DVR/STB remote signal Handling

So I was told yesterday that all the Verizon FIOS motorola products operate with the same set of signals. There are no identifiers in the IR signal (for your conveience).  My problem is that I have a whole house setup with an IR relay system  as I would like to be able to switch between the dvr box and stb in any room to watch the one that is not being used, or to easily setup recordings on the DVR, then switch the the STB to view something else.    Since I have an IR relay system which is transferring from whichever room I am in to the boxes I end up controlling both of them at the same time via either remote, while only viewing one of the boxes. This is how I accidentally ordered movies on a STB that no one was watching while selecting some alternate content on my DVR box).
Are there no products or settings in the IR signal that can be adjusted to make the signal unique?  I can only figure a few solutions.  Would a Cable Card operate off the same remote control signals?  My only other solution was to use a universal remote and create a set of signals/commands to uniquely identify each box independently, send the signal to my PC first, process it with Eventghost and rebroadcast out the signal depending upon the box it is meant for, sending the signal directly to that individual box.
Ideas/Solutions?

There is no way to make the FiOS signals unique (addressed to) a specific STB.  A cable card solution would use a different device than a Verizon STB, so this would solve your issue.  I'm not sure how you can can create a unique set of signals/command with a universal remote.  I have the Harmony 650 (which is a pretty advance model) and just looked at the programming capabilities.  You can teach it IR commands, but there doesn't seem to be any way to add a unique identifier or modify an existing non-unique IR signal.
The only solution I see is to use a different receiver function with a cable card.
P.S. It would be great if you could set an IR address for a given STB and set a remote to that same address (like DirecTV I recall), but that's unlikely to ever happen.  The STB software might be able to implement this function, but with millions of remotes in the field that can't be updated via software, it would be hard to do, and I don't know what motivation Verizon would have to do it.  The STB would have to be smart enough to recognize the old remotes and the new news one with the addressable function -- complex, but possible.  And the new remotes would have to be developed and made available.

  • DVR/STB/Remote issues - Help Needed

    New to Verizon FIOS (Installed about 2 weeks ago).  Have a few issues. Any help is appreciated
    1) When im on the Home Media DVR and i fast forward through a program, when i stop or hit play, an extremely loud beep that lasts for 1-3 seconds comes from the speakers.  How do i get this to stop, what is causing it, etc?
    2) When i fast forward from one of the STB (regular HD box), if i hit FF once, it fast forwards pretty slow, if i hit it again, it goes somewhat faster.  The problem is.  When i hit it that 2nd time, it seems that 70-80% of the time, it jumps me back to an early portion of the program.  I.E.  Was watching the 2 hour episode of "24", was one hour and 20 min in, got to commercials, i hit FF twice and it jumped me back to 23 minutes in.  Tried again at next commercial break and it jumped me back to 11 minutes in.  What is the deal here?  How do i fix it?
    3) Are there only 2 fast forward speeds on STB?  I came from Brighthouse that had 4 speeds, im a little disappointed with only 2 speeds.  Can anyone verify?
    4) The remotes seem to take 2 seconds or so to register when performing any function other than changing channels.  When i hit FF or REW, DVR or Last, it seems to take a few seconds to kick in.  Is this a known issue, or possibly my box or remotes?
    Thanks for any and all help

    Sorry the ff speeds are the same. On the main MR-DVR there are 3 ff speeds, where the remote STB has 2 ff speeds. I think they did that because how the remote system works, it has slower responses being remote. But with the update you will not need to worry about the ff, because you will not get the hub error. I was one of the first people to get the update and I have not seen the hub error yet.
    As far as a time frame I don't believe there is any thing public about it, I think the only thing they have said is it is going to be rolled out per market, and one market a week. But nothing on the order of the markets.

  • DVR/STB Troubleshooting

    I have been having some issues with my service or DVR since the new guide/firmware update last year.
    The first issue is that an average of 50% of my DVR recordings will have a glitch in them:
    Jogging forward or fast forward causes the program to end and return to the recording menu.
    Not channel specific or time specific; could be any recording.
    Steps taken to resolve this issue:
    Auto fix STB issues under In Home Agent - no change.
    Auto fix DVR issues under In Home Agent - no change.
    Power cycling STB - no change.
    Called into support and they sent out a replacement DVR - issue seemed to be resolved for around a month but reoccurred.
    The above process was repeated with the new DVR/STB with no change.
    I have also tried turning Program Chaptering On/Off and the problem still occurs regardless of this setting. One thing that I have noticed is that during the affected recordings the information bar will often disappear completely or have the incorrect recording time (IE when playing a 30 minute recording and pressing Info button the program will show 10:00/1:30:00 or 10:00/0:00:00 as if the DVR does not know how long the recording is actually). The jog forward or fast forward causing the program to end usually occurs after 10 minutes of record time. This issue is very annoying as it defeats part of the purpose of the DVR and being able to skip through the program.
    The second issue that I am having is intermittent issues with what seems like signal quality and delays changing channels:
    Turning the DVR on and changing channels usually results in anywhere from a 30 sec to 2 minute delay (DVR stays on the selected channel or goes to a black screen until the DVR processes the channel change and goes to the selected channel).
    Seems to occur when changing from a local channel to a premium or HD channel or vice versa (3 to the HD 503 or any channel to 70 or 76).
    At times the signal seems to drop out and I get a lot of audio freezing and some artifacting in the picture.
    The channel change/audio skip or freeze usually occur once or twice an hour.
    Steps taken to resolve this issue:
    I did a search and found that some users had success changing or turning off the SD override feature, I have tried Off, 480i, 480p and Stretched - no impact on channel change delay or audio/video freezing.
    Auto fix STB/DVR with In Home Agent - no change.
    These issues are very frustrating and hard to pin down from a diagnostic standpoint. Each time I call into support when the issue is occurring the Menu Diagnostics or STB/DVR reset throws a red herring in that the problem seems solved until the next day when the problems start again or I have a DVR full of recordings that I cannot fast forward through. No offense but I am tried of going through Level 1 phone support and running through the book resolutions only to solve the problem temporarily. If anyone can shed some more advanced light on this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Edit for formatting.

    What you are describing in both scenarios is a signal disruption. Please unscrew the coax cord from both ends (from the DVR and from the wall). Make sure the tips are good and straight. Screw both back on. If you are still having troubles, then try using a different coax cord all together. If you are still having troubles, it might be a problem with the wall jack or the main splitter. For further assistance with those, please send me a private message.

  • How to enable second HD DVR for remote access?

    I easily got my first HD DVR setup for remote access and it worked perfetly for 1 day, then it stopped working.  After 2 hours on the phone with tech support, we got it to work again.  However, we were unable to get my second DVR setup.  He said that I could only have one DVR setup for remote access, is that true?  If not, any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Are you speaking of Remote Access from the Web?  ...or from a mobile phone?
    For Web Access it is absolutely NOT TRUE!
    I have TWO DVRs.  I can access both remotely from the web and schedule or delete recordings.
    The tech MAY have been speaking of (or confused about) the MULTI-ROOM capability that the DVR's have.
    Only one of the DVRs can be (and is) a Home Media (or Multi-Room) DVR, and therefore can share recordings with my other NON-DVR STB and communicates with any computer on my home network for PC-based Audio, Vieo and Image files, as well as connecting to the certain Internet video streaming sites.
    The other DVR is a standalone machine is this regard, but regardless, it still has remote access to control it from the Web.
    (I do not know anything about the Remote Access from a mobile phone capability, since I do have a Verizon Wireless contract.  THAT Remote Access may indeed be limited to just a single DVR.)

  • Does the DVR/STB have to be on the LAN for In-Home Agent to work?

    I'm a brand new user and am trying to learn the the new features that Fios brings to the party.  When my install was done I asked that the wireless feature be disabled on the router (I have a good wired network for my PCs and they were all connected to the supplied router).  All of my services work (TV, Ph, Internet) but I just noticed that when I go to In-Home Agent, the only selectable option is that for Internet.  I have a sneaky suspicion that the DVR/STB are controlled over the network.
    Can I connect the DVR to my wired network (Ethernet connection) and get the In-Home Agent functionality back?

    Verizon boxes communicate with the LAN via MoCA.  This is done over the coaxial cable.  If you have guide information then that is working properly.  Youy don't need wireless and the RJ-45 on the back of the STB is not active, so "hooking up" to your wired network would do no good.

  • Acquired DVR, STB. and Router from Apartment cleanout; Return?

    I am trying to do the right thing but poor customer service is not allowing me. I do IT work and received a DVR, STB, and Router from an apartment cleanout from a property owner. I am uncertain if the boxes are paid off or what, but rather than accept stolen property or flip them, I want to contact Verizon and have a return put out on the equipment. Hey maybe I'll get a credit or a few months of movies or something. But I certainly am not spending another minute sitting on hold to do this. I could not get through over 45 minutes yesterday. If I call and specify that I want to buy new service though, I get right through- only to be redirected anyways. Funny how it works. I love my FIOS service, always have, but to call them for anything requires taking a half day off of work. So, with that said- does anyone have contact info for equipment returns? Pittsburgh/Monroeville PA area. Again, if it's going to cost me anything, screw them. I will throw the stuff away as it should have been in the first place. If the equipment was paid for, it would be nice to have it activated to my account and no longer pay rental fees for my STB and DVR.
    Message Edited by betteroff on 08-14-2009 06:47 AM

    Don't know who to contact, but the video equipment is never considered paid off and remains forever Verizon property (that's how they make money on them).  After a year I belive Verizon doesn't require the return of the router.  They will not activate any STB without it being in their inventory and charging you a monthly fee.

  • Multiroom DVR STB Keeps Resetting

    For the past 36 hours or so (maybe longer), the only thing that works on my MR-DVR STB (500gb motorola version) are tv channels. Menu, DVR, guide and everything else all nonfunctional. The STB acknowledges the command, but does not do anyting. The STB does not display the time when powered off.
    Every 15 or 20 minutes (guess, havent measured). it reboots itself. On boot, it displays an error:
    Please Re-Insert CableCard
    I am not using a cable card. AFter displaying the message it boots up and displays TV, but again, none of the advanced features work.
    I have tried resetting the MR-DVR from a separate STB. This fails with an error saying to try again later (tried many times).
    I have tried resetting via in home agent. The first 5 times I used the app it did not even acknowledge I had TV service. When I finally got it to recognize that, it failed saying I had a problem it could not fix.
    I have tried resetting via verizon website, but it says that it cannot reach my STB.
    I refuse to pull the plug on the unit since the last 2 times I have done that it resulted in the DVR losing its pairing with my external drive (forced reformatting) and wiping 2TB worth of recordings.
    I suspect that a recent update to the STB has not worked properly and it is stuck in a continual loop of trying of trying to apply it/fix itself.
    Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas?

  • DVR STB Not Accessible on Web

    For the past several months, I have not been able to access my DVR STB online.  I used to do it all the time for programming, etc.  Now no matter what I do i get the message that my STB is not responding.  I gave up trying months ago, but I really want this functionality back.  But honestly, I don't want to spend extended periods of time trying to work with telephone support.
    Have others resolved this issue?
    What can I do to fix this problem???
    Thanks.

  • Help networking a Security System DVR for remote viewing

    Hey,
    I am trying to network my Security System DVR for remote viewing but cannot seem to get it working. I have read some post on this site as well as many others and followed instructions to the T but to no avail.
    Here's what I've got:
    Linksys WRT54G2 V1 connected to a modem.
    My DVR has 3 settings for networking:
    -PPPOE
    -Static
    -DHCP
    On DHCP, The DVR automatically sets these settings:
    IP Address: 192.168.1.100
    Subnet:  255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    and then the DNS is the same as the one on the "status" area of the router settings...
    Port: 10000-10020
    I set up port forwarding for 192.168.1.100 for port 10000-10020 selecting "both"
    If I pull up the "DHCP Clients Table" it shows the above IP Address but with no name....and the MAC address is something like ee:ee:ee:d4:03:5f.
    I have tried to change the DVR to Static and do everything manually but thats not working either.
    I created a Dynamic DNS with goddns.org but the DVR seems to have its own one built in that you cannot change. (at the bottom of the network settings it says something like "URL: 123484984.goddns.org----Status:  OK."  But when I try to type that in the address bar of IE it goes no where.)
    I hope someone can tell me why its not working.... It was working when we first got everything set up...then it stopped. then I messed with it and got it working but didn't know what I did.  Now its broken again and I don't know what to do.
    -Ian
    PS.  When I am connected to the router via LAN cable and I type the internal IP Address assigned to the DVR by the DHCP (192.168.1.100:10000) it brings up the DVR menu perfectly.  But when I try to log into it from a different location...with the external IP address...thats when I have trouble.  I do not think my external IP has changed since I got this router set up.
     Any help would be awesome.

    Hmmm... Did that and I can't seem to get it working still. Whats weird is that as long as I am connected to the router...I can access it through the internal IP address.... (if using DHCP its 192.168.1.100:10000 and if using static its 192.168.1.99:10000)
    Those both work when set up on DHCP for the first and Static for the second.  But as soon as I type the external IP address with the port it doesn't work.  Its like there is a firewall OR the port forwarding is not working.  But everything on the port forwarding page looks good... Its enabled, set on Both, correct port range... 10000-10020...
    Any Ideas?

  • Signal Handling by JVM : a probable bug

    I am facing the following problem. when i kill a running java code by (CTRL C SIGINT), then the sub processes created by the parent java program using "exec" call didn't get terminated. I ran the code on Solaris machine. This OS supports cascading termination meaning 'if a parent is dead then all the childs get terminated recursively". But i guess JVM calls its signal handler and didn't follow the rule of cascading termination. I THINK IT IS A BUG. can some one acknowledge/correct me on this issue

    I really don't think so.
    On unix boxes one can 'fork'. A fork creates a sub process (not a process.) Killing a sub process might or might not kill child sub processes.
    Runtime.exec() produces a process, not a sub process. So I would never expect that killing the parent would kill the other process.
    This would suggest that exiting the process would also kill the exec() process. There is a similar analog in perl. On unix it allows for fork and system/exec calls. An 'exec' terminates the perl script immediately. Using the same from the above, it would be useless since it would also immediately terminate the process just started with 'exec'.

  • 64-bit sigaction() Signal Handler for aio_write()

    I'm having trouble using a sigaction() specified signal handler when built as a 64 bit executable (-xarch=v9).
    The siginfo_t argument gets passed to the signal handler just fine. The problem is with the si_value.sival_ptr member. The other members (sig, type, pid ) are all okay.
    When built for 32-bits everything works fine.
    When built for 64-bits all I get is the high 32-bits of the sival_ptr, the low 32-bits are always 0.
    The signal is being generated as a result of a call to aoi_write().
    Please help - I'm in a hurry and I can't seem to find the answer.
    I can do a work-around using sival_int (it's in union with sival_ptr) and indexing a table for an address, but that's a hassle, while the pointer method is clean.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Bruce.

    Be careful that the program is built at compile time
    with the correct 64-bit library and not inadvertantly
    with a 32-bit version. The fact that the failure is
    a seg-fault and dbx can't resolve the symbol make the
    system lib a suspect and the problem a 32 bit vs.
    64 bit version.

  • Unix Signal Handling in Oracle Apps

    I have a number of questions regarding Signal Handling
    on Unix platforms within Oracle client code. I would like
    to ensure that my signal handling requirements do not clash with
    those of Oracle within an application.
    1. Does the Database client code register any Unix signal
    handling routines within a user application?
    2. If it does, which signals does it handle?
    3. What is the scope of these handler routines, i.e. when are
    they registered and when do
    they become de-registered?
    4. When registered, do these handler routines attempt to pass
    signals on to previously registered
    handlers (i.e. do previously registered handlers get chained)?
    5. When they are de-registered do they attempt to re-instate any
    previously registered signal handlers?
    thank you in advance for your help,

    This can certainly be done, assuming you have sufficient hardware/storage resources.
    Each instance will need to have a separate Unix account (e.g. applvis, appldev etc).

  • [SOLVED] fglrx(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler

    Hello!
    I'm new to Arch so please forgive me if I'm asking about something obvious.
    After spending many hours on reading and comprehension of Arch philosophy I finally dared to install Arch 2007.08-02 (Don't Panic) on my computer Fortunately I was prepared for text-mode configuration, but obviously not prepared enough... My first major problem is with the X server. I have followed strictly the instructions from the wiki and installed xorg and catalyst drivers afterwards (for Radeon X800 Pro). Now probably something is wrong with my xorg.conf, which you can see below, but there's also a bit more sophisticated problem causing this type of message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    (II) fglrx(0): Shutdown CMMQS
    (EE) fglrx(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler

    I couldn't find a solution either on this board and on the web as well, so I dare to ask for a little tip what to do to solve this

    Hello quad3d@work Thanks for the interest, but I've already solved this problem. I think it was something with my xorg.conf file, because when I made some changes to it, suddenly all started to work. If You are still interested in the output of the above command, well, here it is

  • OCCI & Signal Handling

    Hello,
    Before calling any OCCI function my signal handling (ie for SIGTERM) works, however, after calling OCCI environment/connection my signal handling no longer works. I believe the OCCI version is 9.2.0.6.0. Does anyone have an example of using signals with OCCI? It seems OCCI is 'stealing' my signals! Below is the basic test program.
    Thankyou in advance!
    Ross.
    The problem area: (c++)
    oracle::occi::Environment *env;
    oracle::occi::Connection *conn;
    oracle::occi::Statement *stmt;
    oracle::occi::ResultSet *rset;
    ::signal(SIGINT, signal_handle);
    ::signal(SIGTERM, signal_handle);
    ::signal(SIGPIPE, sigpipe_handle);
    cout << "Attempting to connect to server" << endl;
    try
    env = oracle::occi::Environment::createEnvironment (oracle::occi::Environment::DEFAULT);
    conn = env->createConnection ("usr", "pswd", "db");
    cout << "Connection Estabolished OK" << endl;
    string sqlStmt = "SELECT I_STATUS FROM K_INC";
    stmt = conn->createStatement (sqlStmt);
    rset = stmt->executeQuery ();
    while (rset->next ())
    cout << "Result!" << rset->getString(1) << endl;
    stmt->closeResultSet (rset);
    conn->terminateStatement (stmt);
    catch(oracle::occi::SQLException ex)
    cout<<"Exception thrown for displayAllRows"<<endl;
    cout<<"Error number: "<< ex.getErrorCode() << endl;
    cout<<ex.getMessage() << endl;
    cout << "We have a problem!" << endl;
    }

    hi Ross,
    I think there is no problem of signal stealing . I am able to use the signal handling before the connection, after the connection and even after insertion of rows into the table.
    I implicitly raised a signal in all the above three cases and also explicitly from another process using kill -15 <process ID >, and the signal handler seems to work fine.
    the code is attached below , see if it helps.
    thanks
    varun
    #include <iostream>
    #include <occi.h>
    #include<csignal>
    using namespace oracle::occi;

    env = Environment::createEnvironment (Environment::DEFAULT);
    conn = env->createConnection (user, passwd, db);
    ~occidml ()
    env->terminateConnection (conn);
    Environment::terminateEnvironment (env);
    * Inserting a row into the table.
    void insertRow ()
    string sqlStmt = "INSERT INTO varun VALUES (111, 'ASHOK')";
    stmt = conn->createStatement (sqlStmt);
    try{
    stmt->executeUpdate ();
    cout << "insert - Success" << endl;
    }catch(SQLException ex)
    cout<<"Exception thrown for insertRow"<<endl;
    cout<<"Error number: "<< ex.getErrorCode() << endl;
    cout<<ex.getMessage() << endl;
    conn->terminateStatement (stmt);
    void term(int sig)
    cout << "handling signal no." << sig << endl;
    i=i+1;
    int main (void)
    string user = "SCOTT";
    string passwd = "TIGER";
    string db = "";
    signal(SIGTERM,term); // register a SIGTERM handler
    while(i==1){}
    printf("Before Connection\n");
    occidml *demo = new occidml (user, passwd, db);
    while (i==2){}
    printf("After Connection\n");
    cout << "Inserting a record into the table author_tab " <<endl;
    demo->insertRow ();
    while(i==3){}
    delete(demo);
    printf("Complete");

  • JVM Signal Handling on NT and HP-Unix

    Hi
    I'm trying to catch various JVM shutdown signals in my application so that the application can do some clean-up before shutting down. Here is the code that i've written...
    sun.misc.SignalHandler jvmSignalHandler = new sun.misc.SignalHandler()
    public void handle(sun.misc.Signal sig)
    // Do some cleanup
    // Call handler on interrupt signal (CTRL-C)
    sun.misc.Signal.handle(new sun.misc.Signal("INT"), jvmSignalHandler);
    // Call handler on terminate signal
    sun.misc.Signal.handle(new sun.misc.Signal("TERM"), jvmSignalHandler);
    // Call handler on abort signal
    sun.misc.Signal.handle(new sun.misc.Signal("ABRT"), jvmSignalHandler);
    If i run this process on NT in a dos box, the applicatin behaves fine by responding to all these signals...
    e.g. If i press CTRL-C (INT), or i close the dos box (TERM), or i shutdown NT (ABRT).
    However on UP-Unix, i tried kill -2 (TERM), kill -6 (ABRT) and kill -15 (INT)... Out of these, only kill -6 (ABRT) works, while the others just "kill" the application and there is no clean-up. Can anyone help if i need to use any other codes on HP-Unix, or do i need to catch any other signals in my application.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Kashif

    Hope the following info(from HP-UX $man kill) is useful to you.
    Signal Names and Numbers
    The following table describes a few of the more common signals that
    can be useful from a terminal. For a complete list and a full
    description, see the header file <signal.h> and the manual entry
    signal(5).
    signum signame Name Description
    0 SIGNULL Null Check access to pid
    1 SIGHUP Hangup Terminate; can be trapped
    2 SIGINT Interrupt Terminate; can be trapped
    3 SIGQUIT Quit Terminate with core dump; can be trapped
    9 SIGKILL Kill Forced termination; cannot be trapped
    15 SIGTERM Terminate Terminate; can be trapped
    24 SIGSTOP Stop Pause the process; cannot be trapped
    25 SIGTSTP Terminal stop Pause the process; can be trapped
    26 SIGCONT Continue Run a stopped process
    BTW, do you have JavaDoc for sun.misc.Signal class in hand? I havn't. I'm not sure the name-rule for signals between HP-UX and Windows is same or not.
