Is it at all possible to make dynamic themes in FCE as in the new iMovie '09? Thanks!

No pre-made themes, but you can create your own similar ones by animating the images in front of a background of your choice

Achieving a Camera Flash effect in FCE HD?

Hello.
I am trying to achieve a camera flash effect in FCE HD, but I don't think there is any effect that will do this. Does anybody have any ideas of how I can go about creating my own?
Basically I have a scene where there is a group of people in the film, and I want to add sounds like a camera shutter going off, and add a corresponding number of flashes to illuminate the group for a few seconds.
Any ideas? I am sure there was an effect like this for iMovie, but I can't find any reference to that either...

I'd like to add to what Tom wrote...I find that two frames is just about right to produce the flash effect.
As for the sound, start looking on the many sound effects websites out there. I'm sure you will find it and can download it for a reasonable fee. Or you can make it yourself by recording your own camera's shutter.

Easier Colour Isolation/Pleasantville Effect in FCE 4.0?

You can reproduce the pleasantville effect in FCE with this workflow:
1-duplicate your clip on V2
2-apply a chroma keyer on clip V2, select the color you want to keep in final composite. Pay attention to check the "invert" box in chroma keyer filter setting.
3- add a color corrector to V1 and set the saturation to 0.
You can color correct the V2 to saturate the apparent color or change it, but be sure to add any CC filter below the chroma keyer in filter stack.

'Ken Burns Effect' in FCE?

I'm working with still images in FCE, and need not only to zoom in or out (Ken Burns Effect), but also need to pan around (up & down) (left & right) within the photo. I suspect that what I really need to do to achieve this, is to shoot the photo with a cam-corder, and achieve my goals while shooting. But... is there possibly a way in FCE to do this type of movement on a still image in the editing stage?

Shane Ross tutorial is about FCP that provided advanced keyframing before FCE. Now if you have FCE 3.5, that tutorial fully applies to FCE as well; it doesn't to FCE 3.0.
FCE 3.5 was released in spring 2006, so the Apple Manual you are talking about must be about FCP, I guess...
About replies, they are clearly visible to everyboby, just their nesting depends on who you reply to.

Importing Trial version of boris effects to fce

I went to the apple page where you can find all the after market fonts and effects. I just downloaded a trial version, but how do you import them into FCE?

Fonts go into the system Fonts. Plugins go into hard drive/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Express Support/Plugins. That's assuming they don't have custom installer, which many do.

Ho to create an inverse dynamic effects in shapes in apple motion.

if i paint a stroke in motion as basic airbrush in shape style, i go in inspector , in shape -advanced and activate, dynamic, i want to create an invers particle effects, i want it to start as random particles and finisc in my fixed shape. ho can i do it?

You can use a Scrub filter to reverse a section of your timeline - see:

Why do I get an "X" when I apply an effect filter FCE?

When I apply an effect filter in FCE an big X appears on my clip. Is it something I am doing wrong or failed to do. I purchased my FCE direct from Apple about a year ago. I was under the impression that effects came with it, if I am mistaken please correct my thinking and provide me some guidance on what to do, if anything can be done at all. I may just be ignorant to this and I apologize for that.

Photo fuzzy after adding effect on FCE 4

Hi, i'm currently using final cut express 4 and am having some photo technical difficulties? Im using an Apple Intermediate Codec format for the current project with an HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30 with a rate of (all rates). Now when I place a photo on timeline it's fine, no need to render. It looks crisp and fine. Here are the image properties:
But when I add a video effect to the photo such as Gradient colorize and then I render the photo, the photo suddenly looses it's clarity, it becomes a bit fuzzy.
Can anyone help me out so that when i add an effect and render, it still retains it's clarity?

You could try Photoshop (Elements or CS), Pixelmator or another image editing app to resize the photo. I don't hold out a lot of hope for any significant increase in quality this way, because you will be enlarging a low res original.
Another option would be to open the image in Safari or other browser (see the More Info > Where from address) and then use Grab to capture the image on screen (instead of downloading the jpg file).
Note that Grab saves images as TIFF files. You will need to convert the TIFF to jpg to use it in FCE. The easiest way to do this is open the saved TIFF image in Preview, then do a Save As jpg. You may get some better resolution this way. But again, it's not a high quality image in the first place!

Cloning Effects in FCE: How to do a zig zag crop & blur the boundary ?

I am trying to learn to do clones of boy in FCE. I managed to do it in Sony Vegas Pro & looking forward to learn to do it in FCE.
I am trying to to make 8 clones of my boy to fit in the video. I use 8 tracks of video (one for each clones), just like I did in Sony Vegas Pro.
The problem I am facing is the cropping tools in FCE is just a straight horizontal or straight vertical line to reveal the video underneath the track.
But because of the 8 clones & it is cramped, in some places, I need to crop a diagonal or curve lines. In Sony Vegas I did the curve line by clicking many straight but shorter lines. But how to do that in FCE ?
Another problem I am facing is the at the boundary of the overlapping videos, I can see an obvious straight line. In Sony Vegas, there is a function to blur the lines at the boundary. How do I do that in FCE ?

After effects in FCE

Hey guys,
couple of questions..
firstly, can anyone recommend a great pug-in after effects package for Final Cut Express 4.
Also & more importantly, watching the new star trek movie & the effects used on the lights, the way they appear almost like lasers ( I know it sounds crazy) but i think it looks great & really wanna mess around with it.

Hi Killian and welcome to the forum!
I'm guessing a lot of what you're seeing is a combination between an onstage lighting set up and some careful compositing work afterwards.
Advanced compositing programs such as After Effects and Motion give you more control over artificial lighting of scenes, as well as creating and compositing cool effects such as laser beams and light sabers.

Can I create this particular effect in FCE HD?

Hi All,
I am trying to create a certain effect in Final Cut Express HD and I have no idea how to do it or if it is possible.
I need to highlight a certain part of a clip. Say for example you are looking at a crowd of people on a screen and a particular person is singled out and highlighted with a cirle - in effect dimming the rest of the scene...this is the effect I want to create.
If this is not possible, is there a way that I can use graphics to have an arrow pointing to that person in the scene...?

It is reasonably easy to achieve. Basically it is like blurring out a face but in your case lightening it.
In this link you will find a tutorial called "Cops" which you can watch as it is explained. All you have to do is use the brightness control instead of the Gaussian Blur.

Is This The Best Way To Put iMovie Effects On An FCE Clip?

I have often suggested to other people that they should export clips from FCE to iMovie in order to make use of certain iMovie effects that FCE can't do.
As with most things there are several different ways of "transporting" the clips.
Bearing in mind that we want the quickest/lossless method possible, is this the best?
1. In the FCE Timeline double-click the clip.
2. Select File>Export>QuickTime Movie and click "Save".
3.Open a new iMovie Project, import the newly made QuickTime Movie clip and add the necessary effect.
4. Back in FCE, Import the QuickTime Movie from the iMovie Project.
Is this in fact the best way or do you know of a better/quicker one?

By "clip" I was actually meaning a few seconds of video I had chopped up on the timeline.
What caught me out initially was when I simply highlighted the 10 second "clip" and selected QuickTime Movie.
The estimated time for conversion was around 10 minutes! It was actually making a QT Movie of the complete Sequence, not just the selected "clip". I soon realised that the "clip" needed double-clicking to ensure that only the required 10 seconds were converted.

FCE sound effects

Am wondering is there any body how I can get sound effects on FCE? am used on Imovie 06 I can add sound effects such as people are clapping hands etc! help please!

To get the high quality versions you have to pay, but you can download the low quality demos free.
Now here's the interesting thing. The so called "low" quality demos are often good enough to use in your video ........ try it and see.
To download you control click on the mp3 Preview demo and from the menu that opens select "Download Linked File".

FCE 3.5.1 Mac Pro and Panasonic NV-GS200

FCE 3.5.1 HD hangs when I start up with my Panasonic NV-GS200 camcorder connect via firewire. I have tried firewire DV PAL, Firewire basic PAL etc with no effect. FCE will only load if I turn off the camcorder. iMovie '08 stops at the blue importing video screen if it recognises the camera and iChat AV 4.0.2 does not recognise the camera or freezes. My OS 10.5.2 is fairly vanilla with all the recommended updates from Apple. Quicktime is up to date as is Flip4Mac WMV. The only other firewire device connected is an external HDD but both powering down and disconnecting the device has no impact. I have used a couple of different firewire cables, used the front firewire port, the back port and the port on my 20" Apple Cinema Display. I have an early (2006) Mac Pro 2 x 2.66GHz dual-core Intel Xeon with 2 GB RAM and 3 x 500GB internal HDD and ATI Radeon X1900XT.
The camcorder works fine with iMovie '08 on my new MacBook Pro 2.6GHz (Nov 2007) and on an old 1.25GHz eMac running 10.4.11. I can capture video if I boot into MS Vista under Boot Camp on my Mac Pro using MovieMaker.
This is very frustrating. The camera and cable combination works well on every machine I have tested except my Mac Pro under 10.5.2. The camera had worked previously on the machine under Tiger but I haven't used FCE for the last 8-12 months. A google search indicates sporadic mention of similar issues but with no solutions. I would appreciate any help if someone has resolved this issue.

NO ANSWERS - Just a few thoughts.
It appears from what you say that there is either a problem with your Mac or more likely with some of the updates you have done recently, rather than the camera.
Over the last year certain QT updates have caused FCE problems, though I haven't heard of iMovie being similarly affected.
Could you install FCE on your MBP and try that ? If your MBP has identical updates it will probably show the same problem, but if it did work it might give a few more clues.
Also would it be possible to try another camera just to rule out that it is not your Panasonic that is at fault?
If anyone else has any positive ideas please chime in !

Ken Burns, De-Interlacing, FCE, iMovie and Adobe Premiere

I've read countless articles, bought lynda training with Larry Jordan, pre-edited photos in Photoshop, done all kinds of experiments with filters and tried other movie editor packages. FCE with the Ken Burns effect is just very tricky and time consuming to make it look good.
I took a single photo that I cannot get to look good using the ken burns effect in FCE and tried it in iMovie '09 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. With iMovie, it simple to do this effect. In Premiere I used the same keyframe principles I learned in FCE.
I exported each of these to a Quicktime movie (self contained and I did not use Quicktime Converter) and then popped them into iDVD, burned a DVD and took it to the TV to compare. iMovie looked great. Premiere CS5 looked even better. FCE looks terrible. I tried every filter with various settings and nothing comes close to the other two.
I get that the photo doesn't have the greatest resolution, it's a jpg and has artifacts but the other two applications had no issue with it and produced great looking video. Is it me or is it FCE? BTW, using version 4.0.1.

Select your sequence (timeline).
Go to sequence settings (command-zero or choose Sequence > Settings...)
Find the Field Dominance menu, and set it to None.
You can check your video quality by setting the Canvas to 100%.
You should probably convert your images to .tiff or .png
instead of .jpg. Here's a thread that goes into some detail:
