  • Installing firefox on usb to use with ubuntu os

    Hi,
I want to install FF on a USB and use it when running UBUNTU (live).
I doubt if the Windows version will run, can you recommend a site that will supply a version that will run under this OS.Thanks
    A
Ps. I want to install it separately so I can update the browser.

    Hi,
    Me again.
I take your point about not being able to write to CD-R. But I would expect to able to write to CD-RW. However, I have saved to a pendrive.
I have downloaded the tar.bz2 file and have checked the md5 hash. The hash in the programme is the same as that printer in the hashes directory. I assume that the hashes in the programme are calculated each time the hash compare programme is activated?
I did wonder about hackers however. Suppose a hacker cracked the FF website then substituted there own programme, say FF-Virus, then changed the hash in th hash directory. Presumably, we would think our programme is sound.
I wonder if the problem with hashes is more to do with the possibility of cracking websites?
    Best wishes.

  • Dual boot with Ubuntu 13.0 using bootable USB problem (Y410P)

Hi I recently bought Lenovo Y410P and have been since trying for hours to dual boot with Ubuntu but I was unsuccessful.
I formatted by USB drive in FAT format, and created a bootable usb using Pendrive. Then I changed the Boot Mode to Legacy Support and the boot order so it boots from the flash storage first.
Then it hung on a purple screen like this: http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/3509/dgfdgrunningoraclevmvir.png
and the keyboard doesn't work and I couldn't go any further from here.
So I tried to use a different program called Unetbootin, and the problem got worse and it just stopped working at the option screen where you select whether to just try Ubuntu or install it, etc.
I read it somewhere the recent version of Unetbootin doesn't work, so I got the 474 version of it, and finally I was able to select from the option menu and it didn't hang. However when I clicked on Install Ubuntu, it just stopped there for a while, and then the boot failed and moved onto Windows 8 again.
I looked at the USB drive, and I realized the folder and some config files are names isolinux instead of syslinux, so I changed them, and now I'm getting the "SYSLINUX 3.86 2010..." words on the black screen and it hangs there.
I saw a similar message before using Pendrive and it was like "SYSLINUX 4.10 2012...". That was because the flash drive wasn't formatted in FAT (it was FAT32). So I re-checked the drive, but it is indeed formatted in FAT so I'm not sure why now I'm getting a similar message.
It will be much appreciated if you could give me some suggestions as to how to solve this problem.
    Thanks

Something else you could try.  Not sure it will make any difference.
Skip the boot creation tools and just boot the thing in UEFI mode.
Use the latest (12.10 or later will work, IIRC) 64-bit Ubuntu ISO.  Format your flash drive as a single FAT32 partition.  Extract the contents of the ISO to the flash drive.  Use 7zip for Windows, or your favorite Linux de-archiving tool.  That's it.
[edit] I don't believe the partition needs to be set active, but haven't tested that.
Set BIOS boot mode to UEFI.  Even secure boot mode should work withe a new enough Ubuntu - but isn't necessary.
Give that a try.  If it still barfs at the same place, mess around with the start-up graphics options.

  • E1550 - unable to access USB drive with Ubuntu

I am probably overlooking something real obvious but after screwing around for two hours I figure I need some help.
I am running Ubuntu 14.04. I have set up the E1550 router with an external drive that I formatted with the router utility. At this point I do NOT have an internet connection hooked to the router - I am not sure I want to for now. What I would like to do is to be able to access, wirelessly, a drive that multiple users can use to back up their important files onto.
I have tried using anonymous disk read/write access as well as creating shares. All the features seem to be setting up ok but at this point I have no clue how to access the drive.
I have tried using the Ubuntu files utility and then selecting 'browse network' followed by selecting 'windows network'. Alas, 'windows network' is an empty file with no drive present.
I have tried accessing the router wirelessly and also hard wired - no joy.
Am I maybe not acessing the drive properly through Ubuntu? Do I need to mount the remote drive rather than accessing it through the windows network ?
Thanks in advance for any pointers given !
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I am not expert with Ubuntu OS but have you tried to map the drive on your computer? I have no idea how to do that using Ubuntu but if you're using Windows or Mac, you can simply follow the steps from Linksys KB. It usually helps me when I am trying to enable file-sharing capabilities within my network.

  • Infinity won't work wirelessly with Ubuntu OS

I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and upgraded my BT broadband to Infinity on 28.12.11, using the same HomeHub3 that worked perfectly well with the old Total service.
It doesn't work, wirelessly. I can get an apparently strong connection, but its agonisingly slow. At the same time, an ethernet connection works well, When I switch from one to the other and test the speed, I can watch the bandwidth fall away (i.e.: it isn't immediately disconnected.)
Nobody at BT can or will help, telling me that Ubuntu is 'unsupported' (i.e.: it's my problem). I reported this problem to BT - ref: xxxxxx-xxxxxx - via its complaints form on 28.12.11, but have had no response.
I've spent much time this past week on internet help forums. It transpies that BT has known about this issue with Ununtu for six months, but has apparently done nothing about it and cannot suggest a solution.
Suggested workarounds from other Ubuntu users involve manually reconfiguring one's connection, but my netbook won't allow me to apply the changed settings, or to change the router settings from N to G tech., but that only worked temporarily for me and, besides, my netbook is only a couple of year old.
When I was sold Infinity, nobody mentioned that it doesn't work with Ubuntu. Frankly, I feel it was mis-sold as I intended to increase the bandwidth of my Total account and was persuaded to take Infinity on the grounds that it's a superior service for the same price. Not from where I sit, it isn't.
The only solution I can see is to get BT to switch me back to their Total service, which suited me fine. I'm going to get their engineer to come back and uninstall Infinity. I will also complain to Offcom, as this situation could easily have been avoided had the BT sales person told me that Infinity won't work wirelessly with Ubuntu.

Firstly your negotiating skills with BT are far better than mine....
"....Total account and was persuaded to take Infinity on the grounds that it's a superior service for the same price"
I was on BT Total BB and had to pay an extra £2 pm for Infinity and then an extra £4.75pm uplift of the calls package to give me the same anytime calls I had previously.... And had to re-start another 18month contract!!! Ohhh well.
Right onto the problem... Webby's suggestion of making sure your on a clear or least used wireless channel is good advice.
Here is the link to the free software http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
    Have a look at a demo,- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf2kZCfYTxI
To be honest I would move your HH3 from the Automatic setting to a fixed wireless channel as they seem to work better like that.
If your Operating System won't work with Inssider I would then just try a different channel starting at 1 and work up... seeing how things go.
Regarding setting your HH3 to wireless g, that is a very backward step as the most you'll get over that would be around 20Mbps depending on your distance from hub etc.
Couple of pics comparing my speed test over wireless g and n in THIS POST.
Another thing I would try is a wireless n USB adapter... just in case your m/c is only g
Links of how to identify what yours is and pictures of the difference in the "Network Sharing Centre".. 54Mbps being g and anything above is wireless n....
Wireless n gives the best speed assuming your Infinity download IP is more than 20Mbps. Also wireless n signal is more robust penetrating walls etc.
There are links to the type of wireless n adapters I use... Picture of one HERE, (Don't need the extender cable shown in that picture).
    wwwebber's post was very useful.-
"I use Ubuntu on my laptop with BT Infinity & HH3 with no problems at all. BT is not at fault here - they do not support Ubuntu."
Confirming Infinity and Unbunto do work...
You say ".....but my netbook won't allow me to apply the changed settings, or to change the router settings .... but that only worked temporarily for me......"
As changing settings worked temporarily you must have been able to log into your HH3.
If you really can't log in can you borrow a friends netbook running windows to get logged in perhaps?
Log in,- http://bthomehub.home/html/home/home.html go to Advanced settings, wireless. and change Channel settings from Automatic to a channel number then click on Apply.
I would place your laptop near to the HH3 and move the HH3 wireless channel to a clear channel or start at channel 1.
Try to get a good wireless n speed..... example of mine 37Mbps  over http://www.speedtest.net/
Then when you have a reasonable speed move your laptop away... you will notice a drop over distance that's normal.
I am 20' away from my HH3 and get 37Mbps through a plasterboard wall.
Regarding other routers people have used http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/List-of-Routers-to-replace-Home-Hub-3/td-p/298203
And see Ady's msg #21 and #25 in THIS THREAD.
"'ll try the netbook in different locations over the w/e and hope from a solution from Ubuntu before remonstrating further with BT".
Please let us know how you get on.

  • HT1604 i erased my hfs+ with ubuntu, how can I format it back to hfs+ please help

i erased my hfs+ with ubuntu, how can I format it back to hfs+ because ubuntu rejects the cd or usb formatted to mac os extended journaled and i am in a stalemate position. What can i do?

You're running Ubuntu, and that operating system generally doesn't utilize HFS+.
That you're then asking this question implies you were intending to not do that, or that you were intending to run multiple operating systems within one GPT-partitioned disk.
I'm going to guess you wanted multiple operating systems.
If you had intended to partition your disk and to use various file systems within the partitioning, then the command(s) that were used to partition or repartition your disk were not what was probably intended.  (And this presumes that the two systems share compatible boot paths; that's possible with a system that can coexist within Apple's Boot Camp or Ubuntu or another operating system booted as a guest within one of the add-on OS X virtual machine products.  I don't know for certain that Ubuntu can coexist.)
To get OS X back onto this same volume, you'll need to figure out if you have a GPT and then what's in your GPT, and whether there's a partition large enough for OS X to exist, or whether you can repartition your GPT disk to allow OS X to be reinstalled or reloaded into the partition.  Or you'll need to wipe the whole disk, and replace its contents with a freshly-partitioned disk, and then load a copy of OS X that's been recovered from backup or freshly installed from distribution.  Or you'll need to provide another disk, and then partition and load an operating system (either Ubuntu or OS X) onto that as appropriate.
The tools for doing the repartitioning within Ubuntu are best discussed with folks more familiar with that operating system; I'm not sufficiently conversant to suggest tools for that.  I'd suggest a forum specific to Ubuntu for that.  The tools used to repartition the disks on OS X generally involve the Disk Utility tool, whether booted from DVD (Snow Leopard), from the USB key disk (Lion), from an external OS X disk, or potentially using Target Disk Mode from another OS X system.  And the OS X tools for repartitioning are destructive; they generally don't save what's in the existing partitions, if you need to make an existing partition smaller.
The usual sequence (and the one that's easiest to describe) to establish the environment starts by wiping the whole disk, and establishing GPT partitions of the appropirate sizes using Disk Utility or its Ubuntu GPT-aware analog, and then loading the target operating systems into each.  Alternatively, you can read the Boot Campe documentation, or review the documentation with the particular virtual machine product that you're going to choose and use on OS X for details of how to manage its guest operating systems.
Without some idea of your end-goal here (and where you're stuck in the current environment), it's hard to provide more specific suggestions.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • X1 and USB Port Replicator with digital video - hangs system

    Hi
with the X1 to help with docking it everyday at the office I have a USB Port replicator with digital video. I am not using the digital video but the USB ports, head phone and mics plus ethernet.
When I plug it in it detects it OK, I then installed the software. But after reboot it looks to stall when logging into windows, screen flickers back and forth and locks up the operating system. I unlplug it and reboot and window is working fine.
Note as I mentioned I am not using the digital output but instead using an external monitor via the display port on the back of the laptop.
Also its is very slow to boot (Lenovo bios splash screen is there for about a minute)
I have gone into the bios and turned off all other bootable devices just leaving the laptops hard drive.
As a work around I have removed the software and I am getting the basic functionality of the port replicator, but not the ethernet.
I have run the update manager but does not appear to show a need to update the drivers.
    Model X1 (1293-CTO)
    Windows 7

Hi, I have this same exact problem.
Video (anything from youtube to downloaded shows, movies) will freeze for 5-7 seconds at a time. The sound continues to play while the video is 'frozen', and the video resumes after that.
It will happen on its own, with no bumping, but it is more prone to happen if I do something like increase the volume within the media player.
    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

  • [SOLVED] Using a NETGEAR WN111v2 USB network adapter with Arch Linux

    Hello!
I just recently bought the adapter mentioned in the subject, and hoped to get it working with my lovely Arch Linux OS. (I had read somewhere online that it should work some way or another; ndiswrapper or a kernel driver). However, I've yet to get it working. I tried the tips I found:
    Here:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … ht=WN111v2
    which links to here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=885520
Basically, it tells me that I should use ndiswrapper with the arusb_xp drivers provided by NETGEAR. So I place the three files arusb_xp.inf, arusb_xp.sys and arusb_xp.cab in a folder, and run:
    sudo ndiswrapper -i arusb_xp.inf
    ndiswrapper -l
    arusb_xp : driver installed
    device (0846:9001) present
    sudo ndiswrapper -m
    sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
This should install my drivers, add an alias in modprobe.d/ndiswrapper saying "alias wlan0 ndiswrapper" and load ndiswrapper in itself... right?
But after a iwconfig I can still see only eth0 and lo, no wireless interfaces at all. I checked lsmod, but couldn't find any conflicting drivers loaded.
Anybody got an idea why it worked for the people with Ubuntu and not me? Any and all help greatly appreciated!
    Cheers
EDIT: For some magical reason, the drivers that came with my adapter did NOT work, while the drivers on the second link, named the same, DID. I have not inspected how they differ, but luckily, they work. Yey!

  • Focusrite Saffire 6 USB (1.1) with Macbook Pro late 2008

    Equipment-
         Macbook Pro Late 2008 w/ Yosemite 10.10.2
         Focusrite Saffire 6 USB (1.1)
The Saffire 6 is a audio interface using USB 1.1 to connect microphones to my Macbook. It has 2 inputs and 4 outputs. I've had this unit for years and has worked fine. I realized today that I haven't used it since upgrading to 10.10 (Yosemite) and wasn't able to get it working. When I try to set it within Sound Preferences, all devices, In and Out, go blank, then come back constantly. It will even change Built-In Mic to "Unknown".
The Saffire website (http://global.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb/downloads) lists two different driver choices to use, but one is labeled specifically for 10.8.5. The other just says "Mac". I'm certain my device is USB 1.1. If it were 2.0, I wouldn't need a driver. According to the website, I should use the 2.9 version.
How can I check to see if all previous driver installations are clear?
Is there anything I can check to make this thing work? The Focusrite website (http://us.focusrite.com/answerbase/are-focusrite-products-compatible-with-osx-yo semite) says that the Saffire 6 USB is compatible with Yosemite.
I've emailed Focusrite and I'm hoping between them and this forum, I can get this working again.
    Thanks!!

I've spoken to Focusrite. They had me try a number of things. I tried some of my own things.
    Different USB cable
    Deleted VodBurner device
    Repaired Permissions
    Installed/Uninstalled 3ivx codec
    Reset PRAM
    Performed Safeboot
    Removed Startup items
Growl, Sizeup, Crossover CD Helper, Dropbox
         Disable MagicPrefs from Autostart
Still not able to get it to work. The device will work on an XP computer but I don't have another Mac to try it out on. Any suggestions?

Is there a patch/fix for this issue with 10.8.3?
If not...why is Apple (seemingly) ignoring this issue? There are so many with the same complaint.
They want $19 to answer this question...why? I just bought the upgrade to 10.8.3 a couple of days ago.

  • Can I use a USB thumb drive with iPad

Can I use a USB thumb drive with iPad2

What do you want to do with the thumb drive?
If for picture/movie files, You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

A USB thumb drive with data created in Windows is not showing up on my desktop. Do I need a different driver or something?

OK in order to read those files you will need MS Office for Mac or install MS Windows on your Mac. You can get MS Office for Mac from anyone that sells Apple products. I would suggest the Apple Store, Best Buy, Amazon etc...For help getting the data from the memory stick I'd recommend visiting your local Apple Store or AASP and they can help you move it. It should be as simple as plugging the USB drive into your USB port and then open a Finder Window where you will see the drive on the left  pane. If you don't know what Finder is or how to open a new Finder window you need the sites I've noted below!!!
Because you are new to OS X I would strongly recommend you bookmark and frequently visit the following web sites:
