Dynamic volume expansion

Hi,
We are looking to buy a storage array (eg. StorEdge 6130).
As we require near 24/7 storage availability, we need to know if it is possible to expand a RAID 10 or 5 volume during run-time (that is, we do not want to umount/reboot etc) and then be able to resize the file-system (eg. VxFS).
Do we require extra software eg. VxVM or can we do this with the software which optionally comes with the above array?
We would run any OS (Solaris) on any type of Sun host which we will need purchase as well.
Any help or pointers much appreciated!
SJB

Don't take this the wrong way LPG, but try running the spellcheck over your posts before you post.. particularly if they're meant to be informative and helpful (or spend more time checking over them). When there's a lot of little errors it detracts from the overall impression of the information....
Best,
Mickey.

  • Concept about ASM Dynamic Volume

What is the concept behind ASM Dynamic Volume in coordination with ACFS and how a ADVM manages this ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Sandy

    Hi Sandy,
ASM Instance --> ASM diskgroup --> ASM Volumn --> ACFS fs
ADVM driver contols IOs from filesystem to disk level.
    + 11.2.0.3 onwards,database files were supported.
+ with compatible.advm greater than 11.2.0.4 ,you can use ADVM volumn as ext3 /ext4 filesystem.
+ You can use acfs snapshot to backup acfs filesystem .
+ with compatible.advm greater than 11.2.0.4 ,you can convert RW snapshots to RO snapshots.
Also you can take backup of snapshots .

  • Oracle dynamic volume

Can any one please explain the concept of Dynamic Volume and Dynamic Volume Manager concept in ASM

Google and the Oracle ASM documentation are definitely a good start to answer a complex question like concepts of ASM. The information can however be a bit overwhelming if you do not have experience with ASM yet.
In a nutshell, Oracle ADVM extends ASM by providing a system kernel driver that allows the user to create a virtual device using the ACFS filesystem. That virtual device is stored in an ASM diskgroup and can be mounted by the OS like any other device. This can be useful since ASM diskgroups are not directly accessible by the OS and the storage is only accessible through the Oracle ASM instance or the ASMCMD command line utility. The ADVM volume is however not meant to be used for Oracle database files. Keep in mind that ADVM is optional and the necessary kernel driver is version dependent, which requires access to Oracle support to work with current OS releases.

  • Use of ADVM (ASM Dynamic Volume Manager)

In oracle 11g 2 There is ADVM (ASM Dynamic Volume manager) is there, If i make 50GB of advm from 1TB of Disk Group. I want to know that 50Gb of Dynamic volume will use oracle db files or not.
exactly I want to place my tablespace files on that voulme.
Edited by: shayad on Sep 22, 2011 10:21 PM

Have a look at Oracle® Database Storage Administrator's Guide.
Scroll down to the diagram that depicts where ADVM resides in the s/w stack.
    Why ADVM?
ASM does not only support storage for Oracle databases - but also for any other 3rd party application. The latter is done via ACFS - a cluster file system. This is similar to OCFS and Red Hat's GFS and so on.
A volume manager is used to manage such file system volumes. Linux has a default volume manager called LVM.
ADVM is a volume manager specifically for dealing and integrating with the underlying ASM storage system.
You would usually not use ADVM for ASM diskgroups used by Oracle databases (Oracle databases interface directly with ASM diskgroups and do not need a file system interface).
You can for example use ADVM to manage a cluster file system for a mySQL database - and use custom failover to fail that database over to another node should the current one fail (as the cluster file volume containing the database files will also be available on the other cluster nodes).

  • Dynamic EVDRE expansion

    Hi All,
we have a requirement of dynamic expansion of evdre based on the user selection.
Out of 6 dimension, user may select as many as he wants, and based on the selection we need to expand the evdre and generate the report in a different sheet.
We tried to give the dimension from the excel reference, but due to the unselected dimension in selection sheet, we received EVDRE error.
When we tried to restrict the the EVDRE range cells, we received the below error:
    "runExpand: RowKeyRange<>RowExpandOptions wks:Sheet1".
Please suggest on it and provide a workaround to achieve the requirement.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Umesh Jethwani.

    Hi Umesh,
This error usually means that the rowkeyrange is not matching with the expansion options. If your row key range is set to do an expansion on 3 rows, then you should have 3 rows in the expansion options.
You have specified some specific number of expansions in your EVDRE, lets say 3 dimensions in rows. You are passing the expansion dimension members from another sheet. If you dont get all the 3 expansions in the sheet 2, then the expansion option will not match with the rowkeyrange.
So, even if the user doesnt select any dimension member, you need to pass some member (may be the highest node) to that dimension.
    Hope you got my idea.

  • What is PROPLINK and can you use a dynamic FLOWAN expansion?

    Hi Experts,
Everybody is familiar with the notorius FLOWAN property in the Account dimension.
I wonder if anybody has found a way to dynamically expand ACCOUNT & FLOW dimension in an assymetric way.
    Example Account dimension:
    Account
    FLOWAN
    601000
    F05 F06 F07
    602000
    F20 F30
Desired EPM-addin row expansion should then dynamically form like this:
    601000     F05
                     F06
                     F07
    602000    F20
                     F30
You have the option in the EPM-addin row definition to use an expansion based on a property of another dimension.
That works perfectly fine for one member, but not for multiple members.
Has anyone found a good way to work around this?
In the EPM-addin user guide, you can find a reference to a certain PROPLINK function (I guess migrated from EVDRE).
I wonder if this was able to perform this kind of expansion.
    Thanks for you comments!

I'm keen to know if this is possible too - with or without PROPLINK.
It seems that it works fine with single values in the FLOWAN property but reverts to the Context member if more than one value is present. Comma, semicolon or space-separated values ssem to make no difference...
Anyone seen a work-around or different way of achieving this?
    Thanks

  • Identity Sever Dynamic Group expansion

I have few dynamic groups defined based on 'dynamic filter' (example:- ldap:///dc=abc,dc=com??sub?(myRole=Helpdesk)). All these group's have 'dynamic member only' attribute set to true.
I always have to expand it manually from configuration to refresh the static users in this group. Is there a way to make this process automatic ? for example:- automatic expansion every 1hr?
    Thanks!
    Kabi

There is no timing thread built into OAM - so you have to work this out outside of the product.
I have, for example, used Quartz and an HTTP client library to 'click' the expand button on a regular schedule. You can also bring in the Access SDK if you need an ObSSOCookie to get to the Admin interface.

  • Difference between ASM Disk Group, ADVM Volume and ACFS File system

Q1. What is the difference between an ASM Disk Group and an ADVM Volume ?
To my mind, an ASM Disk Group is effectively a logical volume for Database files ( including FRA files ).
11gR2 seems to have introduced the concepts of ADVM volumes and ACFS File Systems.
An 11gR2 ASM Disk Group can contain :
    ASM Disks
    ADVM volumes
    ACFS file systems
Q2. ADVM volumes appear to be dynamic volumes.
However is this therefore not effectively layering a logical volume ( the ADVM volume ) beneath an ASM Disk Group ( conceptually a logical volume as well ) ?
Worse still if you have left ASM Disk Group Redundancy to the hardware RAID / SAN level ( as Oracle recommend ), you could effectively have 3 layers of logical disk ? ( ASM on top of ADVM on top of RAID/SAN ) ?
Q3. if it is 2 layers of logical disk ( i.e. ASM on top of ADVM ), what makes this better than 2 layers using a 3rd party volume manager ( eg ASM on top of 3rd party LVM ) - something Oracle encourages against ?
Q4. ACFS File systems, seem to be clustered file systems for non database files including ORACLE_HOMEs, application exe's etc ( but NOT GRID_HOME, OS root, OCR's or Voting disks )
Can you create / modify ACFS file systems using ASM.
The oracle toplogy diagram for ASM in the 11gR2 ASM Admin guide, shows ACFS as part of ASM. I am not sure from this if ACFS is part of ASM or ASM sits on top of ACFS ?
Q5. Connected to Q4. there seems to be a number of different ways, ACFS file systems can be created ? Which of the below are valid methods ?
    through ASM ?
through native OS file system creation ?
    through OEM ?
    through acfsutil ?
    my head is exploding
Any help and clarification greatly appreciated
    Jim

Q1 - ADVM volume is a type of special file created in the ASM DG.  Once created, it creates a block device on the OS itself that can be used just like any other block device.  http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E16655_01/server.121/e17612/asmfilesystem.htm#OSTMG30000
Q2 - the asm disk group is a disk group, not really a logical volume.  It combines attributes of both when used for database purposes, as the database and certain other applications know how to talk "ASM" protocol.  However, you won't find any general purpose applications that can do so.  In addition, some customers prefer to deal directly with file systems and volume devices, which ADVM is made to do.  In your way of thinking, you could have 3 layers of logical disk, but each of them provides different attributes and characteristics.  This is not a bad thing though, as each has a slightly different focus - os file system\device, database specific, and storage centric.
Q3 - ADVM is specifically developed to extend the characteristics of ASM for use by general OS applications.  It understands the database performance characteristics and is tuned to work well in that situation.  Because it is developed in house, it takes advantage of the ASM design model.  Additionally, rather than having to contact multiple vendors for support, your support is limited to calling Oracle, a one-stop shop.
Q4 - You can create and modify ACFS file systems using command line tools and ASMCA.  Creating and modifying logical volumes happens through SQL(ASM), asmcmd, and ASMCA.  EM can also be used for both items.  ACFS sits on top of ADVM, which is a file in an ASM disk group.  ACFS is aware of the characteristics of ASM\ADVM volumes, and tunes it's IO to make best use of those characteristics.
    Q5 - several ways:
    1) Connect to ASM with SQL, use 'alter diskgroup add volume' as Mihael points out.  This creates an ADVM volume.  Then, format the volume using 'mkfs' (*nix) or acfsformat (windows).
    2) Use ASMCA - A gui to create a volume and format a file system.  Probably the easiest if your head is exploding.
    3) Use 'asmcmd' to create a volume, and 'mkfs' to format the ACFS file system.
Here is information on ASMCA, with examples:

  • Wild volume changes thru Home Theater System

I have a Sunfire Theater Grand system hooked up by HDMI cable from DVR to HT. HDMI from HT to TV. Optical Audio from DVR to HT from HT to TV. For some reason I am getting large volume changes.  It seems to be switching from stereo to Dolby Digital would be my guess.  An easy example that really bugs me is that when i watch the local news the dolby digital comes through perfect then we go to national news and the audio I believe must go to stereo because the center channel is non existent. This also happens when watching shows and then a commericial comes on and blows you out of the house.  Is there any way to have the audio transmit the same for all reception?  I didnt have this problem with Dish Network. This is so frustrating.

    Edvander wrote:
Acutally the audio is digital on all channels (not switching to stereo).  It just has huge volume changes between programing and commercials.  Pretty frustrating.  Does anyone else have this problem?
There could be two issues at work.  The first is how your receiver decodes and outputs DD2.0 vs DD5.1.  The second is relates to the audio levels on the channels themselves, including whether or not the content is encoded with dialogue normalization
It is very common for channels to insert commercials at higher volume levels.  Sometimes this is done on purpose, and other times it is a specific to the settings on the commercial insertion equipment and/or the encoded levels on the commercial source.  Verizon passes most video and audio as is, so many of the differences you hear are due to the source content.  On most channels, Verizon does not process and adjust the audio levels as DirecTV and Dish Network do.
You might check to see whether your processor has a dialogue normalization setting.  Most Dolby Digital 5.1 programs are encoded with a dialogue normalization value, which is meant to equalize volume between DD5.1 encoded content on a particular channel.  When this setting is enabled, it usually serves to reduce the volume levels on DD5.1 programs encoded with dialogue normalization, and then you may hear a volume spike when you are hit with commercials and other channels that are not encoded in that way.  If dialogue normalization is already enabled on your receiver, you might disable it add and observe the difference on your system.
Some newer receivers do have a built-in audio adjustment feature (ex: Audyssey Dynamic Volume, Dolby Volume).  This is meant to equalize the volume levels across different channels and sources, much like DirecTV does with their signals.

  • BPC - Multiple Dimensions in Row Expansion - NOEXPAND issue

I have an EVDRE report in BPC where I am expanding on two different dimensions in the row (Entity, Geography).  I want the Entity Dimension to dynamically expand.  However, I want the Geography dimension to be static so I am using a NOEXPAND.  The issue I am having is that now Entity won't expand when I change my CV.
Does anyone have a solution to this issue?
    Thanks.
    -Keith

    Marvin,
Thanks for the response.  Let me start by saying the opposite is true.  There can be many entities under one geography which is why I made the Geography a property of Entity so I think we are ok there.
I think I am still a little unclear how that code you provided will only give the Geography that is associated with a particular Entity on the Row Key.
    Let me explain:
Ihave an Entity Dimension [E1, E2, E3] and a Geography Dimension [G1, G2].  I also have a property in the Entity Dimension that tells me which GEO_ID each Entity belongs to (i.e. E1->G1, E2->G1, E3->G2).
If I have an input schedule with static rows, I can use an EVPRO in the second column of the row key to pull out the proper Geography key.  However if I have a dynamic row expansion I will get the following:
    E1, G1
    E1, G2
    E2, G1
    E2, G2
    E3, G1
    E3, G2
But what I really want is just
    E1, G1
    E2, G1
    E3, G2
Because those are the proper mappings.  Does this make more sense?  Is there a way to accomplish this dynamically?  The only way I have been able to do it thus far is by use a cell key range In which I take out geography from the row expansion and use an EVPRO in the cell key range to provide the proper Geography ID.
    Thanks for the help.

  • What are basic and dynamic disks?

Basic disks and dynamic disks are two types of hard disk configurations in Windows. Most personal
computers are configured as basic disks, which are the simplest to manage. Dynamic disks can make use of multiple hard disks within a computer to duplicate data for increased performance and reliability.
A basic disk uses primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives to organize
data. A formatted partition is also called a volume (the terms volume and partition are often used interchangeably). In this version of Windows, basic disks can have either four primary partitions or three primary
and one extended partition. The extended partition can contain an unlimited number of logical drives. The partitions on a basic disk cannot share or split data with other partitions. Each partition on a basic disk is a separate entity on the disk.
Convert  basic disk to dynamic disk: MiniTool Partition Wizard
Dynamic disks can contain an unlimited number of dynamic volumes that function like the primary partitions used on basic disks. The main difference between basic disks and dynamic disks is that dynamic disks are
able to split or share data among two or more dynamic hard disks on a computer. For example, a single dynamic volume may actually be made up of storage space on two separate hard disks. Also, dynamic disks can duplicate data among two or more hard disks to
guard against the chance of a single disk failing. This capability requires more hard disks, but improves reliability.
