DW CS4 greek characters into html entities

I am not sure what is wrong with this one. All greek
characters are converted into html entities (ex.
σδ) when I type them in design mode. I have
tried selecting different encoding options but all have the same
result.
This is really annoying.

Change the page's encoding from Greek (Windows) to Unicode
(UTF-8).
Modify > Page Properties > Title/Encoding.

Hi All,
We are currently facing an issue of inserting greek characters into Oracle database using ICAN505.
We receive a file containing greek characters.The values from the file should be inserted into the database.We are reading the file using file OTD with default encoding.
The file can contain english characters too other than greek characters.
The database NLS_CHARACTERSET is AL32UTF8.
When I insert using an insert statement directly ,the values get inserted properly into the DB table.
Inserting the same values using code results in improper characters getting inserted into the table in the database.
Please help....

It works for SQL Developer, which does not depend on NLS_LANG, so I suspect a problem with your NLS settings.

HTML Editor - converting "special characters" into entities

Hi everyone,
I'm currently in the middle of formatting my wife's novel into 'clean' html so I can use Calibre to create a well formatted epub/mobi/etc.
I've read that TextMate on Mac includes a function to "Convert Selection to Entities excluding Tags". In other words it will replace all special characters (ellipses, copyright sign, etc) with the html entities.
I'm currently using Kate and I can't seem to find anything similar. Is anyone aware of any linux editors with the same function?

Convert smart quotes and other high ascii characters to HTML

I'd like to set up Dreamweaver CS4 Mac to automatically convert smart quotes and other high ASCII characters (m-dashes, accent marks, etc.) pasted from MS Word into HTML code. Dreamweaver 8 used to do this by default, but I can't find a way to set up a similar auto-conversion in CS 4. Is this possible? If not, it really should be a preference option. I code a lot of HTML emails and it is very time consuming to convert every curly quote and dash.

I too am having a related problem with Dreamweaver CS5 (running under Windows XP), having just upgraded from CS4 (which works fine for me) this week.
In my case, I like to convert to typographic quotes etc. in my text editor, where I can use macros I've written to speed the conversion process. So my preferred method is to key in typographic letters & symbols by hand (using ALT + ASCII key codes typed in on the numeric keypad) in my text editor, and then I copy and paste my *plain* ASCII text (no formatting other than line feeds & carriage returns) into DW's DESIGN view. DW displays my high-ASCII characters just fine in DESIGN view, and writes the proper HTML code for the character into the source code (which is where I mostly work in DW).
I've been doing it this way for years (first with GoLive, and then with DW CS4) and never encountered any problems until this week, when I upgraded to DW CS5.
But the problem I'm having may be somewhat different than what others have complained of here.
In my case, some high-ASCII (above 128) characters convert to HTML just fine, while others do not.
E.g., en and em dashes in my cut-and-paste text show as such in DESIGN mode, and the right entries

turn up in the source code. Same is true for the ampersand

and the copyright symbol

and for such foreign letters as the e with acute accent (ALT+0233)

What does NOT display or code correctly are the typographic quotes. E.g., when I paste in (or special paste; it doesn't seem to make any difference which I use for this) text with typographic double quotes (ALT+0147 for open quote mark and ALT+0148 for close quote mark), which should appear in source code as
    “[...]”
DW strips out the ASCII encoding, displaying the inch marks in DESIGN mode, and putting this
    "[...]"
in my source code.
The typographic apostrophe (ALT+0146) is treated differently still. The text I copy & paste into DW should appear as
    [...]’[...]
in the source code, but instead I get the foot mark (both in DESIGN and CODE views):
I've tried adjusting the various DW settings for "encoding"
    MODIFY > PAGE PROPERTIES > TITLE/ENCODING > Encoding:
and for fonts
    EDIT > PREFERENCES > FONTS
but switching from "Unicode (UTF-8)" to "Western European" hasn't solved the problem (probably because in my case many of the higher ASCII characters convert just fine). So I don't think it's the encoding scheme I use that's the problem.
Whatever the problem is, it's caused me enough headaches and time lost troubleshooting that I'm planning to revert to CS4 as soon as I post this.

I'm trying to use the photo gallery example and i need to
display greek characters in the dropdown box of the example but all
i get is trashed characters. I have declared encoding=iso-8859-7
for the xml file, saved it as utf-8 file and tried to use CDATA to
display the characters but no luck so far..Is there another
solution?

Hello,
I'm a little confused by the way you have created the XML
file. Because you declared the file as ISO-8859-7 the file will be
interpreted using this encoding. The real file encoding being UTF-8
the characters will not be correctly read by the browser.
Another thing you should consider is the encoding of the HTML
page that should be the same as the XML file.
Try to save the XML and declare it UTF-8 then go into the
HTML and change its setting too into UTF-8. In case this is not
working please post here a link to your web page to analyze closely
the problem.

RTF and Greek characters

Hello
I am trying to build a swing application witch displays
RTF
documents in Greeks from a database. I have try to use
jTextPane but the Greeks characters does not displays
correct.
I have try to paste a document from a word with the same
results.
What is the problem?

The problem is not the font
My problem is that:
I am having a huge access database file with an rtf field. That rtf has created from Word. When am trying to display those field in a JTextPane greek characters does not displayed correct.
If i wrote some text with Greek characters in JTextPane then those characters appears correct.
When i saw row data from rtf field in access greek characters is as \'e1\'e2\'e3 etc. When I saw row data from an RTF file thaw created from JTextPane greek characters appears like this \u945 ?\u946 ?\u947 ?\u948 ?\u949 ?\u950 ?\u951 ?\u952 etc.
I think the problem is that data in RTF field in access is in Cp1253 - Windows Greek and JTextPane needs UTF-8 or UTF-16 RTF
Is is Possible to convert the data from RTF field from Database File to UTF-8 or UTF-16 RTF to work correct with Java?
or best to convert to HTML as UTF ?

The final solution to greek characters in AWT applets(????)

OK. I have searched the whole web and asked whoever I knew. The question was simple: How do I show greek characters in a TextField in an AWT Applet? Some people said that I should change the font properties inside MY jre/lib installation but then I want EVERYONE and not just ME seeing the greek characters! Adding a greek font into the applet's jar was another "solution" but who wants to have an applet of about 2MBs? So I think I have come up to the answer ... ONLY with jre > 1.4.0 somebody could handle greek characters in AWT Applets without trooble! If somebody has managed to show and handle greek characters in a TextField inside an AWT Applet (which I doubt), I would like to know EXACTLY HOW as I am tired of non-working "solutions"! I hope this post saves you from a lot of time searching for the HolyGrail

I haven't worked with a TextField but I worked with a JTextField. My solution wasn't very straightforward but it did the job.
I used this solution in order to work with linux, but you must add an if
statement to check the OS.
If your problem was how to view Greek characters in a non internation version of
Java, then as far as I know, you cannot! Also JDK 1.3.1_01 and j2re 1.4.0_01
use a different way of loading system fonts, so with the latter you cannot use system fonts unless you put them in you java directory.
(I use linux so don't be surprissed if these work different in windows)

Issue in Inserting Greek characters in Oracle DB

We are facing the following issue in our project. Need urgent help.
We have a multilingual string(message with Greek characters) coming in from KSD gateway. This is to be processed by MHL(message handling layer- which validates and converts the incoming message into SQL statements and vice versa). Once the validation and conversion of incoming message is completed and then SQL statement is prepared, it inserts this data in the Oracle database. We are using OCI interface for database communication. Client program is written in C language. While inserting data in Oracle DB, we are getting exception as explained below.

Cannot Store Greek Characters in NVARCHAR2 columns

Can someone please help.
I have a table TEST with one column A of type NVARCHAR2(20) and when I try to insert the greek character Ω(Omega) - it gets stored as O instead.
I am inserting using SQL Developer using the 'N' prefix and my environment is as follows:
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
NLS_CHARACTERSET = WE8MSWIN1252
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET = AL16UTF16
NLS_LANG setting on client side is ENGLISH_UNITED KINGDOM.WE8MSWIN1252.
Why can I not insert greek characters with the above setup and what do I need to do/change in order to be able to insert greek characters in a database using the national characterset for storing unicode data ?

Result of running SELECT a, dump(a) FROM TEST after insert an 'O' and an 'Ω' is as follows:

Can't input Japanese characters into BrowserBasedHelp search

We're using RH 8.0.2.208 to create BrowserBasedHelp output for a client-side application. We have a different project for each language. In the Japanese language output, a user cannot enter Japanese characters into the search field using the Japanese keyboard; when you press the keys, nothing displays in the search field, but you CAN copy and paste Japanese characters into the search field and find results.
The Project Settings: Language setting is set to Japanese (Japan), and the properties in the generated HTML topic files are also set for Japanese.
Has anyone run into this before? I've searched and found a few topics with similar problems, but didn't see any replies or answers.

I dont have japanese keyboard, but I tried the same with Japanese langauge bar installed with Microsoft IME. And I was able to type japanese characters in Browser based help.

My webservice accepts this content in the form of String Object. It will parse this template(String object) using SAX parser and finds the following attribute
Subject,Body,From,Recipient and constructs and sends out the mail to the recipient which is working fine with English language. I have some Greece clients also. When i edited the body part in Greek language. Instead of sending those Greek characters some question marks are coming to that mail.
I extracted the code out which parses that XML Template and sends out the mail. I created one java project using that code. Parser parsed that template and sent the mail successfully with the Greek characters. I suspect that Axis or Soap engine is not supporting Greece Characters..
I tried with encoding="ISO-8859-7" and UTF-8 both but it din't work.
Could any one help me in solving this problem?

I had the similar issue however I could resolve it by setting the appropriate encoding in server startup script.

i've a file which is encoded in unicode. This file has some normal characters and some special characters wich are greek.
Now i need to read this file using utl_file and map the information to a database table.
The table as some columns as varchar2 and some as nvarchar2 to store the greek characters.
Before execute the procedure, the NLS_LANG is set to Greek and what happen is after inserting data into table, i cannot read the greek characters anymore.
My idea is that the problem is about the "unicode" of the file.

but in unix I put the line NLS_LANG=GREEK_GREECE.EL8ISO8859P7; export NLS_LANG; in my .profile.
In PL code I put

EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'alter session set nls_territory=greece';
I have the regional setting from Windows to greek.
If you can think in anything that can be missing, please tell me.

Cannot create a G/L account with Greek characters

Hello,
I need to create an account in the Country Chart of Accounts of Greece with Greek characters.
It does not show the Greek characters when I copy it from my Excel list into SAP.
In SAP - table T001 & T002, the Greek language (EL) is defined.
What else do I need to do to create the Greek account?

Thanks, but unfortunately it does not work.
I have also tried to log on in Greek (EL) and changed the language in my own user profile.
But I don't get the Greek characters.

Hi experts,
I have this problem of cant store chinese characters into files(eg. .txt and .properties). I am adding
these chinese text through a JSP website form....After i key in chinese characters in the textboxes
in the website and sumbit the results, my chinese characters turned into ASCII or rather garbage in
the files.
Is there any way i can get the exact chinese characters i entered in the webite into the files?
Need urgent assistance here.
