.
I think Fusion Drive on a dual-core might boost performance more than just going quad-core, unfortunately this is not an option for the lower end model. Also I want to wait a little to see if Fusion Drive is proprietary Apple hardware or just implemented software-wise (which would mean I could fix a broken drive myself after warranty has expired).
By the way, any guesses on Black Friday sale options (as far as I could find out the Mac mini wasn't included last year)?

No, this HD will not fit inside your Mini!
These are the spec's off the HD inside the Mini:
    SATA 2.5 inch
The 3.5 inch HD you mentioned will not fit inside the mini because it is just to big, it really need to be a 2.5 inch drive. Also the HD you mentioned has a ATA connection, but you can only put a S-ATA (Serial-ATA) HD inside the Intel Mini!
You better go with a external HD if you want to have much more space. The 2.5 inch HD's are only available up to 200 GB. With a external HD you will get much more GB's for less money!
