DWM + Terminal = Gaps

No matter what terminal I use (tested with xterm, urxvt, sakura, and roxterm), I still get extra padding around my terminal windows on the screen edges. This happens in both monocle and tiling mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Gaps appear because the terminal size is set according to the font height..not in pixels
You can just adjust the fontFace size OR do what I did and set the background color of the terminal to the same color as the desktop background ( I assume you don't have an image as a background since you're using a tiling window manager)
I'm using a tiling window manager with a wallpaper. Ooops, am I doing it wrong? I even have transparent terminals!
Well of course it's not wrong you can set whatever you want on your root window. but I find them useless in tiling window managers.
Sarcasm tags were needed in the previous post, it was a rhetorical question. Anyway, yes, the wallpaper is useless in a tiling window manager....unless you have transparent terminals!!

  • DWM + useless gap patch not creating horizontal gaps

Can anyone give me a hand with the uselessgap patch? I'm using version 5.9 found here: dwm.suckless.org/patches/uselessgap.
I've applied it but it doesn't seem to be making any gaps horizontally. This is the only patch I've installed thus far. Here is what the patch is producing:

-- mod edit: read the Forum Etiquette and only post thumbnails http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/For … s_and_Code [jwr] --

One of the goals of the DWM devs is to keep DWM's base source code at  2000 single lines of code or fewer.  Anytime you see a patch in which lines are inserted or replaced beyond the 2000-line mark, the patch was probably built against a previously patched DWM configuration.
So Unia probably built that patch against the rest of his configuration; that is, he may have other patches to his config that were intended to be applied before that one, which would move the relevant code to a different point than where it exists in your dwm.c file.  Usually, if only one or two hunks fail in the patching process, you can just open the target file (dwm.c in this case), do a search to find the lines the patch file mentions, and insert or replace them manually, then try building DWM to see if it works properly.  Give that a shot; learning to patch DWM by hand is a good skill to practice, and since there are only a few characters in this case, it's as good a test case as any.

  • DWM statusbar produces strange gap to the right

I'm using dwm-5.9 patched with statuscolors and when I use color codes with something like
    xsetroot -name "\x05$somestring\x01"
the statusbar gets a bigger gap to the right even though there's nothing set to display there. A picture would explain this better: (the statusbar script used is displayed in the terminal)
The gap gets bigger when adding more colored elements to the output string. This does not happen when not using statuscolor codes. What's wrong here?

Ok. I forgot to say that I patched dwm-5.9 with the statuscolor-5.9 patch. You say there are separate spacing issues on different versions - would it be worth trying to patch with an older version of statuscolor? My guess is it will require an older version of dwm..

  • [SOLVED]Creating a gap at the top of the screen in DWM / Dzen2

I've messed around with this for a couple days to no avail. I'd like to create a small gap at the top of the screen in dwm 6.0 (replacing dwm's topbar) so I can insert a dzen status bar. I'm pretty new to editing dwm.c, but from my google-fu have found that the answer lies somewhere in the setup() and updategeom() functions. Any other relevant information is only applicable to earlier versions of dwm.
So, can anyone help me out, or atleast point me in the right direction? I understand this might be possible through xmonad, but would like to avoid that if there's a chance.

Trilby wrote:If you really want to replace dwm's bar, then you don't need to do anything - just have dzen over dwm's bar.  If you wanted to make it as efficient as possible, you could delete the function that draws the bar (or probably more easily just delete it's contents so it is an empty function).
That actually worked to some effect, I was so OCD about it being clean I didn't want to paint over the original bar, but just deleting the function that draws it doesn't seem to have removed the gap where it used to be. This solution also allows me the ability to hide it as well.
So thanks, I'm pretty happy with these results.

  • [solved]DWM rules for opening terminal based apps

These are the rules that I have in my dwm config.h
The ncurses apps that open in the terminal do not follow the rules. How can accomplish this?
    static const Rule rules[] = {
/* class instance title tags mask isfloating monitor */
    { "Gimp", NULL, NULL, 0, True, -1 },
    { "Firefox", NULL, NULL, 1 << 3, False, -1 },

    { "ncmpc", NULL, NULL, 1 << 8, False, -1 },
Last edited by derrickcope (2015-05-02 05:26:14)

thanks for the suggestion. xprop just sees them as "terminator". When I start them with -T "title" then xprop sees them with "title".
When I used the -T switch in .xinitrc and then changed my rules to
    static const Rule rules[] = {
/* class instance title tags mask isfloating monitor */
    { "Gimp", NULL, NULL, 0, True, -1 },
    { "Firefox", NULL, NULL, 1 << 3, False, -1 },
    { "Pcmanfm", NULL, NULL, 1 << 1, False, -1 },
    { "ranger", NULL, "ranger", 1 << 6, False, -1 },
    { "mutt", NULL, "mutt", 1 << 7, False, 2 },
    { "ncmpc", NULL, "ncmpc", 1 << 8, False, 2 },
They are still opening on the first monitor and not on the tag I set. I am not sure I am doing it correctly. Should I write terminator as the class?

  • [SOLVED] dwm: Changing terminal background?

    Hello all,
I'm trying out dwm and love the simplicity. I've gotten it up and running but am noticing something odd.
    - If I have an .xinitrc with "exec dwm" in it and run startx, it starts up but any terminal (ctrl+alt+enter) comes up with a white background and black font.
    - If I rename .xinitrc to something like .xinitrc2 and run startx, the terminal has a black background with a white font.
I want the black background and white font with .xinitrc so I can show the date. I've played around with config.h but don't see anything for the terminal colors (only the 1 2 3 ... bar above).
I'm pretty new to dwm so I might be missing something simple. Does anyone have any ideas?

Using xrdb to source your ~/.Xresources is pretty instant, so in addition to possibly causing problems, there will probably be no noticeable difference in time either.

  • DWM - tag issue

I have two questions regarding dwm:
    1) I have uninstalled urxvt and built the AUR package rxvt-unicode-patched in attempt to fix the gap around terminal windows.  The gap still remains, so is there something else that needs to be done (wiki suggested that this should fix issue which apparently is due to font size)?  I tried the alternative of changing "static Bool resizehints" to False in config.h, which fixed dimensions but introduced a lot of redraw anomalies.
    2) Is there a patch/config change that ensures that a new window stays in the tag where it was intended to be opened.  For example, if I am in tag 2 and open firefox but move to tag 1 before firefox has had a chance to open, it will now open in tag 1.  Is there a way to keep it in tag 2?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. I have a standard urxvt install and
    static const Bool resizehints = False;
in my config.h. No gaps (except for useless ones) observed.
    2. This is what I have in my config.h and works just like you described it should (FF opens by default in tag 1 only):
    { "Namoroka", NULL, NULL, 1 << 0, False, -1, -1 },

  • [SOLVED] Xorg freeze with nvidia GeForce 210 when resizing terminal

    Hello,
I am working on Archlinux. My computer freeze when I resize a terminal window.
To reproduce the problem, I follow the below steps :
1- launch openbox (with tint2, xcompmgr and nitrogen)
2- start the "terminal" console emulator (with true transparent background)
3- launch opera and go to a website which take a while to load (with a lot of data) (I used http://www.lemonde.fr)
4- while the website is loading, switch to the terminal window and double click on the title bar to maximize it
         5- the box freeze
I am not able to take the control back. I cannot exit or kill Xorg / Openbox. I cannot switch to a text terminal (ttyx). No key sequence is working.
Only a hard reset of the box is working.
I have tried to disable the transparent background of the terminal window without success.
I have tried to not start xcompmgr without success.
The problem also occurs with rxvt-unicode instead of terminal.
It seems the problem happens more often when using console emulator based on vte.
vte itself has the same issue.
The only workaround I have found is to disable the harware acceleration with the below parameter in the xorg.conf file:
    Option    "RenderAccel"    "true"
The problem with this workaround are poor graphical performances.
Could you please let me know if you have any idea / clue to identify / fix this problem ?
    Thanks and regards

    Hi jasonwryan,
Your thread helps a lot. I saw a lot of posts but not this one.
This workaround is fine for me to wait the fix.
    Thanks a lot
    Workaround :
It seems the problem might be linked to transparent items like background.
As explained in the above thread :
According to the bug report the nVidia driver is freaking out and creating too many events, which causes an event buffer in Xorg to overflow.  It works OK with the older Xorg, though.
So the temporary solution is to downgrade 3 packages.
    Install the tool to downgrade
    > yaourt -Sy downgrade
    Downgrade
Note the item number can change
    > downgrade xf86-input-evdev
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 2 (xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server-common
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-common-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
Be carefull : don't update these 3 packages when updating your system (pacman -Syu) since it is not fixed.

  • Looking for a terminal that does not truncate lines when resized

I am a huge fan of tiling window managers in general and have used dwm exclusively for over a year now. One thing that drives me crazy though is that when I switch a terminal window from being the primary window to a secondary and then back again, all of the lines are truncated to the smaller width. If I am watching a log file for example, this makes the previous output totally unreadable. Does anyone have a solution for this? Is there a way to make the terminal not truncate the lines if resized to a smaller width?
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED]dwm and Diablo II?

    Hi all,
    Quick question--well maybe?
Decided to plunge into the world of tiling wm's and have so far decided on dwm.  So far really like it and it helps out my old T21 Thinkpad.  I do play some games on the laptop when I'm out of town but Diablo II in wine doesn't seem to work properly.  I've searched and googled to death and haven't really found a definitive answer.  It just seems to resize the screen and then freezes.
Edit: To tell the truth, it doesn't really freeze.  I can still bring up another terminal or something else but the resolution is all messed up.

    1)  Yes, I run both e17 and pekwm on this laptop.  It works in both other wm's.
    2)  Haven't tried running it from terminal yet.  I'll try that and see what happens, though.
    3)  No changes made other than installing dwm.
Edit: well, here's what spits out when run from terminal:
    [brian@archlaptop ~]$ wine 'c:\\Program Files\\Diablo II\\Diablo II.exe'
    [brian@archlaptop ~]$ fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33ebfc,0x00000000), stub!

And,  I'll try what thayer suggests, thanks.   Yeh, I tried setting float before running the script I use and didn't help.  I'll try the config.h route next.

  • [dwm] can not close irssi window when opened in a xterm class

    Hello guys,
I know the subject title is not really meaningful but the problem is a bit odd.
When I start irssi in a opened xterm window I can easily close it via modkey-shift-c. To open it directly in a specific tag I created a new class for irssi and defined in config.h how to deal with that class.
    the script called "irc"
    #!/bin/bash
xterm -class irc -e irssi &
and the relevant part of config.h
    static const Rule rules[] = {
/* class instance title tags mask isfloating monitor */
    { "irc", NULL, NULL, 1 << 1, False, -1 },
When I then try to close the window with modkey-shift-c I just get the message "Irssi: Reloaded configuration".
I don't really know why this happens. I defnied also a seperate class for alsamixer and closing this is working without any problem.
What could I try to solve that?
    Best regards.

What key do you have assigned as modkey in dwm?
It seems that modkey+shift+c is issuing the /RELOAD command in irssi rather than closing the window.  The modkey is superceded by whatever appilcation is running in the terminal.
I run irssi in xterm and modkey+shift+c closes it without issue.
