E 4200 wireless signal problem

I've bought a E4200 router because of it's "maximum performance". With the normal settings i have a wireless range of maximum 10 m in the building.  after 5m I've got a low signal.
I tested a cheap Netgear-router, which had the same range as the E4200 a 125 Euro.
Is my E4200 broke or is it just a bad buy? The settings are standard (that shouldn't be the problem, I guess!?)

I live in an area where all the neighbors use the 2.4Ghz band. The signal strength at 2.4Ghz is very good throughout my house but the throughput of the router is poor because of the number of users on that frequency. If two devices are transmitting on the same channel when there is a transmission conflict, the transmissions stop and must be restarted which reduces the throughput. In other words with more users on the 2.4 band there will be more retries no matter what the signal strength.
I tried the 5Ghz band and discovered that none of the neighbors use it. Great! But the 5Ghz signal strength drops off quickly. Initially I had the router on the first floor at one end of the house with the SmartTV (which has a WiFi capability) on the second floor bedroom at the other end of the house. If I selected the 5Ghz band, the TV could not receive enough signal to connect. With the 2.4 Ghz band the signal strength was good but the throughput was low and internet video was jittery.
As an experiment I moved the router to the center of the basement on a table. I configured it as a 5Ghz Access Point (bridge mode). I used the router provided by the ISP for routing the hardwired ethernet connections. I now have good signal strength at 5Ghz everywhere in the house. The distance from the router to the TV is about 12 feet less than when the E4200 was on the first floor. And there is more wood flooring and walls between the router and the TV.
I believe the signal pattern of the E4200's antennas' is likely a vertical cone pattern. In other words signal strength seems weaker if the router is on the same level as or at a steep angle to the router. But if the router is below or above the recieving device then a stronger signal is received. Of course this is conjecture based on my experience playing with the location of my router in my one case.

  • E2000 - Wireless Signal problem

    Hello,
I am sorry if posting on an old thread is wrong on these forums, but I'm new here so I hope you will forgive me.
Anyway, I have the same problem here, my wireless from my Linksys E2000 router NEVER works. I've tried the same things and I have also tried to change the Advanced wireless settings, none of these things worked.
When I unplug the energy cable from my router for ~15 secs, I sometimes can connect to a Wireless signal, this signal remains for about 30 seconds and is then gone again. This happens even if I'm standing right next to my router.
I have no idea what the problem is, even I find this story very unbelievable, but I have tried everything I could and still we never have Wireles...
(Mod Note: Post moved to start a new thread..)

    Try these troubleshooting steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] On that same setup page reduce the MTU value to 1400 from Auto
4] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.
Secondly avoid using any other wireless devices like cordless phones, microwave oven etc nearer to the router. Update the drivers for the wireless card of the wireless computer. Then check the wireless connection status.

  • Wireless signal problem

I am having trouble with the wireless signal in my son's room. It is only about 20ft from the airport. Do some frequencies travel through walls better?

Distance is not the issue here, but obstructions likely are.
In general, 5 GHz singals are really only useful in the same room as the wireless router, or if you have line of sight between the wireless device and wireless router.
2.4 GHz signals are much stronger, and penetrate walls and ceilings better, but unfortunately this band is very susceptible to wireless interference from other electronic devices, like cordless phones, BlueTooth devices, and other wireless networks in the area.
How many walls between the AirPort Extreme and the center of the other room?
    How are the walls constructed?
Do you know if the type of insulation used on the wallboard or fiberglass included metal foil?

  • Wireless signal problem with WRT160Nv3 Firmware Version: v3.0.02

My 24" iMac doesn't seem to like the new router very much. Half of the time it can't find the router, half of the time it finds it with very low signal and can't connect to it due to connection time out error. My iPhone seems better, but sometimes I can only see two bars even when I put it on top of the router. PS3 keep loses connection when on wireless.
The PS3 is only 4 meters away from the router, and the iMac is only 1.5 meters away. There is nothing in between these devices apart from me and I am NOT fat at all.
The router is siting on the floor against a wall whereas iMac and PS3 are on a table next to it. I believe any normal wireless devices should operate fine within such short range.
Meanwhile those devices are working fine with Apple's Airport Express before it was replaced by this new router. My iPhone can even do App Store update in my car parked at the ground floor car park, while the Airport Express was at exactly the same place where the router is now, in my flat up at 16th floor!
Setting wise, everything under wireless setting is left as factory default, apart from the security setting which was set to be WPA2 personal.
From what I've experienced, I think this is a faulty device. I just need someone from Linksys to confirm this for me.
    Cheers
    PS. Wired connections are fine.

Sorry scrooge, I can't log in to the forum for a few days due to keep getting servlet errors when I click the login button.
Anyways, I've changed the channel to 8 with 20MHz because there were three wireless network on channel 11 already. Then the problem seemed solved. But I'm just been curious and correct me if I'm wrong, the 20/40MHz mix setting was operating at 40MHz as I can see it was using two channels 6,1 but unfortunately those two are both also been occupied.
To me, it seems like the router was only trying to stay on three channels 1,6 and 11. I know that those three channels are real "CLEAN" channels but shouldn't the router try to use other overlapped channels as well, when those three are obviously occupied?
I didn't try the beacon interval or Fragmentation/RTS Threshold settings, because I think those settings can only provide a slight advantage over others who are sharing the same channel, and they don't actually solve the conflict problem.
    Cheers

  • I am having wireless wifi signal problems on my ipad 2 64GB 3G

All other gadgets and laptop is connecting easily with good signal strength but my ipad 2 is having signal problems, unless i dont sit right in front or very near to the router i cannot have enough signals, does this issue come under warranty ? as ipad 2 64gb is **** expensive and its useless if you cannot even browse anything on it.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    Additional things to try.
Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.

  • Wireless Signal Range Problem

Dear All, We are using Cisco wireless controller 5508 with Cisco Aironet Access Point 1131G –E-K9
The wireless coverage in rooms is very weak . We have 10 rooms in each floor and 2 access points in each floor. If anyone help me to increase the singe strength

Just to add to Scott's post, I would like to say "Nice hotel". And this is it. The walls in the hotel are made out of concrete blocks, I guess? In some cases the walls are thick enough to affect the propagation of wireless signals per floor.
I would also agree with Scott's recommendation that if you want to have guest enjoy your wireless facility, then you need to move the AP away from the hall and into the rooms. Depending on how your management sees the importance of guest wireless, I would recommend you stick an AP per two adjoining rooms. Should you find the need to do wireless voice, the APs in each room should be strong enough to cover the hall.
You may also have to look into getting a WLC.
I stayed in the Pullman in Dubai back in 2013 and they had three APs along the hall per floor. Since the bathrooms are always closest to the hall, wireless signal weakens by the time the signal reaches the user sitting on the study table or on the bed, for example.

  • I just got my cable company to switch my wireless router to a wired one considering now I have the wireless airport device (the newest one) but now I can't get a wireless signal. The router works when directlyplugged in,the aiport wireless device is green

I just got my cable company to switch my wireless router to a wired one considering now I have the wireless airport device (the newest one) but now I can't get a wireless signal. The router works when directlyplugged in,the aiport wireless device is green. I've tried going through my new MacBook Pro settings and it the diagnostics check, it says network changes detected, I tell it that it "yes" does connect to a cable modem, it tells me to restart it, after I do it asks if there are any other devices hooked up ( firewall) and when I say no it tells me that it can't fix the problem.
Now I know that I probably have a new IP address because of the cable company switching the boxes but it was working fine with the other box, now there isn't a signal to be had on it!
Please anybody out there that can help!!!??

Any time you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle with the new equipment. Check out the following AirPort User Tip. Please post back your results.

  • Powerbook G4 Can't See Wireless Signal

My brother gave me his old Powerbook G4 which has Airport installed (10.4.x). It picked up a neighbor's unprotected wireless signal in his apartment, then picked up the wireless signal in the Atlanta airport -- no problem.
But when I returned home the G4's Airport won't pick up the wireless router's signal in my house (with the router just a few feet away).
I have Time Warner's Wideband service and the cable modem that comes with the service is both a modem and a router with dual antennas. My Mac Mini picks up the wireless signal from that router with no problem.
But the G4 doesn't "see" the signal. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is grayed out when the G4 is running. But the network name shows up in the Airport icon's drop down menu. But when I try to connect to the wireless network -- nothing, in spite of it having connected on two different networks as I mentioned above.
Question: Is this G4 too old to connect to a "newer" wireless router like the one Time Warner installed? Any other ideas what the connection problem could be?
    Thanks,
    WK

CRMDVM -- Thanks for the helpful info -- you are probably right on both counts:
The apartments where I picked up a signal is in an "old folks" apt. complex, meaning the router I was picking up was probably old -- compatible with the G4 lineage. And the Atlanta airport probably has a wireless system to allow the vast number of old and new computers that people carry to connect.
My Mac Mini connects via WPA2 Personal security code, and I set the G4 to the same security (in the Network preference pane) but still nothing. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is still grayed out -- it isn't the "blank" icon as when Airport is turned off. It has the wireless wave lines in the icon, but just grayed out.
Maybe the G4 is just too old to "see" the newer wireless signal from the new modem/router.
Thanks again for your help -- you definitely provided more than I knew. (btw, I'm just above you in Union County in Stallings).

  • Macbook Pro weak wireless signal

I recently purchased a new battery for my MacBook Pro and ever since, I've had terrible wi-fi signal. I've got an iPad, MacBook and iPhone that all have no problem connecting to the network, from all over the house, but with my MacBook Pro, I've got to be within 5 feet of the router or I have no signal at all.
Any thoughts on how to increase the wireless signal so that I can get out of my house again? =)

    Hi
I've had a similar problem - see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7278377#7278377 . Things continued to get worse, so that sometimes I was losing the signal for several hours at a time: meanwhile my nearby G4 iMac continued to connect with never a hiccup.
In the end replacing the original airport card with a Sonnet Aria Extreme N Mini PCIe 802.11n card has (touching wood, crossing fingers and taking all similar necessary precautions) completely sorted it. No other changes - I'm still using the 11g base station. However, mine was a first revision MBP with an 802.11g card: I guess yours has an 11n card already.

  • Re: WRT350N ----- Very poor Wireless signal strength from my router

I have a WRT350N router.  I had it for a year now.   In the begining the Wireless Signal strenth was good.
I used to get 4-5 bars in my bed room which is about 10 meters from the router.
Now I have my laptop sitting 1 feet away from the router and I get only 1 bar.
I upgraded my firmware.  I rebooted my router a few times still no luck.
    Current Firmware Version:  v1.04.4 build 003 Jul. 14, 2008
Can any one tell me whats the problem. More importantly can some one help me resolve this problem.
    Thanks
    Sunny

As you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30 seconds and reconfigure it from the scratch, as it is advisable to reset the router after upgrading the router's firmware.
On the router's setup page,Under Wireless tab..Give unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID). Change the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz... Under the Advance Wireless tab, change the Beacon Interval to 75 and click on save settings.... Now,check.

  • WRT54GS - 7.0 Wireless signal disappears periodically

I have had my WRT54GS - 7.0 for about two months. Because of the way my apartment is set up, I am using a wireless card in my pc instead of a wired LAN connection from my cable modem. My ISP is fine; the computer wired to the router never experiences any difficulty.
My problem is that once in a while my wireless signal dips or disappears. My pc is only about 40 feet from the wireless router, and most of the time my signal is quite strong. I have software that allows me to see competing wireless networks and I know that I am not sharing a channel with anyone. It doesn't happen regularly; it will be fine for a week or even a month, then I'll have a horrendous couple of days where nothing I do can get it to connect. Sometimes it is two hours before the signal comes back. Cycling the power and resetting the router has no effect.
Should I buy a wireless repeater, or is there some other sinister agent at work besides cruddy signal transmission?
Any and all suggestions are welcome, and thanks to all who took time to read!
Message Edited by dgold on 04-11-200704:54 PM

    dgold!
Make sure that there are no interferences between the two devices. Changing the channel would do as well, an if still it's the same. Set the "advance wireless settings" on the router [Beacon = 70; RTS = 2305; Fragmentation = 2306].

  • Weak Wireless Signal After Power Outage - Anyone else??

We had a storm Sunday 7/25 and lost power, now my Verizon Fios router's wireless signal is extremely weak and I can't connect to it unless I'm in the same room with the router. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've had no luck with troubleshooting tools and calling Verizon (why are they so confused and lost all the time). The wireless adapter works fine, but the signal is so weak it can't be connected to. HELP!!

I had EXACTLY the same problem, and I am in Maryland (same storm, I bet). I just cured the slowness. Here's how.
The instructions on the Verizon website for rebooting your router do not include "Unscrew the coaxial cable." You have to do that, as well as turn off the power. The Verizon guy I talked to tonight said you get a "better reset." I kept my router powered off and unscrewed for a while--a good couple of minutes at the minimum. Then, when I screwed the coaxial cable back in and powered back up, I had full-strength connectivity.
    Good luck, fellow Marylander.

  • Wireless signal booster

We have bt infinity and good network coverage in the home. Recently we converted the garage and cannot pick up the signal from that room. This is now my sons bedroom and he has an Xbox and iPad which he normally uses wirelessly but now cannot. Is there anything we can buy to improve the wireless signal. Ideally we do not want a wired connection. I have called the help desk but to no avail. Thanks

  • WRT54G Wireless Router Problem. Need Help!

I'll start with the basics of my situation and if more details are needed, I will provide to the best of my ability.
I have a comcast cable internet connection.  I have 6 computers in my house. Two of them are downstairs (which is where our modem is.) The other four computers are upstairs.  All of these computers are Desktop computers with the exception of one laptop.
My laptop (which is Windows XP) can pick up a random wireless signal from the room it is in.  I also found out a way to share the internet connection on the computer by going into the properties of my network connection and enabling internet sharing on it.  This means if I connect a network cable from my laptop to another computer, I can leech the connection from my laptop and have internet access on the other computer.  I also  had a switch that I used to connect the other 3 computers upstairs by means of the laptop.  The problem was, the laptop was using someone else's wireless connection in the area, and it wasn't strong enough to keep up a constant connection.
I decided, if I can leech someone else's wireless connection, why not have my own.  So i recently bought WRT54G Wireless Router and set it up on one of the computers downstairs (because that's where the modem is).  It works fine as far as connecting my laptop to the internet from upstairs.  My laptop can access the internet through the connection I set up in the LELA program.
Here is the part I am confused about.  Everything is plugged in correctly as far as the router is concerned because the laptop can access the internet.  But when I connect an ethernet cable directly to one of my other computers (which are Windows Vista, but I didn' t have a problem with it previously when I was leeching someone else's connection), the connection drops on my laptop, and the other computer still can't access the internet.  A notice pops up that says its trying to identify the network, but it gives an error that says there is something wrong with the DNS.  As soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable connecting my laptop to one of the other computers, the connection is fine again on the laptop.  It's only when I connect the computers together that the connection drops.
I just don't understand why it wouldn't work when I created my own network if it worked with another network with no problem.  My whole point in getting a wireless router was to have a router within good range to keep up a constant connection on my other computers that aren't in range of the modem downstairs.  I just don't know where else to look.  I'm not sure if it can be fixed on LELA, manually through my wireless settings, or if it could be a problem with one of my computers' settings.  I've tried many different things and I'm not sure what else to do so any help is most definately appreciated.  I feel like I've tried everything.  I know it's possible because I've one it before, I just need the help because I'm not much of a networking person and I don't know what I should start with to make this work.
Thank you to anyone who can help or even point me in the right direction.

Access router setup page ...Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed- Provide any non-linksys name .... • E1000 Router Wireless signal will disappear after some time

    Hi,
I have set up the E1000 this week, i found that the wireless signal would disappear after some time if the wireless connection is not in use.
    For example, on my iphone
    1. I search for the wireless signal and successfully got the IP
    2. after using for some time, i put the iphone aside
    3. when i want to use the wireless again, the iphone is not yet connected to the wireless
    4. i would then need to search for the wireless signal and connect again.
This causes problems because i am using some VPN connection at my laptop and it would disconnect it.
Is there any config that would keep the wireless signal ?
    Thanks!

Try changing the wireless channel on the router.
Also try to change some advanced wireless settings on the router. Click on Wireless tab and go to Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.
    See if that helps you.
