DW CS4 painfully slow in W7 64 bit

Hi
I recently built a new core i7 machine with 6GB ram and a solid state hard drive and installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on it. I expected it to be very, very fast! Most apps run fine but Dreamweaver CS4 is unusably slow. Every action which involves interraction with windows is painfully slow. Starting the app it takes 20 secs before a splash screen and then another minute before the panels have fully loaded. Opening files takes up to a minute, I've just updated a Library item but can't get it to apply that item to 5 pages.
Previously I was on Vista Ultimate 32 bit with my 3 year old Intel Core Duo machine and CS4 ran fine at perfectly usable speeds.
I've tried setting the app to run in Win XP SP3 mode, no difference.
I've run Adobe updater, there are no updates to be had.
I suspect a problem with the aero interface, but my drivers are all up to date.
Maybe the problem arises from running a 32 bit app on the 64 bit OS?
I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, tried running whilst that was disabled, same problem.
I'm at my wits' end. I do a lot of work on DW, but at the moment it is unusable.
Any help gratefully received......
TP

Having the same issues as well - Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, KIS2010 (9.0.0.736), Dreamweaver CS4.  Dreamweaver now takes 1-2 minutes before it launches, once I'm finally able to open a file I'm constantly presented with a (Not responding) notice.  I'm not unable to even create simple CSS rules - I create and id, click create new rule button, compound selector dialog window opens, I click Ok - then nothing.
Some form of tech support would be helpful on this issue.  I've gone through the Russian forums for Kaspersky but I'm not seeing much beyond continually disabling portions of KIS2010 until magically something might work, or might not.  I'm fully aware that Adobe will place the blame on Kaspersky, just as Kaspersky will place the blame on Adobe - that being said, those of us having issues, are we all using KIS2010 and experiencing delays?  Or, and this is going to be painfully optimistic of me, has anyone gotten the above combination to actually work?

  • InDesign CS4 painfully slow in W7 64 bit

    Hi
I've been having real trouble with Adobe products since doing a clean install of W7 Pro 64 bit, which seems (perhaps) to be related to antivirus software.  Simple stuff like importing a pic can take a minute - even if it is simple 1MB jpeg. Adjusting the tracking of a font in 1em increments allows me to do maybe 5 increments, then it has to stop for 30 seconds for a think, before continuing. It makes the software all but unusable. Interestingly, Quark 8 seems to work fine.....
Some actions are instant, some are really slow, there's no discernable pattern.
I started my new machine with Kaspersky 2010 AV, which made DW unusable, so I removed that and replaced it with Norton 360, which improved DW but knackered various other programmes including Indy, so I removed that and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Initially everything ran ok, but over a few weeks Indy got slower and slower, until it is now unusable. So I really don't know whether it is the AV software doing this or not.
My PC is a Core i7 machine with 6 GB RAM and a new ATi graphics card & SSD, so it should be very fast. But in real world use, all adobe products are running much less well that they did on a three year old Intel Core Duo pc with 4 GB ram and Vista Ultimate 32 bit.
Has anyone out there had similar problems and is there a fix?
    Here's hoping....

    Hi all
    Thanks for all your contributions.
My W7 install was clean onto a brand new machine. The CS4 premium installer put everything where it wanted to, I didn't interfere. So PS is in the 64 bit apps, the rest are in 32 bit, all on the c drive which is a 250GB SSD. I only keep Windows and apps on that drive, so it has over 170GB free.
All docs are on my D drive, which is an internal SATA 2 drive, this includes all the images as well. That's a 1TB Hitachi 7200 rpm disk, so should be fine.
It is on an ethernet network, but it isn't accessing anything from within Indy over the network.
The weird thing is that initially after I installed MSE as my AV, everything seemed fine. But over the last 6 weeks it's just got progressively slower.
    It's baffling......

  • Is Version Cue CS4    TOO SLOW TO USE??????

Is it just me or is the new CS4 versioncue workflow extremely slow?
After installing Version Cue CS4 on the same server that was running CS3 and trying to open an existing InDesign project (book with dozens of linked images), I realized that using VersionCue CS4 is so painfully slow compared to CS3 that it's unusable.
It seems that VC CS4 does not create local copies on the hard drive and instead, all traffic is sent over the relatively slow Ethernet connections. While this does help with synchronizing confusions, it makes working on the projects way too slow.
VC CS4 is running with 768MB on my server, so I don't think that is the problem.
Will someone respond to this post and let me know if (a) I'm probably doing something wrong and everything will be OK, or (b) if I can install CS4 and still use VC CS3 on the server?
    thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response.. It seems a bit hit or miss on opening up my projects.
For example, if I click on a PDF file in Bridge, it takes upwards of a minute to launch Acrobat 9 and display the first page. If I open Acrobat 9 first, and then click on the PDF, it opens almost instantly.
Also, we have a job with a Microsoft PPT slideshow. When editing the slide show and saving back to the Version Cue 4 server (pressing save in the PowerPoint program), it takes upwards of a minute.
This is with 768MB allocated to the stand-alone server, and 1GB assigned to the Adobe Drive CS4 cache on the client computer.
Does anyone know how to get VC CS4 or Adobe Drive to operate faster?

  • ITunes 7.6, 7.7 very slow on Vista 64-bit

I installed iTunes 7.7 (iTunes64Setup.exe) on my Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition. It installs successfully. It works in the sense that it does not crash and I can listen to music and sync my iPod.
It is, however, painfully slow. When I scrolls through the library, there is a noticeable delay the scroll bars and my mouse cursor. The delay worsens when I resize iTunes horizontally long way.
    Is this a known issue?
Vista 64-bit users, could you tell me how fast iTunes 7.7 works on your 64-bit Vista?

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I have the same problem and it seems to affect the playback as well (stutters & starts).

  • Time Machine backup painfully slow all of a sudden

For some reason my time machine backups have become painfully slow for some reason. They were fine earlier today, then IIRC I booted windows, then booted back into OSX to run a backup. Despite there being only 1 or two changes (files added to the system) time machine began "preparing backup" by going through all the files on my HDD! Now, it is backing up, but at the rate of about 5 Kb/s!
Something is wrong. I've tried deleting the progress file in the backup folder and "resetting" TM by deselecting the backup drive and selecting it again. Nothing worked. Why would TM be so slow all of a sudden?
    Has anyone any ideas?

That is a bit suspicious, but not necessarily wrong. Something caused it to think about 16 GB had been changed (it adds 20% for the "padding" in the message).
How are you running Windoze? Is it on a separate partition? If you're running it via virtualization software, with the vm file on an OSX disk but excluded from TM, that's a possible explanation.
105384 files in only 7.2mb? I doubt it...something seems fishy
Those counts are nearly always very high, and sometimes crazy high. There's some indication it's counting all the metadata, extended attributes, etc., as separate files.
If in doubt, boot up from your Install disc and do a +*Repair Disk+* on your boot volume. Then reboot normally and run another backup. That should trigger a "deep traversal," where TM will compare everything on your system with it's backups, to be sure it's got everything it should.

  • SCVMM 2012 R2 VM on SMB 3.0 file share cloning is not offloaded and painfully slow

I setup a test environment, it appears the SCVMM always use BITS to clone VM that was painfully slow
SCVMM1: SCVMM 2012 R2 with the latest windows update
VHOST1 and VHOST2: Hyper-V Host. Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest update
SERVER1: Windows File server, with Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest update. The storage is a single 512GB SSD.
All VMs are located at a file share on SERVER1, the share is managed by SCVMM1 also.
All computers have plenty of RAM (8G+) and modern processor. The individual I/O benchmark on SERVER1 is typical SSD speed.  Each VHOST has dedicated NIC for VM use. Each
server has two gigabit NICs on same switch for data.
    The step to reproduce:
    1. Create a Windows 7 x86 VM on VHOST1 and install OS on it.  The VM is placed on the SERVER1 file share.  It runs well. no problem, VM performance is good.
    2. In SCVMM console, right clicks the VM and select "Create Clone", the deployment target is on the same SMB share as the source VM.
Actual:  It appears SCVMM clone the VM files with BITS, it is painfully slow. All data travel through network. Estimated 30 minutes for 30GB file!
Expected result: SCVMM uses SMB 3.0 to make the copy. The source and destination are on the same SMB 3.0 share. The transfer of data should be offloaded by SERVER1, instead of reading all data then write it back cross network. (And from unknown reason the
BITS is even much slower than network file copy).
Did I miss anything? Any way to force SCVMM to do such offload copy?  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi acacac1,
    >>Actual:  It appears SCVMM clone the VM files with BITS, it is painfully slow. All data travel through network. Estimated 30 minutes for 30GB file!
Did you try to disable BITS then clone the VM again for test ?
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • CS4 very slow

I am getting lots of problems with CS4, some of which have been covered in separate topics on this forum. In the main, it seems to me that there is a real problem with CS4 processing relatively small amounts of data. The difficulties I am experiencing are:
    1. Text tool very slow. Just typing a few letters sees my CPU usage shoot to 50%. There is a lag of about a second between typing the letters and their appearance on the screen.
    2. Pen tool very slow with significant lag when using the mouse and CPU again shoots to 50%, even for a short line. If I use the tablet (Trust) it sometimes works, but suffers the same lag as the mouse when it does. Most of the time, though, I just get a faint straight line between the start and end point. This morning I got the same straight line symptom on the mouse!
    3. Screen redraw can be painfully slow and blocky, but this fault is really sporadic
    4. There is no apparent difference whether I have GPU active or not. However, I have just had a strange message. When GPU was disabled I restarted CS4 and got the message that there was a problem with the display driver, and PS was therefore disabling GPU enhancements! After that, the pen worked fine, and the mouse too, but then the mouse started losing curves.
I experience none of these problems when I run CS.
My video card driver is up to date. The trust tablet driver is the latest, but I really do not think this is the issue, as the drawing problem also affects the mouse.
System spec - XP with SP3, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, 2GB RAM, nVidia Geforce 7600GT, Program on Raptor 70GB, Scratch on separate 70GB Raptor

I updated the video driver just after I upgraded to CS4, and I have checked today that it is still the latest.
The really weird thing is that the problems are not constant. Most of the time they are there, the rest of the time it's OK. When there is a problem, it's not all of them either.
I have now noticed that my pen works just after I open PS. However, if I change to drawing with the mouse, or change to another tool, then I just get the faint straight lines as in 2 above. I have contacted the maker to see if they can fix the driver.
I noticed that when I ran slide show the temp on the video card went very high, so I have ramped up the fan in case the temp is causing the card to throttle on me. Would this be likely?
However, I still don't understand why I am getting the message that the GPU enhancements are being cut when GPU is not enabled anyway.

The composition I'm working with does have 1 camera, and about 45 small 3D comps built into it. No lights. And all of the footage and data is on the Mac OSX hard drive. Which has tons of space available as you can see. I've played around with the settings in After Effects. But nothing seems to significantly speed things up. Any ideas??

    Hey PJ,
I've been using CS6 since it was released, and while it's got a bunch of great new features, it's basically made Multi Processing unusable unless we're talking about the simplest of comps.   I'm working on my second short using AE as the total animation package, and render times for complicated 3D comps (NOT using ray tracing) have tripled.   MP used to take forever to spool up, but was fast once it got rolling.  Now, disabling MP gives me 3 or 4 times faster rendering, which is still MUCH slower than MP is CS5.5.  SOmething has deflineitly changed for the worse, as i'm using the same machine with the same settings and virtually the same comps.
I acutally just yesterday had two animators quit on my because they couldn't meet their deadlines.
I think After Effects is the hydra of programs.  They kill one feature and two more fill its place.  Unfortuanly we traded functional Multi-processing for falloff lighting and etc...  The puppet tool was it 3 version of after effects before it was stable.  I'm hoping we don't have to wait til CS7 for MP to sort itself out.
I really don't understand the "deal with it" aspect of the posters here.  Surely a functional program that delivers on it's promises is the goal of this forum.  We're not asking it to make us a sandwich.

  • Arch just got painfully slow (for the third time)

arch has slowly been getting slower bit by bit, but I let it slide for a while. started up my laptop today and everything is painfully slow. Pacman takes a couple minutes just to retrieve new update lists, yaourt takes minutes before displaying anything, when I start X/Openbox it's about 5 or 10 minutes before I can even right click open a menu. Yesterday, I was opening up GIMP in a matter of seconds, but it just took about a minute or two to load. Can't imagine this'd be a hardware issue because the laptop is a few months old and hasn't had any problems - other OSes on the drive load fine and all. My / partition is ext3 and has a bit under 1GB of free space - I didn't realize how much space I needed to distribute everything when I formatted everything and I've been meaning to repartition the drive. Is there any chance that could be what's slowing down my computer so much?

  • Macbook Air internet connection painfully slow with ethernet.....

    Hi all
I am currently staying in a serviced apartment and have a Macbook Air that I have had to connect to the in-house LAN through the USB port (someone on here was kind enough to suggest this - I'm a bit of beginner at all this!). The connection is painfully slow (it claims to be connected but pages in safari don't load, iTunes won't load etc.), but the ancient IBM pc on Windows XP conencts through the same at a good speed.
I am also in a wifi environment but my Macbook Air doesn't connect to anything - it keeps timing out (even when it can recognise several unsecured networks). Can anyone advise?

Mine is slow too! The Charter tech was here for four hours today, redoing the entire building. Every other Mac and PC here are up to speed. The new Mac Pro Octo has never been up to speed. I really don't have time to put hours into what I suspect will be a dead end. Apple needs to look into this and help us out.

  • CS5 Flash and Photoshop painfully slow

I recently moved from CS4 Master Suite to CS5 Master Suite. I work with all files on a home based network drive. The CS4 handled most all tasks easily. The CS5 is painfully slow.
Publish Previewing a very small Flash file with no action script and 3 button rollovers takes 3-6 minutes to view. Opening a 1100x730px jpg in Photoshop takes 1-2 minutes and saving it is almost as slow. Ironically, Fireworks opens the same jpg in half the time.
About my set up: the network drive and a desktop PC are plugged into a Linksys G wireless router. The desktop has the same problems as both laptops in really slow Adobe tasks. None of my other programs struggle with network tasks and the CS4 Master Suite handled it fine.
Any clue why CS5 Master Collection would perform basic tasks so much slower than CS4 Master Collection using the same network?

I guess your project is quite complex (filesize for starters, maybe complex vector artwork, lots of keyframes etc.). When you save your project, Flash has to process all the objects and do the actual writing to the disc. What you can do, is break the document into smaller, separate *.fla files. You can export them as *.swf and load them at runtime or export them as *.swc libraries and include them at compile time.

  • Smart sharpen runs painfully slow

    Hello,
On my current system and on my previous system smart sharpen runs PAINFULLY slow. It happened in CS3, CS5, and now with CC it often causes the Photoshop to stop responding and I have to force quit.
    I currently have:
MacBook Pro Dual 2.5 GHz i7
    8 GB 1333 DDR3 Ram
    dual SSDs running Raid 0
    OS 10.8.4
The rest of Photoshop seens to run OK, it's just Smart Sharpen that bogs down I'm usually working on 16 bit files that have gotten to be around 800MB-1.2GB by the time I get to sharpening.
    Any pointers?????
    Thanks

I did a test on my machine to simulate your 60 megapixels image for the square root of 60 megapixel I came up with 7746x7746 Pixels. So I opened a new document  7746x7746 Pixels 16bit ProPhotRGB 300DPI. made it 25.82" square/ I added a spectrum gradient ant the added a lot of noise. my machine is 2Ghz dual 6 core xeons.  It took Smart Sharpen 28 seconds to sharpen the image. Only CPU was being used no disk i/o little RAM user around 5GB for Photoshop all CPU during the 28 seconds used by Photoshop 30% of all 24 Processor threads.

  • Airport reception fine but painfully slow

    Hi,
I've had my macbook pro for about 1 year now and just in the last week the WiFi at home is almost unusable (haven't tried it elsewhere yet). Reception is fine, all bars showing, but loading web pages is painfully slow, with the blue progress bar stalling, loading normally for a bit, then stalling again, and so-on until eventually I get a timeout or it has seemingly stalled indefinitely. Here's what I've done so far to isolate the problem:
    1. Windows PC has perfect internet access through the same wireless router.
    2. Connected macbook directly to DSL modem via ethernet cable, and internet access was perfect.
    3. Deleted the airport connection settings in System Preferences, then re-established the settings - problem didn't go away.
So I think this rules out a broken router and modem and also rules out a problem with the macbook talking to my ISP (and hopefully rules out any ID10T errors on my part). So I suspect the problem lies with the macbook.
I don't know what's changed recently to suddenly cause this problem, some updates maybe?
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
    Thanks

    "...(haven't tried it elsewhere yet)..."
    Do that. Then post back.

  • Acrobat 8 painfully slow on Vista

I've installed Acrobat 8 as part of CS3 Master Collection. The product is painfully slow, regularly taking 3-4 minutes or more to open/view a small file, eating virtually 100% of CPU.
Any suggestions? I see some discussion in the Mac forum about this, but no recent discussions here.
    I'm using;
    * Windows Vista 32-bit
    * Intel Core Duo 2.13Ghz
    * 2 gigs Ram
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Regards,
    Derek Gould

Opening Acrobat (without a document) is slow. Let me clarify; the application opens reasonably quickly, shows me the menu and a blank work area. Then, I see the hourglass and the application is unresponsive for several minutes. I can switch to other applications and they are responsive, it's just the Adobe window that is crawling. The hourglass disappears after 2-3 minutes, and then the application runs and responds normally.
If I open a PDF file, either locally or through a browser, the same thing happens.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone.  I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow.  I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1:  It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1.  For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems.  So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine.  Is that possible?  Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2:  It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets.  A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable.  I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer?  Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
    All the best.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
