Dwm.exe help

I have a satellite m305-s4910.  Recently I had an issue with the pc not loading furthur than a black screen.  I have corrected that problem and have gotten back to the original problems.  When the pc turns on I get a message about not being able to locate the file C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\dwm.exe.  Any ideas how to fix this problem.  I am afraid I have a virus but am not sure which one or how to decided what it is and how to get rid of it.  Nothing shows up in AVG scans but running PC cleaup kit I get a lot of registry errors.  I'm not sure if that's related.  Also I feel like I have been using more RAM than I should be.  Around like 60-70 percent when I'm not even touching the computer.  The windows sidebar will load up but you can't see any of the gadgets.  Yesterday my built in mouse decided to quit working.  I put in a usb portable mouse and it worked fine.  Any suggestions on what I should do?  Thank you in advance!

Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) is the compositing window manager that gives you all those pretty effects in Windows Vista: Transparent windows, live taskbar thumbnails and such.
Try running the windows repair wizard to see if that fixes it, if not then you may have to restore with your recovery discs.
If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press ENTER. (If Repair your computer is not listed as an option, then your computer does not include Startup Repair as a preinstalled recovery option.)
Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.
Select a user name and enter the password, and then click OK.
On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem and, if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

I'll assume you have either Windows Vista or Windows 7.
It's easy to prevent the message during Windows startup. But we're dealing with a system file. There may be other problems. Best to run a file check (sfc /scannow at an elevated command prompt) first.

  • Dwm.exe starts consuming lots of CPU when machine is idle

Since doing a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro RTM x64 English on my Sony Vaio Z21 laptop, I've been bothered by a sudden increase in fan noise whenever I leave the machine idle for a while and the displays are turned off. Finally decided to try and get to
the bottom of it today, so I ran the Performance Recorder with the CPU usage profile enabled and brought up the relevant graphs in Performance Analyzer. See the below screen shot for the results.
I started the trace and then left the machine alone for a while to trigger the idle behavior. It's pretty clear that Dwm.exe is the main culprit. As to why this process would find anything useful to do when all the displays are turned off is beyond me. Also
Outlook.exe sees a significant increase of CPU usage during the same time period. Whether these two are somehow related, I have no clue. Please note that I've disabled all other processes in the graph for clarity; no other processes showed any visible increase
    during the trace.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Daniel Stolt, Perceptible, http://www.perceptible.net

I'm seeing similar characteristics as some others in this thread:
    - The issue occurs when the system is idle AND the power management puts my displays on standby.
    - Modifying my power management settings so that the display is NEVER put on standby causes the issue to go away.  (The system will not show unusual CPU activity even after sitting idle for some time.)
    - When the issue occurs, dwm.exe shows some CPU activity.  dwm.exe's activity averages around 25%.  Several other applications show CPU activity as well.  Each individual application's activity averages less than 25% (so dwm.exe's activity
is the most visible during this issue), but the total CPU activity adds up to around 60-75%.  The unusual CPU activity ceases when the monitor wakes up from standby.
Do others participating in this thread observe that the issue goes away if they modify their power management settings so that their monitor is never allowed to go to standby?  I understand that this isn't a viable "solution" for most people,
but I'd like to know if everyone else shares that same observation.
I have a question (and appreciation!) for the persons genuinely contributing to this thread:  Do you see any unusual CPU activity occur in any other applications when this issue occurs?  For example, do you see a small amount of activity in explorer.exe?
I ask this because I've watched the CPU graphs for several individual processes which happen to be running on my system.  (I've been leaving several process property windows open in Process Explorer to monitor individual process performance.  It's
a kludgy method but it works.)  Processes such as skype.exe, steam.exe, procmon.exe (Process Monitor), and taskmgr.exe each nibble at the CPU when the problem occurs.  The effect is subtle but noticeable.  The CPU nibbling for these applications
disappears when the monitor wakes-up from standby.
I've also noticed that there is slightly less overall CPU consumption if all application windows are minimized when the issue occurs.  In the case of steam.exe, the unusual CPU consumption all but disappears when it is minimized.
I believe Harri Kaimio's post has been the closest thing I've seen posted to a technical explanation for the issue.  It seems (?) that certain applications are attempting to draw something, but they are somehow blocked or otherwise unable to do so when
the monitor is on standby.  dwm.exe plays a part in drawing, so it shows activity when this occurs.  However, instead of giving up, the applications seem to go nuts and attempt the (same?) thing frequently, thereby generating CPU activity.*
*Please understand that these are guesses -- if someone can correct me with more technical details or procedures which would help disprove my guesses, please do show me where these guesses are wrong!  I'd love to work towards a solid explanation.
    A few more tidbits:
    - I do not run Logitech's SetPoint.exe.
    - I'm experiencing this on a desktop system.  My display adapters are:  AMD/Radeon HD 7800 series, and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000.
    - Running Windows 7.
    - I am incredibly pleased that not a single person has suggested "defragmenting" in this entire thread.  :)

  • AppLocker prevents DWM.exe running at log off

    Hi All,
We are testing Windows 8.1 for release at our site, and have come across an AppLocker issue with DWM.exe being denied access to run at log off - this results in a black screen whenever a users chooses to log off of a PC and nobody being able to logon again
    until the PC is restarted.
Event Logs on the PC indicate this as Event ID 8004 under "Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\AppLocker\EXE and DLL" and specifically states that AppLocker is preventing it. DWM.exe continuously tries to run and keeps logging errors
for a period of time before giving up.
    Applocker is configured as:
    Executeable Rules:
    DOMAIN\Domain Users - Signed by O=MICROSOFT CORPORATION, L=REDMOND, S=WASHINGTON, C=US
DOMAIN\Staff - Allow anything for staff members
DOMAIN\special.user - Allow anything for a specific user.
DOMAIN\Domain Users - C:\programdata\* (This allows AppV Packages)
    DOMAIN\Domain Users - C:\Program Files (x86)\*
DOMAIN\Domain Users - All Files located in program files folder
DOMAIN\Domain Users - All files located in the Windows folder
BUILTIN\Administrators - (Default Rule) All Files
Packaged app Rules, Windows Installer Rules and Script Rules all have the default rule values enabled (Though, none of these rules are set to Enforced in the base AppLocker setup - I did find that 8.1 Modern UI apps would not function without the default
rules enabled for Packaged app Rules).
These rules appear to allow everything else to function happily, with the only error showing in the Event viewer logs being the DWM.exe issue.
I have attempted to specifically allow DWM.exe via direct file, publisher, path rules for all users as above and even NT AUTHORITY\System - all with no effect on the situation.
Has anyone else encountered this issue with AppLocker and Windows 8.1 before?
    Regards,
    /Glaic

    Hi,
Could you please paste the complete Event 8004 here so we can better know what happened?
Are there any domain or OU level group policies applied?  Local group policy will be overriden by higher lever gpos which might cause this issue.
Does this issue happen on a local user account?

  • Problems with starting jstart.EXE (help for/from anyone needed!)

    Dear all,
the last days I have spent some time trying to install CE7.1 and also CE711 EHP1. The installation itself worked great: no errors were reported during intallation. But somehow the instance CE1 never starts up completely. As I have found out, and so do many many many others, the problem lies in starting "jstart.EXE" (Please check your SAP Management Console: CE1 => matrix 0 => Process List).
The following behaviours I have monitored:
    1. When trying to start the CE1 instance jstart.EXE tries to start but stops after a while. So the J2EE Server is not started. This behaviour is monitored and reported by many posts here at SDN, but it seems that "final" solution has been posted, which is valid for anyone. At least non of the hints could help me.
    2. I have monitored that the status of jstart.EXE seems to hang at status "Starting the processes" (I have waited more than 25 minutes).
To all the experienced and anyone else:
PLEASE post all you hints here! This issues seems to be a very common issue and is not really solved. Other posts did not help me so far.
In my case (case 2 from above) I can provide the following information:
Today (December 3rd, 2008) I have installed CE7.1_SR5. Hardware requirements are fullfilled by 100%.
I have to mention that I have installed some old CE or NW J2EE version on the same system like about one year ago, and I uninstalled it after only one week.
Maybe what the jstart.EXE problems are somehow related to the license: does the "uninstallation" leave some data back in the system, which could be used by later installs in order to check the license (wich is only a 90 day license)?
    Who can help?
What is your experience with jstart.EXE?
Any help is very welcome. I am sure not only for me!
    Thanks,
    Pars

    Hi,
OK, if jstart in the "Process List" has status status "Starting processes" I guess what you have to monitor is the "AS Java Process Table". It should show which processes are being started at the moment.
If I remember correctly the first in this list are offline deployment/bootstrap (which need to run to prepare the instance after updates). After that two processes should be started: the icm and server0 (if you have created more nodes there might be more serverX processes).
So which one really fails? If it runs for long time and then goes down I suspect it might be server0 (that's the actual java server process). In this case you'll want to check for errors in <drive>/usr/sap/<SID>/JXX/work/_server0. files or the default trace.
Another way to determine what goes wrong might be to check the <drive>/usr/sap/<SID>/JXX/work directory. If you sort traces by date you'll probably get some idea. dev_<process> are the jstart output, the std_<process> is the actual stdout of the process, if the process failed probably the std file contains some more information on why it happened.
If you cannot find the problem is there a way to share the last files from the work directory. If it's a common problem we must identify and add it to the TS guide ...
    Best regards, dido

  • Can't install - says "Close RSO3server.exe" - Help pls!

    I start set-up.exe.
Msg = "Please close all of the following applications to continue:"  RSO3Server.exe

    Pls reply to [email protected]

Near as I can see, RSO3Server.exe is a part of something called RoboSource Control 3 from Adobe (never heard of this; part of RoboHelp maybe)?  Is this something you have installed your system?  If so, is there a user interface for shutting it down (a control panel, or an icon in the system tray maybe)?
This is an extreme method to get it out of the way...  Bring up your Task Manager.  Do you see RSO3Server.exe running in the Processes tab?  If so, right-click on it and end it.

  • WAS 6.40 ABAP stack install - error with sapstartsrv.exe - Help needed!

    Hi all,
Can anyone assist me with a new installation issue? I am trying to perform an initial install of WAS 6.40 SP3 ABAP stack (non unicode) using the NW Master CD and CD51030103 for the SAP Kernel on a vanilla W2K AS server.
I also have a previously installed working version of EP6.0 SP9 on WAS 6.40 (SP9) on the same physical server.
The problem is occuring at the Create and reregister services part of the new 6.40 kernel install, I am getting the message:
    WARNING 2004-12-08 18:45:26

I have had no problems in the past in installing a 6.20 kernel on the same host as a portal server, but this time with 6.40 I have had no luck.
I have tried replacing the version of sapstartsrv.exe from the
..usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\run directory with a more recent version to see if the exe version was the problem but this has not resolved.
I have also tried to run the installation again without deleting the previous files, and this has also made no difference.
I have read through most of the forum's regarding problems with sapstartsrv.exe failing, but couldn't find anything that can help fix my problem.
If anybody thinks they can help, it would be most appreciated
    Cheers,
    Paul

    Hi Sergio, hi Paul,
I'm getting the same error while trying to install with RI 2.5. Interesting enough, I also have a 6.20 installed on the same machine.
Sergio, do you mean by your last post one should change the system nr when configuring the installation?
Paul, did you find a workaround/solution?
    Thanks in advance

  • SO SLOW... will application (.exe) help

    Hello,
My program is running much much too slow. Would it help to build an application? (an .exe file)
    Thanks, IBAHKA

    Probably not.
Without trying to be insulting in my comments here, the problem is most likely in the way your application is written. Whatever is causing it to run slow within the LabVIEW development environment, will still be there after you build it into an executable.
We may be able to help find the trouble spots if you can give a few more details on what your applicaiton does. Maybe you can even post the code or a sample of it so we can see how everything is done.
There are a lot of things that slow an applicaition down. One common mistake is not putting any delay in loops that run continuosly. this will cause the applicaiton to use 100% of the processor all the time, so your applicaiton, and the entire computer will seem to run slow because the CPU is spending all of its time on your application.
