Dying to understand what my issue is here!

I was given an iMac, and was told if I could fix it, I could have it. iMac/iSight G5 17" w/ 10.4.11. I was told the machine had a few bad capacitors. He said he was using the machine and it restarted, and never would load again.
When I got the machine, it would come up to the spinning gear, with an apple in background, but wouldn't load. After hundreds of tries, I tried to boot into safe mode. I found out there was a password on the account, so I gave up. When I turned the machine on the next day, it booted up to the Mac OS X login screen like nothing had ever happened. I'm able to use the Mac, however, Safari quits unexpectedly, loses bookmarks and history.
Permissions have slowly somehow been changed to where I can nearly do nothing. Any attempt to correct permissions freezes the computer.
The last time it froze, it started me up at the "Welcome to your new iMac" screen, and made me enter my information. All previous user information was deleted inadvertently.
In my training, which never covered Mac, this kind of problem was nearly always software. Does this sound like a capacitor issue? Any light that could be shone on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
I do not have the install disc that came with this computer, I was also wondering what the best solution is for that? Thanks in advance!

I'm afraid that Apple are totally justified in charging what is a nominal sum for discs that you should already possess. Blame the person who gave you the computer without the discs, which should always accompany any computer that is passed on to someone else. The fact that you were given the computer makes your complaint even less understandable.
I won't be blaming anyone due to the circumstances. The person who "gave" me the computer owes me alot of money. So I've paid for this computer, "gave" is not the right word. And I absolutely agree, keep and take care of your discs.
I just think it should be available online, even if it is at the same price. Persons with disabilities can truly struggle to take care of discs. I'm sure somewhere somebody shares this frustration. I was not trying to make a complaint. I was suggesting a second option that I figured might be available.
I bought the disc without saying a word, and treated the person on the phone with respect.
Is popping open the computer and examining the caps the only good way to tell if my issues are cap related?
Thnx MGW

I must be retarded because this is simple - a line is scanned - it's parsed into an integer and it's supposed to go through some if/else statements and change my variables based on what my input is -
Everything works up to the if else statements - but I can't for the love of all that is holy understand why it keeps outputting the place holder values and not the manipulated values - eh, here's my code.
    I've been trying an input on 12 which should yield max int = 12, pos count = 1, neg sum = 0, odd sum = 0 but it only gives 1, 1, 1, 1

Java does not dynamically change your variables.
    int x = 10;
    int y = x;
x = 50;At the end of this code y will still be 10 even though the value of x has changed. That is what you are doing. You initially assign some value to result but then it never changes even though some of the other variables in the code have been changed.

  • Can't Understand What's Going on Here

I have a right-to-left, facing pages document I'm working on, the first 4 pages I've numbered with roman numerals, they won't be showing anyway so that's not important, the problem is I started new section numbering on the fifth page but when I do so it shows the fifth page to be on the right when in fact it is on the left?
You can take a look at the image below, shouldn't it be saying: Introd1     iv, and not: iv     Introd1?
The triangle for the new section is showing iv although the new section starts on page 5, mind you, if I actually double click on any of these two pages in the pages panel it will display the correct page, my headache is why it's showing them like that? Have I done somehting wrong in the master pages or something? Also, I can't figure out how to export these pages to PDF, it keeps refusing, saying I've entered the wrong numbers. I enter: Introd1-4, to try and print pages 1-4 from the Introd section, but it doesn't let me.
Anyway, here's a screenshot, hope someone can help:

Just to clarify further, it is only in the pages panel where this mistake is showing, and within the pages panel itself it is literally just the labels that are incorrect not the pages themselves, the icons for the pages are showing the correct page on each side. If I click on the left page it will show me the correct left page, same with the page on the right, just the labelling underneath for that spread is messed up. Also in the main application window, this problem isn't occurring in the page numbering, for example below you can see that the left page is selected which in the pages panel is labelled as 4 but which in actual fact is Introd1:
But in the application window, it's displaying the correct page reference:
I made an additional new section just to check further, but same thing:

  • I am getting an incessant error 404 message: I don't understand what the issue is or how to correct it

    THe message reads:
The URL https://calendar.google.com/calendar/dav/[email protected]/user///calendar.google.com/calendar/dav/[email protected]/user/ encountered HTTP error 404. Make sure the URL is correct.
It's really annoying; I can disable the account altogether I think, but I'd rather have a gmail linked calendar.  I just have no idea how to fix this error.

Running the Lion Os requires a MINIMUM of 2 GB of RAM, as you have.  However, with that little RAM the computer will have trouble with many memory based tasks, such as copying and pasting.  You really need to increase the amount of RAM your computer has in order to increase its speed and performance.  Now, when a task requires more RAM than your system has available then the OS will use some harddrive space temporarily instead.  This is called "Virtual Memory."  Is it possible that at this time that your harddrive is very full relative to its stated capacity, so that even "virtual memory" is not really available?  If that is the case, you really need to cleanup your harddrive by deleting a fair number of less used files.
    Hope this helps

  • What am I missing here: Canopus ADVC110 Footage vs. CS6?

My church uses the subject Canopus device to capture DV (avi) footage to hard disk.  I've successfully edited this footage from this workflow for years in CS4 and CS5 (skipped 5.5).  When CS6 arrived, I attempted to use it, but quickly switched back to CS5 due to the issue I am about to describe.  I want to finally switch over to CS6 now (and to CC soon, I hope), so I very much want to understand what the issue is with CS6.  Here's the issue:
I've narrowed this down to the original footage AVI files captured from the Canopus. As soon as PP begins to conform the footage, it hangs for a very long time.  Initially, the small preview thumb displays an image.  The conforming progress bar displays (but no progress). But the monitor displays the footage as offline. During this time, any click in the PP window yields a "(not responding)" suffix in the title bar. Eventually, given enough time, the video footage appears and scrubs, but without audio, the audio waveform, and with no conforming progress bar.  There are no error messages during this time.  Given the time consumed and lack of audio, I have not proceeded any further in the edit.
I suspect this is a x64 codec issue with the Canopus.  Does anyone have experience with this workflow and this problem?  Is the solution software or hardware?  Do I need to replace the Canopus?  If so, I need recommendations please.
    Thank you very much.

New info: I do have another (HP z400, WIN7 x64) machine with CS6 that exhibits similar behavoir as the other with the Canopus footage.  My user on this one is in the Admin user group.  I don't get the "not responding" suffix in the title bar.  But the conforming progress bar does not move.  When I go to close PP, i get this message:
"Metadata writing in progress. Are you sure you want to exit?"
When I click yes, the "not responding" suffix appears and I have to force close PP.  The clip apparently does not have any metadata - at least none appear in the Metadata tab in PP.  Perhaps this is a significant clue.
Also, we use Windows Movie Maker to capture the footage to DV avi.  Low tech, I know.

  • LibMagickCore-Q16.so.7 - Trying to understand what happened

    Hi,
I'm relatively new to arch and I'm no experienced C compiler, but anyway I want to understand how my linux distro works under the hood and what went wrong, when I simply typed 'pacman -Syu'. Perhaps someone can help me The situation is as follows:
I was playing aroud with the upcoming release of rails, building an app, that uses the 'rmagick' gem (freakin cool ruby way to say 'package'; in case you don't know). But upgrading my arch as usual, for a few days now my rails server doesn't start anymore, instead saying:
/home/jan/.rbenv/versions/2.0.0-p0/lib/ruby/gems/2.0.0/gems/activesupport-4.0.0.beta1/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:228:in `require': libMagickCore-Q16.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory - /home/jan/.rbenv/versions/2.0.0-p0/lib/ruby/gems/2.0.0/gems/rmagick-2.13.2/lib/RMagick2.so (LoadError)
    But:
    $ ls -l /home/jan/.rbenv/versions/2.0.0-p0/lib/ruby/gems/2.0.0/gems/rmagick-2.13.2/lib/RMagick2.so
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 jan users 528487 Mar 9 04:22 /home/jan/.rbenv/versions/2.0.0-p0/lib/ruby/gems/2.0.0/gems/rmagick-2.13.2/lib/RMagick2.so
So this file seems to exist at all.
And a quick search on my file system yields
$ sudo find / -iname "*libmagickcore*"
    /usr/lib/libMagickCore-6.Q16.so.1.0.0
    /usr/lib/libMagickCore-6.Q16.so.1
    /usr/lib/libMagickCore-6.Q16.so
So (for me) it seems, that there is a naming problem with this so called .so file (compare to the " libMagickCore-Q16.so.7" part in the error above). I read in another forum concerning a similiar problem to do some magic with 'ldconfig' and I tried this, but this didn't help, too. I also read some stuff about symlinking files. But I don't want to do this since I don't know, what I'm doing with that. I'd rather like to understand what's going wrong here. Can someone help? Or can I provide further information that's helpful?
    Thanks
    Jan

the error message means that /home/jan/.rbenv/versions/2.0.0-p0/lib/ruby/gems/2.0.0/gems/rmagick-2.13.2/lib/RMagick2.so NEEDS libMagickCore-Q16.so.7 , and that is the file that doesn't exist.
the libMagickCore-6.* files belong to the imagemagick program.
A search for libMagickCore-Q16.so.7 shows that imagemagick changed the library naming , starting with version 6.8.0-8
These links will give more info :
    http://www.cmake.org/Bug/view.php?id=13859
    http://www.imagemagick.org/discourse-se … =3&t=22352
you can try building rails against the new version, but if ruby is build through CMake that won't work unless you use  a git version or CMake 2.8.11 is released.
A temp workaround would be to revert to the last version of imagemagick before the change was made.
Look at the changes for arch imagemagick to figure out which version that would be.
(pacman log can also help with this).

  • Location of profile -- need to understand what happened here

I just resolved a data recovery crisis with my bookmarks. Although the crisis is over, I don't understand an important aspect of what happened, and I need to resolve this to be entirely confident of my data's safety.
Last week my computer contracted a virus. My attempts to remove it have been unsuccessful so far, so I fell back to an alternate version of Windows XP that I keep on my computer for that purpose. I have a separate data disk and configure all of my applications to store their data there, so this should be a nearly complete workaround -- all I lack is new software that I've installed since I created the backup partition.
As I checked out the system after booting, I looked at my Firefox bookmark file and was flabbergasted to find that its time stamp was over three years old.
I did some research and discovered that when Firefox went to version 3 it replaced the bookmark file with a database stored in a "profile" in the Application Data directory. I wasn't aware of that, so I never reconfigured Firefox to move the profile to my data disk.
This looked very, very bad. It looked like I'd said goodbye to all the bookmarks I've collected since I created the backup system until I got my infected system working again.
To make the best of it, I deleted the useless bookmark file and moved the Firefox profile from my system disk to my data disk, where it should have been all along.
Then I started Firefox (this system is running version 4) and found that all of my bookmarks were there, right up to the one that I added yesterday with instructions for removing the particular virus I'm dealing with.
    How did it do that?
I first thought there must be another profile on the data disk, but I searched the whole disk for one of the file names in the profile, and found only the one I had just created. Later I realized that even if there were another profile, that wouldn't explain what had happened. Firefox is now using the one that I just created -- I checked the timestamps to confirm that they were being updated -- and I copied it from a system drive in a partition that hasn't been used for months. I'm delighted to have all of my bookmarks, but they seem to arrived where I need them by magic. What could have happened here?

auscompgeek, I appreciate your effort to help. Either your response doesn't address the question, or I don't understand it.
Here's how it looks to me: places.sqlite is part of the profile, i.e., it is one of the files in the directory that contains the profile. I've explained what happened to that directory. The fact that the bookmarks are stored in this particular file is true, but doesn't explain anything.
I searched my data disk for this file on the chance that there was a stray copy of it somewhere, not in a complete profile directory that contained the file I originally searched for. I found it only in the new profile that I created after discovering the problem.
So this issue still appears to be unresolved.

  • Having issues with text etc. shifting in preview. Any ideas as to what is going on here?

When I place type or other items on a page, they shift in Muse preview and when previewing in a browser. Size and placement of the text are incorrect. Why are these items not lining up as they did in the Design panel in Muse? I even tried creating a blank page with only some text center to make sure it wasn't something else in my page. One would think this would be a basic feature of Muse. Having items show up where you actually placed them. What am I missing here? My layout looks fine until I preview. I'm new to Muse, so maybe I'm missing something in my setup. Thanks in advance!
Looks fine here. This particular page has a full screen video background via a widget. But even on a blank page I have the same issue.
Then in Previewing it all shifts and the text seems scaled down.

This is for imessage and not text message,  this can occur when people are sharing the same apple id.
On each devices go to settings - message - send&receive - either uncheck or remove the apple id.

  • One of the computers on my homesharing network is automatically downloading purchases even though settings are not checked for this to occur?  What am I missing here?  BTW only one of the three computers (pc) is doing this.

We have three computers (two pcs and one mac) on our home sharing network. When I buy a song on my pc it is automatically downloading it to my husband's pc - but not my daugher's mac.  The settings on each library do not indicate any items should automatically download.  What am I missing here?  This is  a relatively recent thing I just noticed.  It was not always happening in this way.  Help.  Both pcs are on Windows 7.  Thanks in advance for any help.  My husband and I don't always like the same songs so I need help to get back to marital bliss....

I think I found the answer to my own problemin case anyone experienced the same thing.  There is a separate spot in itunes under preferences to allow for automatic downloads from other devices.  It seems unrelated to home sharing.  I unchecked the boxes under the "store" section and that appears to have taken care of the issue.

  • Acrobat XI Pro shows as installed, but I can't find it anywhere in my list of programs to use it. What am I missing here?

I purchased Adobe Creative Cloud. I chose to download and installs 4 of the apps including Acrobat XI Pro. All apps are working great except Acrobat Pro. It shows as installed, but I can't find it anywhere in my list of programs. What am I missing here?
