Dying Airport Express?  Can see network, but can't connect

I have an airport express bridged from my time capsule using wired ethernet. No problem with the TC. The AE will show up in the list of available networks (separate name) but I often can't connect to it using my iPhone. In Airport Utility I can't see it, either. The light is green, however.
If I unplug it and replug it, it works again, however, and can be seen by Airport Utility, my iPhone, and laptop. It had been working brilliantly for a year set up this way, and I've had it for 3+ years with no real issues.
Is this a dying AEx or are there other things I should look into.

Yes, if I set "Security" to "None," the G4 can connect. But I set it up after I found my next-door neighbor's shared files folder listed on my network this morning. He's an OK guy, but it made me aware of how vulnerable my network is.
My firmware is version 9.52. I've prowled the Apple site looking for an indication of whether that's the latest, but couldn't find one. My "Software Update" says everything's up-to-date.

  • Airport card can see networks but can't connect all of a sudden

I have an older MacBook running 10.6.8 (snow leopard) and it's been working fine. All of a sudden, it can see networks, but cannot connect. I get an alert with an exclamation point and "no Internet connection". My iPad can connect just fine; same network, same location as usual, so I know it's not an issue with the network/router (my husband's computer works fine as well). If my airport card went, I wouldn't be able to see any networks at all, right?  Is there anything I can do?  My AppleCare has run out, due to the age of my computer and I don't want to put hundreds into fixing it, either (nor can I afford it). Has anyone had this happen?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • Can see network but won't connect

I have three computers using an Airport Express base station. They've worked just fine until this morning, when I bumped up security by setting WPA/WPA2 Personal.
Since then, the Power PC G4 (OS X 10.4.11) can see the base station's network, but will not connect to it.
I've done multiple restarts, verified permissions, unplugged and replugged the base station and also the cable modem. Nothing has worked.
    Please help.

  • Mini can see network but can't join

So I have a mac mini that I am using headless and controlling via screen sharing from my imac. When I try to log the mini onto my 'n' network, it isn't able to join. I can see my network in the drop-down airport menu in the menu bar, but when I click on the network, the airport bars in the menu bar icon go 'grey' and I am not on the network.
It seems to be able to get onto my 'b/g' network without problems. Neither network has a password (I live out in the woods with no one around) so I don't think it is a security/password issue.
I have no idea how to go about troubleshooting this. Any thoughts?
    thanks

If you must connect your Mac Mini to a "pure" 802.11n network, check out solutions provided by QuickerTek as an alternative.

  • Can see network; but can't get on Web or get e-mail

iMac G3 has decided to change. It's on an office network. It can see all the users on the network, access the servers, access the printers, etc. However, can't connect to Web via IE nor can get e-mail. Any thoughts? I'm at a loss of what to look for.

    Hi Paperboy,
Check with your network admin, it may be that it needs a fixed IP address.
Normally DHCP sorts out IP address but every once in a while the network info may need to be entered manually.

  • Portege R830 can see network but can't connect - Error 628

    Hello,
I want to use my SIM-card to establish an internet connection on a Portege R-830.
Inserted the SIM-cad, started Toshiba Wireless manager, enter PIN, searching vor Network: "o2 surf" found, perfect signal strength
But then: Either it aborts the connection process after 10 sec. without a word, or it is able to connect but with no internet and a few sec later I get all kinds of errors ending with no connection found or no error at all.
In addition I tryed the orginal Connection Manager form O2 but same problem but he gives me an Error report:
You have been disconnected (error 628).
On my cellphone everything is fine.

    Ok, update:
I tryed another SIM (SIM B) with a simmilar mobile network(both o2 but internet via another protocol) , on another Portege R-830 with the same configuration and the same software and it worked.
So I reinstalled the software and driver on the first Laptop and I had a connection with SIM B.
But SIM A still didn't work. Inserted SIM B an now no connection either.
Reinstalled Toshiba Wireless manager en voil SIM B had internet connection....
my guess now is "it's the providers fault."

  • IPad 2 can see wifi but doesn't connect ... What's going on???

iPad 2 can see wifi but doesn't connect ... What's going on???

A few more things that you can try.
Turn WiFi off - restart the iPad - turn WiFi on again and then try to connect again. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Try to join again.
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Then select your WiFi network again and try to join again.
Go to Settings>WiFi>Tap on the arrow next to your network name and then tap on Forget this Network in the next window. Then back out of the setting and go back to WiFi and let the iPad find your home network and then tap on the network name and try joining it again.
Do the same thing as above except don't tap on Forget this Network - tap on Renew Lease at the bottom.

  • Apple TV can see library, but can not reach content after adding Roksbox on a Roku in another room.

I have my iTunes library on a power mag g5 running leopard. I have an Apple TV I have been using to access the content. I have since added an older Roku in a different room. I installed an app called Rokbox on the Roku that is able to stream content over the network. I had to start the web server and create soft links to the music and movie directories where the iTunes content resides. Now the Apple TV can see the library on the network but can not see the content. Please help.

    Hi All,
Same issue here. Just upgraded (?) from the previous version of Apple TV, to the new Apple TV2. Like others here, my main problems seem to be with unreliable streaming from iTunes 10 on my PowerMac (Quad G5, Leopard OSX).
My original AppleTV had no issues w/the wireless network, or synching w/my PowerMac.
The network connection from the ATV2 are fine, and have no issues accessing the Apple Store (for movies, TV shows), or accessing Netflix. The access to the internet from my ATV2 is quite robust.
My problems are with keeping a constant, reliable wireless connection to my PowerMac, via an Airport Extreme wireless router.
I have tried multiple restarts, reboots, reset ATV2 to original settings, tried different wireless channels on the Airport Extreme, verified I have Home Sharing properly enabled in iTunes, etc, but no luck so far.
What I'm seeing is when I access my iTunes on my computer, I can see my library, and then if I start to "shuffle songs" I may get 1 to 3 songs to play fine, but then the music stops, and I can no longer access the music/movies/etc in iTunes any longer. When I then go to my PowerMac, it has lost most bars of signal strength on the wireless network (although all other devices show strong signal strength), and I have to Turn AirPort Off, then Turn AirPort On and I then am reconnected to the wireless network with good signal.
I then go back to the ATV2, connect to my iTunes, start my music, and then 1-2 songs later it again stops playing, and I go through this all over again.
It seems as though there is something on the wireless network between the ATV2 and my PowerMac that causes it to lose connection, and I have to manually start again. The problem is that the connection is not robust, and only lasts a few minutes.
    Hope this gets solved soon.
    Regards
    Tom

  • How can I tell what is causing wifi to drop - airport express light is green (iPad can find network, but no internet connection) and TWC cable modem has usual lights glowing?

Everything seems normal, except getting the internet connection. I have an old airport express - 802.11g

Is it the iPad that is the only device that cannot connect to the Internet....and other wireless devices can connect OK.....or.....is it a case of none of the wireless devices being able to connect to the Internet?
One of the potential issues here is that the iPad cannot be used to make any configuration changes to the older version of the AirPort Express that you have, so hopefully you have another Mac there that could be used to make any changes if needed.

  • My old Airport Express wants to work but can't

So I've read a lot about Airport Express PSUs dying, but that isn't my issue here.
I bought this Express about 3 years ago. It worked great for the first 18 months as far as I can recall, we'd hold parties with Airplay streaming and everyone was really impressed.
I moved house and had no need for it so I lent it to my sister, who was in a wirless party house at the time. They could never get it to interact with their Netgear router properly so it just sat on the shelf for another 18 months. I've now moved into my sister's house and brought my Airport Extreme with me. We were hoping to live the Airport Express Airplay dream again and after some tikering and a hard rest I got the Airport up and running again and Airplay worked fine.
That was about 3 weeks ago.
2 weeks ago Airplay stopped working. It was cutting out and then it just gave up altogethor. Activating Airplay would cause the Airport Express to immediately go amber. With some tinkering I managed to have ti recover, I just had to keep Airplay running, manually go into the Airport Utility and convince the Airport to reset. By then the track tht ws playing might be about, oh, 3 minutes in. When the track changed to the next song, pfft, amber again. I maanged to recreate these situations several times.
But now, we're lucky if the thing works at all. I'm here in my bedroom on one bar of reception and my housemate Andrew has got, count em, three antennas coming out of his PCI wirless card for a single bar of reception, this is because the Airport Extreme is at the otehr end of the house. Every now and then the Airport Express splutters into action and we get something resembling a reliable connection. Unpluggin it and plugging it back in seems to do the trick. But it'll die again, solid amber.
So yeah, in summary an older Airport Express that had been reliable for years has deteriorated in 3 weeks. I don't know what to do, i can't afford a new one. Any suggestions are welcome, any requests for additional information/elaboration on parties will be answered.

Hello love4pugs...Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Most likely, you just didn't leave enough time to do a complete power recycle of your network components so that your Motorola modem can "recognize" the new device (AirPort Express) connected to it.
    Try the following...
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AirPort Router, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AirPort Router; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)

  • Airport Express listed in Itunes, but can't connect  (error -6753)

I had to reset my router (Linksys) and Airport Express yesterday. Everything is reconfigured, with one exception. I have a green light on my AE and itunes lists it in the speaker selection bar, but it can't connect. I also cannot connect to the AE using the admin tool. The admin tool lists the AE, prompts me for the password then fails. In both cases (itunes and admin tool) error -6753 is reported.
    Any ideas?

I can connect directly to Airport Express and stream via itunes. When I configure the Airport to connect to my new Dlink modem/router, the Airport light goes green, I can see it in iTunes as an option to select but when I select it, the "connecting to Airport.." box appears but it doesn't connect. I don't get an error message.
I've also tried configuring with no network security on the router but this had the same effect.
I'm having the EXACT same problem as nick.
I spent some time talking with support about this and basically concluded that it was an issue with the router (D-Link DIR-625). However, I've exhausted efforts with opening ports and even put the airport in the DMZ...still nothing. I'm hoping someone has some new info on this that doesn't involve a new router or rearranging equipment throughout the house

  • Airport Express has green light but can't be seen in airport express

I had something odd happen with my wifi network today. I have reset everything and gotten all my Airport Expresses (AE) working again except one.  This AE can not be seen in the Airport Utility (AU) no matter what I do.  I have brought it into the same room as the transmitter and it would still not be seen.  So I connected it to an ethernet cable and when I did the light turned green but still nothing in the AU.  Each time I have changed configurations I have attempted to let the AE attempt to start on its own, I have performed a soft, hard reset and then a factory reset.
This is an older device (b/g not n as I recall) - what am I missing? It is difficult to determine if the device actually resets but the light blinking seems to match with descriptions of the process on the web.  This all worked yesterday and this morning until my network went haywire (only the 2.4 GHz signal went out, I changed channels and reset and it has stayed up since). All the othe Airport devices could be reconnected by a hard reset after which they appeared in the AU and I could then reconfigure.  This one AE just will not cooperate.
    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

The model number is A1084 and I am using version 7.6.1 of AU.
When I attempted the hard reset the list starts off amber then after 5-10 seconds the amber light flashes rapidly and that is when I remove the paper clip I am using to push the button.  Afterwards it goes solid amber for a bit then flashes amber.  If the devices is not plugged into the ethernet it stays flashing amber, it it is connected to the ethernet it goes steady green
When I attempted the factory reset it is solid yellow for quite awhile then I get a rapid flashing green light at which time I remove the paper clip. It then goes back to amber for awhile then flashes amber.  If the devices is not plugged into the ethernet it stays flashing amber, it it is connected to the ethernet it goes steady green.
In neither case does it appear in AU.  Also FYI I am running Mountain Lion although everything has worked fine until yesterday.
    Thanks for the reply

  • Seeing network but can't connect to internet or email

    Hi there
We just installed a Linksys Wireless-N after having trouble with our Airport Express base stations. We connected the Linkysys through our cable modem and desktop PC. Our PC laptop is connecting fine, but I cannot get my MAC laptop to connect. It is seeing the network (which was a WEP password) but will not connect to the internet or email. The Airport status is showing green.
    Please help@ Thanks.

The "N" function of the Linksys must be disabled.

  • Airport Express joined to network but not discoverable

I have two airport expresses - an older b/g model and a newer draft n model - both on their latest firmwares.
December last year I joined them both to the wireless network in a new place and both worked fine.
I hadn't used either since December - so there my have been some airport utility and itunes updates since then.
Today I plugged either one in and it synched with a green light immediately - however neither could be found in itunes or airport utility.
I have tied configuring them - both wirelessly and via ethernet cable.
I have tried a hard reset to restore to factory default and then configure them.
They can only be found by airport utility and iTunes under these circumstances:
    1. After a hard reset to factory settings - awaiting initial configuration
    2. Configured as it's own wireless network
    3. Joined to the existing wireless network via ethernet only (WiFi off).
If I join to existing wireless network as I need to do the device is not discoverable.
I input the correct credentials and then the device reboots - at this stage it drops out of the airport utility and never gets picked up by it even though it reboots with a green sync light, indicating it is now joined to the network.  Only way to still see it after reboot is if it is still attached to computer over ethernet. As soon as ethernet is disconnected it dropsout.
I would think it was not broadcasting a wireless signal were it not for the fact that it does work when set up as its own wireless network, and also were it not for the fact that it was doing it to two different airport expresses, both different models.
I have two laptops - one on leopard and the other on snow leopard and still no luck- so I don't think it is an OS update issue.
I have never had trouble configuring AEX joined to an existing network before and they both were working December last year.
So in summary: two different model AEX displaying the same behaviour, two mac laptops with different OS' used to configure, tried wireless and ethernet configurations, reboot after configuration gives green sync light but is not discoverable in itunes or airport utility. Airports ARE discoverable when broadcasting their own wireless network or joined to network over ethernet only. Airports are discoverable after hard reset to factory settings but become invisible when correctly joined to an existing wireless network after reboot.
Please help - it is driving me crazy!!!

I'm not trying to set it up as a network.
I just want to be able to play iTunes on my hifi.
The Airport Express is currently sat right next to an Huawei HG532 router with a solid green light.
However both iTunes and Airport utility says: "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport Wireless devices.... make sure it's plugged in etc...."
Never had a problem before, but i've just plugged it in after a 4 month absence.
