Dynamic Link with PP/After Effects CS5 question

So, first time using After Effects ever. Absolutely loving it, can't wait to really learn this program.
Anyways, my situation.
I have a 15 second commercial I'm editing with Premiere Pro CS5 on my MacBook Pro. The second to last shot, I initially right clicked the clip in the timeline and selected "Replace With After Effects Composition." I did some motion graphics on this shot, and I'm pretty sure when I was done, I rendered the timeline in PP which synced back into PP what I did in AE. I believe at that time I closed AE completely without saving the composition.
Now I still have this shot in my PP timeline and it still has the AE effects I added, but I do not believe there is any saved AE file that references that composition. Whenever I click "Replace With After Effects" it just opens a new linked composition, but instead of any footage and animation, there is just a big color bar screen.
Is there any way to still edit this composition in AE? What is the proper way to save files linked between PP/AE so you can completely close both programs and open them later and still edit the composition?

See, that's what I would think to, but I'm almost sure I did not save the linked comp in AE.
Not on my computer now, but I could check on lunch.
I guess I could just create a dummy project in PP, open a linked comp thru Dynamic Link, do a few changes in AE, render/sync to PP, and then close AE w/o saving and see what happens?
Are there any good walkthroughs you guys are aware of? I'm reading how pre-CS5, Dynamic Link was really only a "one-way" street, but that has changed in CS5.

  • How can I connect to dynamic link in Adobe After Effects CC ???

    Please help !

    To create a dynamic link AE project you start in Premiere Pro. There are lots of tutorials including this one from Adobe TV which comes up if you search Dynamic Link in the After Effects Search Help field at the top right corner of the app. The search help field in AE is the most under used feature of the program for new users. I've been at it for 20 years and I use this feature all the time to find new things and things I've forgotten.

  • How to make a Dynamic Link starting in After Effects to Premier (not other way around)

    I have seen a ton of tutorials how to Dynamic Link from Premier to After Effects. (but not the other way around. )
    I need instructions/video how to link starting in After Effect to Premier.
    For example if I make a title in After Effects and then want to dynamic Link it into Premier how is this done?
    Thanks!!

    I've looked at this too. When I first started using DL, I thought that it was basically a two way street between applications. But that analogy doesn't work very well. DL is PPro-centric. Like PPro is the hub, DL the spokes, and the other Abobe applications are on the rim. And this makes a fair amount of sense. The central feature of an editing suite is the editor, and that would be PPro.
    Another way to look at it is that you can push from PPro to AE, and PPro can pull from AE, but AE can not push to PPro. So the direct answer to "I need instructions/video how to link starting in After Effect to Premier"  is, you can't. What you can do is make your title composition in AE, import that AE project into PPro, and use the composition as you would any other asset in PPro. Then when you change your title in AE, you'll see the change in PPro almost immediately without you having to do anything.
    When I'm making motion lower thirds, for example, I now make them in AE. I let the AE project reside in the directory with the PPro project that I made the lower thirds for. Then when I want the lower thirds in PPro, I just import the AE lower thirds into the PPro project. There's a few ways to do this. One is to use the Media Browser. The MB will open up the AE project for you and let you select which composition you want to import. Another way is to File...Adobe Dynamic Link...Import AE composition which does more or less the same thing. There may be other ways as well, IDK.

  • How compatible is Motion 5 with Adobe After Effects CS5.5?

    If I create a project in Motion 5, am I able to export this project so that it is natively importable into Adobe After Effects CS5.5? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    The two will not read each other's project files.  You could try an XML export, and import that into AE.  Audomatic Duck makes translators for this type of stuff.

  • Dynamic Link Premiere and After Effects CS4

    I am new to owning the whole suite, so I did not realize that you could use dynamic link. I figured out that I could import premire projects into AE (without linking) I just imported them and assumed I would create my effects and render out the project only to import the rendered video into Premiere. Now, I realize I could have just right clicked on a clip in Premiere and used link.
    Now, my question is can I get those effects prjects from After Effects into premire? If so, then how? i have tried dymanic link and I just get a linked sequence in premeire . . .
    Am I blind or stupid or both?? Please help!

    You can export a Premiere Pro project from After Effects, but the results are usually pretty messy. Because of the different way in which tracks in Premiere and layers in After Effects work (ie. you can have multiple clips on a single track in PPro, but only one clip/item per layer in AE), you can end up with an unmanageable number of tracks in Premiere. Still, it's an option to explore.
    Note that AE-only effects won't come through to Premiere, and certain project items will be recreated in a way you might not expect.

  • Dynamic Link Replacing w/ After Effects

    I'm on a PC Windows7 Home Premium 2.88 AMD w/ 14GB Ram--- Production Premium CS5-
    I have two cameras I am  editing a wedding.
    Camera 1's footage containing about 6 seperate files is on one path of the time line (path 1)
    Camera 2's footage is on the second.
    I trim the clips to have the entire ceremony go from camera to camera to create the best scenes for the ceremony.
    Since SA's Color Finesse has better features to color grade, what I did was right click the cut clips and clicked 'replace w/ after effects composition.' The first one asked me to save a file which I did. I then went down to the different cut clips (some of them on the same source file, some not and I sent them to AE in the same fashion to grade.  One time AE and PP crashed and when I reopened the project, the clips were red. I was able to manually relink the clips, but when I when I closed the programs and wanted to do this same process, I had to save another file which then made all the clips I had previously worked on red and missing.
    I know there must be a pattern or rule that must be followed or else it all goes to crap. What is the pattern???
    I also tried to color grade in AE and then I sent the AE file into PP it said that it did not have SA Color Finese 2.0 in PP  (which mine is suppossed to be 3.0 in AE), thus all my work that way is wasted unless I render.
    Thus, I want to be able to trim, arrange my clips in PP, then color grade w/ SA CF in AE. I don't like the color tools in PP.  Am I stuck w/ having to buy something to color grade in PP?

    Yea man,
    Here's the problem I had and would have if I continued doing this...
    Timeline1- 3 clips----Day 1- you place effects on clips 1 and 2 w/ 'Replace w/ AE comp'. W/ 1st clip it prompts you to save an AE PROJECT file that becomes the link...it creates the AE comp file and places it in the PP project bin. Clip 2...as long as the AE PROJECT file that is linked to the first file is open, I can create a dynamic link for the second file and it automatically creates the AE comp in PP....Here's where the problem happened...
    Day 2- so I come back the 2nd day (or whenever)... I had closed and saved the AE and PP project files that are linked together. When I open the PP project I'm working on, the dynamic links for clips 1 and 2 are in the bin...no problems. But, if  I go to clip 3 to replace that one w/ an AE comp., when AE loads, it prompts me to save an AE project file again...If I save ANOTHER PROJECT file, then all the AE comps linked to the previous PROJECT file get delinked. What actually seems to happen is that clip 3, since it is technically the first comp in this NEW AE PROJECT file, the effects applied to clip 3 and clip 1 become tied together. Ex...If I do adjustments to the AE comp that is linked for clip 3, say I just make it bright blue just to see the effect, not only does clip 3 turn blue, but clip 1 also turns blue....The solution to this is when I open PP and want to go to my next clip, in this case clip 3, I need to open the original AE PROJECT file that is linked to clips 1 and 2.  Then, if I do this, it automatically creates a new comp for clip 3 (it doesn't prompt me to save an AE PROJECT file) and there are no problems. That is the solution.
    Important notes--- When I create the AE comps and they get loaded in PP, I did not rename them something else. I just kept the generic name AE and PP created for the linked file.  I need to test what happens when I go and rename the created clip to see what happens.
    Also, I do not know what happens in different time lines. All the work I've done has been in 1 time line and 1 timeline only.  And, I have all the work on one path in the timeline, meaning I do not have clips stacked on one another.
    From now on, when I want to replace PP w/ AE comps, I will always open the original AE PROJECT file that is linked to that PP project and can easily access this file by right clicking an already replaced (linked) clip and choosing 'edit original.'
    So basically what you were duplicating with your tests failed to close and save PP and AE, then reopen PP, go to another unlinked clip and hit 'replace w/ AE comp." It should ask you to save another AE project...do that and you'll lose your other linked clips but 1 and the new one you are creating that first time. It does it on my system 100% of the time. I'm going too test it now BUT rename my comp links.
    I'm really not that worried unless it is a bug in my program because I can always just open the original AE Project when I want to replace the clips. Thus far, it has worked w/ dozens of unique clips using the same source files as well as different source files. I have not had one problem w/ broken links provided I do this. It scares the **** out of me though not knowing what could happen, but I'll be keeping a close eye out and saving my work on a regular basis as I progress.

  • Dynamic Link slow in After Effect CC 2014 (Version 13.0)

    So been waiting & hoping for an update from Adobe on the 2014 versions of AE & PP that fixes this massive slowdown of AE comps in PP and nothing has happened in 2 months!
    So can anyone at Adobe tell me why AE now runs so slowly in PP when the previous version ran AE comps quickly on my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048 MB . I'm keen to know especially as just spent £500 switching from an ATI Radeon card that does not support CUDA to Nvidia just to get the GPU acceleration with CUDA and a few weeks later the 2014 upgrade comes out and I loose all the new speed!

    I found this reference to a bug fix in AE 13.1
    "slow rendering of After Effects compositions used in Premiere Pro through Dynamic Link when the main After Effects application is open"
    I think I was getting slow rendering even with AE closed, but let's see...

  • Why does my Premiere CC 2014 crash every time I use "Adobe Dynamic Link" and have After Effects CC 2014 open in the background?

    Here are my MacBook Specs:
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    480 GB Solid State SATA Drive
    750 GB SATA Disk
    I use "Adobe Dynamic Link" mainly for typography and some animation, but not to the point where it would stress out Premiere CC 2014.

    Chris,
    It doesn't crash for everyone.  A person could be forgiven for saying, in return, "Please sort out your **** system problems".
    Trust me when I say many, many problems are caused by the computer system setup not being up to the needs of this cutting-edge graphics software.  Photoshop is heavily dependent on the GPU, and GPU drivers are notorious for having bugs (they're primarily written to run games).
    However, that being said, recent driver releases from both ATI and nVidia do actually work pretty well with Photoshop CC 2014.
    What video card do you have?
    What display driver version are you running?
    If you're unsure how to tell these things, go into Photoshop, choose Help - System Info, copy the data, and post it here.

  • Dynamic link premiere to after effects doesn't send clips to after effects timeline

  • Dynamic Link - Premiere to After Effects - Messing up the composition

    Hi guys,
    We are sending a simple sequence to After Effects from Premiere. Some of the footage has rate stretches on it. When we open this in AE, the sequence is almost unrecognisable. Some of the clips are in the right place, but quite a few aren't, including additional clips that are 0 frames long. We think the rate stretch is confusing it somehow, but we've not had a problem like this in the past. Any help would be appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Rob

    Sure, no problem, the details are:
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 Version 6.0.5
    Adobe After Effects CS6 Version 11.0.4.2
    Mac is OSX 10.9.2. CPU is 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7. 16GB ram 1600 MHz DDR3.
    Quicktime is installed and up to date. All footage is H.264 in a .mov container.
    No third-party effects, plugins or codecs have been used on the sequence.
    We've had this same problem when attempting to bring the sequence over via different methods: Sending to AE from Premiere, copying and pasting into AE from Premiere, importing Premiere sequence into AE. All three ways result in the same confused timeline sequence.
    Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • After Effects CS5 Configuration Error 3

    I'm really getting frustrated with Adobe After Effects CS5 right now. For the last month, I have been getting a message that says "Configuration Error 3, Please re-install the product". I uninstall it, then reinstall After Effects, and I still have the message. I even reconfigured my computer to try to fix the problem. It fixed it for about 2 hours then I got the message again. I tried uninstalling then used the Adobe Cleanup Tool, as recommended to me before. This did not work. I need to know how to fix this because now I have to use this for school.
    My computer specs:
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
    System Rating: 5.3
    Processor: AMD Phenom(TM) 9750 Quad-Core Processor 2.40 GHz.
    RAM: 8.0 GB
    Graphics Card: Nvidia GForce 9800 GT

    I wish I knew an easy answer to your problem. I haven't had to deal with Windows errors for several years now, but back in the day when I was working primarily on Windows machines I kept a system backup of the OS in a disk image using Norton Ghost. There are also probably other backup / restore options out there that work just as well.
    When I got into one of these "can't seem to solve it" scenarios, I simply restored the system OS using a good disk image from my latest clean install of just the OS and core programs. This took less than an hour and gave me a clean place to start, run the latest system updates, then install my critical apps. Once I had a clean install of my primary apps I ran another system backup using Ghost. Now you've got two clean places to bounce back to in case of a major system failure. Using the disk image you can be back up and running in about an hour no matter what happens.
    The key to making this work quickly is to keep all your work on something other than the Boot drive. If you don't have a separate backup of your work then the a restore from the disk image could take much longer. Either way, it's a much better solution than spending the better part of a couple of days reformatting the boot drive and re-installing the OS and all the programs from scratch.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5 Lagging Horribly with Dynamic Link

    I just bought a brand new computer. It is a beast
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel i7-980 6 cores with HT = 12 CPU cores
    Nvidia GTX 570HD 1280mb 328 bit
    120gb SSD sata 3
    600 gb Velociraptor drive 10000rpm
    8gb DDR3 1866MHZ ram
    So you would think I would get no lag. But for some reason, when I edit in premier pro or after effects, especially when I use dynamic link with premiere and after effects. It lags realllllly badly. I am talking about 5fps and I have to pause and wait like 20 secs then hit play again to get 5 secs of smoothness and then the laggyness returns. I am not even using heavy footage. It is footage off of a Canon 5D Mark II h.264. I tried messing around with all the settings but I cannot get anywhere. Anyone know what the problem might be? I don't have any other programs running since I just installed these. This lag is really holding me back and I cannot edit properly because of it.

    Your memory is ill configured, since you are using it in dual channel mode instead of triple channel mode and 8 MB is about bare minimum. You would be better off if you were to increase memory to 24 GB. Secondly, your disk configuration is the absolute minimum requirement, so adding a couple of disks will help performance as well.
    I am not even using heavy footage. It is footage off of a Canon 5D Mark II h.264
    Mistake. It is one of the most demanding codecs on the market. Look here: Adobe Forums: System requirements for CS5
    You could try the PPBM5 Benchmark to see how well your setup performs.

  • Dynamic Link with Encore, Photoshop, and After Effects

    Intention 1: Im using Photoshop CS5 (PS5) & After Effects CS5 (AE5) to create a DVD menu for Encore CS5 (EN5). I used the 'Film & Video' preset in PS5 to make a standard HD 1440 x 1080px image size; which looks the same in AE5. My problem is in PS5 the 'Pixel Aspect Ratio Correction'  size is the size i want the universal size to be. Its a more stretched version which looks better to me, but may not work well with HD monitors (as this DVD will be played on a 17" laptop).
    Question 1: Is there any way to have AE5 recognize the 'pixel aspect ratio correction' from PS5 and make the composition settings that size in AE5?
    ```
    Question 2: What are standard sizes for computer monitors that would work welll mostly with the Dynamic Link in AE5 and EN5 working with PS5?
    Yes, it can be very confusing. With CS5, however, as long as you keep it all the same, it doesn't require setting. But you do need to understand it.
  • Dynamic Link Audio Troubleshooting- Premier to After Effects CS5
    Hello!
      My name is Alley and I've been working on a project in After Effects CS5 using dynamic linked sequences from premier. I've been in this project for a good two weeks without any major problems concerning the dynamic link. When I open the project on another computer, however, sometimes there is audio missing from some of the sequences. I look in the premier project and sure enough the audio is all there, no keyframes or anything and it plays back fine. It just won't appear in After Effects even after a render. I know it probably has something to do with the different computers but I don't know if anyone else has ever had this problem before and if you found a solution.
    • Both computers are Mac OS X Versions 10.6.6 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Cores
    • After Effects and Premier are CS5 versions, completely updated
    • There are no errors or warnings popping up within the programs
    • All Dynamic Linked sequences are 2 minutes tops although there are a multiple of them
    • Not ALL the sequences have the audio problem, it seems to be random
    I can't wrap my brain around how two nearly identical computers with the same versions of both programs are getting different results with the audio in the dynamic link sequence... Help me out?
    Quicktime! The versions of Quicktime and or even just some QT component/CoDec may be different between the computers. Also keep in mind, that your alternate computer may in fact require you to explicitly open the project in Premiere to conform the audio properly first. If that hasn't happened, AE may simply not be able to use some tracks as it will expect a conformed audio file. This is critical especialyl with compressed formats. It may even require you to re-render the Premiere timeline on the second computer...
