DxO Optics Pro - Aperture plug-in?

Hi,
The Apple list of plug-ins includes DXO Optics Pro. I've got a trial version of v9.0 & have it running fine as a image editor. Anyone know how to install it as a plug-in?
Have searched several places & mostly found that it does not work as a plug-in. Also found a plug-in called Catapult that's used to shuffle finles back & forth between Aperture & DxO. Tried dropping the application into Liobrary>Application Support>Aperture>Plug-ins but no luck. Now I can't remove the alias out of the Library folder.
So can it really be used as a plug-in?

Here's a follow up for anyone who finds this thread in the future. I may have answered my own question but since I'm still learning OP9, there may be another feature yet to be discovered. Optics Pro 9 has a new feature, Export to Application, that might be stretched to consider it a plug-in. You don't install it as a plug-in or even select it as an external editor from Aperture- it seems designed to be a stand alone preprocessor for your RAW files.
If you wish to continue using Aperture for DAM, you'd launch OP9 after importing your RAW files into Aperture. The OP9 Organize tab shows the complete folder structure on your storage drive including all the folders w/in the Aperture container. Folder names are the cryptic number system used by Aperture so navigating could be a challenge in a large library. Anyway, this gives you complete access to all your original files so they can be opened in OP9 using its RAW converter for further processing. Several of OP9 tools such as Prime noise reduction can only be applied to the original RAW file. After processing is complete, you Export to Application & choose Aperture. After you've chosen a file format, OP9 will place the file back into the Aperture container as an untitled project & the file will have "_openwith" at the end of the name. Within Aperture, you can then move the file to any project or folder you wish.
This certainly makes round tripping easier but not as convent as say NIK plugins or what the plug-in Catapult apparently does - put the file back into a stack w/ the parent file.

DxO Optics Pro and Apple Aperture workflow?

I'm wondering if anyone here has workflow suggestions for using DxO Optics Pro and Apple Aperture?
I've been using DOP for a couple of years now and love it, of course. I am just starting to use Aperture to catalog, sort and arrange a large collection of images. I would like to be able to import images on my drive into Aperture and keep them in Aperture's library, and get DOP to do its work in small batches when needed (essentially the "Scenario 2" workflow that is suggested in DxO's support section for using Adobe Lightroom.) But is that even possible with Aperture? Needless to say, I don't want to lose (during import into Aperture or export to DOP) the photo file information that DOP uses to do optics corrections.
If the workflow above isn't possible, I'm open to suggestions. If I must process ALL my images with DOP first, before importing them into Aperture, I can live with that, but it would be good to hear from some experienced users before I just assume I have to do that.

I've been working on getting this one figured out with DxO for the last week or so.
While I can't report that I have figured out the secret of the mysterious DxO OP & Aperture workflow (there doesn't appear to be one), I have figured out some key info that I needed to know to get started with Aperture, and continue using DxO OP.
First, the main thing that I became curious about... What EXIF information is lost when importing into & exporting from Aperture. I especially wanted to know what EXIF information that DxO OP needed to do its processing would be lost. (I know there are EXIF info viewers that I could use to check the info for myself, but I wanted to here conclusions from the source.)
The tests were done with the very helpful tech support folks at DxO. We ran 4 files through their fine tooth combs. Two files were straight from the camera, one file was imported (not referenced) into Aperture then I "dug" for it within Aperture's Library using "Show Package Contents", and the fourth was imported into Aperture's Library then I did a File > Export... > Export Master. (As Hud46/Dave guessed above) All EXIF was identical for all 4 files, so DxO could do its complete processing on any of them.
Many of you may have known this already, but I wanted to be sure.
Now, on the topic of a usable workflow for Aperture & DxO, I'm still working on that on. I'm guessing that I'll be finding out pretty much the same that you guys have mentioned here, that they don't play well (enough) together yet.
Allen, I agree that DxO does need to work on their compatibility with Aperture (as they seem to have done with Lightroom) so any feedback to them about that would be a good thing. Having been in touch with them a fair bit on this topic though, I have found that DxO sees Aperture as something of a "closed" system. I don't know what's up with politics of all this, so I'm just going to keep asking for the compatibility and let them sort it out.
Jack, Thank you very much for your workflow suggestion. I will give it a try and see how it works for me.
For what it's worth, I did just do a shoot for a client and used Aperture & DxO OP together. At first glance it looks something like what you did Jack. What I did, simply, was:
1) Downloaded images from the camera using Image Capture (I had already done this step actually) and put them in a folder.
2) Imported the images into an Aperture Library (for just this project) as Referenced Masters.
3) Sorted & rated them. Selected my Picks.
4) Exported those Picks as Masters.
5) Ran DxO Optics Pro on the Picks & saved the output.
6) Delivered to the client, then archived that Aperture Library, DxO's sidecars & output to Hard Drive & DVD.
7) Deleted all of it from my hard drive. (Why keep toting around, and having Aperture deal with in some way, 6+ GB of originals & thumbnails, etc when I likely won't need them all in that incarnation again? Hard drive may be getting bigger and bigger, but I can easily outshoot them.) Now, of course if I need to work with that shoot's Aperture Library in the future, I can't just work with in on the DVD, but at least I won't have to do my rating all over again.
Just thought I'd share that workflow in case it helps someone out with a similar situation.
Onward with the testing... I still have to figure out which way I should import my own main collection of images.

I have tried re-booting my computer, but this did not work.

Using Lightroom 4.2 and DXO Optics Pro 7, DXO FilmPack 3, DXO ViewPoint 2. Problem with ViewPoint 2 plug-in.

I am not seeing the plug-ins for DXO ViewPoint. The plug-in is there for FilmPack 3, but not for ViewPoint 2. Any suggestions? Does this have to do with the version of Lightroom, or the version of DXO? Is there something I need to do to make that plug-in appear? Thanks

This is only moderately related to Aperture, for it's plugin capability. Apologies for raising it here, but I figured I'd find like-minded people here who may have an opinion they are willing to share or maybe even a solution to the no-plugin challenge.
Until now, I've always ...
Imported raw files from my camera into Aperture
Deleted failed frames
Review all remaining frames and rated them, stacked similar frames and picked the best one of each stack, etc.
Review all remaining frames again and flagged the ones I would use for sending out, publishing, etc.
Make the appropriate adjustments to the flagged images
Do other stuff to it through whatever plugins, such as HDR or fusion, through 16-bit TIFF
Finishing touches through the final editor, I've switched to Pixelmator 3.0 FX recently
Export to the final format
I just noticed DxO has a 42% discount on Optics Pro 9 at the moment. It's a piece of software I've had my eye on for a while now because of the optical correction ability. But I'm struggling to figure out how it would fit into my existing workflow as described above. Although I believe previous versions worked as a plugin to Aperture, and that would be fine as I'd pull the images through it from inside Aperture. But the current version 9 seems to not have that capability, which means I'm now wondering where to insert this into my workflow if I were to purchase the software. All I can think of is either at the start or the end of the workflow.
Does anybody have any thoughts on the above?

Mention away. We're just users. Lr and Aperture are very nearly matched. Each is a superb program. For me, the advantages of Aperture where overwhelming: I preferred the non-modal interface; I found (and find) it more amenable to my style; I loved (and use) the additional layer of Image organization; I have both an iPad and an iPhone; I use the integration with other OS X programs; and my wife uses iPhoto and has an iPhone.
I use Sony FF cameras and Sony lenses. For the most part, these don't _need_ lens correction. I don't sell architectural pictures.
The sad part is that, as with hardware for recording light data (I mean camera bodies and lenses), software is part of an ecosystem, and once you commit to one you are likely to stick with it. Aperture is far behind in providing lens correction. If you need it, you have to look elsewhere, and in looking elsewhere may decide -- wisely -- to change ecosystems.
The _small_ thing to keep in mind is that lens-correction should be done right after RAW conversion. The large thing to keep in mind is that each time to move an image file from one ecosystem to another, you double your storage requirements and kink the "non-destructive" workflow. Unfortunately, there is no single ecosystem that currently meets your needs.
It is worth noting that more and more cameras _depend_ on lens-correction. At first, this appears as a kind of cheap alternative to well-engineered cameras and lenses. My sense is that, now that it is available, the _combination_ of hardware and software results in a _more efficient_ use of resources. (Why spend 4X on lenses when you do it with 1X and a bit of software?) The downside is that the user becomes dependent on particular software.
As camera engineers rely more and more on software as a necessary pipe in the imaging workflow, "RAW" sensor data will have to re-imagined. I'm not a scientist, so I can't see around that corner. For sensor-site discrete things, "corrected" RAW makes sense. For other things -- e.g.: chromatic fringing -- it doesn't.

DxO 4.5 with plug-in for Lightroom available

Another great news, DxO released update 4.5 to its Optics Pro software. It incorporates a Photoshop plug-in and a Lightroom plug-in as well.
You can send files from Lightroom to DxO, as you already do with LightZone, including autostacking with original... but you can also send files to Lightroom from DxO standalone version.
Good stuff. DxO made clear that they want to push integration further but, for this, Adobe has to hurry with SDK release...

Craig, I believe the DxO pdf manual (p.16) mentions that DxO always returns files in TIF format (http://www.dxo.com/intl/photo/learning/tutorials/dxo_optics_pro/integrating_dxo_optics_p ro_v4_5_and_above_with_adobe_lightroom)
"Hint: RAW images edited by the DxO Optics Pro plug-in will always be returned to Lightroom as a 16-bit TIFF."
If I've misinterpreted this and someone knows how to return the file in DNG or RAW format please let me know. I'd much rather continue Lightroom adjustments on a RAW file than a TIF file, especially since my 16bit TIF files are about 50-60MB compared to 13MB for my 5D .cr2 files.
Wick, I'm not sure about the sidecar comment either. I have XMP sidecar files created and updated for all my .cr2 files but the metadata was still lost after the round-trip.

I really want DxO to work but it just isn't elegant when you need to process hundreds to thousands of different images quickly, which is what LR does very well. I do mainly travel photography so my favorite lens is the Canon 24-105 f/4L. Didn't realize how much distortion happened on the wide-angle side as I used to travel with a Canon 1DMarkII (1.3 crop factor). I'm now travelling with a Canon 5D and unfortunately that full-frame DSLR really shows up weaknesses in lenses :(

Users of DXO Optics Pro will find a free upgrade to 4.5 that also features a plug-in to LightRoom, allowing users to either import images into LR and then into DXO and back out again to LR (probably the better option) or to import photos into DXO and then transfer them to LR (seems like you might miss the import functionality that LR offers).

Yeah, I hope DxO is updated so that it becomes a true plugin. I downloaded and gave it a try. Works well on my wide-angle shots with my Canon 5D full-frame sensor. Not so useful for my 1DMarkII and non-wide-angle shots.
Way too slow in launching from LR, adjusting and coming back to be useful as part of my LR workflow - better if you're adjusting a few prize images. TIF metadata also lost when file comes back into LR so you have to resync.
In conclusion, not useful in its current form to use well within LR's fast workflow. And the software isn't cheap.

Using Lightroom with DXO Optics

I've just started using Lightroom and on the advice of a friend, have also started using DXO Optics Pro. From what I have read, DXO is used to make global modifications and Lightroom to specific modifications. There does seem to be some overlap with features between the two products. My eye is not sharp enough to see differences, if any, in the adjustments I might make in DXO vs Lightroom such as tone curve, hue etc. I am wondering if anyone who has used DXO has noticed if DXO handles certain modifications better then Lightroom and visa versa. Am I really better off making most or all of my global changes in DXO?

If you are working with raw data, you kind of have to decide at one point you'll lose that full capability using these two products. If you do lens correction or other work in Dx0, you'll have to pass partially processed (linear DNG) to LR so you're not really working with raw data any longer. That's an important consideration in the workflow. Anyway, there was a recent thread about this on Luminous Landscape, you might want to pick through it then come back and ask questions here (or there):

DonCarlos, you have to create the folders if you do not have them. In Finder, follow the folders up to Aperture. This is where I had to create "Plug-Ins" and then clicked on it to open. Then created its subfolder "Export". I dumped the Flickr plugin here and restarted Aperture. Works perfectly.

Looking for a Programmer to Create An Acrobat Pro "Embed" Plug In

Hello everyone,
I am Looking for a Programmer to Create An Acrobat Pro "Embed" Plug In.
The purpose of this is to be able to easily embed YouTube Video's within Acrobat documents so that It can stream the content into the PDF file.
Many have suggested to download the content and embed it, but doing so will violate the user agreement with YouTube plus it would increase the size of the PDF file considerably.
If there are any Programmers out there that would be interested in taking this project on please let me know. I believe there is a real need for this tool which people would really like to have.
The programming goals for the project would be as follows:
1. Take the Free YouTube API and create a plug in for Acrobat that would allow you to easily embed content into any PDF. The content must be PC & Mac Playable within the Latest Version Reader.*
2. The "Embed Plug-In" Would essentially allow you to just copy and past the embed codes from YouTube, Hulu, or any other web source that provides an "Embed Code" so that the content can easily be placed within the PDF. This embeded content could be videos, audio, playlist systems, ads, etc.. "anything with embed codes."
3. You would be able to select an area of the PDF for the placement, paste the code and then be able see a preview of the content, then be able to resize the content window. if it resizable like YouTube Files.
4. You need to be able to "Add" to the defined the "Trusted Source" from the Emebed Code information so that it does not require every instance of the content loading to require the user to select "Allow" each time it loads.
The Market for this is as follows:
- Web Based Magazine Creation, that turn into Flash Magazines that were created with Indesign, Acrobat then Flash. This process would easily allow anyone to create interactive content, with ads and multimedia. Anyone cab be interactive publisher with no need for Flash Programming Skills which is currently what is needed to achieve much of this process.
- Educational Institutions that want to create lesson materials with Web Content.
- Business's that wish to share media elements from the web within PDF presentations and Business Materials, such as training materials, Marketing Research, etc..
If you need examples of how this might be used please contact me to discuss it further.
I have a project that I am working on that needs this type of functionality and the deadline is approaching so I am seeking any and all help I can find to reach my goal. This Plug could also be a plug in to Indesign as well. Whatever it will take to reach the desired goal.

Aperture put about 700 images in an untitled project folder, but all the images are the JPEGs. What am I missing?

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.

For other people that view this discussion, after a couple of days of trying things and then viewing a couple of other discussions, what worked for me was uninstalling my Silverlight and then reinstalling it. I have Carbonite On-Line back up running incremental (wifi to the cloud) backup in the background I just learned that I can nominate folders for it to ignore..
So... to prevent it grinding away needlessly using up resources, I was daydreaming I would import RAW files from my camera into to a "TEMP" folder that I would have Carbonite ignore
I am disciplined at sorting through shots directly after importing them..
Perhaps I can also get Time Machine to ignore that "TEMP" folder too? (Although hard drive storage is less of a worry...
This way I only back up 'keeper shots'?
Am I getting warm? Is this a valid workflow / back up regime?
I hear Aperture 3 has file management functions that are helpful.. But I am not up to speed with what they are...
Carbonite WONT back up attached drives - only the Laptop own drive.. And I want my 'keeper' library shots on two back up systems..
Am I missing a trick? Looking for do's and donts - pitfalls to avoid etc.. I want to set things up the right way from the beginning, I plan to migrate all my RAW operations from iPhoto / Elements set up on a MBAir to a new MBPro running Aperture 3 in about a week.

I fear you may have already done part of that, inadvertently, since the folder shows no contents.
But it's not a password for the Time Machine application; it's the sharing of the WD disk, which is done by WD. When you back up with Time Machine to a simple external HD, there is no password for the drive. When you back up over a network to a Time Capsule, or a USB drive connected to it, you set up the password, if any, via Airport Utility, and I believe that's stored by the router as well as in the keychain on your Mac.
Do you still have the original 250 GB HD? If so, your best bet may be to get an enclosure for it, from http://www.macsales.com/ or the like. You can put the HD into it and connect it to your Mac via USB or FireWire, and it will become a normal external HD. Then you can start up from it and "clone" the HD to the new one.
Then you might be able to re-establish contact with the WD, and see your backups, unless they got erased during all the problems, or erase it and start over.
