Dynamic online disk array without (reboot -- -r) on Solaris 10.

I am seeking a way to online a new disk array after I have added the array into the fabric (FC switch) with Solaris OS 10 without reboot and reprobe HW command.
This used to work for Solaris OS 9 or lower using command "devfsadm" or "devfsadm -c disk" (class specific).
Leadville command "cfgadm -al" did not see the new path as I was hoping for with tag of "unconfigure" (so that I can configure it in).
Any suggestion on how can I online the disk array using certain OS (Solaris 10) command would be very much appriciated.
Please, let me know.
If it is possible. My email address is

thanks much
juan.

Folks,
Interesting info as I tried with SPARC base runing Solaris 10 OS. The daemon is auto imported the unit without I have to issue the OS scan device "devfsadm".

  • Bringing an internal drive back online without rebooting?

    I currently have (4) internal 1TB drives, (3) of which are backed up via Time Machine (NAS connected via iSCSI). I'm in the process of adding a large external Raid-5 array and plan to use it in place of the internal drive w/o backup. This frees up one internal drive. I was thinking of using this as a bootable backup, cloned from the main boot drive with SuperDuper. When the computer first boots up, this boot drive clone is available in case the main boot drive fails. Once running, I want to take the clone drive off line to maximize it's life, reduce the heat load, etc. Problem is, how do I bring the clone drive back online for nightly SuperDuper cloning without rebooting?

    NAS connected via iSCSI
    Umm, if it's iSCSI, it isn't NAS, but that's beside the point.
    how do I bring the clone drive back online for nightly SuperDuper cloning without rebooting
    via either Disk Utility.app, or the command line equivalent diskutil
    $ diskutil mount
    Disk Utility Tool
    Usage: diskutil mount \[readOnly\] MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
    diskutil mountDisk MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
    diskutil u[n]mount \[force\] MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
    diskutil u[n]mountDisk \[force\] MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
    diskutil eject MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
    Mount, unmount or eject local disks or volumes.
    Unmount also works on network volumes.
    MountDisk and unmountDisk will operate on all partitions of that disk.
    Example: diskutil unmount /Volumes/SomeDisk

  • Other way to see shared disks without rebooting OVS

    Dear,
    i'm running oracle vm server with 3 guest os'(para-virt)
    when create a shared disks and shares to 3 guest os' ; i need to reboot all guest os in order to see new shared disks using (fdisk -l);but not all of the guest os could see the shared disks until i reboot the OVS. is there any command to run to avoid a reboot of the OVS.
    Thanks in advance.
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
    Here a command for you to attach the sharable/none-sharable disks manually,
    Usage: xm block-attach <Domain> <BackDev> <FrontDev> <Mode> [BackDomain]
    It can be issued under Dom0 to attach your newly created sharable disk manually without a reboot.
    e.g.xm block-attach 9 file:/OVS/running_pool/52_pvm_el5u1_x86_64/sharabledisk_again.img xvdb w! 0
    Note that 9 is your DomU id,and 0 is Dom0 ID.
    The command would not take effect any more after reboot,so for the permanent use,please write that info into vm.cfg as well.
    Hope that helps for you,:)

  • Video FX: video effects and editing drive (incl. RAID disk arrays)

    Having had an issue with rendering iMovie effects and read through a few posted thread, I ran an experiment that pinpoints an incompatibility between iMovie and large size (800GB) RAID array volumes. Hence the following questions:
    Is iMovie designed to support large sire RAID disk arrays ?
    Could anybody test a non-RAID array large size (say 500GB or better 1000GB) volume to check if it is size or RAID dependent ?
    When can we expect a fix ?
    For more details, please read on.
    Reading through the other threads talking about the Quartz composer effects, it sounds like the Apple programmers have a lot of work ahead to deliver a more robust 6.0.2 version.
    I wanted to record the noticed incompatibility of working with a project outside the System & Application drive and applying Quartz composer effects.
    Most keen videographers are using either a good large size external drive, a RAID array or a separate partition to store their video footage and editing work. So the noticed incompatibility needs to be looked into.
    Interestingly, I read of other users having the same problem but Karl Petersen also mentionned that he didn't have the problem ...
    So, what's wrong ? If the problem would be consistent, it would be easy to have Apple on their toes to fix it, but if not ...
    So I ran a small experiment. I took the same iMovie project and copied it to my different disks and volumes (at least the ones where I had enough space) and tested 3 types of effects:
    -1- the non-Quartz Composer 'fast/slow/reverse' effect, which caused me trouble already in iMovie '05;
    -2- the Quartz Composer 'sepia tone' effect, which I was using without problem in the previous version;
    -3- the non-Quartz Composer 'aged film' effect, which I was using without problem in the previous version;
    My disk and volume configuration is the following:
    -> First internal 500GB Serial ATA Disk split into 3 partitions:
    a) 30GB System & Applications Drive (Start-up Disk);
    b) 20GB Pictures Drive;
    c) 415.6GB Partition as Slice 1 of my Apple RAID array;
    -> Second internal 500GB Serial ATA Disk split into 4 partitions:
    d) 15GB Virtual PC System & Applications Drive;
    e) 15GB MAC & PC Documents Drive;
    f) 20GB Musics Drive;
    g) 415.6GB Partition as Slice 2 of my Apple RAID array;
    -> Internal 831.3GB Apple RAID Array - striped RAID set made of 2 slices (volumes c and g above);
    -> External 120GB FireWire Disk in one volume.
    All volumes are formated using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
    The result is consistent and points towards an incompatibility of iMovie with either very large size volume or RAID array. Indeed, all tested effects preview fine on all tested volumes, however, they can be applied seemlessly on all tested volumes apart for my large size RAID array.
    When the project is on the RAID array, hitting the apply button results in the following:
    For the non-Quartz Composer 'fast/slow/reverse' effect and the Quartz Composer 'sepia tone' effect, rendering starts but then stops a fraction of a second later (as if it was unable to write the rendered file to disk). Resulting image in the video viewer is shifted diagonally to leave a black corner on the bottom-left.
    For the non-Quartz Composer 'aged film' effect, rendering starts and proceeds but the resulting image in the video viewer is again shifted diagonally to leave a black corner on the bottom-left. Note that resizing the iMovie window corrects this viewer issue.
    Conclusion:
    Is iMovie designed to support large sire RAID disk arrays ?
    Could anybody test a non-RAID array large size (say 500GB or better 1000GB) volume to check if it is size or RAID dependent ?
    When can we expect a fix ?
    Regards,
    Alex

    I had the same problem rendering a movie with iMovie 6 when the file is placed on a second internal disk.
    Clicking the 'Ignore ownership on this volume' tick box is a solution but I find it too blunt. My Mac is configured as a multiuser system and I bought the second internal disk to use it for my /Users directory. I thus don't want the different users to be able to create files in each others directories.
    When unclicking the 'Ignore ownership on this volume' tick box again I'm surprised to find that rendering still works fine for all users with the desired file integrity.
    I would have preferred to set up all the permissions using unix commands instead of all this magic. Can anyone explain the proper way to configure the correct permissions using the Terminal?

  • Oracle and volume- and disk array-based replication?

    Dear mighty all,
    here is a situation:
    Location A - active Oracle database + volume replication software + geocluster software
    Location B - standby location, i.e. standby database + volume replication software + geocluster
    Oracle is 10g
    The size of the database is 500 GB+
    The daily updates are roughly 2-3%.
    The comm channel between locations can have any reasonable bandwidth, however the jitter and latency cannot be guaranteed (i.e. no synchronous replication).
    This is a matter of protecting against a disaster (such as a complete destruction of Location A).
    The task is to make sure that Location B has the up-to-date data (RPO is 8 hours) and Oracle database can be started automatcially without any manual intervention. (I.e. cluster administrator pushes the button and the rest is done without human intervention).
    Here is what I am thinking of:
    1) volume replication software usually observes the atomicity on the disk block level. I.e. it is impossible that the data block being updated on the volume in Location A is updated in location B incompletely.
    2) When the database in Location A completes a transaction it writes data to the disk thus initiating the series of disk block updates being sent to Location B.
    3) From the database point of view, the transaction is completed, database files are updated.
    4) However there is a slim chance of Location A being destroyed while:
    * the volume replication software has started pushing through to Location B the updated disk blocks representing the completed transaction
    * but it did not finish transmitting the whole lot of disk updates (boom! the asteroid fell on Location A)
    * and volume replicator in Location B cannot roll back the disk updates since volume replicator does not know of the database transaction
    5) Volume replicator atomicity is disk data block while Oracle's atomictity is transaction (i.e. there cannot be a half-transaction applied)
    6) Thus, when we start Oracle in Location B, we will get inconsistent database, since the last transaction was transferred to Location B incompletely
    7) Sure that there is a way to fix this using various DBA tools, but that defies the whole purpose of automatic start
    So, my question is:
    1) Is volume- or disk array-based replication not a good idea in this case at all?
    2) or is there a way to nonetheless ensure the consistency of the database (say start it every time in the recovery mode)?
    3) Or should I dump the idea of replicating Oracle with volume replication and switch to DataGuard? (The cluster software can handle DataGuard).
    thanks a million for your answers, ye mighty all!

    Hi,
    this is not a "typical" question what is easy to discuss in a forum.
    Just some hints:
    1. using volume replication won't help you against logical or physical corruption
    2. RPO of 8 hours ? Sounds a lot regarding a change rate of 10-15 GB a day.
    3. 100% Automation is normally not a good idea in a database disaster scenario
    ( a false disaster detection can end in a real disaster!) I've already seen too much databases which had been totally corrupted by a false switch.

  • 'Flush' launchd without rebooting server?

    I created a daily 6am disk usage report, then moved it to 8am... but then it began running at 6am and 8am... so I unloaded the job and found the 8am job kept running, even though there's no mention of it in the 'launchd list' results!
    I've used the following one-liner to print out the contents of all the loaded launchd jobs, but none of them have been overwritten by my plist, or in any other way call the script that my launchd job was created to run... very weird.
    for i in `launchctl list | awk '{ print $NF }'`; do launchctl list $i ; done
    I've unloaded, reloaded, and anything else I can think of at the commandline or in Lingon (launchd interface), but can't stop this job!
    Is there any way to restart launchd, or flush its cache/database of jobs, without rebooting the server??

    Thanks for the thought BDAqua, but cron keeps its jobs in /etc/crontab while launchd uses XML plists and each job is a seperate file.
    I haven't touched cron, and cant see a way that launchctl or Lingon (both solely launchd utils) would have injected the job into cron, but I checked anyway and found it wasn't the case. cron has been deprecated in favour of launchd.
    launchd is the root of all processes, so i understand if there's no mechanism for restarting it (because it would kill everything else running) but I'm hoping there's a way to get it to rescan all the plist locations like it does on boot, so it will hopefully drop the spurious job and reingest the updated plist.

  • How to restart VSS writers without rebooting

    Hello fellow teckies.
    I'm having this problem when backing up with Symantec Backup Exec 11d where it generates errors about not being able to backup VSS sections on the C drive.
    I've already posted with Symantec.
    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/vss-c-drive-errors-when-backing-server
    They're saying to re-register and restart the services.  My question is, can the services be restarted without rebooting?
    Unfortunately rebooting is not an option as this is a critical production server.
    If anyone can answer, please let me know.
    Thanks :)

    What Santhosh mentioned is on the right direction. To restart a VSS writer, you need to restart the services or process that hosts the writer. Generally speaking, we will
    take the following steps when encountering VSS writer related issues:
    Retry the backup or restore operation that caused the error condition.
    If this does not resolve the issue, restart the service or process that hosts the writer, and retry the operation.
    If this does not resolve the issue, open Event Viewer as described in the "Open Event Viewer and view events related to VSS" section and look for events related to the
    service or process that hosts the writer. If necessary, restart the service or process, and retry the operation.
    If this does not resolve the issue, restart the computer, and retry the operation.
    If restarting the computer does not resolve the issue, provide the Event Viewer information to the vendor whose application is indicated in the event text.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee264212(WS.10).aspx
    As for the impact of the restart, it generally will not cause bad effect. However, it depends on the service which is restarted. Generally speaking, a service should handle
    all the related task, such as writing all data in memory into disk and committing the transaction, etc, when a properly restart operation is performed. If there are any particular requirement or order to follow to restart a service or application, you should
    follow the recommended restart procedure.
    Meanwhile, it is reported that when performing Shadow Copy Components backups with the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) installed you may encounter this issue. Please
    refer to the following Symantec article:

  • Failed Drive: Trying to install New Drive in 7 Disk Array

    We are set up on an Xserve RAID with 1-7 (250G, RAID 5) as one array, and 8-10 (400G, RAID 5) as as second array. In our first array of seven, drive 6 failed.
    We purchased a Hitachi Deskstar 250G ATA/IDE internal drive to swap with the failed drive. We did not purchase this through apple.
    We swapped the drives and put the new HD in the 6th port. NO GO. We placed the dive on port 11 as its own and the drive reads fine (as a spare).
    How do we add this drive to the 7 disk Array?

    I think yes, you have to find someone, who is able to read service parts of the disks. Apple's 'special' firmware is written here. The way is read this firmware from original disk and write it to non Apple disk. You will not be able to do this without special tools. Company which does data rescue from crashed disks can do this job for you. But as was written before, disk size must be identical with original drive.

  • Deleting local user profile on RDS without reboot

    I need to delete the local profile for a user on our RDS server, because of a problem with this user.
    Since the user was using RDS a few days ago, and RDS wasn’t rebooted since, I can’t delete the local profile. When I go to advanced system settings—user
    profiles. The ‘delete’ option is greyed out.
    I know that I can reboot the server then will be able to delete it, but since this server is serving many users, it means they all have to stop using it.
    Is there a way to delete this user’s profile without rebooting the server?
    I use sever 2008 R2.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    A local user profile is created the first time a user logs on to a computer. The profile is stored on the computer's local hard disk. Changes made to the local user
    profile are specific to the user and to the computer on which the changes are made.
    Windows security requires a user profile for each user account on a computer. The system automatically creates a local user profile for each user when the user logs
    on to the computer for the first time. The system automatically maintains the settings for each user's work environment in a user profile on the local computer.
    Windows Vista and later: User profiles are managed through the
    User Accounts control (UAC) panel item.
    You can open the
    Control Panel and click User Accounts, then click the Change User Account Control setting, dropped to the lowest turn off UAC. Press OK.
    Then you can use administrator account try again to see whether you can delete the local user profile or not.

  • Using Xserve with Sun StorageTek Disk Array

    Hi
    Is it possible to connect an Xserve with a Fibre Channel Card installed to a Sun StorageTek 6140 Disk Array?
    I don't see any devices in /dev. Is the Xserve limited to the Xserve RAID or can it be used with other storage solutions? Do I need to purchase Xsan to do this (e.g. partition, format and mount a device from the Sun disk array)?
    Xserve (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Oh my, I should retire...
    When I read that page I somehow confused all that X* stuff... :o/
    I was wondering if it is possible to connect other
    storage solutions than the Xserve RAID (like the Sun
    StorageTek ones) directly (or via switch) to an
    Xserve (the pizza box server )
    Of course you can connect any DAS storage device that presents itself as a raw device on the device channel in use (fc, scsi, ...).
    But reading the specs on that special Sun Raid I'd say that it falls into another category: SAN storage. And therefore it needs OS support/drivers which seem to be available only for Solaris, Linux and Win.
    How exactly do I partition, format and mount the
    virtual device under Mac OS X Server?
    DiscUtility.app? In CLI: diskutil
    I want to try this procedure:
    Connect the Sun Diskarray to the Xserve via the
    copper cables.
    (Perhaps reboot the Xserve)
    Partition with pdisk
    mkfs.xfs (or something similar mac os like)
    /dev/sda(x)
    mount /dev/sda1 /Users/
    diskutil
    see man diskutil
    But as said I guess you can't access this kind of SAN storage device.
    Am I completely wrong? It's the procedure in Linux,
    so it can't be very different in BSD (say: Mac OS
    X)...
    Same procedure as every year: install the driver then drink.

  • Changing CPU/RAM without reboot

    Hi,
    I just want to know if I can change the amount of ram and cpu of a VM without rebooting in Oracle VM.
    I did'nt find this information anywhere.
    I tested XenServer before and I couldnt. But I did'nt have time to test that feature in Oracle VM so far.
    Thanks!

    Fox Murder wrote:
    I just want to know if I can change the amount of ram and cpu of a VM without rebooting in Oracle VM.Yes, you can -- the Oracle VM Manager allows you to change RAM and vCPU count (as well as NIC and Disk) information without a reboot. In Oracle VM Manager there are two memory settings for each guest: Maximum Memory Size and Memory Size. The first is the largest to which you can set a running guest, the second is the currently assigned memory size. With cores, whatever the number was when you started the guest is the maximum -- you can then reduce the number of cores within the interface without rebooting.
    Any changes to maximum memory or core count requires a reboot of the guest, though.

  • How do you create an array without using a shell on the FP?

    I want to be able to read the status of front panel controls (value, control box selection, etc.) and save it to a file, as a "configuration" file -- then be able to load it and have all the controls set to the same states as were saved in the file. I was thinking an array would be a way to do this, as I have done that in VB. (Saving it as a text file, then reading lines back into the array when the file is read and point the control(s) values/states to the corresponding array element.
    So how do I create an array of X dimensions without using a shell on the front panel? Or can someone suggest a better way to accomplish what I am after? (Datalogging doesn't allow for saving the status by a filename, so I
    do not want to go that route.)

    Thanks so much m3nth! This definitely looks like what I was wanting... just not really knowing how to get there.
    I'm not sure I follow all the icons. Is that an array (top left with 0 constant) in the top example? And if so, that gets back to part of my original question of how to create an array without using a shell on the FP. Do I follow your diagram correctly?
    If I seem a tad green... well I am.
    I hope you understand the LabVIEW environment and icons are still very new to me.
    Also, I had a response from an NI app. engineer about this problem. He sent me a couple of VI's that he threw together approaching this by using Keys. (I still think you are pointing to the best solution.) I assume he wouldn't mind m
    e posting his reply and the VI's for the sake of a good, thorough, Roundtable discussion. So here are his comments with VI's attached:
    "I was implementing this exact functionality this morning for an application I'm working on. I only have five controls I want to save, but they are all of different data types. I simply wrote a key for each control, and read back that key on initialization. I simply passed in property node values to the save VI at the end, and passed the values out to property nodes at
    the beginning. I've attached my initialize and save VI's for you to view. If you have so many controls that this would not be feasible, you may want to look into clustering the controls and saving the cluster as a datalog file.

  • Mac Pro won't boot to disk array after Mac OS 10.6.8 combo update. Array two partition are there, just won't start off them anymore. Help, please

    My 2009 Mac Pro with Highpoint RocketRAID 3522 would no longer boot of the disk array as it had before. Boots off internal HD (still running 10.6.2), sees the array in the Finder, both volumes there pass Disk Utility Repair Disk tests, they show up in System Preferences - Startup Disk. TechTool Pro 5.0.7 sees nothing wrong with the primary boot partition. (didn't try the clone still with 10.6.7) **** frustrating. Tried reinstalling latest firmware for card. Nothing reported by the drives in way of any failure. zapped the PRAM, tried booting with option key, it doesn't show the array but two copies of the internal HD. Running out of ideas. Any out there?

    I am having the same problem with my HPT 4321.  After upgrade, wont boot.  Shows up everyone as bootable disk (even when holding option at startup) but Mac will not boot off it.  I installed a fresh 10.6.8 copy onto a usb drive and HPT drivers work so might just be something to do with the main drive being bootable.  To complicate things, the Snow Leopard DVD doesn't have the drivers to see the array so cannot use it for troubleshooting.  It will not start in safe mode. Downloaded combo updater to try and re-update but it doesn't let you install it on another drive.  HPT driver installer doesn't allow you to install on another drive so also can't re-install driver.  Only choice seems to be install OS on new disk and recreate everything from scratch, then SuperDuper back to HPT drives and hope that it was a corruption during the update but not sure that it will boot even after all that work.
    Anyone have a working computer with 10.6.8 and booting off a Highpoint RAID card?
