Hello,
I have been asked to verify whether the following behavior
is a bug in IBM's Websphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD)
OR an expected JSP behavior. Can someone point to a whitepaper or some kind of official document which verifies that the below behavior is expected in WSAD 5.0???? I will truely appreciate the response. Thanks.
we dynamically including a jsp page like this --> [<jsp:include
page="test.jsp" />]. The included JSP page (test.jsp) has an intended compile time error. For example, we (on purpose) left the import of java.util.* out & tried to reference a Vector object. When I try to run the page that includes test.jsp (I called it Parent.jsp), I get the following runtime error:

Thanks for the info. However, I think I worded the problem
totally wrong! Here is my question in nutshell. Lets say that
I have imported the java.util.* package in the parent.jsp file.
I have included the test.jsp in the parent.jsp file DYNAMICALLY.
In test.jsp, the reference to the Vector object is failing. I believe
that should work, since the include directive basically appends the
test.jsp with the parent.jsp & hence exposes the imported java.util.*
package to the test.jsp. Which means the Vector reference should resolve & not fail at compile time. Do you agree? Maybe I am misunderstanding the include directive. Please let me know.
I am going to try to run it in WebLogic tonight. A sort of a controlled
experiment. At this point, Its not working in WSAD. Thanks.

I'm just trying to migrate from another webserver to SunOne.
I have a number of pages that rely on dynamic JSP includes.
IE
<jsp:include page="<%= someString %>" flush="true">
All pages which use this fail to compile and I get a server error (no errors show up in the logs).
While using a static value (the same value) works fine.
<jsp:include page="somevalue" flush="true">
Has anyone has this problem ? has this functionality been discontinued ?

Hi,
That page refers to the JSP Spec. version 1.1 which is used in WebServer 6.0.
It is documented in the Release Notes for WebServer 6.0 that jsp:include throws an exception when used with the POST method. Is this what you are experiencing?

Which version of webserver are you using?? Your subject line refers to "Websever 5 sp 5" but do you mean Webserver 6.0sp5 or WebServer 6.1sp5??
WebServer 6.1sp5 uses JSP Spec. version 1.2, so the page that you were referring to is not relevant if you are using this version of WebServer.
Please note that JSP Specs can be downloaded from:

Let us know exactly which version of WebServer you are using :)

Dynamic Jsp Include

I want to dynamically include a file in jsp.
%@ include file= [variable name] %>
Is this possible?

If you want request-time inclusion (and it seems that is what you want), use <jsp:include>
For example, one could conditionally include the content generated from two different JSPs like this...

Dynamic JSP's includes from JSF Java Beans

I�m David from Barcelona.I'm testing different JSF components.
I'm working with MyFaces components, with Tabs, binding the component like this to create sub tabs dynamically:

Now, in the bean, I use the Application class to create
my pane and child tabs:

I want to start adding contents to my child tabs.
Am I locked into doing it programmatically or is it possible to somehow refer back to a JSP page
with an include to generate the contents of each tab child?
I can do it without binding the panelTabbedPane component, but the problem it's when I construct the component with a binding, then the include JSP doesn't work. I have tried with a Verbatim and HtmlOutputText but no results, like this:

Oh dear, Java 101 mistake. You want to use result.equals("success") to make that work.
Another observation: you may want to move all the database code to a separate class. If you put database logic in seperate classes with specific methods (login(), logout(), getAllUsers(), etc.) you not only make your code more readable but you make it possible to re-use those methods in different parts of your code.

Catch Exception for dynamic Include jsp:include

I have a page (says pageA.jsp) that should include other file dynamically. (<jsp:include page="<%=includedFile%>" flush="true"/>)
However, if there is error in the included file, can pageA.jsp redirect to the error page stated in the page attribute instead of including the error message in pageA.jsp?

So here is a solution, not an optimal one I think but it should be ok if URL are all absolute. Note a "/" is add to be sure when including.

Including Dynamic JSP in a JSP

I am including a JSP inside another JSP using <jsp:include page ="-" />
THIS is giving some error,i.e can't compile.If i am running the JSPs with out including the JSPs are working fine.
Could any one tell the problem.

Writing JSP dynamically & using JSP includes

Need help with this one --
I am pulling data from various fields of the DB and then placing the data into session vars so that based on what a user selects, the right information is displayed.
My problem is this - I want to be able to display a jsp include file based on what the user selects. So the flow would go something like this
EXAMPLE
// USER selects a fruit (from a drop-down form) --> apple
"apple" is stored in session var named fruit.
// USER SUBMITS and expects to see a page based on his <%=fruit %> selection.
//show_page.jsp
I want to use the include tag that will call the right page based on the user selection -- like this:
<%@ include file="<%= fruit%>.jsp" %>
And in my thinking this would return - <%@ include file="apple.jsp" %> and thus include the right file for the user.
Anyone know if embeding JSP to include a session var is possible?

I know my synax is wrong. It's like I'm trying to embed a JSP tag inside inside a JSP include tag.

What is the difference between jsp :include and server side include

what is the difference between jsp :include and server side include(request dispatcher include method)????
i understand that both request dispatcher include method and jsp:include take dynamic data,so when would one use request dispatcher include and when jsp:include.
Is the usage interchangeable?i believe jsp include is used only for jsp/html but include directive can be used to include servlets ,jsp and html....correct me if i m wrong and

The difference really is: in what format do you want your inclusions? If your environment has many Java developers and only a few designers that focus mainly on, say, Flash, that might push you more towards the server-side include() directive. Or, if you have a large set of pages that receive dynamic content that is displayed in a consistent fashion (such as a workflow header area on a page).
If, on the other hand, you have more web designers, there may be a greater desire to deal in markup rather than Java code. Java developers themselves might prefer to view markup (JSP) that more resembles the eventual output than something occuring in Java code.
Finally, there are considerations of tiering. While it is totally possible to (and I have previously) implement 'view classes' that render markup or generate layout templates, JSP's offer, IMO, a subtle, psychological advantage. By forcing a developer to work in a different format, markup versus Java source, the separation on view from controller and model becomes a bit easier. It is still possible to make mistakes, but if a developer at some point notices, "Wait, I'm in a JSP, should I be importing a java.sql class?", then the choice to use JSP includes has paid off in spades.

Jsp:include static svg does not work

I am running tomcat4- and I have a jsp file that outputs svg content like so:

<%@ page contentType="image/svg+xml"%>
This works fine- the problem is that up until now I have included other svg widgets like this:
<g id="radio_off" >
               <%@ include file="../graphics/radioButton.svg" %>
          </g>
which also works just fine. Now, I have to change this to pass in a dynamic directory containing the image (there will be various directories with same file name- I determine at runtime which directory to use)- so I have to use a jsp:include instead.
When I do this:
<g id="radio_off" >
<jsp:include page="graphics/radioButton.svg" flush="true"/>
          </g>
When it is run I just get:
g id="radio_off" >
          </g>
Just blank inside the <g> . If I change radioButton.svg to radioButton.jsp and say:
g id="radio_off" >
<jsp:include page="graphics/radioButton.jsp" flush="true"/>
          </g>
Then I get what I expect with
g id="radio_off" >
<svg width="15" height="15">
....and so on
          </g>
I thought jsp:include would include the static content of a file (like html or svg), but apparently only the OUTPUT of that file.....
Is this correct- I cannot get my svg content to be included in the svg by using jsp:include or am I missing something?
I think it will be strange that I have to rename all my svg files jsp to get them included...Anu ideas???

You are right- I reread your post more closely and saw that you are suggesting to basically just map all my static files (like the .svg) into .jsp extensions- which is basically what I was asking was true- that for svg, xml, htm, any static content to be included as in the <%@include directive but using the action <jsp:include it needs to either be changed to the extension .jsp or, as you suggested, mapped in the web.xml to .jsp. I have remapped my svg to .jsp so as to preserve their .svg extensions- (of course now the first user is hit by about 20 jsp:init's on that page!!- but is then cached as in all jsp's).
I guess kinda makes since since the include action gets the actual response from the page (which is blank image)- but as jsp it is the actual code....Well needed confirmation- and that's what I got along with the reminder to use the mapping in web.xml.

Jsp:include does not work in 8.1 SP3?

Hi all,
          I need to include a local file (external to the app) in jsp code. The external file includes an image map which changes very so often. So in order to avoid doing a build everytime, I thought about keeping the image map in a file which can be "included" in the jsp file, making it very dynamic to a change.
          So I have a servlet which will read this file and output the contents to response.getWriter(), which will be included in calling jsp code.
          But the jsp file does not seem to call the servlet at all.
          Here is the code in the jsp file:

          What am I doing wrong? Is this not possible at all?

          I think it might be syntax error in your jsp page.
          This is the syntax to including dynamic files in jsp using <jsp:include page="" />tag as given below.

JSP include problem

I am facing problems with the JSP include functionality in my project.
What I want to do is to include jsp files on the fly i.e depending on the business need I should be able to swap in and out jsps from the main jsp.
I plan to do this by feeding the file names in a request attribute and then including the files in the order given.
But on using the jsp:include there is no output generated by the included jsp.
There is no error either in the log or in the page directly.
Please help me in finding out what exactly is the issue here.

I am not sure that could be the real problem , but I guess your app server does not like the fact that you broke the try catch in two parts. In any case, you should not do that :) Mixing code and display is very painful for maintenance :)
Have you tried to remove the jsp:include and see if the output is correctly produced?

JSP:Include directive - can I access data?

Hi,
I am using the 'include' directive (either jsp:include method or <%@ include.... /> ) to include another jsp page.
I want the included file to access variables that have been set up in the main page (the one with the include directive in it). I've tried several things, including setting up a Bean class, but nothing seems to work
Is this possible? I really appreciate any help with this.

You cannot use <%@ include ..%> because that is resolved at translation time. <jsp:include /> is resolved dynamically and should give you what you need. In the main page, store references to the bean or other data as request attributes and then retrieve them in the included page.

Using jsp:include in showOneTab - main form not loaded on submit

I have a JSP page with JSF and ADF components. It is a large JSP containing some main details and then an af:showOneTab component to create a set of tabs. It works fine with JDK 1.5 and Tomcat 5.0 but when changed to Oracle Application Server 9.0.4 and JDK 1.3 We get the following error:
JspCompileException:.... code too large for try statement catch( Throwable e}....
Finding this to be caused by large size of JSP, we divided the page as follows - a main jsp containing the main form details and 1 jsp for each tab. Whenever one of the tabs is clicked the corresponding JSP is dynamically loaded using jsp:include tag as follows:

               <jsp:include page="Tab1.jsp" />
          </f:subview>

There is a Submit button in the main jsp, when this is clicked the main jsp is reloaded.
But when the user navigates to any of the tabs and then clicks the Submit button in the main form, the main form is not reloaded - only the jsp for the currently selected tab is loaded.
(I am using f:view and h:form in the main form, and no form tag in the included jsps)
How to solve this problem?

The af:selectOneChoice components are in the test.jsp page included in main.jsp with jsp:include tag.
The code look like this:

Valiable file name in JSP include

Hi,
I am trying to include a html file in a JSP page. The filename comes from the properties file and hence is a variable. The JSP file that has this include does not cache the JSP page plus it "refreshes" (reloads) ever 30 seconds.
When I include the HTML file using jsp:include I am not getting the HTML file on alternate browser refreshes. Wierd?
I then hard coded the filename and included the html file using <% @ include... and it works just fine.
But I cannot have a variable name in <%@ include.
Please comment on this wierd behaviour of jsp:include and gimme a solution.

Sorry this isn't a solution, because I have the very same problem and was just getting ready to post a question when I saw your post. I have also tried using:
<jsp:include page="<%= myFilename %>" flush="true" />
as well as
<%@ include file="<%= myFilename %>" %>
Neither of these work. This kind of approach seems to work just fine using <jsp:forward....>, but there's something funny about trying to include a file dynamically.
I would also appreciate a solution. Good luck.

Jsp:include problem in custom tag

I call <jsp:include page="emailbody.jsp" /> within a custom tag(in a file
          caller.jsp), which does emailing.
          When I invoke caller.jsp from browser, I do get the output(body of the
          email) on the browser screen, but not the output is not send as the body of
          the email.
          When I use static include namely, <@include file="emailbody.jsp" />, the
          output is directed to the body of the email.
          The above means, for a static jsp include file, it is parsed and included in
          the body-evaluation of the custom tag.
          For a dynamic include file, it is NOT parsed and NOT included in the
          body-evaluation of the custome tag.
          The reason could be, How Weblogic loads classes for custom-tag for dynamic
          include files.
          Can anybody at BEA throw loght on this and the solution.

Well I found out jsp:include is not supported inside custom tags for JSP
          spec 1.1.
          This was stated in section 5.4.5 of spec 1.1.
          May be in future spec 1.2.
