Dynamic Overclocking in K8N Neo2 Platinium

Dynamic Overclocking even in newest 1.4 BIOS version is useless.
Even if i choose Private option (1% auto o/c) my system is hanging (restart needed ).
I know Dynamic Overclocking function is for n00b, i use manual o'c always but if MSI put it to the mobo function it should works

  • MSI k8n Neo2 Platinium Stutter Problem

    Hi
2 weeks ago I upgrade my system from AMD2500+ to AMD64 3000. And problems started. My first MOBO was k8t NEo2. I gave it back because of stutter. Everybody said that was PSU problem and I changed my PSU to TAGAN 480W and MOBO to MSI k8n Neo2 Platinium.
After a Fresh winXP install, SP2, nforce drivers and nvidia drivers. I test the system with Flight Simulator 9 and stutter is there
I tried lots of things. Uninstalled all pci cards. checked irqs, used pci latency tool no success.
    Any ideas?

turn off any virus checker for a start
Theres a heck of alot of things that can cause stuttering..
turn off agp fast writes, turn off cool and quiet, turn off dynamic overclocking, ensure up to date gfx and platform drivers, ensure you are not overheating, what temps have you got on cpu and gfx?
do not run corecenter or any other background app that might have bugs in it, check the cpu usage of all running tasks, something might be spiking and causing stutter.
what drivers are you running with (list all)
is it only when playing networked or standalone too? what directx have you got installed? have you run memtest86 and checked your memory? are you overclocking at all? are you overclocking too much?
what are your benchmark scores for 3dmark 03? do they compare to others with similar spec?

  • Dual DDR problem with K8N Neo2 Platinium.

    Hi all,
    I have a new K8N Neo2 Platinium since last week. My configuration is : AMD 64 Venice 3000+, 2 x 256 MB Kingston Value RAM (KVR400X64C25/256) 160GB Seagate SATA, MSI FX5700 VTD 256MB etc...
The problem is I cannot work them in dual DDR mode! But they works in single mode very good. I know that my RAM pairs are not in vendor list! But I love my RAMs..They are CL2.5 and I think they are valuable...
    So what can I do?

Deathstalker , lots of value kinston ram is qualified .
Just take a look at NF4 testreport:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/7125/memory.pdf
And what you say about value ram vs non jedec spec OC ram is often quite the opposite as valueram follows the jedec spec
and is a more "hit" than miss with most motherboards contra what OC ram is .
Dxvideo , make sure you use memory slot 1+2 as said, also try booting to bios with one stick and save cas as 3.0
then install second module . Se if it helps with looser cas value .They also follow jedec SSTL 2.5v standard
but is verified by vendor -/+ 0.25v so you can also set voltage manually to 2.6v (or more) to help them out .
If it worked in dual chl on NF2 doesn't neccesary mean they will on A64 system as this memory controller is more picky than
the external memory controller on NF2 boards.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinium. Very unstable

I'm about to give up on this board..
No matter what timings I use, it keeps crashing to BSOD in Farcry and 3Dmark2003 Demo.
Sometimes the system will hang when trying to detect IDE slots (booting).
Also I get the Audigy2 "gameport can't find irq error" although this is the only PCI card I have and I've tried all slots. I have also disabled sound, firewire, LPT1, and COM port in bios, so there should be plenty of IRQ's!?
Updated bios to 1.2 - NO LUCK
Tried 3 different chipset drivers - NO LUCK
Tried 3 different display drivers - NO LUCK
Updated Audigy2 drivers - NO LUCK
My Samsung PC3200 RAM is 100% stable on 2 other motherboards.
Any suggestions for stable settings or fixes are appreciated.
    Hardware:
    Neo2 Platinium Socket939
    AMD64 3500+ Newcastle
    2x512 MB Samsung PC3200 (slot 3&4)
    Geforce 6800GT
    Audigy2
    WD Raptor 37.4 GB
    WD 80 GB SE
    Plextor 12A
    Enermax 350 Watt PSU
I heard so much good about MSI, but I guess I should have sticked with ABIT

I Flashed to BIOS 1.2Build3 without much improvement.
Then I unplugged the 80 GB harddisk, the Plextor DVDR and some fans.
Now everything was fine.. So I guess it must be a power issue.
This was what I could squeeze out of my system:
    AGP Fastwrite - ON
    Memory Timing - 1T
    CAS# Latency - 2.5
    RAS# to CAS# - 3
    Min RAS# Time - 7
    Row Precharge - 3
    High Performance - Active
    Agressive timing - Enabled
    Dynamic Overclock - Sergent
    HT Frequency - 5x
    CPU Volt - 1.65
    Mem Volt - 2.65
    AGP Volt - 1.65
I'm quite satisfied with this, because my Samsung RAM are not expensive stuff.
My problem with "Audigy2 Gameport" still remains, but I don't use this.
    System:
New install of: XP Pro - SP2 slipstreamed
    NForce 5.10
    BIOS 1.2Build3
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    3500+ Newcastle
2x512 MB Samsung PC3200 (dual mode)
    Geforce 6800GT - ForceWare 65.76
    Audigy2
WD Raptor 37.4 GB (System Disk)
    WD 80 GB SE
    Plextor 12A DVDR
Enermax 350Watts - Soon to be replaced (99% sure of this is the troublemaker)
I am now testing with a benchmark tool for Farcry. This seems to stress my system to the max and will show no mercy on faulty hardware/weak PSU.
    I use these settings:
    Resolution: 1600×1200
    Ultra quality option, Direct3D renderer
    Level: Pier, demo: 1.tmd
    Pixel shader: model 3.0
    Antialising: 6×
    Anisotrophic filtering: 16×
I think I will get the Antec TruePower 480 or 550, or maybe the new Neopower?
Just looked at the specs for Neo and it seems like it's weaker than the Truepower's!?
Any suggestions to a good PSU? Antec is my first choice, but I'm a bit uncertain with the new NeoPower

  • Msi k8n neo2 platinium and plextor 716SA - Serial-ATA

Is anyone using a the msi k8n neo2 platinum with a plextor 716sa dual layer dvd burner? if so how do you like the dvd burner? and Do you have any problems with it working with your computer? and can you boot from that dvd burner if you need to reinstall windows xp?

    Hi mate
I am trying to use this same drive on my K8N Diamond mobo. It's having none of it.

  • K8n Neo2 Platinium + Amd64 + Gainward 6800 GT = Stutter

Let me explain,  i have a 3500+ amd64 processor, 2 sticks of 512 crosair pc3200 ddr combined with a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (rest of the specs are in the subject heading) and i am suffering from minor stutters in games that are constant and don't seem to go away. So far my computer seems to beable to handle the Source engine the best even with the save/sound stutters, Pro evo 4 and Toca 2 perfectly but having said that on the otherhand ut2004 suffers from minor stuters every 5-10 secs as well as n4speed underground 2 demo and  thief 3. To me this is unaccceptable and i am trying my best to get to the bottom of this issue. Its not major stutters but minor constant ones that AREN't textures loading in as this stuters remain throughout the entirity of the gaming session. So far i have tried the follwoing -
AGP Aperture size and settled with 128
Disabled fastwrites (saw improvement with this setting off)
Messed with PCI Latency tool (biggest improvement with source engine by setting sb and graphics card to 64)
Tried many many drivers to no avail (using proper method to uninstall and install drivers)
Turned off all programs including anti-virus software and firewall
    Defragmentation many many times.
Trying different swap file sizes and even putting the swap file on different partitions.
Removing one sitick of the ram
    unhooking second dvd drive
Putting soundcard on different PCI slots
I am sure i have tried more but i am close to admitting defeat and buying a new mobo or ATI card. I really need this solved because it is taking up alot of my spare time as i am determined to solve this one as i spent near a grand on this kit and as the saying goes "i'm not a happy bunny" Please, some advice would be appreciated. Is it possible that all this comes down to this mobo or should i be pointing at the graphics card?

Ensure that all entries in your C:\ut2004\system\ut2004.ini file that have UseVSync are set to true.
    UseVSync=True
otherwise you will get screen tearing and stuttering. (Ut2004 is the best game ever written in my opinion)
the other thing is to install the nvidia sound drivers.. the realtek ones pull 5-10% peak CPU. I can help you with that if you want
The AGP bus speed i asked if you locked because if you have Dynamic overclocking set in the BIOS it will at peak times overclock your CPU and if you dont have the AGP bus locked your gfx card will get overclocked at the same time.
Make sure Dynamic overclocking is set off (DOT)
AGP bus frequency should be 67mhz to lock
Set your AGP appeture to 256 (I found this works best)
Hope these help somewhat.. most micro stutter issues on networked games are actually caused by faulty network drivers. Make sure you use the Nvidia LAN output not the realtek one. The nvidia one is MUCH faster. Ensure your drivers are you to date.
Using 67.03 is the best option for forceware right now so you have that covered.
When you run 3d benchmarks do you get stuttering in them also?
    All the best

Sorry i don't know much about this, everything is default, i have never messed with any of those settings. Under the bios the ram runs at 200 at dual speed. Doesn't the amd 64 run at 400 fsb? How would i check this?
Changed speed to fixed with Expertool, 10 for 3d and 60 for 2d. Computer is making less noise now, or graphics card i should say, just off to try out ut2004.
IF you start ut2004 onslaught (crossfire) under instant action and run about for a while and run to the middle flag point where all the action is you will notice stutters every 5-10 seconds maybe even more frequent. Wee stuters that last no more than a quarter of a second maybe.
Sorry for taking so long to respond...i'll be in all day today adn i am going to work at this issue. First off my Graphics card has shot up to 60 degrees while i am doing nothing but browsing so i have put back fan control back to dynamic and also changed my core speed back down to 350 because to changed to 400 for some reason as well as memory which was at 1100. No idea how this happened at all and concerns me but i have changed it back to 350/1000 and hit apply so all is well although im confused as to why my card is running hotter now. Also my HD has now started to lag abit when i am browsing folders (this does not effect games performance in anyway) so i am beginning to wonder if this may be my sata drive causing game issues as well but then that doesn't explain why some games work flawless.
Ok now to answer some of your questions. I always have Vysnc enabled in all games unless i HAVE to change it, aka need for speed underground 2, so that eliminates that. I am going to go into the bios now to check the few settings you mentioned. I'll report back.
Benchmarks i will have to check. I am sure i didn't get stutters but then its hard to tell when you have vysnc off. I'll try again later today.

When i turn off system and then i will turn off power supply (Antec Neo Power 480W) my comp is unplugged (no power).
Then when i turn on power supply (switch on Antec Neo Power 480W) immediately my comp start to live ! But ! There is no system booting ! Only what happen is fans on CPU, mobo, Graphick card and other fans starts working, my neon lights start flashing etc ...
Then when i push start button system starts booting ...
The problem is seriuos, coz when i turn off my comp and then in the night they turn of the power and then they turn on the power in my home my comp will start to live ! Fans start to works, neons starts to light etc !

i called .after stateing my issue i was quickly told to rma the psu. :biggthumbsdown:i called again dreading not haveing the use of my computer for more than a day .and was told this is an issue with abit av8 mobos and msi neo plat. 2.there tech team was currently testing this issue.i was told wo email [email protected] with system specs and issue.i was also told
there was no reports of hardware failure caused by our issue. :undecided:that was monday and no reply yet.the support person told me that this was a circuitry standard that was used on the 2 different mobo.      i love the power supply.i hope this issue[i know its small]is resolved easily.ive always used antecs products and never had any kind of problems.i still recomend them as well as msi.

  • Problem with K8N neo2 plat. and ram

    Hello everyone
Recently I had 2*512mo of PC3200 ( double side ),  they hold all approximately 235mhz has 2.5/3/3/8 1T (tested separately)
But, when I puts them into dual they are stable under memtest always with 235 2.5/3/3/8 1T but are unstable under Windows,  under xp they are stable until 207mhz maximum whereas they hold much higher under memtest
If I want to be stable A 235mhz under Windows it is necessary that I put them in 2T but y' has an enormous loss of perf
I tested different bios (1.37mod, 1.4 official, 1.41mod, 1.5 official, 1.8r3mod, 1.9 official and 1.B4mod) and always the same problem I also tested on port 1 and 3 (near to the CPU) and 2 and 4 but there it is still worse
Here if you have suggestion they are the welcomes
    In advance thank you

    Hello, thanks for your answer
My ram is Apacer value here but in ship infineon
My power supply is a LC power 550w
My video card is an ATI 9600xt sapphire
    The HTT/LDT is of 3x for a FSB of 235mhz ( ram synchro )

  • Overclocking of MSI K8N neo platinium

MSI K8N neo platinium, Bios 1.4

    Club3D 9800pro@xt
    Hitachi Deskstar 7K250-160 160Gb 7200rpm 8Mb cache S-ATA
    400w psu
Before when I had just one memory chip(512mb in slot 1), I had no problem to run 235Mhz x10. All I had to do was the following :
    Put hdd in SATA 4
    Set AGP to 68Mhz
    Adjust cpu voltage from 1.45 - 1.55v
Set mem. clock to 166Mhz (sense it will increase as you raise the FSB)
Now I`ve bought one more identic memory chip. I have now 2x512MB memory placed in slot 1 and 3.
I followed the same steps as above, but with terrible results. Max 215Mhz x10 stable.
I`m pretty sure it`s not the memory chips that`s the problem, as they run stable
with original settings ( witch is higher speeds (200Mhz) than those I run on the memory when overclocking (166 - 195Mhz).
I would be greatfull for any tips or solutions that you might think would help me (and others) to reach better o/c results.

try slots 1+2 instead of 3, i have found that i can't oc very well in 1+3 either.

the overclocking is done solely in bios.
Anyway, there seems to be different problems relating to waking up from sleep, I know that Cool'n'Quiet would stop working when I would wake up from sleep. I'll try overclocking mine a bit and I'll get back to you.
Also, check that the Save/Clear CMOS jumper is in the right position.

  • My K8n neo2 wont overclock at all!! plz help...

Hi, I just build my new machine, and after much problems I finally have it up and running at stocks speeds just fine, the problem is that I spent a lot of money buying Top-Brand components so I could overclock a lot, (I like It) but I cant seem to go upweard of 205FSB!! anything above that and the board wont boot at all forcing me to clear the Cmos!! I find this completely unaceptable for this board, being that my last board (an Msi one with nforce2) could overclock and athlon XP 2500+ barton all the way up to a 2800+!! Im really dissapointed at this, if someone could give me a few pointers as to what tweak in the bios (Im using 1.3 right now) it will be very thankful!!  ok, my specs are below, thanks!!
    Athlon64 3500+ socket 939
    Msi k8N Neo2 Platinum with 1.3bios
    2+512mb Crucial Ballistix pc3200 cl2
    BFG Nvidia Geforce 6800Gt
    36gb Raptor Hdd
    Enermax 420W power supply
    Thanks!!!

I think your problem is your power supply. Check what that MAX amp on your 12V rail.
I have nearly the exact same setup as you do and was unable to overclock the memory without lowering the memory timings much earlier than I expected too. For me I'm able to raise my FSB up to 207 at 2-2-2 timings. The max overclock I achieved was 220 X11 at 2.5-3-3 for a speed of 2420mghz. But it was not completly stable (it would bout but would lock up while gamming).  I had expected much better results than this... I bought good memory (Ballistix pc4000) I had a good 480W power supply... my processors ceilling should be around 2.6ghz. After reading this review on Anand Tech I think I found the answer... Athlon 64 Memory: Rewriting the Rules
On page 10 they make the remark that their Antec True Power 465W power suply was limiting their ability to overclock memory.... The Antec True Power is rated to supply 22A on the 12v rail. My power supply is only rated to supply 18A.  I bet your 420W is rated even less.
After reading that I fiddled with async overclocking and was stable up to 230FSB... then my hard drive freaked out... I was using sata port 1. I moved the hard drive to SATA port 4, but haven't tried much overclocking since.  Maybe if they put out a bios revision that I can adjust the HT on I'll try again. Until them I'm settled for running at 2277mghz.

  • K8N Neo2: How to boot after bad overclock settings?

Does anyone know - is holding the <insert> key down whilst booting supposed to work on the K8N Neo2?  i.e. reset the clock speed back to safe settings?
I have a new 4800+ processor that I have been trying and it doesn't like high memory bus speeds.  I keep trying an overclock setting (in the BIOS) and then finding it won't post.  Then I have to clear the cmos and re-enter all of the bios settings from scratch again.  Its becoming a right pain in the backside, to be honest.
I thought you were supposed to be able to just hold the insert key down on power up and it should boot with safe settings?
Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks
    Chip

The insert thing only worked for me a few times. If I recall correctly, you need to power down everything, including the PSU itself. Then, hold the insert key, power up the PSU and then hit the power button on the case...The only thing is, and I don't know if it is BIOS version related or what, it will sometimes power on when you hit the switch on the back of the PSU.
If you are messing with it that much, then I suggest using some Windows apps to OC. Get the BIOS set up with some decent OC'd settings, stable ones. Then use apps like Core Center(voltages), A64 Tweaker(memory) and Clock gen(clock speed) to work things out in Windows. Once you have some good settings going in Windows, restart and set it up in the BIOS. This way, if you set something wrong in Windows and the PC hangs or restarts on its own, it will restart with the good BIOS settings that you know will work...Then you make note of what not to do, lol, and continue on...I hope that helps a little...Good Luck.

  • K8N Neo2 question about overclocking and sata ports 1 & 2

    Hi guys,
I know that when overclocking, sata ports 1 & 2 cannot be locked like sata ports 3 & 4, and therefore hard drives on ports 1 & 2 can be corrupted.  However, I would like to understand what is failing when the unlocked ports get overclocked.  Is it the motherboard that makes mistakes or is it the drive?  Since the ports on the K8N Neo2 are Sata 150 (correct me if i'm wrong), would buying a sata 300 drive be able to survive overclocking?  Also, I would like to know the effect of overclocked sata ports on dvd burners as opposed to hard drives.  I am looking to buy two new Dvd drives/burners for this board and I would like to avoid buying IDE again.
So, can anyone answer the above questions in detail?
    Thanks,
    Steven
