DX80 HDMI to MAC Mini no Sound

Just deployed a DX80 to customer with a Mac Mini as their workstation. When connecting to mac mini via HDMI the mac mini is not detecting the HDMI as a sound device. Only option under sound setup is the internal speaker. I have tried power cycle off the Mac mini and DX80 and no luck.  When I connect the Mac mini to my samsung tv via HDMI both audio and video work as expected. When connecting the DX to DVD player or XBOX sound and video work as expected. Anyone else have any suggestions?

The DX80 does not support Audio input on the HDMI connector.  There is a feature request logged to have this added in the future - see https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCuq01662.

  • Apple tv delivers audio over hdmi but mac mini does not, why?

My Apple TV, 3rd Gen, delivers audio and video over one HDMI cable. When I have the Mac mini connected I can get only video and this is very frustrating. Has anyone else encountered this situation and can someone tell me how I can fix it?
I would appreciate positive answers, not all of these "I don't know" or "I'm not sure" that I see everywhere.
    Thank you very much!

Have you selected HDMI in System Preferences->Sound->Output?
Also, do you have anything plugged into the Audio Line Out jack of
the Mini.  If so, unplug the device.  On the Mac Mini, pluggng anything
into Line Out disables all other audio outputs.

  • Mac mini choppy sound

hi ive got a problem with my mac mini mid 2009 model, when i plug some headphones in or external speaker into the audio output, the sound is choppy it sort of goes on then off very quickly with like 1sec intervals. its unlistenable. please help

If you bought your mac second hand, you might not have got the install dvd that came with it. Your mac can boot from a dvd or external disk. If you have a mac friend he might be able to help you with that.
When you boot from a clean system on a dvd you can eliminate problems caused by faulty files in the system software.
The other possibility I can think of is hardware. Either in the circuitry or simply in the connector. The intermittent sound you describe does not indicate problems with the plug, but does it crackle if you wriggle the plug?
If your mini has a HDMI plug, you can plug that into a tv and try if the sound is better that way.

  • HDMI output Mac mini PLEASE HELP

Hi all. I have a Panasonic HD TV that I would like to use as my output for my Mac Mini audio. The thing is, it has always been my output and it has always worked. RANDOMLY, yesterday it stopped working and it switched to my internal speakers. Now, everytime I try to switch back to Panasonic output ( I click on it ) The sound still comes out of the internal speaker. Please someone help this is very annoying and i dont know why this is happening.

    Try another HDMI cable.

  • HDMI On Mac Mini Late 2012: Problem with hardware?

Just converted from PC to Mac.
Purchased latest mac mini (Late 2012 version)
Have tried several monitors through HDMI port and each time the picture quality is poor with very bad text resolution.
Have tried HDMI to HDMI  and also tried HDMI to DVI adaptor.
This is with full 1080p 27 inch samsung monitor and HP 2010i monitor.
Is there a problem with the HDMI port on this new mac mini?
The monitors I have are fine and are crystal sharp when connected to PC.
Many thanks if you can answer this

OK. So I have now tried LG 27 Inch E2742 Monitor as follows:
    1) Mini display to DVI-D : Picture good with decent text resolution
    2) HDMI-HDMI: Picture poor with poor colour and text resolution. This is not a calibration issue.
The samsung monitor 27 inch series 3 also has poor picture and colour and text resolution with HDMI-HDMI. Again this is not a calibration issue. It does not have a DVI-D input to test the minidisplay port.
So it seems the HDMI port is not working properly but the minidisplay one is ok as I suspected.
From reading the other threads it seems this is a common problem including those people that have taken their minis back for an exchange and experienced same problem.
Is there likely to be a software update to resolve this?

  • HDMI in Mac Mini 2014

Hi people, about a month ago, I received my new Mac Mini 2014, I connect it to my Panasonic 22" LCD TV, and I get the surprise of a not good image quality, I put down the Sharpness, and Noise Reduction, but still seems blurry and fuzzy text, it don't seems clear. Start reading on internet, found the solution buying a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, my TV got a VGA port, and it means could work, this might be the solution? or could be another? Also I try using SwitchResX but nothing changes, also my TV doesn't got the option of change the HDMI input to PC. This problem isn't to bad, but working or reading is really annoying and I know that could see better.
My Regards, to the Apple Community.

Maybe VGA would be better. I would first try:

  • 24" LED display to mac mini, no sound or camera

I recently bought a Mac Mini.
I also inherited a 24" LED Mac display as well.
Am having trouble getting the camera and sound to work on the display.
The cable from the display I received has three plugs.
    1.  Thunderbolt
    2.  USB
    3.  MagSafe
I have tried all four USB inputs on the back of the Mac Mini itself with no luck.
I was under the assumption that the MagSafe isn't needed because its used for charging (Macbook).
Is there another cable that is needed?
I hope I am not missing anything obvious.

    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there.

  • Core Duo Mac Mini - NO Sound issue

I have a Core Duo Mac Mini and I have an issue where my sound doesn't work in various applications including iChat (interface sounds of iChat only; audio for chats works OK), Windows Media player & Flash Player.
While re-booting SOMETIMES restores the [interface] sound to iChat, the same cannot be said for WMP & Flash players. I have uninstalled Flash Player and reinstalled the beta universal application from Macromedia and I still cannot hear any Flash based sounds.
Even when I have no [interface] sounds in iChat, I have normal system interface sounds such as alert sounds and volume level alert.
Anyone running an Intel based Mac have similar issues?

  • HELP! Suddenly Mac Mini NO SOUND, absolutely!

    Hello all and Happy Holidays.
All of a sudden, my sister's new Mac Mini Intel Core Duo LOST its sound:
    -No Startup Chime
-Move Vol Up, Down and Mute, no effect
-Open up Sound Preferences, inside Sound, tried everything, no sound
-Plug and Unplug external speakers, no sound
    -Internal Speakers, no sound!
-Internal Speakers are "grey out" inside the Sound (System Prefernces)
    -Play iTunes etc, no sound
I tried some method mentioned here like launching Garage Band and play some on-screen keys, NO SOUND
Zap the PRam a few times, NO SOUND; I can just hear the faint noise of the hard disk and/or the internal mechanism making a little noise. No chime.
I have a feeling this is a hardward (sound) failure, anyone?
    Happy New Year and Cheers!

    Try the SMU reset:
Unplug everything for 10 minutes, including power and peripherals.
Plug everything back in without pressing power button.
    Turn on normally.
You may have to reset clock afterwards.

i checked System Preferences>Sound>Output.  it says "no output divices found"
if anybody have any ideas.  i would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

    I would try a PRAM/NVRAM reset...

  • Mac Mini buzzing sound?

Hey, so my Mac Mini on occasion will make a WAAAAAAAAA sound that lasts about 3 seconds. It's on a middle E note. Anyone know why? Yes, I tried to Google it but Mac Mini alarm or Mac Mini buzz comes up with thousands of unrelated hits. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is it coming from the speakers, or inside the Mini?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • Mac mini - no sound

Hi all, I know this topic has been around a few times but I have tried the SMC reset trick recommended in the forum and I still have no sounds. Its like the mute button has been turned on and I can't turn it off??  In the sound preferences page there is no output device listed. I am connected to  samsung TV as my monitor using the nornal run of the mill PC monitor connection. Can't even get sound out of the mini itself let alone feed it through external speakers.
Any help appreciated. We're out of warranty so not really wanting to have to take it into a shop
    Louise.

    try this:
download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Combo updater from here
    reboot into safe mode
run verify disk and permission repair sessions using disk utility
    run the Combo
let the Mac reboot normally and repair permissions again

  • Mac Mini Late-2012 5.1 Surround Sound Issue

Hey guys, I'm running into some issues setting up 5.1 Surround sound on my mac mini. Heres my setup:
    - Mac Mini -> HDMI -> Projector
    - Mac Mini -> Digital Output (Toslink) -> Surround sound (Logitech Z906)
No matter what settings i try i cannot get 5.1 surround sound working. I've downloaded test tracks from dolby and all. Logitech is set to 5.1 and all. I've attempted to change the setup in audio MIDI to 48khz + 2ch-24Bit Integer , with no success. The 5.1 option inside of configure output is greyed out. Is there something i'm doing wrong? I've tried the 5.1 test tracks from Dolby through VLC.
Please help me, i've been working at this for nearly 2 days now. I've checked other answers with no sucess.
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, there is no configuration option for the S/PDIF interface. The following are the supported output formats:
    2.0 (Stereo L/R)
5.1 (Dolby Digital - DVD bitstream or AC3 encoded containers only via QuickTime or VLC)
5.1 (DTS - DVD bitstream only)
To configure for proper 5.1 use, you need to set DVD Player to use Digital Out (Optical), not the Digital Out (HDMI). To configure VLC you need to set it to use Digital Out also, though you may have to fiddle with it to figure out which digital output is which as VLC's advanced configuration options aren't the most user friendly out there.
Once again, for the S/PDIF interface there are no configuration options available other than Stereo. 5.1 tracks will not play properly unless the apps used to play them back are capable of sending encoded digital audio. Dolby Digital and DTS are bitstream formats (encoded), and as such require that the app can work with those tracks.
Audio MIDI Setup does have the option to manually select Encoded Digital Audio in the format menu, but you should not do so as that disables regular stereo playback. The aforementioned apps will automatically switch between Encoded Digital Audio and Stereo, usually reverting to Stereo when playback is concluded.

  • Sound on receiver drops to internal Mac Mini speaker shutting down the TV..

    Hi all,
    Here 's my setup:
Mac Mini connected to the Yamaha RXV-2600 (AV-receiver) over HDMI connected to a Panasonic plasma over HDMI.
When playing music over the AV Receiver everything works like a charm until I switch off the TV, then the sound over the receiver drops dead and all I get is the internal Mac Mini speaker sound???
My STB has the same connections (using HDMI input on the Yamaha an also HDMI out to the TV) but does not suffer from this usability blunder.
    Does anybody have a solution?

You are suggesting another hardware workaround for something which should be taken into account by the mini' s drivers?
A 1.5 $ toslink adapter can do the trick for me just as well.
It is just my point that I wanted to avoid all this and waited for the hdmi enabled mini.
If I had bought the previous it would have saved me 300 €.
It is an Apple stupidity, even my cheap STB knows how to do it right.
Sorry for the tone in my reply, I appreciate the help, but I am getting more and more frustrated by this device that in terms of performance can't compete with my old XBMC enabled XBox of €50.
I wonder whether someone from Apple actually reads these issues, and whether they are doing something about it...
The Mac mini is a computer, a computer is designed and expected to be used with a dedicated monitor which is not going to disappear from the computers perception. There is a scenario whereby a computer monitor is shared between multiple computers which is via a keyboard/video/mouse switch. These KVM devices have been specifically designed for this purpose and avoid this sort of problem by sending a signal to the computer +even when+ the KVM is switched so the monitor is displaying a different computer.
As far as I have seen, typical AV Receivers do not send a signal in the same scenario to non-displaying devices and hence in this case the Mac mini perceives a loss of signal. The Gefen device therefore gets round this problem.
With regards to set-top boxes and similar devices, they are not computers and have therefore been specifically designed (differently) to accommodate this situation.
I agree it would be more preferable for Apple to make the Mac do this sort of thing automatically itself, but such a use is not the normal one for a computer so it is somewhat harsh to try and blame Apple.
