Dynamic Menu layout!

Question

Hei
Need some help.
I have lefthand main menu, where I have MAIN-categories
showing like this until clicked. Eg:
SHOES
JEWELRY
CLOTHS
COMPUTERS
SOFTWARE
FURNITURE
ETC.
Now what I want to do is when I CLICK on each of the
MAIN-categories, I will be taken to their respective
SUB-categories just below the MAIN-category. But the layout
should be something like this:
SHOES
black shoes
green shoes
yellow shoes
blue shoes
etc
JEWELRY
CLOTHS
COMPUTERS
SOFTWARE
FURNITURE
ETC.
In other words when I click a MAIN-cagegory menu, it will
bring down a list of SUB-categories just under the MAIN-category
and the rest of the MAIN-categories will go automatically below the
SUB-categories but not be indented.
If possible I want to do this Dynamically with MySql
MAIN-category and SUB-category database tables.
How do I go about achieving this. I am in Dreamweaver CS3
with PHP and MySql.
Where to start and some gradual steps will be very helpful?
