Dynamic PDF documents

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/indesign/cs/using/WS328f5ee33f08f77d1e63e3d120f2667a4c-7ffe.ht ml

Hello Bob,
Sorry for my earlier (still in progress) reply. Was called away from my desk and mistakenly closed my browser window on my return.
If you don't wish to read the rest of my explanation that follows, the takeaway What I have yet to find is a clear, up-to-date roadmap through this maze that will allow me to produce the document I envision. I've found that I can build the document, but attempts at publishing aren't so luck. I need the to have the confidence that our clients, no matter if using a Windows or Mac computer, will see the presentation as I intend when I choose to publish to interactive pdf.
Before I go further, thanks again for your response. First, my system particulars:
Win7
Adobe Acrobat XI Pro
InDesign CS6
Adobe Acrobat Reader 11.5
What I'm trying to do based on my past InDesign experience (but with no experience in using interactivity features):
- Build a stand-alone training document that can be distributed by pdf (preferred) or by electronic file transfer (swf + html + asset directory). The document explains the use of our search and rescue airborne imaging technology and covers a variety of issues including theory, constraints, components, installation, and how to conduct a search.
- My idea will see the presentation feature text, photos, and videos. It may also feature short Flash animations, included as swf files. I've built some of these already.
- The user will be able to follow through the presentaion on their own, and replay/revisit content as necessary.
- InDesign's interactive features that I've been learning to use via my subscription to Lynda.com, and other online sources and magazines, include navigation buttons, video, links to other pages within the document, page transitions, scrolling text within a frame, and some form of breadcrumb navigation aid (similar to a website).
Here's where my trouble comes in. I've proven to myself that I can get all of these features to work within the application itself, yet when I try to publish the document to interactive pdf, I'm seeing more of the limitations than the possibilities. As I tried to say earlier, I don't really understand DPS, and hadn't realized that some features (scrolling text) pertain to this system only and not to pdfs. I have seen that I have access to the lowest tier of DPS through my Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, but it's use is fuzzy to me...it seems that I can create all I want, but have to pay to publish a .folio? What is a .folio anyway? Even after googling this, I don't completely understand the process as there doesn't appear to be any software to download. I'll need to spend some time with Lynda's training videos on this system.
Outside of DPS I've learned along the way that things like buttons and their changing states don't translate directly into an interactive pdf, and that you need to first output a swf for each page of your InDesign document and then place these swf files one by one into your pdf from within Acrobat Pro. Or if I ignore the button issue, I've learned that built-in page transitions won't work alongside other interactive features in the output pdf. It may just be me, but there appears to be a lot of, "Yes, you can do that...but...."
Without making my explanation more difficult to follow, I guess that I've been frustrated when it comes time to use features that InDesign now features. The creative process itself is a fun and enabling process within the program, but this comes crashing to the ground as I encounter the nuances and limitations on the publishing end with no clear roadmap around the obstacles. I have a sense of the technical challenges that come from trying to do what I'm hoping to do (Adobe certainly must have put a lot of technical wizardry into the software), but from a user's perspective, I'm only seeing the walls.
When I come across similar experiences of others during my research, it only serves to reinforce my feeling that perhaps I'm in this too deep. What the program makes so relatively easy to create, really isn't that easy to follow through with on the publishing side of things. Lots of landmines in between, and no clear route through.
Are there other learning resources that you might suggest?
Thanking you again,
Dale

  • Dynamic PDF document. (adding pages in between from time to time)

    hi,
I am working on a catalogue that will be expanded from time to time.
On this catalogue there will be a couple of content pages that have hyperlinks link to the proper pages. If I add pages at the end of the this catalogue, hyperlinks will not get affected.
However, if I want to include pages inbetween this will bring the whole content page refering to the wrong pages. For example: on content page; apple - page 10 goes to page 10.
If you add 5 more pages after for example page 5. Now, on content page; apple - page 10 still goes to page 10, but should in fact goes to page15.
So the question is, is there ways where the links automatically goes to the right pages; Where the links automatically changes to refer page 15?
I hope someone can help me.
    Thanks.

    Hi All,
Thanks for responding. I am new here.
Let me explain how I did my hyperlinks.
I create hyperlink destinations and on the index page I look up this page. As I understand this is not the best method in my case, however, this was not the requirement before.
What do you think is the best method for creating a dynamic pdf exported from indesign, which should have (or closely have) the following requirements:
have index page which will go to the proper page (eg. you click on "apple page10" on index page and this will go to page 10)
you can add pages in between anywhere in the future where links and page numbering on the index page changes automatically (eg. if you add 5 more page about pear after page 5, "apple page 10" should now go to page 15 and on the index page should automatically changed to page 15 as well.
of course, changes should automatically be adjusted not only by adding but also by deleting.
Any ideas is welcom and appreciated, thanks.

  • Adobe Forms Object Creation in PDF document dynamically

I have the following scenario: I have database of questions and answers, i need to build a webdynpro application that generates a PDF document with the content of this database, but in a dynamically way, for example i have one question like "What is the best color in your opinion?" and four answers like "Yellow, Red, Blue, Gray", i need to take all the questions and the answers from the database and build the PDF form. What are your recommendations for these case? Is there a way to generate a Topic and for these topic 4 checkboxes in a dynamically way?
All these data come from ECC.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Bruno,
You  can add or remove subform instances dynamically from your form.
    BodyPage1.Subform.instanceManager.addInstance(1);
Create one subform, that has 4 RadioButtons and 4 InputFields, bind the inputfield with the options.
    Hope this helps,

  • Dynamically bind website text field values to PDF document

    Hi there,
I am in search of a step by step tutorial on how to generate a pdf document based on values from website text fields.
I have a form produced in Live Cycle Designer ES3 and a website in which we insert test results for our company to a MySql database.
My thoughts was that when we have inserted values on the website we could have a link to the pdf document and the same values would
somehow magically appear on the pdf. Have read somewhere that this can be done with XML and the use of different 3rd party programs.
    Is this possible?
What approach would be the easiest? Perhaps someone knows about a tutorial on the matter?
Data is stored from PHP website to MySql database. Website produced in Dreamweaver CS5
Thanks in advance for any tips/help!
    Regards,
    Christian

It's possible with an XFA form as well as an AcroForm, but to do the work on a server additional software is needed as you mentioned. Adobe's offering is in their LiveCycle lineup and possibly . Others from third-parties include FDFMerge, PDFlib, iText, Debenu Quick PDF Library, and others. The idea is you merge the data with the PDF on the server and serve it up or save it on the server and provide a link on the HTML page that's returned. Documentation for these libraries will include samples, but you'll also have to learn how to do this securely if that's important for the system you're putting together.

  • Error in certifying a PDF document

When I try to certify a PDF document containing an editable PDF XFA form using the Digital Signature web service. I get the following error:
    ALC-DSS-300-017 Certification of Static Shell XFA Form PDFs is not supported. A Shell PDF is a special type of static or dynamic XFA Form PDF, which contains XFA streams that are not in synchronization with the rendering available in the PDF version. See Signatures Service Documentation for more details. (in the operation : certify);
Could anyone let me know how to resolve this issue?

    Thanks for the answer steve..
We are using Designer 9.0. Using designer we created the XDP file. The PDF was generated using the forms service of Adoble LiveCycle ES 2.5. So I was facing issue in certifying PDF generated by forms service and not when PDF was created using the designer.
As a test we changed the default form properties of the XDP file from static to dynamic. Again PDF was created using the XDP file via forms service. When this PDF was certified, the error was no more occurring. So we were able to solve the issue by changing form properties of XDP file from static to dynamic

  • Word macros are disabled after converting to a PDF document.

We work with Word templates that contain macros.
After you convert a Word document into a PDF document, the macros of the attached template are disabled.
The conversion takes place via the Adobe Acrobat icons.
    Used Products:
    - Windows7
    - With Office 2007 SP2
    - Adobe Acrobat 9.3.3 Pro
The described problem only occurs in Word.  Outlook, Excel and Power Point are not affected.
Thank you for your time and help

    Hi Buster,
The error message you were receiving occurs when you try to convert a dynamic PDF file created with Adobe LiveCycle Designer.  This file is usually already a fillable form.  Unfortunately there is no workaround available for converting documents like this within the ExportPDF service.
    I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of further assistance.

If you save your form as Static PDF, it works.
But most of the time we need the Dynamic XML form. So, I am also stuggling with this issue.

  • How to make dynamic PDF form flowable across 2 pages in LiveCycle?

I have a dynamic PDF form that is flowable on each page but not both. By that I mean that the fields on the 2nd page won't move to the 1st page if there is available space. How can I make the entire document flowable? I am using Adobe LiveCycle ES2 Designer to create the form. Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
you need just one page which is flowable and allows page breaks.

  • Dynamic pdf created in adobe 8 not working in Adobe reader 9

    Hi ,
I designed dynamic pdf using Adobe 8 livecylce.
I am able to generate the dynamic pdf with values filled in from the database in Adobe 8 reader, standard and professional versions.
I recently installed Adobe 9 reader and when I try to generate the dynamic pdf , the pdf if generated but the values of the fields comes as null.
Is dynamic pdfs created in 8 not compatable with adobe 9 reader? Do I need to redesign the documents in 9 again ?
Please let me know, I designed a lot of pdf documents using 8 livecycle under the assumption that it is going to work in future versions.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I figured our there was a setting to enable/disable  Javascript which caused this issue.
I was using javascript in the LC 8 for manipulations in the dynamic pdfs.
I enabled the javascript and now it is working fine.
    Thanks,

  • How to attach a PDF to a primary PDF document?

    Hi guys!
    What we want to achieve:
We want to attach dynamically an PDF (located anywhere on the server) document to the primary PDF document which is linked to a workflow. There are different PDF documents which can be attached. It depends on the input data which document will be attached. Afterwards the primary document with the attachment will be send to an other livecycle user. That's it.
Is there a simple respectively standardized approach? Or a helpful QPAC? Thanks for all hints!
    Nico

The easiest way if you're using LCWF 7.2 is to put the PDF in a process variable that is a list of Document variables (so the PDF is one item in the list). Then in the User QPAC check the option that says something like "Copy task attachments FROM a list of document variables". If you do this, the QPAC will take care of creating the task attachment for you.
