DW CS5  "Design View" Problem

I've recently migrated to Dreamweaver CS5 on a new Intel Mac from Dreamweaver CS4 on a G5.
I installed Dreamweaver CS5 for the first time on the new computer and copied my local site folders over from the G5.
I did not initially copy the site definitions file from the G5, or any of DW CS4's preferences.
When I opened one of my sites in DW CS5 on the new box, I noticed the html file could only be viewed in 'code view'- the 'split' snd 'design' buttons were grayed out, and the menu items in the "View" menu- 'view' and 'code and design'- were also grayed out and could not be selected...
I thought "that's strange.."
So to troubleshoot- first, I tried managing the sites properly in CS5 by going to the "Manage Sites.." menu item in the "Site" menu and defining those site folders on the new computer.
That worked fine but didn't cure the problem, so I copied over from the G5 all the DW CS4 prefs I could find, and the DW CS4 site def file, placing all those items in their appropriate locations on the Intel box. That didn't cure it either, so now I'm wondering- when I created those sites originally on the G5 with DW CS4, did I limit their forward compatibility by choosing to format in a particular flavor of html?

When I opened one of my sites in DW CS5 on the new box, I noticed the html file could only be viewed in 'code view'- the 'split' snd 'design' buttons were grayed out, and the menu items in the "View" menu- 'view' and 'code and design'- were also grayed out and could not be selected...
The usual reason is that you've got that file extension (e.g. .html) listed under:
Edit > Preferences > File Types / Editors > Open in Code View (based on its behavior, that should be labelled "Open only in Code View")
If that's the case, removing the file extension from the list usually fixes it.

  • Design View - problems, but does it matter?

    Another design view question - I've looked through other
    posts but not seen anything that's similar.
    (Firstly, can't give a URL as I'm sensibly(?) doing a site
    redesign offline...)
    I've got a page that consists of three columns - each floated
    left, each with nested divs (the nested divs are fixed width).
    In design view, everything was fine with this structure - as
    was preview in browser, and the page validates with DWCS3's
    checker. But adding content to the first of the columns (within a
    nested div) made the next two columns drop below the first in
    design view - although DWCS3 validation and previewing is still
    fine.
    Through judicious deleting etc., I've found that it was a
    floated element in a nested div within the first column, that
    caused the subsequent elements to drop below the first column.
    So my main question is - should I be worried by the design
    view problems, or is It just an inconvenience?
    (And if there's any other obvious problems I'm inviting by
    structuring the page this way, please feel free to (gently) point
    it out...!).
    Thanks, Matt.

    Yes. I'd say more, but I cannot see your page.

  • CS5 Code & Design View Problems?

    In earlier versins of Dreamweaver whenever I as in the deisgn view and I clicked around different pieces of text the cursor would jump to that text section in code view....Now it doesn't seem to work at all? Not sure why it is stuck in code view??

    Not sure why it is stuck in code view??
    Are you viewing a HTML or PHP file?
    If not, you won't get Design View.

  • CS5.5 design view problem

    For some reason all but two elements have disappeared in the design view, leaving just the background.
    In truth I work using the code though there are times it helps having it.
    I've closed and re-opened the programme but nothing changes.
    Many thanks for any advice on what to do.

    That could be caused by a code error, generally DV won't be that far off.
    Run your page through the validator at http://validator.w3.org to see if there aren't some issues in your html that could be causing the oddity in Design View.
    If your code is clean and it's still off by that amount, something to check would be the use of both css and html attributes to control the sizing of tables and other elements. The program can get a little confused and start displaying things all over the place when you do that. I'm not sure if DW5.5 does this (I skipped that version) but DWCS4 certainly did, pretty inconsistently. One way to fix it, even though the code may validate, is to give all control to the css of the page rather than splitting some with the html.

  • DW CS5 "Design view" question

    Let me start by saying I'm very new to using DW and I'm getting all my GoLive sites moved over slowly.
    For some odd reason in Design View, DW CS5 (Win) displays all the text on the page in bold type - making it impossible to tell what is or is not bolded in the actual view. It's very inefficient to have to check everything in the Live View to see what's bold and what isn't that needs to be.
    I've looked though all the settings and options menus I could find, but can't locate where I can fix this glitch. Help would be MOST appreciated!
    THANKS.

    Can you post a link to the code then if it has been something since you started?  It's possible you may have discovered some odd bug with the code on your page but unless you post a link we are just shooting in the dark and can only guess.

  • Why can't I see my text in CS5 design view?

    Since upgrading to CS5, I cannot see any text but plain text as I work in design view.  If I apply a css format to it, it disappears from view, but not from the code and shows up on the browser.  But if I can't see it, and can't select it, I can't lay it out at all.
    I have uploaded 2 different  screen grabs of a simple page with the split view so that you can also  see the code. -one is the regular design layout and then the split  in  Live View so that you can see what I mean. The text in in the code, is visible in Live View, but cannot be seen or selected in Design View. I have a MacBook running Snow Leopard.

    I posted this problem months ago and no one could figure it out. I have been using my old computer with CS in the meantime.  Now I have time to address the issue and want to try again. So far I have  reformatted my drive, reinstalled the operating system, unistalled and reinstalled CS5.

    Is it only the <h> (heading) tags that you can't see in design view? From the screen shot it looks like you can view the <p> (paragraph) tag, right?

  • Dreamweaver CS5 Design view defaults to print style

    I created a separate style sheet for printing, and it works everywhere except one place in Dreamweaver CS5. If I open one of my pages in source code, it looks normal, and I can see where the new code is for printing ...
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/stylemain.css" media="screen, projection" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/print.css" media="print" />
    However, if I switch over to Design view, it shows up in the print style. It does not do this in Live View and it does not do this on the site itself. I'm stumped.

    If the program works normally after restarting, it's unlikely to be a reproducible bug. It could be a computer memory problem or user error. However, the correct place to report bugs (and feature requests) is through the form at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.
    If you experience the same problem again, make sure that View > Style Rendering is set to Screen Media Type. You can also select the media type from the Style Rendering toolbar, which is not displayed by default. To turn it on, select View > Toolbars > Style Rendering.
    You can use the Style Rendering submenu or toolbar to check other media types, including Print. It's possible that you had Print Media Type selected by accident.

  • Dreamweaver CS5 design view background is black, how can I stop this?

    Hey everybody! I have a problem with Dreamweaver CS5's design view only showing a black background. I can create a brand new html document either as a standalone file or as part of a site and it will show a completely black background wheather it's saved or not. This also is a problem with pages that I have already created and with pages created with a Dreamweaver pre-installed template. I can't see anything unless it's not black. It is not affected by background colors either, in fact background colors don't show on anything I make; it's all black! The strange fact about this is that any given page will display just fine in Live View or in any web browser. Thanks in advance, I really need the help on this because I need to use the design view to position elements (which is a lot easier to do than guessing what would look best in code view).

    Have you sorted this problem?
    I have changes from Dreamweaver CS5 to CC and it appears all my existing files have a black background in design mode but when I switch to "live" view it looks like it should and does on the net.
    New files tend to look as they should. Although this change to CC is very recent. It seems like a configuration / preference issue that I can't find an answer for.
    I have a work around at the moment.
    Select view in menu -> visual aids -> CSS layout backgrounds
    This makes all the CSS areas different colours, but you can see black text and items.
    Selecting "LIVE" allows you to see what it is actually like.

  • CS5 Design View

    Can anybody explain why so many elements that were displaying fine in CS4 now dissapear in CS5. For example h tags and Spry accordions?

    Hi Murray
    These are the elements that do not display in Design view but will in Live View.
    On the main accordion menu it's the h5 Tags:
    <div class="AccordionPanel">
              <div class="AccordionPanelTab style1">
                <h5>INDEX (close tabs)</h5>
              </div>
    The h5 and h2 Tags within:
    <div id="mainContent">
        <div id="Audiology">
    <h5>Consultants by speciality</h5>
          <h2>Audiology</h2>
    The strong Tag in Accordion2
    <div id="Accordion2" class="Accordion">
              <div class="AccordionPanel">
                <div class="AccordionPanelTab">
                <strong>Click consultants tab for clinic details/profile</strong></div>
    It seems that the h Tags and strong Tag are a problem is this correct?

  • CS5 Design View: local page + images on server - images don't display

    I've recently upgraded to DW CS5. I sometimes have occasion to design pages containing images that are on the server.
    In DW8, images on the server would display in Design View.
    In DW CS5, images on the server display a broken image icon in Design View.
    Yes, I know I can switch to Live View, but I'd rather not, as I find Live View very difficult to edit in (if at all; I can somewhat edit in the code, but what's the point?). I'd far rather be able to see the images as I'm writing the page in Design View.
    Am I missing some setting somewhere, or is this the way it is?

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    Diane Vigil wrote:

    Thanks so much for this. Really appreciated.
    Used to be under the Commands menu long ago. Obviously relocated to the View menu.
    That means that Adobe's own online Help docs for CS5 are incorrect.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/dreamweaver/cs/using/WSc78c5058ca073340dcda9110b1f693f21-7cc1a .html
    Note: When inserting images it’s also possible to use an absolute path to an image that resides on a remote server (i.e., an image that is not available on the local hard drive). If you experience performance problems while working, however, you might want to disable viewing the image in Design view by deselecting Commands > Display External Files.

  • Design view problem, live view fine

    I'm having a design view issue in Dreamweaver CS4. If you look at the images here:
    http://www.honestcontractors.net/temp/index.html
    You can see that design view (top image) cuts off the bottom CSS and the right area. But everything looks just fine in live view (lower image). Anyone have any ideas why this is going on?
    Thanks!

    Me too!  I also have upgraded from DW8 to CS5 and have this problem and it is driving me crazy.  I have run my pages through the W3C validator and they passed, so I know there is nothing wrong with my code.  But the XHTML pages are all displaying flush left in Design View, and intermittently so are some of the HTML pages.  They display fine in Live View, but of course, you can't do any editing in Live View.  This to me disables one of the key features of Dreamweaver since it was launched by Macromedia years ago -- the ability to switch seamlessly back and forth between Code View and Design View!  I've been working with it like this for several years and this has thrown a monkey wrench into my workflow and I'm really depressed.  The Adobe phone tech in India was trying to tell me it was my fault!  I showed him that the pages passed the W3C validator test and displays just fine in Firefox and Safari when uploaded to the server.
    Meanwhile, there are other bugs the Adobe phone tech basically threw up his hands about: browser preview works with Safari but not Firefox (it just doesn't open at all, nothing happens).  Also, sometimes after interacting with the server, the dialog box doesn't close on its own, so you go to open a file a minute or two later, and you are told that "Dreamweaver is currently interacting with a server."  Since the dialog box is hidden, this has also been driving me nuts for the past week until I realized what the cause was.
    I am SO frustrated right now.  This is a very, very expensive program, and it should be working better than DW8 not lacking key features.  Any other suggestions?  And what's with Adobe's current phone techs?  I've talked with 3 of them about this issue.  The first one spoke fractured English, the second one seemed competent to a point, the third one had decent language skills but I felt as if I had better reasoning skills and knew more than he did -- and he was the one who punted and said "Must be the fault of your design," even though he could see my screens and I showed him that the design passed validation.
    By the way Tech # 2 had me delete the configuration files and preferences and uninstall and reinstall DW CS5 to no avail.  And I'm running the latest update of Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini purchased in November 2009.

  • Design View Problems

    Hello,
    I have downloaded the Dreamweaver 8 and I’m in the
    process of taking some online tutorials to improve my almost
    non-existent skills. I must have changed something during my
    careless exploration on the application. The problems I am having
    all involved the design view.
    1. If I create a layer in the lower part of the page it
    automatically goes to the top left hand corner but when I view it
    in a browser it is still exactly where I placed it in design view.
    2. If I change text using a css styles it will show the
    changes in the browser view but not in design view.
    3. I can change the position of a layer if I change the HTML
    code but I do not get a handle when I mouse over the top left
    corner of the layer. When I change the layer position in the code
    it still does not move from the top left corner in design view but
    it does change in browser view.( I have to change the position in
    the code because when I click the layer the only layer properties
    that are available Class and layer)
    4. Last but far from least the only page properties that are
    available to me are Appearance, Title/Encoding, and Tracing Image
    This is the trial version of Dreamweaver 8 and the same
    downloaded trial works great on my laptop. Both machines are XP
    home addition with SP2.
    I have been working on the issue for about a week. (Please
    don’t laugh) I have removed and reinstalled the
    application...twice.
    Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated

  • Design view problems in MX

    Hi everyone,
    I'm quite new to dreamweaver so I apologise if my question is
    a bit stupid. I was using MX on my PC and have recently bought a
    mac and got the mac version of MX. I'm now using on my mac the same
    site files that I wrote on my PC. Problem is now the design view is
    all messed up. When i preview the site in my browser it looks fine
    but in the design view it looks completely different with the
    headers all over the place. I am still able to work on the website
    but i have to keep checking things in my browser rather than
    accurately seeing how the page will look using the design view.
    Does anyone know the reason for this? I'd really appreciate
    some help.
    Thanks so much!

    Are you using MX or MX2004? There is a difference. MX2004 was
    moderately
    stupid about rendering CSS layouts, while MX was completely
    imbecilic about
    the same.
    Maybe a good place to start would be to post a link to the
    page.
    And by the way, any given page should look exactly the same
    in the Design
    view of Mac/PC DW.

  • Design View Problems in Dreamweaver CS3

    Hello folks,
    I've been having design view issues in Dreamweaver CS3 on my
    Windows XP 2002 SP2 computer. When placing library items in tables,
    the library item will disappear from design view, and sometimes
    columns or rows in disappear as well. The code remains unaffected
    and the pages appear okay in all browsers, but not having preview
    working correctly is definitely a disadvantage. Has anyone else
    experienced this problem and, if so, do you know of any fixes?
    Many thanks!

    This is nearly diagnostic for an improperly made Library
    item.
    Do your Library items contain <html>, <head>, or
    <body> tags? Do they
    contain CSS rules?
    If not, can you show us a page that is doing this for you?

    I have had ongoing problems using nested div tags to layout
    my page. The page displays correct in browser but does not display
    properly in Dreamweaver Design View. Highlighting the CSS id in
