DVX footage - Exporting question

Hi Guys,
I know I am going to get some reply's directing me toward tutorials and such but i'm in a bit of a tight spot and I need some instant karma. I have searched here and on DVX user but cannot find what I need.
I shot some footage of my g/f yesterday and we need to send it way across the Atlantic via my idisk asap. It's something she has choreographed for an animation. It's only preliminary footage but they DO need it and i'm not getting the sample video files I was hoping for.
Due to the crappy light conditions in the studio we used I shot it using my DVX 100's standard scene file F1 (progressive off).
Using Final cut 5 (on a G4 Mac Powerbook, running Leopard) I imported it set to DV NTSC (I'm in the UK but my DVX is NTSC). I didn't go for the 29.97 as I thought that was used when shooting 24p.
The footage looked fine on the time line and in the viewer. I only made a very basic edit and added text slugs at the beginning and then exported it using Quicktime Conversion. I exported using Apple Intermediate Codec and MPEG 4 but when I watch them back both codecs show nasty lines around the edges of anything moving ie. my girlfriend.
I assume this is something to do with interlacing but unfortunately I am not yet at the level of understanding to either know this for sure or, more importantly, do anything about it.
If anybody can I would really appreciate a shove in the right direction here. The footage we shot is clean and I REALLY need the footage we export to be clean too. I also understand that this is a very complex subject and I am currently reading as much as I can to try and learn about all things video.
Right now it's about getting my settings right and knowing which format is best to export to.
p.s. Should have mentioned that this is probably going to only be viewed on computer monitors.
Hope someone can help,
Double ohh

X,
Apart from my iDisk being the usual drag it is, everything went superbly. I played around a bit and quite quickly came up with my clips in the following formats;
Exported through Quicktime Conversion - Quicktime movie - H.264
Quality: High
Key rate: 24
Frame rate: current
Key frame: Every 24
I left the frame size native and checked Deinterlace.
I am a bit unsure as to why the files came out differing sizes as the 4 takes were all from the same angle and for the same length. The lighting may have changed a bit, but not much.
The largest file came out at 108MB and the smallest (of four) was 78MB; quite a result (for me).
I know you guys must get a continuous flow of questions like mine from people (like me) who don't know the basics. Especially concerning DVX related issues. I am actually reading Barry Green's Book and regularly reading posts from the likes of Shane Ross and Noah and checking sites like Ken Stone. But it's a tricky subject to get to grips with and I really appreciate the chance to be able to get help and advice here.
Thank you very much for your time and your patience today. It was a great help and I don't think I would have gotten the footage where it needed to be had you not given me such a decent explanation. Thank you very much.
As an experiment I exported one of the files again changing the frame size to 640x480 and the frame rate to 29. It cam out at 62MB and just as good quality.
All the clips I exported did not suffer from the lines that I had previously been experiencing.
Thank you once again,
Double Ohh

  • Bird box camera footage - Export question

Hi all, I have just got a bird box camera and recorded a lot of footage of birds. I am now in the process of editing the nest box footage with Premier Pro. My question is, what is the best format to export to the web? The footage is excellant and around 10MB. Ideally, I would like the footage to be viewed on most browers. I have tried AVI, MPEG etc. Shall I be looking at flash streaming instead. Hopefully, with the correct format, most people can view my nest box footage without any problem. Please can anyone advise. JF

Flash seems to be the number 1 choice, followed by WMV (not easily viewed on MAC's).
It was raining cats and dogs when the two friends, that were playing golf arrived at the 14-th hole. One said to his friend: "Look at that bird-watcher over there. Can you imagine bird-watching in this kind of wheather?"

    Hello,
    You wrote:
CAN THIS ERROR CAUSE BIG DESASTER TO DB IN FUTUREThe error message EXP-00091: Exporting questionable statistics just warns you that the statistics
were exported but these statistics may be not useable.
So, if you have to import these Tables, you may have to collect again the statistics of these Tables.
It's not relative to this problem but why don't you use DataPump (expdp/impdp) ?
Please find enclosed a link about DataPump, it's much more powerful than the classical export/import:

    Hi,
    >>because I exported dump from oracle10G
Then you use the exp 10g version, right ? To move data DOWN a version(s), you need to export using that lower versions EXP tool and using IMP that lower version tool.
Take a look at this below?

For DVD you can't use H.264.  You need MPEG2-DVD.

  • DVX 24PA Capture Question

Just started importing DVX footage and I am following all the steps for Advanced Pulldown capture.
I have set a capture preset for Advanced Pulldown with Anamorphic checked. When the footage is captured it is still at 29.97 should it show 24? At this point do I drop it on a 24 timeline and it will work as 24 footage?
Or do i run a reverse telecine or advanced pulldown tool?
Message was edited by: Michele Spiezia

That's not so true. The deck doesn't matter. The deck is reading digital information off the tape. What is on the tape will come OFF the tape. There's a flag in the meta-data that will tell FCP which frames to skip.
The advanced cadence is a bugger at best. If you do anything odd while shooting you're asking for trouble.
Don't ever rewind the tape to review shot material
Don't ever turn the camera off before stopping the recording with the red button
Don't EVER switch the scene wheel even if you don't shoot anything
Sometimes the find-last-frame search on the camera works, sometimes not - don't use it either.
I'll wager you had a break in this cadence due to one of the above or something else entirely. I usually have the deck just stop recording at that point, but maybe you have set something to blow thru that type of error and it just decided not to remove the cadence.
Maybe you can find the place where the doink happens, maybe not. If capturing half the tape at a time works for you just log it that way and go.
    Good luck,
    CaptM

  • Basic Exporting Question

My main question is a very basic exporting question, but here is a super-condensed explanation of my big-picture goal for context:
Large (~450 MB) aiff on CD --> trim w/ Quicktime --> small (~16 MB) MP3 in iTunes
I would like to take an audio file (aiff) that is approximately 450 MB and export it from Quicktime and in doing so, reduce the file size and convert it to MP3. When I simply try to export it, it doesn't ask me about what size I want, nor does it give the option of MP3 formatting.
I have figured out how to reach my goal, but it's a mess. After I make my trims in QT, I have to:
    1. select "share" instead of "export".
    2. It asks me what size I want and I select small.
    3. The file is then exported as a Quicktime movie into Mail and the size is reduced from 450 MB to about 20 MB.
    4. I then have to "right-click" on the attachment in the email that is created,
    5. save the attachment,
    6. discard the email,
    7. import the file into iTunes, and
    8. create an MP3 in iTunes to finally arrive at my goal.
This seems like a ridiculously convoluted process to change a large aiff to a small MP3 and put it in iTunes. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I guess the basic answer to my question is that it can't be done in one or two fell swoops. The problem is that it starts on a burned disc, and I need to make edits to it before it ends up in iTunes (to be eventually used in iWeb). I was hoping to avoid juggling back and forth between iTunes and QT. I either would have to send it back to QT to do the edits after -->iTunes-->mp3, or import the large file from the CD to QT, make the edits, save changes, import large file to iTunes, convert to mp3.

  • Exporting question #53427

I read through exporting questions for over the last year, but I came away more confused than ever. Here is my problem (which others had, but I'm looking for the quickest solution):
I made a 3 hour video on iMovie 8 only to read about its limitations afterward. I used information I found on some post to download iMovie 6 and then export my iMovie 8 project to it for its finalization.
I tried to export the movie LARGE size and it took 6 hours only to end up with the message error -2125.
I then tried to export to Quicktime, but it was scheduled to take 30+ hours.
Is there an easier way to get the iMovie 8 project into iMovie 6 in order to complete it?
(As a side note, I have a 2003 copy of Final Cut Pro which I have not installed. Would this be worth installing on my MacBook to transfer the project to that?)
    Thanks as always.

iDVD accepts projects of up to 120min.. so 2 DVD would be enough, allthough ≤60min allow the best quality in iDVD ..

  • Exporting Questions

I'm new to FCE (3.5.1), but have been reading Wolsky's Editing Workshop (like it even with the typos!).
Primarily, I want to create DVD's of HD footage from a Canon XH-A1 (1080-60i). (Yes, I realize it will be in SD)
Using iDVD 6, I've found that Export -> QuickTime Movies... creates a lot of artifacts--horizontal jaggies in particular. Using QuickTime Conversions.. H.264 and best quality settings seems to give a better image. So my two questions:
    1) It seems like QuickTime Conversions is recently taking substantially longer than it had before--It's at 30% on one project and projecting 30+hours to complete. In fact FCE craps out completely whenever I try to export
    2) What options do I have to get better results--image quality off the camera is stunning. End result on DVD is no where near a good commercial DVD.

That can depend on what you're exporting, how long
the video is, what codec and compression settings
you're using, what computer, and how much RAM you
    have available for the encoding.
    Video is 42:02;16
Codec: H.264 Settings: Best Quality, Multipass
    Computer:
    Machine Model: iMac4,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.1f5
From about 84 through 95 I used a Mac as my primary machine. I've gotten pretty Mac stupid inthe past decade: I used to know how to determine how much RAM each prgram was using, but not anymore...
I think FCE has gone stupid as well, and have heard but don't know the details of how to get FCE to re-initialize itself--tossing the preferences or something.

  • Widescreen export question

hello, quick question. I shot in widescreen mode, and edited in an anamorphic sequence. I am all done with my project and I want to have one widescreen copy for my computer, and one for DVD. Is there anything wrong with exporting using the conversion and telling FCP to produce an actual widescreen video and using that file for the DVD also or is it better to make 2 different files?

no, not as bad as all that. in this case it means that the video signal is passed through the DV codec one more time ... the DV data is decompressed using the DV codec for display - thats what you're seeing in the canvas - by exporting using qt conversion that data is then compressed using the chosen codec. in this case its the same codec as the source footage ... although the loss of quality in this instance will likely be minimal, impercptible to most, any recompression should be avoided when at all possible (in anolog tape terms its akin to a generational loss, like making a copy of a copy)

  • Does iMovie '09 downgrade HD video?!  Import/export questions.

Just bought my first HD camcorder that records in 1920x1080 resolution; I was planning to import the clips into iMovie'09 at the "full" setting (instead of the "large" setting) to retain maximum quality -- but when I do this, and export an iMovie using QuickTime, it says that the "current" resolution is 960x540. Umm, huh?
I am SURE I am recording and importing at the 1920x1080 resolution, so why is iMovie downgrading my HD by default?
Is there a way to keep the full resolution? Should I care? Eventually I want to maybe play these movies on an HDTV... I know I can change the export settings from 960x540 to 1920x1080, but how you can you magically achieve that full quality if the project is "current" at 960x540?
Given the above, is it even worth importing footage in the full 1920x1080 mode if it converts to 960x540 anyway?!
Thanks for any help in advance.

this is an interesting question. I had read that if you add anything tricky to the 1080 project that it goes to 540 anyway, speed changes, things like that. And even if you share to media browser at the HD level (a 540 Large import from camera) you then get upgraded to 720p.
your last question has eluded me. but I import from camera at large (540). I share to media browser at HD level and get a 720p .mov. I tried Export to QuickTime and picked Apple Intermediate Codec (Supposed to be less compressed, takes longer, larger file) but it had problems with the colors in the stills of the movie as it went from still to still. That 720p movie , when played on a HD screen (my HD TV) looked excellent, not HD HD, but was much better than SD. and DVDs made from that look pretty good.
At some point we will be recording in HD, editing in HD, and burning BlueRays to play HD. Apple will have to change iMovie to default handle it, keep it in HD, and add a blueray player and burner to the computers, i hear they do not plan on that.we will also need large many TB drives to store it all on.
The two issues that you have to remember, is that you probably have a consumer brand HD video recorder, what you are recording is HD but with poor optics. And when you watch it on your computer screen it wont look as good as it will on a better screen, as your computer screen is likely a limiting agent as well.

  • Processing / exporting question

    I have a 8 Core (2 x 2.8 quad core intel xeon) with 4gb (800mhz DDR 2 fbdimm) of RAM
    AND....
I have a iMac 2.8ghz intel core 2 duo with 2gb (667mhz DDR SD) amount of RAM
we have projects that are exported (or converted) from DV footage into FLV files that go up on the web
we purchased the 8 core for the processing power to export these particular files faster.....
    My question is.....
the 8 core doesnt go any faster than the iMac exporting these files!? Is there something wrong? is there something we can do to make it go faster? can we configure it to make it use more of this processing power?
and of course we are using compressor to do so, is there a way to make compressor use more processing power?
    Confused....
    Thanks

Provided that you can export a QT Movie out of FCP, you'll want to make use of Virtual Clustering. Mike Curtis (of HD for Indies fames) was nice enough to document this process on his site.
This process, however, will not work if your workflow involves exporting directly from FCP to Compressor. Also, it's recommended to have at least 8GB of RAM if you're doing this.

  • Subtle horizontal lines in HDV footage exported from iMovie 06

    Hello!
I just bought a Cannon HV-30, which I'll be using to film an instructional DVD. I'm hoping to use iMovie 06 to edit, and was planning on using iDVD until I realized how tricky DVD authoring is, if you want to sell thousands of copies of your DVD and have any hope of them playing on people's DVD players.
At any rate, I still want to be able to burn drafts of my film using iDVD. I tried doing this yesterday, but my footage was distorted both in the iDVD preview, and in the DVD I burned. The distortion looked different depending on how big the preview window was. When it was fairly small, I'd get this wavy, ripply effect whenever the camera panned. When I maximized the window, and also in the DVD (which was full-screen), I'd get a more subtle jagged edge to vertical lines--every-other-line on the monitor would stick out, like a fine-toothed comb. When there wasn't movement in the film, things looked pretty good, except for a bit of horizontal-lines visible.
I made my first DVD by using the Export... iDVD function. After I read on this forum that this doesn't produce the best quality, I tried importing the iMovie project into iDVD, but I got similar results.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a ton,
    Rob

DVDs look best on the system they were designed for: CRT TV sets with 640x480 square pixels NTSC (768x576 square pixels PAL)
When 'blownup' in size on large computer monitors or large HD TV sets the image quality will be less than optimum - that's why the new Blu-ray were created.
There are steps you can take when shooting your video that will help. Remember that mpg compression works on the differences between frames and anything that creates unnecessary difference between frames will cause reduced mpg compressed quality. So: use a tripod to avoid camera shake; make all your pans slow and smooth; and shoot with plenty of light to avoid the 'grain' caused by electronic noise in low light situations.

  • File Export question and ID3 Tags

First question, have tried using Apple's recommended method of using QT Pro to export movies as "iPod" but when attempting to sync to an iPod get an incompatible file format. What is the "right" export option?
Secondly, on one file I've imported it into iTunes then set all the ID3 fields to my liking, then uploaded into iTunes U but the fields are incorrect. I've tried deleting the file from iTunes U several times and re-imported the file into iTunes and set the ID3 fields and still nothing. Any suggestions on how to get my file up and hold the ID3 fields info?
    thanks

    http://www.oit.duke.edu/dms/itunesu/itunes_tagging.html
If you've been having ID3 issues with MP3s, that was recently corrected (well, just the album art thing, everything else worked as far as I know). I've had bad luck with third party ID3 tag editors, so we are recommending people do it through iTunes.app
Since you are already doing that, I'd be worried that my site was set to overwrite the tags (this is an option). If you're the admin, you can check it, otherwise you can ask them.

  • H.264 Vimeo Export Questions

    Hello,
I exported a H.264 according to Vimeo's guidelines ( Compression Tutorials on Vimeo ) for Premiere Pro CC.  I'm a bit dissapointed in the quality of the export - contrast is down, midtones are brighter, a noticeable loss of detail and added noise.  I'm coming from 10 Bit DPX and understand there is a big difference, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers in regards to exporting via Premiere.  This is the first project I've cut with it.
Should I use Media Encoder instead or is that essentially the same?  Any pointers much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for the response.  We were using both quicktime and Vimeo to compare image quality.
The source footage is BMCC RAW and to retain as much image quality I rendered to DPX from Resolve after the grade and brought the image sequences into Premiere.
There is some quality lost between Resolve and Premiere but the difference between Premiere Pro CC 2014 and Vimeo is significant.
I'll do a comparison inside Premiere to double check.
