Dynamic VHD attached to disk management increases in size

When attaching a dynamic VHD to the disk management, the size of the VHD gets increased by some 32 MB, why does this happen ? What information does the disk management writes to the VHD. When attaching the VHD in read only mode, the Size remains the same.
VHD Spec : The VHD is created using a utility.
The VHD has a Block Size of 524288 Bytes.
Thanks,
Sajith

The block allocation table adds to the size of a dynamic disk, an expanded dynamic disk will show larger than a fixed disk of the same usable space because of this.  In addition there is a hard drive header and footer almost like a header and footer
on a word document, it is always present on a dynamic disk which adds space compared to a fixed disk.

  • Why source HardDisk Increases in size?

Every time I connect to a network drive (LAN or iDisk) as soon as I transfer files by making a copy from the local drive to network hard disk, my *source Hard Disk also increases in size*. Please try yourself, check Get Info for a hard disk from which you copy. This is very strange. It came to my attention when my partner tried to upload total 10GB to his iDisk at Apple site, his local hard drive increased by almost the same size. This is true for any computer I tried. Since the idea was to keep files offline on a server and get read off original files from local drive after making a copy, the increased size of local hard drive defeated the purpose.
Even when I checked with small size files, I got the same story, for files as small as 2MB. Anytime working with any network drive I got the same result. And after ejecting iDisk or other Network drive, the startup drive changes just a little, decreases for less than 5%, and 95% of size increase is just waste of space. It became apparent that this is not a localized problem.
Any ideas why this is happening?

When transferring files over a network this can increase the amount of ram you are using very quickly and if you dont have enough physical ram this can increase the virtual memory. Virtual memory uses your hard drive disk space.
This may be a clue. Also tmp files are created when copying files.
After you complete a transfer and notice that your drive usage has increased take a note of the increase then reboot your mac and see if the drive space is reclaimed.

  • New Virtual hard disk wizard hangs after creating new vhd from huper-v manager on windows 7

New Virtual hard disk wizard hangs after creating new vhd from huper-v manager on windows 7 workstation.
Windows 2008r2 hosts the hyper-v server. I can create VMs and VHD's when connecting to the server locally with the hyper-v manager.
The issue arises when I try to connect to the hyper-v server from my workstation which runs windows 7.
I have installed  The Windows6.1-KB958830-x64-RefreshPkg.msu that was suggested for windows 7 sp1.
I can connect to the hyper-v server, create vm's but  I cannot create vhd's  the gui just hangs with no errors in event log or on screen.
The files are there on the hyper-v hard drive but i suspect they are just created by windows as they are written and are not valid.

I've had just the same solution. Both did Hang Fixed size and flexible.
    Two parts were taken:
1 - KB939820 for Windows 2003 server based domain controllers
2 - disable using IPv6 on your NIC
Result - both types of VHD's are created normaly.
    -----Infrastructure----
Windows 2003 Domain upgtraded to 2008R2
    Windows Server 2008R2 Hyper-V - virtualisation clustered
    Windows 7 Pro - Hyper-V management

  • HT1478 Hi, I want to partition my Ipod Touch so that I can transfer music files to this partition for download to car. Attached Ipod to PC, but coudn't see in Disk Management. Then selected Manually manage Music and Video but still can't see??

I want to transfer music from my Ipod Touch to my car. I found out that I had to partition the Ipod to do this. I attached it to my PC with the USB cable but couldn't see it in the Disk Manager window. Googled why not and saw that I had to select Manually Videos in the Summary section on Itunes. This was already ticked off (selected) and still can;t see the Ipod icon in Disk Manager. What else can I do to partition this Ipod?
    Thanks in anticipation ...

iTunes Match on your computer can give you the same higher quality files.
Run iTunes on your computer.  Show your music library by Song in list view.  Add the columns for Bit Rate, Kind, and iCloud Status to the list view.
Any song that is shown as Matched for iCloud Status, that is NOT already 256 kbps (or higher) for Bit Rate can be downloaded from iCloud at 256 kbps AAC.  For example, if you have an old album from a music CD that you ripped years ago at 128 kbps MP3, and it is "matched" by iTunes Match, you can replace the lower quality files you have now with 256 kbps Match AAC audio file (which is shown for Kind).
To do so, select the song, or a set of songs, on the library list.  Press Delete.  Confirm you want to delete the song (but do NOT check the box to delete song from iCloud) and choose to move song file to the Trash.  The songs remain on your iTunes library list, with a "cloud" download button next to the song name.
Click that button to download the song from iCloud.  Because the song is Matched, you get the replacement as a 256 kbps AAC audio file, instead of the original 128 kbps MP3 file (or whatever lower quality format it was before).
You can go through your iTunes music library, and replace lower quality Matched songs with higher quality versions, thanks to iTunes Match.

  • Hyper-V VM can't start with VHD attached, error 0x80070422

    Hi,
i'm in a big trouble with Hyper-V on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Hardware is a HP Proliant DL360 G7. Role are DC, Hyper-V (yes, i know it's not recommended), AV client is Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10.2, and everything was working fine for more than a year.
Here is the full story, with the first part of problem i resolved.
    First part:
I had problems with HP NIC (nc382i) when trying to update drivers to last version, and with HP Network Config Utility. I updated NIC drivers, then reboot, and i had the BSOD on boot, even in safe mode. So i had a look to minidump with debbugger, to find
reasons, and it seems the ksecdd.sys driver was the culprit (cryptographic kernel driver), but didn't get why, unless Kasperksy had to to something with it...anyway, i was able to boot by using the last good know configuration, and then I
removed the virtual switch on Hyper-V, dissolve HP network team (4 NICS), update drivers, then HP NCU, then tried to add a new Hyper-V virtual switch, all of these of course with VM stopped, and with autostart disabled on host reboot. I had BSOD only in normal
mode, no more on safe mode, so i used again last good known configuration, removed Kaspersky Endpoint Security, HP team, and virtual swith, used all drivers which were old working versions, made again HP team, virtual switch, and everything went fine, at last!
Boot with no errors, network was up and usable, all services were fine. Maybe it isn't important, but the only thing i realised is that network takes long to be up on reboot...
Now, second part with actual problems: i tried to start VM in Hyper-V...and i had the famous errors:
Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller (Instance ID {XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}): Failed to Power on with Error 'The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled
or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.' (0x80070422).
    And events ID 12140, 12010 and 12030
No matter what VM i tried to boot, it won't. Even if i try to create a new one, same issue.
I had a look everywhere to find solutions, so i tried with no luck :
    - Change registry key to let correct a timing issue with FSDepends.sys and with
    VHDMP.sys ("Start" REG_DWORD at "0" instead of "3" in "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FsDepends")
    then reboot
    - Verify all access to registry, files, etc. with procmon utility to find a security problem
    - Uninstall ARCServer BrightStor Backup, clean in safe mode any trace of Kaspersky with
    kavremover utility
    - Reverse to old HP BIOS which i know is working on others servers with same configuration
    - Verify again access to file and registry while trying to boot VM with
    procmon utility
    - Removed Hyper-v role, then after reboot, install all same HP drivers for NICs, HP NCU, which are working on others servers, then reinstall Hyper-V role, create new VM...
    - Verified many times files integrity with sfc (online and offline...)
Finally, i was able to boot a VM, only if i remove attached VHD, and i use only a DVD on IDE Controller, for booting for example on a Windows Server ISO. If i use an SCSI Controller, even without a VHD attached to it, i have other error:
Microsoft Synthetic SCSI Controller (Instance ID {XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}): Failed to Power on with Error 'Insufficient Memory' (0x8007000E).
So i think the problem is with kernel driver, vhdmp.sys, or something like
vdvroot.sys, but i don't know how to correct this, and i'm in a dead end...is someone know for example what means the
0x80070422 error ? How can i verify kernel driver integrity?...
Any suggestion will be greatly apreciated, thanks!

    Hi,
That error occur often is the Unknown Device installed which was related to vhdparser, maybe the AV soft change the vhdparser.
Please try to changed the startup value for FsDependes from 3 to 0 and also uninstalled the Unknown Device which was related to vhdparser from device manager.
If you are using the pass-through disk please install the following hotfix:
"0x0000000A" Stop error on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based or Windows Server 2012-based Hyper-V server that has many pass-through disks

  • LENOVO U310, windows 7, SSD drive showing in bios but not in the disk management

    Hi,
    I recently installed windows 7.
But after installing I found out the the computer is not waking from sleep. When I enter the password and press enter the screen becomes blank. I have to again restart the system.
Doing some googling I found out that SSD drive does the caching when iRST is used.
So I tried to look for SSD in the Disk management, But I can see only 1 500 GB HHD. It doesn't show the SSD drive.
Even the Intel Rapid Storage technology is not detecting. It shows internal empty port 0.
But when I checked in the BIOS, in the system information i can see the SSD mentioned.
If any one of you have faced the same problem and/or know some work around then please help.
    Thanks,
    Sumit

Sounds one of the following problems:
1.) The drive is formatted MBR w/ win 8 features enabled / legacy disabled.
2.) A "dynamic" drive is present.

  • Convert a dynamic vhd to fixed vhd using Convert-VHD cmdlet

    Hi folks,
I have dynamically expanding vhd. Now I want to convert it to fixed size vhd.
I used the  Convert-VHD  cmdlet, which works fine.
But if I give the source and want to overwrite my dynamic vhd to the fixed vhd,  it is throwing error, such the file exists.
Convert-VHD –Path "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" –DestinationPath "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" -VHDType Fixed -DeleteSource
Is there any other option (like -Force) available for this ?
Note: Without using a temp file and renaming, I hope we have a better solution
    Thanks,
    Saleem

    Syntax is like below
    Convert-VHD -Path C:\temp\200MB-Dynamic.vhdx -DestinationPath c:\temp\200MB-fixed.vhdx -VHDType Fixed
you need to have different names :-) like a copy command in the old days of DOS
otherwise the Option -deletesource in your example would delete the disk file ? makes no sense right
What is the Problem to fire a Rename Command after the Convert ?

If you are seeing daily increases and decrease in your disk utilization (for example it increases during the day/overnaight but in the morning the disk space has recovered what you are seeing is the impact of Tar optimization.
The Tar Persistence manager is the underlying storage mechanism for CRX. Data is stored in append only tar files. This means the when you update a node or property the new values are written to the Tar files, the indexes are updated to point to the new location, but the old data is also still left in the file. This mechanism allows for a much faster write mechanism. So the more you frequently you update existing content in your repository the larger you Tar files becomes.
There is a process called Tar File Optimization that by default is scheduled to run from 2 AM to 5 AM server time. This process identifies all the orphaned data in the Tar files and deletes, there by reducing the size of the tar files on disk.
So if you are in heavy content migration mode, or moving large amounts of content between instances you can see large swings in your disk space utilization as the Tar file balloons up during the day and then shrinks back down over night. In some cases depending on how large your repository is the 3 hours allotted by default is not sufficent to complete the optimizaiton so you may not be recovering all your disk space. During normal production operations this will normally average out over time and the 3 hour window is enough. However during periods of heavy usage, especially during QA or content migration you may find that your tar files are ever increasing in size. If that happens you need pick a period of time over say a weekend and trigger the Tar File optimization to run until complete to recover as much of your disk space as possible.
See http://helpx.adobe.com/crx/kb/TarPMOptimization.html for details on Tar File Optimization.
As someone else pointed out you may also have an issue with your data store which requires a different clean up method.
Another possible culprit is your Lucene index files. Depending on your data model and repository size you can swings in your Lucene indexes because like the Tar File it periodically cleans itself up and large amounts of content change can cause this cycle to become more pronounced.
This blog post dicusses in more deapth both Tar File Optimization and Data Store garbage collection. http://blog.aemarchitect.com/2013/06/17/importance-of-aem-maintenance-procedures-for-non-p roduction-boxes/

  • Software mirror problems with disk management and diskpart

I have a small server. It was originally using a single 250GB drive and one partition. It was a Dynamic Disk. Using Acronis I successfully did a backup/restore of the system to a 1TB drive to provide for storage.
I have two new same model Western Digital Blue standard format (512 sector) 1TB drives. One has the restored working system mentioned above. The other is empty. It is showing as a dynamic disk unallocated.
I attempt to mirror the system by using disk management, right-click on system drive and select "Add Mirror", get and choose 2nd disk selection, and the system churns for a few seconds and returns error message about DiskMgt not having up-to-date
info. I close and restart DiskMgt and get the same thing.
I invoked DiskPart and executed Select Volume 0, ADD Disk=1, after a few seconds I received the same error message.
I have tried both of these methods numerous times. I ran chkdsk /f/r on the primary drive and retried with same results.

  • Disk manager not assigning usb enclosure drive a letter

LAPTOP:  Toshiba Satellite 1135-S155 Windows XP Home Edition.
current preinstalled 40 GB HDD message says it is failing & backup.  want to backup to usb enclosure using western digital 80 GB HBB (didn't want to shock the system). computer does detect my toshiba 4 GB flash drive & assigns drive letter E.  DEVICE MANAGER detects the western digital hdd as: usb device generic void disc, PROPERTIES claims Location 0; VOLUME shows Disk 1, unknown, unreadable, partion style as Not Applicable, 0 MB.  Disk Management does not show usb device thus doesn't even assign a Drive letter to it.  not attaching any other usb device while i have usb enclosure hdd hookup.  have gone through troubleshooting, reinstall, basically what i can find to do from "Windows XP Inside Out Manual" unless not looking in right place.
Should i place new western digital 80 GB HDD into computer, use original restore discs that came with system, then place old 40 GB HDD into usb enclsoure and copy that hard drive onto the new 80 GB HDD? Or what?
found a hero once in this forum & hopefully will find you again.  love my old clunker & don't want to give her up yet!

Hey, I'm back.  And with  SUCCESS!!!!
Was able to take new hard drive and connect to a laptop running VISTA.  VISTA recognized the new hard drive that was in the same USB external enclosure that I was using.  VISTA recognized in both Device Manager & the much needed DISK MANAGER.  Was able to initialize immediately w/no problemos!!  YIPEE SKIPPY.
Did I dare to be BAD?  You betcha!  Took the initialized HD back home & hooked up to the TOSHIBA Satellite 1135-S155.  Again, success.  My old DISK MANAGER saw it, I was able to continue to partition & format it!!!  Why WinXP Home Edition couldn't initialize it? - Is one I'll leave for the cosmos.
Anyway - Who says you can teach an old dog new tricks - HA!  Little did they know about ME - oh, ahem, and of course JERRY aka The HERO and also The Wondrous CEE-64.
So excited was I, and how could I NOT be?  That I immediately tried the FREE Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition that was suggested by The Wondrous CEE-64 on the 08-29-2009 7:03 PM session.  As I was hoochie-cooching around in my NEWER SHOES, I suddenly I noticed that after burning 'Volume 5' onto a CD-R - ERROR MESSAGE (Error occurred while writing to file), hmmm - inserted a different CD-R, again same message, hmmm - inserted a different CD-R yet, hmmm - same message & got the hint.    Shall I go on?  OK you asked for it.
After checking Western Digital website & running one of their programs.  The initialized, partitioned, formatted WD Scorprio Blue HD was just being recognized as a USB Generic Mass Storage Device. Hmmm - maybe because the Western Digital Edition couldn't detect the new hd being from WD, could that be  the problem?  Closed and uninstalled the FREE Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition.
Per HERO Jerry's suggestion on 8-27-2009 12:00 PM, I downloaded FREE Acronis True Image 2010 Home Edition.  Loaded fine, reread the users guide (serveral times).  Attached the USB external enclosure (YES, the hard drive was inside) started the program, used CLONE DISK option, TA-DA it worked.
Yep, it has to reboot.  Okey-dokey.  UNTIL it came to me having a problem.  This TOSHIBA requires an F1 button to be pushed after start up AND it doesn't like the USB GENERIC MASS STORAGE DEVICE to be attached during boot up.  It stops & requests either F2 (setup) or F_ (I forget) and doesn't respond until I 'safely remove the USB device', then the F1 button.  SOMEHOW, after swapping out the drives  (THAT went really well, pat on the back) & Started the computer up.  YUP, Toshiba intro screen pops up, then the F2 etc. screen, & waited longer than usual.  Pushed the F2, saw that it is the WD drive with larger capacity, exit, then a dark screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner came on.  That was it.  Nothing for a minute or two, tried just shutting the laptop off.  Wouldn't.  Ended up swapping the hard drives while the fan was running.  Using the old TOSHIBA 40GB drive again.
Whada say?  One more time for old times sake?  Or should I just hang it up?  What do I do now, pleazzzze and thank-you.
PS - Can't wait, this stuff is getting good!

  • 'Disk Utility has lost connection with Disk Management Tool' w/ RAID 10 set

Using 4 internal drives, I have specified the following setup for each:
2 partitions, 1 'speed' of 5 GB and 1 'data' of whatever remains.
The 4 speed partitions stripe to a single RAID volume correctly.
The 4 data partitions are used to make a RAID 10 volume as follows:
The first 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-A'
The next 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-B'
    These complete correctly.
Upon attempting to strip data-A and data-B in order to finish the RAID 10 setup, Disk Utility quits with the following message:
"Disk Utility has lost connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility'.
A search here and on the nets reveals only that this message appeared in 10.3.x when attempting to repair disk permissions and had to do with a rogue iTunes support file. This is occurring on a blank system (no iTunes installed) so I don't think its the same cause.
Note that I was able to complete this setup under Tiger several times without issue, so it seems to be unique to Leopard. Does anyone know what is going on and hopefully suggest a workaround?

To answer my own issue and leave a marker here for others, I was able to successfully set up a RAID 10 partition using diskutil, indicating that the problem is Disk Utility itself and not the RAID implementation.
Disk Utility has proven itself to be bugridden (must restart frequently to get updated view of volumes; drops device names at various times; etc.) and this latest bug would seem to suggest that it should be avoided in favor of diskutil for any serious RAID construction.

  • Disk Utility has Lost Connection with the Disk Managment Tool

    Hi,
For starters, this problem is not associated with the thread that Brian Z. has posted at the top of this forum. Having said that, here's my problem:
I had installed Security Update 2006-003, and Quicktime 7.1. Permissions were repaired before and after each installation, and all went well.
Some hours later, I was experimenting with Apple Remote Desktop. I had activated ARD in the System Preferences>Sharing pane, and it provided me an IP address associated with ARD. I then turned on Airport, and ARD provided me with an IP address associated with that connection. However when I turned off my modem connection, System Preferences>Sharing hung, and had to be Force Quit.
    Console Log follows:

Thinking a plist had become corrupted, I trashed the following:
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist
    com.apple.Remotemanagement.plist
    com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist.
System Preferences started out very slowly, but then all the panes except Sharing would work ok.
I booted from the install disk and performed a Disk Repair. There were no problems reported.
When I tried to run a Repair Permissions, after about 20 seconds I got the, "Disk Utility has lost connection with the disk management tool and can not continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
I quit D.U. and the Installer, and was able to successfully run a Repair Permissions from the D.U. in my Utilities folder. It had no problems to report.
Continuting to troubleshoot the System Preferences problem, I then trashed the com.apple.preferencepanes.cache. This solved my System Preferences>Sharing problem.
However, I am still unable to perform a Repair Permissions after booting from my install disk (I get the subject message). Repairing permissions from the Disk Utility in my Utilies folder works fine.
Any thoughts out there on a logical way to troubleshoot where my problem is? Is there a way to get a console log when I'm running DU from the install disk, or a comparable source??
    Thanks,
    Bob

I found this crash log that was generated about the time I had problems with System Preferences hanging.
    Thoughts?
    Bob

I partitioned my MacBook Pro and installed Windows 8 in it.....now I can't find my partition when I pressed option key when booting up.....so how can I do to find the partition to boot...I can see it in the disk manager in Mac....any ideas? thanks..!..

    Hi LamboMong,
    just try this:
    http://refit.sourceforge.net
install, reboot twice and choose the Windows-Partition on next startup.
(The apple-bootloader doesn't display all bootable harddisks.
With rEFIt you can boot from all partitions/harddisks on your computer.)
I hope that will solve your problem.

  • Remote Access Disk Management

I am wanting to be able to manage the new installation of windows 2012r2 core, which is a workgroup.
I can see the event logs etc, but when I try device manager or disk manager I receive rpc error.
What do I need to configure?

I've posted this to a number of forums.  It has allowed me to manage almost everything remotely.  There are still some things with disk manager that don't work quite right, but they can be handled correctly from Server Manager instead of disk manager.
I run this on every server I build and I try to do almost all my management remotely.  Some things do require command line.  Microsoft has gotten a lot better over the years on the MMCs handling things remotely, but they are not 100% there.
Oops, as I clicked submit, I saw the fact that your server is in a workgroup.  My script assumes domain.  But,
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/fe80f0aa-0697-4657-a1da-19d36b036698/guide-to-remote-manage-hyperv-servers-and-vms-in-workgroups-or-standalone?forum=winserverhyperv is another post talking about how another person accomplished
