DWG files opened into Illustrator

Hello all,
I did a file open of a .dwg file into Illustrator. It was a simple drawing of a flat view of a furnished room. I wanted to select the rounded rectangle that represented the *pillow* on the *bed* and fill it with a gradient, or maybe a pattern fill. I couldn't. The rounded rectangle was not a rounded rectangle. It was a series of open paths: 4 straight segments for the sides, and 4 curved open paths for the rounded corners.
Now, I rarely work on AutoCad generated files. I found that I resorted to using the Join command 8 times to turn the 8 open paths into 1 joined closed path.
I thought to use the LivePaint feature, but it was grayed-out.
I assume there must be a better way to open the .dwg file into Illy and have it render shapes better than this! Or is it a limitation of .dwg being translated to .ai?
What should I know that I don't?
Many thanks,
Mike Witherell in Maryland

Oh goodness. I see this thread, now:

  • Why can't I open DWG files in Adobe Illustrator CS6?

Why can't I open DWG files in Adobe Illustrator CS6?  I recently upgraded to Mac OS X Mountain Lion & got a new Mac Pro.  Then I signed up for the Creative Cloud.  Now I cannot open any DWG files in Illustrator.  Why?

No, not really.  I do get a few error messages when I start up now, but I had transferred everything from my old computer, so figured it was a glitch. The error message was a dialogue box like the others, only it said this:
"Insecure start-up item disabled. Library/Startup Items/.DS_Store/ has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings."
"Insecure start-up item disabled. Library/Startup Items/ES1000Service/ has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings."
"Insecure start-up item disabled. Library/Startup Items/Parallels/ has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings."
I know for sure we have not used Parallels in the past 2 years that I have been here.
As for the other two star-tup items, I am not entirely sure what thier purpose is.
Would any of these have anything to do with it?

  • Dwg files opening blank in CS4

I have two .dwg files that were emailed to me and are opening up as a blank screen in AI CS4.  I've never had a problem opening .dwg files before.  They are both drawings produced in ProE.  Any thoughts/suggestions on how I can get these files to open properly?

CAD files are done in sheets each sheet is like a revised drawing with additions and deletions they retain al the sheets and all he underlying work and paths etc. To dumb it down they delete all the sheets except the current one they save it as a copy s they retain the working drawing.
That way you only get what is current and nothing else, which is what you need.
That makes for a small and more stable file.
They can also save the file in an older version like 2002.
If that dies not work ask them to export it as an eps.

Ok, it's quite absurd that there's no other workaround for now. I always used Adobe for webdesign, but I think it's time now to go and use some different applications, like Sketch and Macaw. I'm really curious about the last one.
    Thanks anyway for the help:)

  • InDesign files opening in Illustrator by default

All my InDesign files are now opening in Illustrator by default. The icons have even changed to illustrator icons even though the extension is INDD. I have right-clicked and browsed for the InDesign program, but I can't get it to stick so that it is an option in the menu that I can select. What did I do and how can I fix it? Thanks for your help.

Are you in the "Get Info" Menu? If you are, you should see the following:
In the "Open with:" window either choose InDesign or see below:
Select "Other..." and scroll for InDesign. After selecting ID, click "Change All..." below to make future InDesign documents open automatically in InDesign.
    Hope this works.

  • How to design plug-in which extract information from file opened in illustrator

    Hi Everyone,
I want to design a plug-in in adobe illustrator which could extract information from pdf file which is opened in illustrator.
Can anyone give me direction from where could I start.??
    Thanks in advance.

This is very difficult in any API because there are no tables in PDF.
If the table is at a known exact location you would extract text from each known cell location
If you have to discover tables you need to decide how to recognise them: perhaps by looking for drawn lines and analysing their relationship to see if they form a grid; then use the positions derived to get the text from the table.

  • High Cpu Usage when file open in Illustrator 9

Hey guys, have had a few problems lately when an EPS or AI file is open in Illustrator 9.0 cpu usage sits between 50 - 100% and clicking around the program is in general very sluggish. All boxes with problems run Windows 2000 SP4. These arn't slow machines either, about 3GHZ dual core, 1GB ram. I know Illustrator 9 is old but it's being used in a business environment so upgrading is not really an option. Thanks in advance for any help.

By "lately" do you mean this is something that started happening recently?
If so, can you remember any changes (updates, service packs, other software, etc.) you might have made to your boxes recently?
    Are you updated to 9.0.2?
If not, it's worth doing, and here are the pertinent links:

  • Loading Color exchange files (.ase) into illustrator

    In Applescript:
I want to load a swatch library exported from InDesign as .ase file and want to load it in Illustrator CS3, because I want to use the same swatch definitions in both applications.
I found that the documentation states that you can open such a file as a swatch library file by setting the open options as to as->swatch library. I tried many combinations but I can't get it working.
Has anybody tried and succeeded to make it work. Thanks for your help.

  • Default open dwg files in Illustrator CS6

I frequently use dwg files in Adobe Illustrator, so I set dwg files default program to Illustrator CS5.
We recently upgraded to CS6 and when I opened it, it didn’t update the default program. I tried using the “open with” menu. Illustrator CS6 doesn’t show as one of the options, so I browsed for it, selected it, clicked ok. The dialog box closed, but CS6 wasn’t added to the menu. I received the same results using “Associate a file type with a program” in the Control panel.
Any ideas how to make Illustrator my default program for dwg files?
    Thanks

It is not related to Creative cloud but a OS specific issue. You didn't mentioned the OS but I pressume it is Windows because we have seen this on Windows.
Open the Control Panel from the Start menu.
Mine is set in top right to 'View by' Category. I clicked on Programs (green link).
Under Default Programs I clicked on the blue link for 'Make a file type always open in a specific program'.
Wait for 'Loading..'. to finish. Make sure the list is sorted by Name and scroll down to '.dwg'. Select it and click the button for 'Change program...'.
Do no see Firworks listed in the Recommended Programs, so click on the small triangle to the right of Other Programs. Select Fireworks and click the OK button.
Wait for the list to reload and confirm the association changed.
    Hope this helps !!

  • Camera Raw Files won't open into Photoshop CC

I'm having intermittent problems with Camera Raw and/or Photoshop CC.  Here's my flow...
    1.  Open Adobe Bridge and double click on the NEF file I want.
    2.  File opens into Camera Raw
    3.  I make adjustments
    4.  I click on Open Object (whether or not smart object is checked in preferences)
    5.  Nothing happens...it just goes back to the thumbnail in Adobe Bridge
My Camera Raw preferences are set:  "Automatically open JPEGs with settings"
    Camera Raw Version 8.2.0.94
    Adobe Bridge Version 5.0.2.4
    Photoshop CC Version 14.1.2 x64
    Nikon D7100
Does anybody know how to rectify this?  I'd appreciate the help!  I'm sure it's probably something simple I'm overlooking, but sometimes it seems to work...that's what makes me wonder.

Yes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4.  I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.

  • Placing a png logo created in Fireworks cs5 into Illustrator cs5

I am trying toplace a logo into illustrator. When I do it looks fine but any kind of scakeing makes it look all pixelated. I am trying to scale it down to fit onto a business card. When I do it looks just alright while the second logo (mostly test) looks great and completly scaleable. Is the somehting i'm doing wrong. I have tried copy and paste, p[lacing and opening into illustrator. I have tried wih all file formats and theyall do the same. My friend is asking for a ESP file which I can give but I want to make sure it is going to come out right before taking it to her printers. PLease help! Mahalo

I use FW for web design. But if my clients want a logo they can also put onto business card I should just create the logo in AI alltogether?
One of the longstanding "unwritten laws" of designing identity graphics (and illustration in general): Design for print first (and AI is not the only program for this); then re-purpose for web. Doing it the other way around inevitably leads to the kinds of problems you are having, and many more.
Beginners often get away with this at first with an unsuspecting client, but eventually the client finds out what he's got himself into when he encouters the need to deploy his identity graphics with the versatility that should have been built into them in the first place.
Similarly, it is far, far better to create identitiy graphics as efficiently-drawn vector graphics. You can always rasterize a vector graphic to any size needed. Creating raster images just because you are accustomed to raster "painting" and then assuming you can later automatically "convert" it to scaleable vector graphics with an autotrace feature is pure folly. Far too many beginners are deluded by this myth.
...my clients want a logo they can also put onto business card... [emphasis mine]
A true logo is the permanent, primary cornerstone of a business's or a product's identity. Design considerations aside, and speaking only to technical repro necessity:
Logos are designed and their master files built so as to technically accommodate all eventual uses that can be anticipated. Business cards and letterhead is just the no-brainer start. The client is soon going to need a storefront sign. He'll also need to advertise. Will your "logo" work when it has to be included in a full-color magazine ad? A single-color newspaper ad?  Screen printed as a spot-color T-shirt imprint? Etched onto a giveaway pen? Embroidered onto a polo shirt? Embossed into a metal plate?
Fireworks is a fine program--for its purpose. Because of its targeted purpose, it is chock-full of features and effects that can be applied to vector paths, but which would nonetheless have to be rasterized for print. Many of those effects don't even correspond to a counterpart in PostScript programs. So you end up having to resort to rasterization and get yourself (or someone else who has to try to incorporate your graphics) into all kinds of trouble. And as we've already seen, logo design is about alot more than just print.
The same thing is true of Illustrator. Everything you draw in Illustrator can be rendered by a PostScript imagesetter. But that certainly doesn't mean that everything you draw in Illustrator is advisable for use in a proper logo.
A good logo designer always has in mind what downstream compromises he is making when he decides to include each and every element of the design--even treatments as "simple," for example, as an ordinary grad fill. Can a grad fill be rendered by cutting the logo out of plastic so as to comply with the signage specifications of a shopping mall? Such questions lead the designer to ask himself other questions: Is this design so weak that I have resorted to a stupid grad fill in an attempt to give it "uniqueness"? If so, it's time to start over.
So it's not a simple matter of which program to use. It's more a matter of which features to use. And that can be as problematic in Illustrator as in Fireworks. Moreover, though, it's about what quality logo design really is. It's alot more than just making something "look neat" on a monitor.

  • How do I export a .dwg file so the Search/Find function can be used on it?

I have some .dwg files that my co-worker exported to PDF. It is crucial for me to have the ability to use the search or "Find" function in Reader. There are 11 different .dwg files exported into an 11 page PDF, but some of the were exported with different properties. I can search on 4 of them, but the other 7 are unsearchable. I believe my co-worker user Autodesk TrueView to export the .dwg files to PDF. So my question is what program I should use (I believe that TrueView is capable of what I am trying to do, but I'm not sure) and how should I set up the the settings before I export it to PDF. Thanks.

You need to contact Autodesk, almost no one here is likely to be familiar with what Autodesk can or cannot do.
