DW won't highlight properly in design view

When working in design view I can't get photos to highlight or divs to activate quickly. It's taking me twice as long to work because in order to get the elements active my work around is to put it in inspect mode then select element, take it back out and then it is hit or miss whether or not the handle bars or activation boxes light up. Sometimes it takes me 5 or 6 try's. If anyone knows a solution I would greatly appreciate help.
Thank you,
F

You click anywhere in design view and then look at the bottom left screen and you will see something like this:
Now if you click on <p>, your paragraph will be highlighted.  If you click on <section> your entire contents of section will be highlighted.  Hope this gives you the idea.
This is only possible in Design View.  Code view will not help you here.  Split view might be another option to try it.
Good luck.

  • MX won't display CSS in Design View

I built a site for a client using CSS for the layout. The
client wants to do her own updates with Dreamweaver MX. We've found
that the layout does not show in Design View, so she's doing minor
updates in code view (which she's comfortable with).
A secod site she manages was done with tables and displays
    properly in Design View.
Can I assume that the problem is just that MX does not
display CSS layout? She needs an answer so she can ask her boss to
spend the money for an upgrade.

    Yes .. I agree. :)
However .. I would still recommend Contribute for a
    non-webpro.

  • .php files won't show up in design view?

    Hi there,
I'm a pretty experienced dreamweaver user, using for 3 years,
but this is baffling me. I've been using PHP includes for my
content for years, but all of a sudden when I covert my .html files
to .php files I cannot view in design view, only code view?
Now, if I convert them back to .html it works just fine...
Anyone know how to fix this? Here's a screenshot btw:

Not a good answer, and no explanation:
I have noticed this too. But if you create a brand new doc
    and select
the php option in the window that asks which kind you want,
    then copy
and paste the essential code into it, it'll work. Probably
    completely
wrong, but it's as if DW "remember" a file a html once that's
    the file
you selected, regardless of which extension you eventually
    give it....
    something like that...
That won't work either, if I click new .php file it still
wont let me view it in design view..

I would like to change the "Code view" highlight color from it's default to something more contrasty ... so while using "Split view" - when I select an element in "Design View" the corresponding code in "Code view" would be easier to find ...
Anyone knows how to customize this setting wit DW CS5??
    Thanks!

DW Code View uses the Selection colors defined for your Operating System.
If you don't know how to change that, which OS and version are you using?

  • CSS Styles not displayed properly in design view - SOLVED (not 'Display Styles')

For several weeks, I've been troubleshooting the issue of CSS
and inline styles not being displayed properly when in Dreamweaver
CS3 design view, and checking in to the forums occassionally to see
if there was a solution other than making sure "Display Styles" was
selected under View -> Style Rendering (it was, and still
    nothing would display properly!).
After much frustration, I may have found the solution to
those still experiencing the issue even after "Display Styles" is
appropriately checked. I went in to my master template for the
site, and found an erroneous <br> tag after the <link
href> for the stylesheet, which I must have inadvertantly
inserted when I added the code for the site's favicon. (You get so
used to Shift-Enter in layout mode, it's almost automatic,
regardless of what pane your in.) I can't believe I missed this
before! Deleting the erroneous tag cleaned up the whole
    site.

I had the same thing happen to me. After hours of trouble
shooting I found a bit of inappropriate code left in the HTML.
Cleaned that up and all is good. Seems like it is often something
so simple. Guess that is why it is so maddening when i can't figure
    it out!

  • How do i get two spry tabbed panels to render properly in design view?

I have inserted two spry tabbed panels into a simple web page.  The second panel appears off to the side of my design view window.  When i preview it in a browser it comes out fine but i can't seem to get the design view the same.  If i insert new paragraphs the tabbed panels look okay in the design view, but when viewing in the browser theres waaay to much space between them.  Any suggestions?

Without seeing your page, not much to suggest other than making sure your code is valid.  DW is sensitive to coding errors that some browsers will overlook.

  • DW8:  image won't display in Design View

    Folks:
DW8 on MacOS 10.4.8 (fully updated) on Intel iMac.
What would keep an image from displaying in DW Design View?
What are the causes of the grey box with the superimposed "X"? Is
there any diagnostic output that might help? Is the grey box and
"X" substituted by DW8 for an invalid or un-drawable graphic, or is
    this done by the OS?
    The problem:
    I've got a 1912 x 1481 graphic, a geographic map, in AI that
I'm trying to use as an ordinary web image, but DW won't display it
in Design View. Instead all I see is a big grey box and "X". For
test purposes, I'm starting from a new "Basic" HTML web page and
all I'm doing is inserting this one image. I need to get this
working so I can draw hotspots on this graphic to make it
    "clickable" .
    Here's what I've tried:
o Triple-checking that the inserted image reference is
correct. Yes, the image file is correctly linked. With the image
selected, the inspector shows a tiny but recognizable miniature of
the expected image. Further, when the page and the image are
uploaded to the web server and I look at it via a browser, the
expected image is _always correctly displayed.
o Exporting the graphic "for the web" from AI as both a GIF
and a medium-quality JPG. Neither of these are displayed in Design
View; both are served up correctly after being uploaded
o I found a larger JPG on a different site I'm managing. This
always displays as expected in both DW Design View and when served
up. I substituted the failing map JPG image. The result: A grey
    box.
o Checking the map images: The JPG and GIF versions seem to
be visible in all environments (image readers, browsers, etc.) I've
    checked _except_ DW8 Design View.
o Checked on another system. I made the failing image
available to a very helpful ACE, who performed a similar
experiment. It worked fine for him. I used his exact HTML and
directory structure -- and it failed for me. Grey box with "X".
It seems to me that I've checked most of the obvious
possibilities. Now it is time to check the less obvious ones.
    Suggestions are very welcome!
    Thanks,
    Henry

    Randy:
    Thanks for your response.
This is a virtual memory system, so -- in theory-- it should
accommodate anything that will fit on the hard drive, more or less,
if I'm wiling to wait the hours (days?) it will take to swap on and
off the disk. That assumes DW8 takes advantage of the capability.
    It may not.
"Larger"? The JPG image I compared to is 1692 x 2160 pixels,
but weighs slightly less, 289K bytes. I'm losing track of all my
test images that fail, but a representative one is 1912 x 1481
pixels and weighs 332Kb on the disk. "Roughly comparable" might be
a better description. The point is still reasonable: DW8 does
handle images of this size on my system.
One issue that occurred to me recently is that I may have
caused some grief by monkeying with the "Save for web" settings at
the Illy export. Perhaps I asked for some configuration that's
normal for Illy to export --or it would have warned me, I hope--
but too strange for DW to grok. DW should complain more
informatively than painting a gray box and "X" when that happens, I
    would think.

  • Highlighting in Design View the selected code in Code View

I'm a complete newbie to DW so forgive the probable obvious question. I've loaded up a complete site template that was created outside of Dreamweaver in order to modify it for use elsewhere.
I want to be able to select chunks of code in the code view, mainly <DIV>'s and have them highlighted in the design view, just imagine the "Inspect" functionality, but in reverse.
Is this something that's already possible that I just haven't found?
    Thanks In Advance
    Andrew

A couple of options to consider:
Turn off your CSS.  View > Style Rendering > un-tick display styles.
You'll see an unstyled page you can work with.
Read about Design Time Style Sheets (F1 help).  DT style sheets are simplified css files that you can use while you edit your site.
DT style sheets have no effect when you preview in browsers.

  • Snippet adds extra space in design view

    Hi All,
I've created a supercript snippet that is set to wrap with
design view preview (just sup tags before and after the selection).
If I select the text to apply the snippet in design view then
dreamweaver adds an extra space in front of the 'after' block, it
doesn't if I select the text in code view.
Does anyone know a way to make this work properly in design
view as having to do it in code view all the time is just
    really annoying?
    Cheers,
    Tosh

I cannot confirm this on my Mac or PC.

  • Design View Refresh doesn't work on mac CC

Hi Y'all, I'm having horrible trouble with Dreamweaver CC on mac, (10.8) quad core, 32GB RAM...
when highlighting something in design view, it does not highlight the respective code anymore like the older versions used to.
and the design view refresh does not work at all.
I've completely uninstalled, reinstalled, checked all system fonts for problems, I can't get this problem fixed, and I'm going to have to ditch CC and go back to old version, to be able to work!
here's a video showing the problem I am having:
    http://youtu.be/HHSpyc2Icrw
thanks in advance for any help!

I've just watched your video, and it's clear that you're having problems. The only obvious difference between your setup and mine is that you are using horizontal split view. So, I've just tested on my MacBook Air. Refresh and highlighting work just fine in both horizontal and vertical split view.
I realize that saying "well it's OK here" isn't much help, but your problems seem to have some other cause than simply having updated to the latest version of Dreamweaver CC.
Hopefully an Adobe staff member can intervene and draw your problem to the attention of an engineer. It would be useful to know if this happens on all pages, and all sites, or if there's something special about your current setup.

    Hi Didier,
Sorry, intermittent problem is not very descriptive ! What I actually meant is that some of my applications have the problem while others dont. Once the problem exists, it always does regardless of restarting JDeveloper.
Starting JDeveloper using the console provided similar error message to outputting the JSP visual editor to the log file :
SEVERE: Element End name:head does not match start name:script
    04-Dec-2009 17:28:38 oracle.adfinternal.view.faces.io.HtmlResponseWriter endElem
    ent
SEVERE: Element End name:html does not match start name:div
Reading other posts, problems seemed to stem from errors within the faces-config or web.xml files so I compared them between apps displaying pages correctly and ones that weren't. I found a difference in the filter-mapping section of the web.xml. Changing the entries to match the applications that displayed correctly has worked !!
The entries for the apps that didn't display correctly :
        <filter-mapping>
            <filter-name>adfFaces</filter-name>
            <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>

            <url-pattern>*.jspx</url-pattern>
</filter-mapping>Somehow the filter-mapping entries for the adfFaces and adfBindings filter got all screwed ? Strange as the application has always worked fine, the only (obvious) problem has been the jspx pages not rendering properly in design view.
Once updating the web.xml with the correct value for these two entries, the pages are displayed correctly :)
While I don't like blindly making changes like this to the web.xml - the application still seems to function !

  • Design View is Blank in CS5.5

Hello, I have had problems with design view since upgrading from CS3 to CS5.5. In fact, it has never worked for me. Design View is completly white.
    I'm on a Mac, running OS X 10.7.3.
This isn't an issue with bad code, it's all the time. I can start a new document, type one word inside the body in code view and switch to design view and nothing is there. If I click in the white space on design view, I can type there and it will show when I go back to code view, but it won't show anything in design view while I'm typing.
This is not an issue with the "Head Content" covering everything up. I can toggle that on and off. I can also turn the rulers on and off and they show. But nothing on the page I'm working on will show.
    Also, "Live View" works fine.
    Any ideas? I'm totally stumped.
    Thanks!

  • Live view different from design view

    Hi folks,
Does anyone know why, in dreamweaver, there is a difference between the site design in Design View and what you see in live view; and how should oneapproach this difference?
    Thanks.

Design View was coded a LONG time ago and Adobe hasn't really changed it much. It is very useful for my workflow, which is to work in Split view and jump back and forth between the Design view pane and the Code View pane. I know right off the bat that I won't see everything. Design View will never show me the newer CSS3 attributes, like shadow, gradients and so on. But it gives me a "rough" analog to work with while I'm doing general layout. Things like, "Am I breaking up the text enough to keep people on my web page?" "Do I have this typeface too small?" "Is the picture I just put in there positioned correctly?"
Also, be forewarned, "Live" view is Webkit (an Open Source browser) so it will accurately portray Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari. It will not accurately show issues with Firefox and Internet Exploiter. So, before you launch your website, do a check in all of the major browsers.

For over a year I have been opening files directly from two separate servers (one is testing, the other is live) and the files previewed fine in design view. One day design view stopped working for asp files on both servers and I do not know what caused this. HTML files still preview fine.
On the live server, design view is not recognizing the included header, any of the css, or the images when I open .asp files. When I paste the include into the main document I can get the css to work by removing the initial '/' character from the path leading me to believe this is a pathing issue. I do not want to change my pathing in the files as the site is rendering properly in the browser and there is not a inital '/' character in the includes original path to remove anyway.
When I open a .asp file from the test sever, the included file is showing in design view but again I have to change the pathing to the css in order for it to render properly in design view. It is rendering properly in the browser.
The loss of design view is making my styleing very challenging. I think I need to tell dreamweaver where the root of the testing and live server are. I'm not sure is this is the solution and if it is I am not sure how to implement it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Paul

Thanks Nancy...   Here is what I found. Maybe you (or someone could shed some light on this for me).
Here is what is placed in all of my documents:
    <!--#include virtual="/includes/topNav/topNav_housing.asp"----------->
The home page that displayed properly in Dreamweaver looked like this:
    <!--#include virtual="/includes/topNav/topNav_home.asp"-->
Removing all but two of the dashes as the end of the code snippet fixed the problem and the Header started to disply in Design view.   I am not a programmer, and my HTML/CSS knowledge is self taught, but this code has been in place from a previous designer for years.  Does it make a difference?  What could have changed?   I have thousands of these pieces in my site, I guess I need to fix them all.....

  • D8 Design view problem or setting

Hi, I think I may have unknowingly adjusted a setting or
preference for the display of design view. The thing is that while
I was working on a form page the design view display changed from
readable to some sort of garbled rendition of the page. I
understand this could be a problem with my code except that I have
the design view issue on lots of pages now…the included Page
Designs(CSS) templates don’t view properly in design view.
Attached is a screen capture, and the code used, of a basic new
html document to which I add a layer…the layer views as a
long narrow rectangular box and supposedly I should be able to
click on it and resize the layer box…but I can’t. In
these situations design view is unusable.
    Please help educate me.
    Thanks,
    Greg
Code is attached for screen capture...btw, not my code all
    autogenerated by Dreamweaver.
