Dye vs pigment based inks

Have an HP C7180 all-in-one.  Which of the six inks are dye based (black, light and dark magenta, yellow, light and dark cyan)?  I want to print some labels on fabric and need to know if the inks are dye or pigment (if pigment, I need to pre-treat the fabric).  Thx!

Hi,The HP 363 / 02 / 177 / 801 ink cratridges are Dye-based as you may find listed on the following link as an example:http://store.hp.com/SwitzerlandStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=C8721EE&opt=&sel=SUP&lang=en-CH Be aware the the printer is not intended for a fabric, I suggest being carefull with a such to avoid any damage to the printer.. You may find any supported media type listed below:http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/GetPDF.aspx%2F4AA0-4466EEE.pdf Regards,Shlomi

Bob, maybe you were thinking of the HP56 mono cartridge, which is pigment based.
Oops, yes Ciara is correct.  I was thinking of the 56 black cartridge.

  • Is my ink dye or pigment based? My printer is an HP 1050A and uses 301 cartridges. Thanks

For the Deskjet 1050a printer the black ink is pigmented, the color inks are dye based.

  • The difference between 'Pigment Based' and 'Dye Based' color inks?

What is the difference between 'Pigment Based' color inks (as used in the HP OfficeJet 8500 series) and 'Dye Based' color inks (as used in the HP OfficeJet 7500 printer)?
    Thanks;
    Mark S

Pigment based inks have small color particles suspended in a carrier (like paint).  Dye based inks have colorant disolved in the carrier (like water colors).  Pigment based inks generally have better lightfastness, dye based inks are generally better for photo quality on glossy media.  The following Google search has many pages with useful information.

  • Soy-based inks: durable?

I'd like to print in an environmentally friendly way. At the same time, my organization is too young to gamble on the impression our materials will make. I'm committed to using recycled paper, but I'd like to know if soy-based inks will hold up as well over time as regular ink.
I've done some research, but the glowing reviews I've found have all been written by people whose business is selling soybeans or soy inks, so I'm wondering what your real-world results have been.
    Thanks!

    Philip,
Soy-based inks have been used for years. Outside of their non-petroleum smell, I haven't been aware of any meaningful difference in appearance or longevity.

  • How to switch from color pigement ink to dye ink in my HP9500A?

I have a HP 9500A and recently ordered 1litre of each color and when it arrived the color inks were all dye based ink not the pigment based ink I had been using. My print heads need replacing and I thought I would switch to dye for the color when I replace the heads. How do I flush the dye ink out of the system or is it even necessary to flush the pigmented ink out before installing the dye based ink cartridges.

This forum is focused on consumer level products.  For the Designjet you may have better results posting in the HP DesignJet forum here, that is where the DesignJet experts can be found.
In general when switching from dye based inks to pigmented or vice versa you would need to change the printheads, ink tubes, supplies and perhaps the service station.

  • Offset vs Inkjet - A Question of Gamut

Am interested to know which of these two process' has a larger gamut.
I had been under the impression modern injets (am thinking something like Epson UltraChrome or UltraChrome K3 inksets - the latter I believe is only a real advantage for B&W prints) had a larger gamut than your standard offset (4 colour cmyk on coated stock) printing and this was part of the reason they were so effective for contract proofs etc.
I may have spread some misinformation in another forum and would like to make good.
    Thoughts?

    Thanks Neilthat was my understanding.
From your opion/knowledge which I have a great deal of respect for would you agree then that the following is incorrect in today's situation?
i The fact of the matter is that the widest possible print gamut is available to press printing (of whatever type: offset lithography, gravure, or whatever) because these processes use true subtractive color inks. Inkjet printers, by contrast, generally use a dye based toner that simply does not have the same light absorbing characteristics as do true inks. This is the reason that many ink jets today use 6 and 8 color systems: the colors placed on the paper cannot perform their task and need assistance, especially for light tones.
i When printing on paper, the only light one can see is the light reflected from the surface of the paper. The best white paper reflects only about 80% of incident light, and every drop of ink on that paper absorbs some of that light, and so decreases the over all reflectance at that spot. True subtractive color ink (CMY) absorbs specific wavelengths of light:
cyan absorbs red and reflects everything except red light
Magenta absorbs green light and reflects everything else
yellow reflects all light except blue.
i The same is true of blacks. True lithographic black absorbs all light (Okay, it is not a true black body by any stretch, but it is as black as it comes), ink jet black is just sort-of-blackish.
i Inkjet dye based "inks", even when they are called Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, or Black. simply do not perform like that; they only emulate that activity. Sometimes one encounters pigment based "inks" for ink jet use. These color perform better (and are usually light fast longer) but they are still not true subtractive. A good demonstration of this is the ink jet's very poor performance in reproducing low percentage colors, like, say 2% - 5% process component colors. Modern ink jet fake these colors with 'light' color bottles.
    Cheers,
    Sam.

Hello,I'm wondering about the HP 26, for the DesignJet 600.  The site lists it as dye-based, but it's pretty water resistant, and the MSDS says it contains carbon black.   I would love to use a pigmented ink, but have heard conflicting things about this damaging the machine.  Thank you so much for providing your expertise!Melissa The HP 26 cartridge is pigment based, at least if you get a genuine HP one.  Third party products might use dye based ink.

  • Hp 564 dye based or pigment

    Hi,
I have a Hp printer that uses 564 cartridges. Are these dyed based or pigment?  I'm looking for a dye based printer to use for printing on washable fabrics. If the 564 are not dye based, can you recommend a printer that does use dye based ink. The use is for a small craft business so I'm looking for something fairly inexpensive (under 1000.00).
    Thanks!

  • Is HP61XL black for 1510 printer pigment or dye ink?

I want to know if the black ink is pigment or dye because I got into trouble on another printer switching between the two. I didn't know there was a difference. Don't want to make that mistake again. I also had bought remanufactured cartridges and swapped between the two. I ended up with a big mess and the printer wouldn't print despite numerous printhead cleanings. I had to send it back to manufacturer. So I want to make sure I buy the right ink whether or not its generic or HP.

    Hello @Jacqui27332 ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that you would like to know if the ink is pigment or dye.
    I would like to help.
According to the 61 ink specifications, it is Pigment-based.
    Hope this helps.

  • HP Designjet 500 - Change from WATER BASE INK to PERMANENT PIGMENT

Has anyone tried to change a printer designed to use water base dye inks to permanent pigment base ink? I have read some positive things and not so positive. Some say it clogs the print heads others have not found it to be so. Any ideas, input or personal experience with this topic?
As a footnote, the color BLACK is permanent pigment in printers that ARE water base printers. My primary purpose is to be able to print outdoor signage without laminating a print. Have you personally found a method to 'seal' the final print. If so - share with us what method you found useful. Did you brush a coating on it, spray a coating or find something brilliant that works? Tell us!

There are Designjet models that are designed to switch between pigment or dye based inks, but the change requires changing the ink supplies, the tubing and the printheads.  The models that support this also recognize the change and apply more servicing to the pigmented system to keep the printheads from clogging.
Putting pigmented ink into a system that was not designed for this would likely have very poor results and a very short head life.
That said, this forum is focused on consumer level products.  For the Designjet you may have better results posting in the HP Designjet forum here.

  • Pigment ink on HP Photosmart 7510

I understand that this printer has both dye and pigment inks.  I want to print on fabric, which requires pigment ink.  How do I force the printer to select pigment ink?  Is pigment ink available in colors other than black?  Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
I'm not aware of any software options that will force the text black over photo black.
One approach that might work would be to save the image into a Microsoft word document and print from there as a word document will use text black rather than photo black - I'm not sure if this will work but it could be worth a try.
