Dying screen

I already posted this to a different thread and was pointed here, so apologise for doubling up.
I have a pretty new intel iMac. Over the last month or so it has developed a number of quirks. First off was kernel panic, then an occasional relutance to turn on. These stopped for a few weeks but now I keep getting instant screen death. That's it, the screen goes black although the machine still hums quietly o itself and even has a go at reading the CD drive. I've run the hardware check which, when it doesn't freeze says things are ok, I've tried doing a clean re-install but get the blck screen of death before getting passed the checking the disk stage. I'm starting to suspect the RAM, they are the ones that came with the machine, anybody else had this, any suggestions. I'll send this before it crashes again. Thanks.

Hi Jimmymack!
Check the System Profiler's listing of the "Boot ROM Version" and the "SMC Version" against the Firmware Update's Read-Me to verify that your Core Duo iMac's firmware and SMC firmware are up-to-date, or if you have a Core 2 Duo, you only need to check the firmware. If necessary, update the firmware or the SMC firmware (one at a time). http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303903
Once it's up-to-date, reset the SMC by following these instructions: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Since it's an absolutely no-risk procedure, it may be repeated several times until one feels certain they've done all they can with that possible solution.
If it's then necessary to find another solution, try a single PRAM reset. It's NOT something you would do every day - but to reset the PRAM:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Start up the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You should press this key combination immediately after the startup chord sounds, and certainly before the gray screen's Apple logo appears.
5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time. The PRAM reset will reset your sound level preference to the mid-point, so the second time may well sound more or less loud than the first.
6. Release the keys.
Also reset will probably be Startup Disk in System Preferences.
I don't really believe any of the above will help, though they might (one never knows), as your description still sounds like it's most likely a RAM seating problem, as every symptom you mentioned fits that scenario. That doesn't make it so since they probably fit a bad logic board scenario as well, but you can easily confirm or deny the loose RAM all by yourself if you wish, or have Apple do it when you take it in for repair, which otherwise it's most certainly going to need. Good luck:)

  • My IBook G4 died, Screen goes through some colors then nothing

It was running ok, I put it to sleep, then this morning it would not turn on. Nothing. I tried taking battery out and put it in and the screen displayed, orange then green, then blue then white then black. No hard drive sound. Yery dead. Same with external power. Bot a little over 1 year ago so warantee gone. Suggestions?

Logicboard failure, prepare for a hefty bill. It could also be that you cracked one of the video chips, how do you handle it? If you pick it up by the lower left corner occasionally, this will happen, apple still hasn't admitted this is a problem, but there has been thousands.

  • My iPhone 5c has completely died. screen black, I have tried reboot but unsuccessful

I tried using my iPhone 5c and found it dead , screen went blue then black. I tried reboot still phone is dead.
I recently updated to iOS 8.0.2.  Any help please?  Ken

    Hi
You can try a soft reset holding the home and power buttons together until the apple logo appears, If no luck then you can try booting into recovery mode see below. This will wipe the phone and then allow you to restore from a previous back up.
If nothing works then contact apple or book a genius appointment you should be offered and free repair or replacement if you are still within your warrenty period.
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    Hope this helps

  • Help Help! Screen just died (pics attached)

I have a 20' iMac G5 that I got about 3 years ago. When I went back to my computer after dinner tonight, the screen looked like this (look at links for pics). I had used the computer 2 hours beforehand and the screen was working fine. I have never dropped it or anything; it has basically been sitting in the same spot for 3 years and hasn't received any damage. What is going on? I looked all over this board for anything related to my problem and couldn't find anything. I tested around with this dying screen and found out that I can still log on and I can hear the sounds when i change the volume. So I'm thinking just the screen is crazy. I really need this computer seeing as it has all my work and all my music (very very important). What is going on with my screen? Is there any way to fix it? If it is impossible to fix, how can I get my music and other things onto an external hard drive?

Sorry to say this, but it looks like your LCD panel went bad. If you have AppleCare that is still in effect, submit a report to AppleCare right away.
Also do this - Shut down your iMac. Connect an external display. Restart your iMac. If the external display works, then there is a problem with either the LCD panel or the Inverter in your iMac.
Assuming the external display works, you can use it to run your iMac while you back up your music & other data. Or just keep using the external display. Replacing the LCD panel is not cheap.

  • Help! N95 8GB Horizontal Lines on LCD Screen getti...

I was getting a few horizontal lines across my screen of my N95 8GB. Switching the slider from portrait to landscape doesn't change the direction of the lines.
The lines have been getting progressively thicker to the point where now it's hard to read anything on the phone.
Do I have a dying screen?
I've take the slider apart, detached and reattached the screen and ribbon cable connector, and it doesn't make any difference.
Should I buy a replacement screen or is there something else that could be wrong? The rest of the phone functions perfectly fine.
    aloha,

    Hi calciumicon,
It would probably be best to have your device checked by a Nokia Care point. From what you describe it might be the screen needs to be replace. The N95 is a model which has been out of production for a while though so check to verify it can still be repaired.

  • Laptop died... can I rescue files from Time Machine back up and transfer to my kids iMac?

Hi. Not sure this is the right forum, could not find a Time Machine forum.
My 18 month old white Macbook has died (screen and track pad). I cannot afford a new one. I have a time machine backup. Is there a way to either
    1. Take the HDD from the laptop and put it into an external HDD enclosuer, plug it into someone else Mac and access my Pages folders etc.
    2. Or can I swap out a HDD from another macbook, install the HDD from the dead macbook and use it as normal...
    3. Plug in my TM backup into another mac and (kids have macbooks and iMacs) and access my pages folders etc...
    4. Or do some other combination of things to get up and running until I can buy another machine?
Many, many thanks for your help.

As long as the machine that is recovering the drive is not older than what's on the drive, and it has enough room to support all the contents of the drive it should work with the Migration Assistant.   Otherwise a piecemeal recovery may be needed.

  • Saving old notes from iPad to new iMac?

My old ipad is about to die (screen getting blurry) and I would like to save all its notes to my imac.
    How should I do that??

Go to iPad >> Settings >> iCloud and make sure you are signed in. Then switch the Notes setting to ON. This will sync your Notes up to iCloud.
Then go to your iMac >> System Prefs >> iCloud, make sure you are signed in and tick the box for Notes. This will sync the Notes from iCloud to your desktop Notes application.
You must be running  at least OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, as Notes is part of that.

  • Buying used

Hey guys, this is my first attempt moving over from PC to Mac, and I have to say I am VERY excited (after doing all of my research). I have a few questions, and I hope you'll be able to help me out!
    1) I am going to probably buy used, because I can find them way cheaper, and I use ksl.com and/or craigslist.org. My question is: when I meet these people in person to test out the computer (Macbook Pro 2009 series) before I buy it, what are specific things I should be looking for? Are there any tests you would run, or programs you would try to use, or something physical to look for (dying screens, etc) that I should do to make my decision whether or not to buy it? I'm not talking about specific specs (RAM, HD capacity, etc) as I have already made up my mind, I am talking about specific things I can do right there in person to make sure the computer runs well.
    2) Also, I am trying to debate between iLife and MS Office. I have read on many different websites, and they seem to be pretty equal, but I am wondering what YOU have found to be more useful.
Thanks again for all of your help!

There is so much that can go wrong with Macbook Pros. You should be very wary about a used recent Macbook Pro that is likely to cost quite a lot of cash.
Personally I would look at the Apple refurbished store. It won't be as cheap but it comes with the full 1 year warranty that a truly new MBP would come with.
If you were buying a Mac Pro or Mini or even iMac I'd say go for it, but there is so much that can go wrong with laptops these days (after AND before they leave the factory) that I wouldn't take the risk, unless the seller gave me plenty of time to boot it up and see it working.
I suppose the tests to perform would be:
    1) Check the screen
    2) run a 3D benchmark / stress test for a couple of hours (to check the GPU)
    3) Check every port, including the mini DVI
    4) listen to the sounds the computer makes when in operation
    5) check that the battery charges.
The list could go on, and if you are not experienced with Mac hardware I would advise you to take an expert with you.
Is this for reals? Are there really lots of problems that have been going on with the latest Macbook Pros? I wasn't aware of that...so would I be better to get a last-year model? Because I have found some really good deals on last-season's Macbook Pros (the ones right before 'unibody' Macbooks). Would that be a better deal?

  • Touch crashes when after trying to play any app after i play my 15th app

The title explains it, if i play my 15th app (Scratch) and then play another app, it makes a line down the screen then goes to the apple logo. I can force restore, but it's annoying. I read another post yesterday with a person who had the same problem as me, but he didn't get an answer.
I would really like some help please!

I am also getting multiple crashes to the "restore" screen but have not seen the line.... just a dying screen (grey to black) and then to "Apple Logo".

  • Erratic ibook, signs of a bigger problem????

Hi, had a post about a week ago outlining the slow start up of my now 5 week old ibook. There just seems to be one small problem after another, its still really slow booting up sometimes, but sometimes its ok. So as other people suggested i have been putting it to sleep, but then twice this week when i have tried to wake it, the screen freezes for about 2 minutes, then suddenly works fine. However today it did not, it froze the screen for about two minutes with the hard drive slowly ticking like a clock (about that speed) and then it just died (screen went black and i couldnt turn it on) so i removed the battery and started it again. I then ran the hardware test from the boot disk, and this said there were no problems, as did disk utility. Then when i restarted the computer it was slow but loaded up. I saved long and hard to buy this computer (my first ever) and am wondering if these are just normal problems im going to have to live to expect, or are they signs of a bigger problem????? Thanks for any advice...

If you suspect something may be wrong with the hard drive, see if you can boot first. If not, get an external hard disk which is the same size or larger and Firewire, and Prosoft Data Rescue to make sure any data you can get is recovered from that hard drive.
http://www.prosofteng.com/ is where to get Data Rescue from.
Once you know you have a backup of all data, then try to repair the directory of the main drive. Sometimes that will fix a gray screen boot. If it doesn't, and Disk Warrior won't either, then I would replace the hard drive. Rudimentary directory repair can be done following these directions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Complete replacement of the directory can be done with Disk Warrior from http://www.alsoft.com/
    Good luck!

  • Serious blurry display

hi everybody! it feels great to find such a warmful place when you're at a loss! wandered around to find an answer in the boards about my current problem but couldn't find it.
my vintage first(or is it 2nd?) edition bondi blue ran smoothly 'til now, though i mainly use it now as a backup set running on a steady 8.6 to burn archive cd's, print stuff etc.
tonight i started downloading about 4gig files from my powerbook to the bondi (which holds a 8gig HD) but when i came back (after 3 gigs transferred succesfully) the bondi display was surprisingly blurry, like thick goggles blurry, though the brightness, colors or general looks were ok and fonctions seemed to be fine too (i rebooted but it looked the same then shut it off -but didn't dare to re-start it yet).
other sign: ventilation was pretty loud.
could this occurred because of memory limitations? (as the HD was maybe already almost full- though i guess a message would have warned me about it) or is it an obvious goodbye-sign from a dying screen tube?
if so, is it still possible to use the machine thru an xtra screen or should i start looking for another pal?
    thanks for your help
imac bondi blue   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

you could try zapping the pram but i dont think its going 2 do much its on start up hold command option p r until you hear the chime 3 times but persionaly it sounds a little more like the analog board if you want to check you can pop off the back off your imac and plug in a external moniter and see if its clear if it is you found your problem and if it is so what it would still have a good processor just use an external moniter.

  • Wallstreet (M4753) Won't Power-up!! (After PMU Reset)

Problem: The Wallstreet "died" (Screen slowly faded then power shut down) while I was trying to install a new IDE hard-drive. I have removed the hard-drive totally so I can focus on re-booting from DVD Drive. To restart I have tried:
    1) The 4 key PMU reset command -- causes Wallstreet fan to run, LED blink, and then all stops.
    THEN:
    2) Holding the Power button down while holding "C," but doesn't produce any activity of drive, Processor, fan anything!
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Sumer,
If you do not have a startup chime, the powerbook's Start Manager is not passing its startup hardware test. Since the screen slowly faded and the powerbook shut down, I can only assume you have had a hardware failure.
This is what Apple recommends for a no-start (battery and power adapter can be eliminated as culprits):
Disconnect internal keyboard and try powering up unit. If unit powers up, replace keyboard.<<</div>
I would say this has zero possibility of being the failure. Performing a successful power manager reset usually eliminates the keyboard.
Verify that microprocessor card is firmly seated in connector.<<</div>
    Replace sound card.<<</div>
This is the DC/sound card which has the power adapter port. Even if this fails, the battery should still power up the 'book. Also, if the battery charges, this card is probably OK.
    Replace power supply card.<<</div>
    Replace PMU card.<< </div>
    Replace I/O logic board.<<</div>
    Replace microprocessor card.<<</div>
I have no idea how the user tests for a failure in the last four components. If you really like your Wallstreet, you might spend $60-100 to have someone diagnose it, then buy/replace the parts yourself.

    OK. If you believe that.
When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.
