E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12

I have successfully installed ADE and downloaded my first ebooks from my library. I downloaded some more books, but now when I try to open the .ascm files with ADE, I get the following error:
"Unable to download
Error getting license. License Server Communication Problem:
E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12"
Need help resolving this error on a Windows system. A search of the internet found a solution for a similar issue on Macs and Keychain, but I have not found any Windows solutions.
System details:
Adobe Digital Editions v2.0.67532
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

Guesses, not promised solutions.
It may be that the ADE authorization has got corrupted somehow.
Try de-authorizing (ctrl-shift-D) and restarting ADE.
It should ask you to re-authorize.
That may help; no promises.
Have you got an eReader device plugged in while you are trying to access the book?
If so, try with it unplugged.  There is a bad interaction between ADE2.0/Overdrive and certain devices.
If that works, the best longer term solution is probably to install the older v1.7.2.
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

  • How do I correct this error E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12?

I am trying to download some books from the public library and am receiving this error message E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12.  Does anyone know how to correct?  Ever since I downloaded the new version of Adobe Digital Editions I have had nothing but problems.
    Thank you!!

Some ebook sellers use the Adobe DRM mechanism, but rather than relying on the Adobe ID for authorization have their own Vendor ID (their own user/password).
You could be able to read your old books but not the new one if all the old books used the Adobe ID, but the new one used a separate Vendor ID.
Check with the ebook seller if you should be using a separate  Vendor ID.
ADE1.7.2 does not support different vendor IDs.  V2.0 does, but I am not sure exactly how to get it to do so.
The user guide says ' The best way to do this is to supply an Adobe ID or Vendor ID, associating the book with your ID.',
but doesn't say how to do this.

What I did was deauthorized and reauthorized my ADE, both the device and computer. It worked. I was able to download my books onto my e-reader. Here is a link to what I did Deauthorizing and reauthorizing Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 on your computer and your reader | Washington County Coopera…
I would think that it shouldn't matter if the ADE is 2.0 or 3.0.

  • Error Message  E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12

I know I have been told to deactivate my ID and then reactivate it. I was told to go to the help menu to do this. Guess I am kind of dumb but don't fully understand. I have gone to the help menu on for Adobe digital but can't find a place to deactivate it.
Full error message is  Error getting license    License Server Communication problem  E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12
This problem started because I was trying to download a book on a computer in another city. Live chat support helped download the book but now that I am home and adobe digital doesn't work on my computer they say they can't help me.

    The command to deactivate is
    Ctrl-Shift-D (Windows)
    Cmd-Shift-D (Mac)

  • Error code "e_auth_bad_device_key_or_pkcs12"

    Hi,
I recently got a "Licence error" with all my ebooks in Adobe Digital Editions. Some epubs came from Google Play, some from Kobo Books. All suddenly no longer worked. The error means they will not open.
I tried removing these books and re-downloading, however this gives the error message "Unable to download - error getting licence. Licence server communication problem: E_auth_bad_device_key_or_pkcs12".
I have checked, my account is authorised on this PC. I am running Windows 8.1.
Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Eleonore,
Please try the suggestions mentioned in the thread: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1231290
For some users de-authorising and re-authorising ADE using the Adobe ID and password seemed to do the trick.

  • E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12 and Kobo ePubs

I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.3 and Adobe Digital editions 3.0. I have been able to download ePubs from Google Play Books using the acsm files I get from Google with no problems.
    Enter Kobo.
I bought my first Kobo eBook, and now I want to download it as an ePub. So, I select that option from the Kobo website, and an acsm file is downloaded to my Mac. I click it, ADE opens, but then I get the E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12 error. I can't download the ePub at all.
Any ideas as to why this isn't working with Kobo, though it works with Google Play books?
    Thanks!

Two possible solutions (both apply to Mac and Windows).
Unfortunately, ADE is so random in its errors and error messages I can't promise either will work for you,
but others have found one or the other works for that error message.  Good luck
    Two possible solutions ...
    1) ~~~~~
Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state.
Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help.
Unfortunately, it often then gives misleading error messages about what is wrong.
A common incorrect message informs you that the ID is already in use on another computer and cannot be reused.
This can often be resolved by completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to the Library screen on ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).
Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your (old) Adobe ID.
In extreme cases on the mac, the following extra step has helped some people.  Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash. If you are using 10.7, see Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1265248?tstart=0
    2) ~~~~~~~~~
There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1).  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

Some people have found ADE trying to upgrade automatically.
It appears (not 100% sure) that if you install ADE2.0 as a new install (not as an upgrade) that your 1.7.2 will continue to run.
Probably best to say no if 2.0.x installation asks if you want to migrate your library.

  • E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12 after Prior Success using Digital Editions. I've tried everything the forums recommend already.

I keep getting E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12 even though I've had success many many times on my mac. I've updated, uninstalled and reinstalled, unauthorized and reauthorized both the nook at the Digital Editions. What else can I do to read my library book? Through overdrive I can read the download on my phone, so there is no problem there. Why can't I read it on my computer???? I don't understand why this just started happening after many uses. I even tried clearing out Every single associated file... nothing...

I was able to figure it out using the help of another user who helped me REALLY deauthorize and then reauthorize my ADE. It worked, and my library books are back on ADE, AND I can reauthorize Nook properly (I was getting an error)!! The following is by a Staff Member Dominic Michael
"Please try the below steps (read the note section before clearing the registry):
    Mac:
Deauthorize ADE. To do so, navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to trash.
    Authorize ADE again.
    Windows:
    Click Start > Run.
Type regedit and then press Enter. The Registry Editor opens.
In the left pane of the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adept
Right-click the Adept key and click Delete.
In the Confirm Key Delete dialog box, click OK. ADE is deauthorized now.
    Authorize ADE again.
    Note:
Deleting the registry will deactivate all ADE authorization credentials on this computer. You will then be able to open eBooks on this computer only if you know your authorization credentials. Also you will not be able to open books that are fulfilled using anonymous accounts (authorized computers without an ID)."
    THANK YOU Dominic Michael

The Ebook seller had reset the ebook so I can download the link again and I have received the same message.  Today, October 13th, 2013, I deleted my Adobe Digital Editions App, downloaded it again, reinstalled it without any errors.  I can open up any of my exsisting books in my Adobe Digital Editions Library.  This is on an IMac, V 10.7.5, 4 GB memory, upgraded to larger hard drive several weeks ago.  Any suggestions would very much be appreciated.  I am a visually handicapped adult and can no longer read many paperback books, small fonts in books etc...

How To Change the Authorized Adobe ID
    http://www.adobe.com/go/digital-editions-createID
What do you do if your copy of Adobe Digital Editions is authorized with the wrong Adobe ID? This can happen if you’ve started using a different Adobe ID or you somehow messed up the authorization in the past.
If you’re trying to open an ebook when Adobe Digital Editions is authorized with the wrong Adobe ID, you’ll get an error message like: “License fulfilled by a different user” or something similar referencing licensing or authorization.
Important note: If you have some ebooks that do require your current authorization, those will become unreadable if you authorize with a different Adobe ID.
    deauthorize
The first thing to do is deauthorize Adobe Digital Editions. This will remove your current authorization.
    1. Open Adobe Digital Editions
    2. On your keyboard, simultaneously press the Ctrl, Shift, and D buttons (if on Windows) or the Cmd, Shift, and D buttons (if on a Mac)
    3. Click the “Deauthorize” button
After this you should close Adobe Digital Editions, and then open it again.
    re-authorize
If you’ve followed the steps above, your copy of Adobe Digital Editions is no longer authorized.
    Open Adobe Digital Editions
Adobe Digital Editions will behave as if you’ve just installed it, and will prompt you to enter your login information for your Adobe ID. Use the Adobe ID account information that you want to use to authorize Adobe Digital Editions.
