E-Business on HP Blades

We are just starting our release 12 upgrade. Our environment constist of web/forms on a W2003 server, and "everything else" on a HP Unix RP5470 server.
We are looking at evolving our platform to HP Itanium. We are looking at the c7000 enclosure and blades, with virtualization.
Does anybody run the E-Business suite on HP Blades with server virtualization? I'm looking for your feedback and experiences with it.
Logically, one would think it should work fine, provided an adequate amount of cpu and memory is allocated to Financials.
Thanks,
Colin Jensen

Colin,

  • BI Accelerator used in combination with SAP Business Objects Explorer

    Hi ,
If you use SAP Netweaver BWA and SAP Business Objects Explorer Blade, do you only get the full benefit with using SAP BO Explorer, or will the same queries ran in BEx 7 Anaylser also benefit from the in memory OLAP processing?
I'm guessing that the SAP BOE Blade will only benefit SAP BOE.
It would be great if the current BWA had the ability to in-memory the OLAP part of the processing, as then it might be worth the hassle of getting it installed.

When rebooting the system is unable to boot off the USB and goes to the second on the list, which is the hard drive. Clearly something is missing on the USB that it needs to boot. Does anyone have any idea. Below is a list of files on the USB stick.

  • Using Mac Pros as business servers

I'm advising a company that's setting up a new greenfield site. It's only about 50 people, at most, so the needs are quite light, apart from some medical imaging, though that's also not likely to be that heavy. The main application runs on linux.
Their IT people are very much old-fashioned old-school, microsoft mindset. They want lots of servers in a rack, with a SAN on fibrechannel, and tons of expensive windows software.
As far as I can see, their needs will be much better met with 3 x Mac Pros (1 on Mavericks, 1 on Linux and one as backup/failover) + thunderbolt connected 4TB drives x 4 ( 8TB for data, 8 TB for failover backup). With 21" iMacs for all 25-50 users. This seems to me massive overkill.
I've done a costing. The windows solution, without PCs included and without software, comes to 10 times the price of the above. So, from a simply cost point of view, the Mac solution is obviously much better. The performance of Mac Pros with direct thunderbolt storage is going to be far superior to the SAN solution.
The main objections I expect are going to be:
    - Reliability - are mac pros as reliable as rackmounted blade devices? - I've specified 3 x Mac Pros so there's a whole spare machine in case of failure, and the site will run quite adequately, on just the one, so there are actually two levels of fail-safe.
    - Support - IT will have to get linux & mac training
The problem I have is MTBF figures for Mac Pros vs Windows Blade environments. I'm certain that they are much better, but that's no good. Are there any published figures on reliability? And, while we're at it, TCO, price/performance?
It would be really useful to have something that works in a business case.

I know that - but, and this may surprise you, the Windows blade environment, with a SAN, that is being proposed costs 10 times more than a 3 x Mac Pro set up.

  • Best Practice E-Business 12.1.3/11gR2 Hardware Configuration

    Hi
We are in the design phase for a new install of E-Business 12.1.3 / 11gR2
From a hardware services point, what is deemed to be the "best practice"?
    Option 1
    1 x Web/Forms Node
    1 x Concurrent Manager Node
    1 x Database ode
    Option 2
    1 x web/forms/concurrent manager node
    1 x database node
    Option 3
    1 x web/forms/concurrent manager/database node
In the past I have always gone with Option 2 so that the database traffic is minimised between conc managers / database. That to me seemed most logical. But wanted to ask the oracle community about their thoughts
We are using redhat linux / Cisco Blades (USC/VMWARE) and all connecting to a NetApp FAS3270.
PLease advise if you pick this up.
    Thanks

Exactly what I was thinking but its nice to get someone elses clarity too.
The PCP option is certainly something I need to take into consideration - but with the new abilities of 12.1.3 cloning processes - it would be easy enough to split the admin Conc Nodes away at a later date should the requirement exist.
    i.e.
    Initially have 1 x forms/web server plus 1 x database / concurrent manager node
If we need to go to PCP and / or forms load balancing
we could easily go to 2 x forms / web server and add the Conc Node into it brining in PCP too.
I have to admist, the way Oracle have sorted the cloning process is 12 is very good indeed.
Do you agree?I totally agree :)
You just need to run preclone on the source apps tier node, then copy the files to the second node (add new node), and run adcfgclone.pl/adaddnode.pl scripts.

  • Multiple M91p's in business environment fail to boot

Since the beginning of the year, the small business I help out has had four thinkcentre m91p 7052a7u's fail in the same manner. The machines power up, but there is no boot activity. 2 of the computers have come back to life after cleaning dust build up, running diagnostics via a disc, power cycling many times. The diagnostics have not shown any issues, neither have the event logs, no viruses found. The 3rd computer's OS was trashed, and had to be restored, the hard drive showed no errors.
I started to do "preventive" cleaning of the other computers in the office, just to help exclude ventilation being an issue. Unfortunately, the 4th computer is one that had been cleaned and has now failed. I am going into the office to look at it today.
This business has 15 computers of this model; all out of warranty. Any insights, suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
(Just realized posted to the wrong group...trying to figure out how to move it.)
Moderator comment: Sorted it out for you.

The ones that won't boot, I would try changing the Power Supply. Looking at the components of my M91p tower, I determined the PSU was the weak link, and changed mine for a Corsair early on to ensure I had the most reliable system -- it's been and continues to be flawless (I do clean it of dust on a regular basis [a dust filter on the front intake would be a worthwhile addition Lenovo], when using compressed air, jam the fan blades so they don't over speed and damage the bearings -- happened to me an a previous psu.)
Use Speedfan or hw mon to monitor system temps, address any that are out of wack.

  • Using current dimmensions for new business areas with coarser granularity

    Hi,
I have a time dimension which has month, quarter, semester and year attributes.
I am creating a new business area in which each fact refers to a quarter (we have no monthly data). In this case I am considering two options:
    1) Using an attribute in the fact table that points to the quarter field in the dimension table (or creating a quarter code in the dimension table, and pointing to that code -there is already month-year code as primary key-).
    2) Creating a new dimension table with just quarter, semester and year.
What should be best? Is there another option?
    Thanks for yout help.

    Hi Sam,
I am not sure wheher memory is really a serious constraint anymore. Consider this:
    a) the price of memory today is pretty much at the price point of hard disks in the year 2000 (at least according to a study I saw). In 2000 we happily ran business systems without being worried about the cost of hard disks ... and that is where we are today with RAM. Sure, disks also became much cheaper, as did flash memory, but the speed benefits of RAM are so superior that it is worth investing in it.
    b) there are already 1 TB RAM blades available, and I think there is now a 2 TB RAM blade on the market (I heard about Samsung having one, and others may have one too)
    c) we indeed routinely achieve compression factors of 10-20 x. It all depends much on how full the table field is, and how homogeneous the content. A field "Currency" compresses great, a field with a "UUID (Universally Unique Identifier)" does not.
    d) customers typically only want to access this and last year's business data (and keep the rest just for reference)
So I think that it is quite possible to have the active business data even of the largest SAP customers completely in memory, at a reasonable price point. Sure, more expensive than disk ... but who cares about disk anymore (apart for backup)?
    Kind regards, Oliver

  • Strange - on one blade, /OVS is mounted twice

    Hi all
    Oracle VM 2.1.2
On a 5 blade HP C3000 Enclosure, I'm trying to provide the shared /OVS file system. On 4 of the blades, OCFS is working correctly. Strangely, on one of the blades, despite an identical /etc/fstab, after booting, /OVS is mounted twice:
    df output
    /dev/mapper/lun1-oraclevm 67356672 1402880 65953792 3% /OVS
    /dev/cciss/c0d0p3 67356672 1402880 65953792 3% /OVS
    */etc/fstab*
    root@hpblade2 etc# more fstab
    LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
    LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
    devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
    tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
    LABEL=SW-cciss/c0d0p5 swap swap defaults 0 0
    */dev/mapper/lun1-oraclevm /OVS ocfs2 sync,_netdev 1 0 # SAN*
    filerrac.ch.oracle.com:/vol/sct /mnt/sct nfs defaults 0 0
To my best knowledge, fstab is the only file defining filesystems to be mounted upon startup.
When I umount /OVS, the unwanted mount is removed, leaving the proper one. When I try to establish HA using VM Manager, the unwanted /OVS reappears....
On this blade, for a first quick test before setting up OCFS2, I've set up (and deleted thereafter) a VM Server (Server Pool Master, Utility Server, Virtual Machine Server). Maybe the unwanted mount of /dev/cciss/c0d0p3 stems from this trial? Is there another file that could cause the unwanted mount?
    Thanks a lot
    Tino

Anyway, I will check the solution path out and come back with outcome....
==> Quick update: Multipath does cause the problem. Commented /etc/multipath.conf out, booted.......and /OVS mounts like a dream. Haven't done the

  • Tuning 11i E-Business Application on RAC

    Hi all,
I’m converting our 11i E-business database to RAC and after setup a test environment (cloned from Production and converted to RAC) and done some load testing (Mercury Load Runner) I noticed poor performance (user response time) of the Application if compared to Production which consists only a db and a apps tier with lower spec then these test servers (4 T2 Blades – 2 for DB and 2 for Apps).
I’ve followed Oracle recommendations on Metalink Note 216205.1 but didn’t make much difference. At this stage I’m thinking it might be something on the Apps configuration but I’m trying to ensure database is well configured.
So I’m asking if you have any doc or tip specific to tuning 11i E-Business Application on RAC.
Btw, I’m using ASM for the database and Sun Cluster for Apps shared file system and it’s a 2 nodes RAC and 2 nodes for Apps – 1 node for Forms, Apache and Mwa and another node with Concurrent Manager and Reports
I have a TAR open with Oracle but looking for answers from real gurus 
    Thanks
    Eduardo.

The strange thing about the Niagara processor is it gets fantastic TPCC benchmark results, but can barely handle any real E-Business Suite load. We were getting frequent kernel exhaustion issues on this processor and Sun had us set filesystemio_options=setall, which seemed to help a little. It appears from the following note that it could be set with ASM.
Asynchronous I/O Support on OCFS/OCFS2 and Related Settings: filesystemio_options, disk_asynch_io
    http://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_database_id=NOT&p_id=432854.1
Apart from that, there are no RAC specific APPS tuning tips beyond the normal tuning methodologies (AWR, statspack, sqlarea etc).
The T2000 and T2 chips are really optimized for lightweight applications server (Apache) type workloads. Attempting to get heavy throughput E-Business Suite type processing load out of that processor is like trying to dig a fence post with a plastic spoon. It may work, but it depends on how soft the dirt (load) is...

  • Hp GbE2c Layer 2/3 Ethernet Blade Switch

I have encountered problem configuring Hp GbE2c Layer 2/3 Ethernet Blade Switch. I was able to use null modem cable to manually assign management IP address and manage/configure the switch, we are trying to implement VRRP high-availability set-up but we were unable to accomplish it so we return the previous/default setup of the switch by restoring the switch image & even make a hardware reset. Again we start all over again to complete the VRRP setup, by the fourth time we perform resetting the default settings, and now we cannot assign manually the IP address by using null modem cable with hyper terminal software and reset the hardware but to no avail. We check the serial port of a remote machine and it's properly working. So we are wondering what is the problem? the switch? the null modem cable is good, remote machine used is working properly.
Can anyone from HP that can help solve our problem..
