DVR to iMac G5

I've recently been trying to get my DVR to hook up to the iMac without having to use a pass through or analog to Digital converter. From some of the other posts that I've read this should be possible using the firewire port on the back of the DVR. My questions are is this possible before I go out buying software and such and is there anything else that I need to know about before I jump into this. Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with Tivo but if it has a firewire port then you most likely could use AVCVideoCap and firewire to do it.

  • Replace DVR-K05PE (iMac 20-inch 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (MA200LL))

    Hi all,
i need to replace the internal superdrive Pioneer DVR-K05PE with new one, but it's hard to find it in the net.
Can someone tell me if theres other drive compatible with my iMac 20-inch 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (MA200LL).
    Thanks

I had a similar problem with my G4 iMac. I ended up just leaving the dead drive in the computer and picking up an external LaCie CD/DVD burner. The model I bought is no longer available (if you're interested in seeing the specs, it's here: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-16x-LightScribe-FireWire-300978U/dp/B000FGJVF4 ) but I've had no problems with it whatsoever. Even after almost 3 years of heavy use, it is still going strong.

Put the DVD back in your Windows system and make sure the disk is finalized.  Then it should be readable on your Mac.

  • VCR to iMac to DVR disc??

I have a bunch of old VHS tapes I'd like to convert to DVR media. Is there a way to hook a VHS machine to my iMac G5 so that I could then burn the tapes' contents onto a DVR?

You need a device that plugs into USB. You connect the VCR to the device using S-Video (if available) or the standard (yellow) RCA connector, and the audio using the red/white RCA connectors. Then you run software that records what's playing on the VCR in real-time and stores it in the file format of your choice. You can also connect the device to live TV and watch on your computer screen (without recording anything).
I have this one from Daystar Technology, and it's one of the less expensive options. It comes with recording software. However, I mainly use it to watch TV on my iMac's screen; actually, I watch the output from my TiVo on my computer screen.

Similar (and better known) products are available from Miglia and Elgato, but I don't have experience with them.

  • IMac DVR

    Hey all,
I'm building a new media room and I plan to pick up a new 27" iMac. I have Directv DVR's throughout the house, and I am wondering if there is any way I could hook one up to the iMac so it could double as a TV.
    Thanks!

Do the DVRs provide DisplayPort video out put? If they do not, then you likely would not be happy with the 720p resolution that you get with US$150 converters.

  • Imac G5/PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-K04L - suddenly spitting DVDs?  Help!

    Hello,
I have looked at the other threads on this and nothing really matches this:
    1. It used to work about month ago.
    2. CDs are ok.
    3. DVDs go in, about 10 secs, come back out.
    4. Same DVDs work fine on my PowerBook.
I've tried resetting PRAM in case that worked.
    Any ideas gratefully received.
Bought in May 2005 so well out of warranty.
    Many thanks for your help,

  • How to connect iMAC thunderbolt port to a cable TV set top box?

I am moving to a house that will have combination TV-phone-Internet services delivered via cable (Optimum is the provider).  I understand that with my new iMac which has a "thunderbolt" port that I can use the iMac as a tv monitor and DVR (recorder) and watch live TV or recorded TV.  I think it is possible to record  TV shows either on the iMac's hard drive or the Optimum DVR.  Beyond that, I get confused because I do not understand the details of RCA cables, coaxial cables, HDMI connectors, etc.  Apple does not provide support for set top boxes (I called Apple), and Optimum does not provide support for Macs (I called them too). Since Apple is the party advertising the capability of watching TV on a Mac, I would think the burden is more on them to explain how that works, and maybe they have done so on their web sites, but I cannot find it so far.  I can understand that the cable company does not want to tell people how to bypass the need for their DVR equipment.  Before I go out and hire a consultant for a few hundred dollars to explain it, I was hoping I might find online some tips on how to set up a system at home.  No luck so far.
Am I correct in assuming that wireless connections are NOT an option because a TV signal has too much bandwidth to work wirelessly?  (I do have a wireless router already.)
If so and if I am using wires to connect the iMac, am I correct to think I want to use the thunderbolt port for best results?
If so, what next?  What exactly is the adapter or cable I need and how do I plug it into the set top box?  There are several people in the household, and so I would want the flat screen TV monitor to work normally at times rather than only use the iMac.  Does that require several set top boxes?   I would think that this would be an issue for many people, and it seems to me that this forum would be an ideal place to get help.  So far the people I have spoken with say "well it depends on what you want to do and what your equipment is and for that you have to go ask ___________[someone else]"

I do not understand what Apple TV is.  I have TV already.  When I look up "Apple TV" on the Apple website I see that is has been redesigned to be small in size but big in entertainment.  Since I did not know what it was BEFORE it was redesigned, knowing that is has been redesigned does not help me understand it.  Now it is smaller?  So it was too big before?  "Watch Netflix titles instantly."  But I can do that with my mac and an internet connection now.  So what is Apple TV that makes it a better or different way to watch Netflix movies?  "Best of all, Apple TV is just $99"  Sorry, but how is that the Best of All part?  My Optimum Cable is charging me $30 a month for TV.  But Apple TV's best part is it costs $99?  Is that per month too?  I also see that everything streams wirelessly to Apple TV, and all I need it so connect apple tv to my widescreen TV using an HDMI cable sold separately.  Now I am really confused.  I plug in a cable to get wireless streaming?  If it is wireless, why does it need a cable?  If there is a cable involved, how is it wireless?  Color me clueless.  I cannot find a straight forward description of what Apple TV is.  And so I don't get how that is the answer to my question.  Sorry for being so simple-minded.  Thanks for the suggestion and I will go research further to learn what is an Apple TV.

  • IMac keeps crashing

I am having a serious problem with my iMac 5,1. I am running the latest Snow Leopard 10.6.3.
The problem is that the computer, after an irregular time, crashes with the grey screen coming down and the message that the computer has run into a serious problem and needs to restart.
I just had a new hard drive installed to replace one that was defective. It was replaced to try and solve a problem with Safari and Firefox crashing all the time. The new hard drive didn't help this problem much either. I have reinstalled the OS so many times, both a reinstall and by erasing the hard drive, that I am blue in the face. This thing has been to the Apple store at least three times, they couldn't find anything wrong with it, and to an authorized repair shop, they replaced the hard drive. Phone support keeps telling me to reinstall the OS. I think that is their standard line when they don't know what to do. They keep telling me it is a kernel failure that is shutting the system down. I know nothing about reading the error reports but I always see something about kernels in the error reports.
Anyway, my extended warranty runs out in about three weeks and I want this thing fixed once and for all. My guess is that I just got a lemon and no one wants to tell me I got robbed.
Can anyone out there offer me any help? I don't use the iMac for anything exotic, just internet, mail, and the assorted games along with recording old vinyl records to disc.
    Help, please

Here is what I get when the problem happens. Maybe this will help.

  • How do I copy my own movies from a DVD to my imac so I can edit? them.

I have made  a number of VCR to DVD coversions and also DV camcorder imprints on DVD+R discs. I now would like to load these onto my iMac for further editing before i either reburn to another DVD the finished product to send to my children. These are all childhood movies of events. So far I have tried to use
iMovie to no success. and also no success just trying to add. files. I also tried to do it on my PC laptop. I created the original discs on a Toshiba DVR and they have been finalized.  They play on the DVD in my mac but I cannot get them to download. How can I correct that? Is there a special software I need to buy or am I just ignorant?
Also I am unable to upload via firewire from my Sony DV camcorder to iMovie as well. It doesnt recognize it. Any suggestions how I can address this problem? Thanks for your help.
    Toulouse

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Burn in itunes using external optical drive imac 2009

My Matsushita optical drive (2009 iMac) no longer works.  Is there an external optical drive that I can purchase for burning music CD's?.  I already have Maverick, but I believe the operating system is not the problem.  The external optical drive has to be compatible with hardware that already has an internal (non-functioning) drive.

    I have a PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-XD09.
It's worked on systems with or without optical drives for me since 2009.
    It was $69 at Bestbuy.
It has a USB/Power combo cable that uses TWO USB ports, but I got a 5v AC adapter for $4.99 and now it only needs one USB port to function. I've burned with it under 10.8.4, 10.8.5 and 10.9.0.
They've upgraded it since I got mine (Link here) so it can burn Blu-Ray now

  • Kernel Panic with Netboot Across Subnet Intel iMac

I have a problem with trying to netboot a intel iMac across the subnet. It connects up goes to the spinning globe then the spinning globe stops spinning and I get a kernel panic.
I've tested that the mac can netboot in the same subnet as the netboot server. But I've got no idea why it's getting a kernel panic when trying to netboot across the subnet.
I'm using bombichs NBAS version 1.2

I've created the intel netboot image via the updated 10.4.6 "System Image Utility" and have enabled it via Server Admin.

  • I need help with my External DVD-RW and my iMac

I hope there is someone out there that can help me out. I was using my PC for burning DVDs and it just died. I've been using my Pioneer DVD burner in there and now I'm trying to use it on my Intel iMac. When I hooked it up using an external firewire case, this is what shows up in my profiler.
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D:
    Firmware Revision: 1.41
    Interconnect: FireWire
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2000 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
Even though it is Apple supported, nothing mounts and it cannot burn anything in Finder, iTunes, Toast, etc. Can someone out there help me out.
    Thanks in advance!
    Montri - THAIICE

I have a Pioneer 110-D flashed to a 110 in an external firewire case and I can burn with all my apps.
    This is my profile:

You could try a different firewire even though profiler sees the drive.

  • I have a dvr and I want to monitor from my phone.  this worked when I had a Belkin router that let me open ports.  I use "canyouseeme" and it can't see 80, 9000 or 1025. How do I make them available?

I have a Lorex DVR that I want to monitor from my IPhone and IPad.  I used to be able to do this when I had a Belkin router (easy to open ports) but I bought the AirPort Extreme router and no longer have that capability.  When I use "canyouseeme" they can NOT see 80, 9000 or 1025.  Lorex says I need them all available in order to access.  Help!  And all the help I see refers to a earlier version of the AirPort Utility so I cant use those to look at anything, I cant find the same screens, I have version 6.1 (610.31).  I also don't really understand how ports work, so I need a pretty basic explanation.

Well...I went to the modem (Westell, WireSpeed), found the NAT settings, once again, I'm WAY over my head, I am assuming this is a TCP connection (as opposed to a UDP) and per Lorex my mobile devices will use port 1025.  So I gave it a "global port range" of 1-10 and I indicated that the "base host port" was 80, 1025, & 9000 (ports 1,2,3).  When I selected the 'enable' it asked for a "host devise" my choices are my IPhone, IMac and the IP address for the dvr, so I choose the dvr.  I still cannot connect and canyouseeme still can NOT find these open ports.  This is taking up my whole day! I don't know how people figure this stuff out.

  • External hard disk for use with quicksilver 2002 and intel imac 24"

i am wanting to purchase an external hard disk to be used with both a g4 and an intel imac 24".
i am considering a seagate barracuda 500gb or 750gb and purchasing an external case separately.
    interfaces - usb2, firewire 400 and 800.
Do I need a case with the "oxford chipset" to have it work.
Are all seagates compatible these days.
I was looking at a ultra ata100 hard disk. Will this disk connect automatically to the enclosure or will additional cables be required
Is the Ice Cube Generation II Ide enclosure ok to use.
    Appreciate any help given

    Hi-
The Ice Cube uses an Oxford chipset, (part of the external housings onboard controller) so it should be fine. The Oxford chipset has been shown to give the best compatibility and performance, thus being an desirable feature.

Using a Seagate Ultra ATA 100 drive should give you good, quiet, reliable service. There are no problems with the Seagate ATA drives.
Using the drive and housing with firewire will give you the best results, and firewire will allow you to use a bootable backup on the external drive, should the need be.
The housing comes with all the necessary cables to connect and use your external drive.
Insert the hard drive into the housing, connect the power and the firewire, format the hard drive, and you are ready to go..........

  • Replacing the Optical Drive on my iMac G4

Some of the earliest DVD burners went in to the +iMac (Flat Panel)+ model Macs and many users are now reporting problems with their original drives.
Your initial fault finding should include:
Using a drive cleaning disc to ensure there isn't dust build up on the lens.
Try functionality in another OS X user account.
Ensure that the media you are using is suitable. For example, the maximum write speed for the original drives is 4x DVD-R and these drive cannot burn DVD+R or DVD+RW media.
Revert to a recent, known good, clone of your system (i.e. from a previous software state).

If it becomes apparent that a replacement is required outside warranty there are two broad options:
    Internal.
Most replacement optical drive models should work under Tiger/Leopard fine. Patchburn will enable operation in Panther/Jaguar.
The DVR-115 (20x DVD±RW DL for $35) has been proved good by several users and is great value.
It's fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be very cautious, especially around the video cable. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are two options for guiding you through the procedure:
    MacWorld
    xlr8yourmac
There are also some additional photos which you can find here.
Its worth reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac drive database to get other people's experiences before you commence.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run into problems - it's only a $5 part).
    External.
Certainly a whole lot less effort to install. Should you upgrade to an Intel iMac / Mac Mini / MacBook / MacBook Pro / MacBook Air in the future you'll have access to this faster desktop-spec tray loading drive rather than the slower laptop-spec slot drive installed in these current Macs. This means you'll get 20x burning versus 8x and be able to use small-size and mis-shapen discs.
    Here's one example - 20x DVD±RW DL burner again:

You can probably just tape it down with package sealing tape. I would just re-use the old stuff. On my recent upgrade, my tape just barely had enough sticky left.
    Edit:
Here is a source I found:

    Pretty cheap, too.
