Help - just downloaded 4.0.3.110333 and connect Nook Simple Touch and get "unexpected error - unexpected error occurs: E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN"

Did ADE get updated as well at some point?
ADE 2.0 adds some features but seems to have quite a few issues that were not there on the older version.
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

So I've fixed the activation error, but when trying to get an ebook from the sample site I'm now getting "LICENSE_SIGN_ERROR." And I'm still getting the license error (CANNOT_OPEN) when trying to download library books, no matter how many times I de/reauthorize ADE, restart the computer and the program, and try to dl the book from the library website.
Thanks for any additional advice!
Edit, a few days later - still experiencing the problem, no matter how many times I try to download the library book I get the same error. Any ideas? Thanks @shreya

Adobe Digital Edition Error E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN

When I clic to an url link.acsm downloded from Kobo, I have this error. In french: erreur lors de l'obtention de la licence.(Communication error with the licence server). Impossible to download the ebook. My autorisation is ok,
I have 4.0.1.101645 version, on a pc Windows 7.

Found the root cause:
Digital Editions attempts to download ebook to temporary file
Temporary file (in %TEMP%\Digital Editions) cannot be created because of permissions [1]
Digital Editions errors out with a not very helpful "E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN" result
Workaround:
- Reset the NTFS permission of the Temp folder and below to include your user, for example with this approach (using %TEMP% as folder name, e.g.,
takeown /f "%TEMP%" /r
icacls "%TEMP%" /reset /T
[1] The permissions for the entire Temp folder have been changed by some program, removing the user from the permission list. This may be an Adobe problem itself, as explained in this post, but has not yet been verified. Resetting the permissions makes Digital Editions work as expected, until the permissions are changed back again.

Hi there,
i downloaded an ebook and want to add it to my adobe digital edition library to transfer it to my ebook reader. But when i try to add it, this message comes up:
"Fehler beim Abrufen der Lizenz; Lizenzserver-Kommunikationsfehler: E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN" (i guess in english it's "licence-server communicationerror" or something like that xD)
I already deinstalled and installed the adobe digital edition anew but the error message is still there. Hope you can help me

ERROR Message "UNABLE TO OPEN" and "E_IO_Cannot_Open"

Trying to download 6 ebooks from Hive and I can download the acsm file but when I click that I get an error message "Unable To Open" and "E_IO_Cannot Open." The computer is authorised and uses Win 7 with ADE 3. I tried ADE 4 but no better. I have an older PC using Vista and ADE 2 and that will download okay but it is constantly being used so it is not convenient. Does anybody know what's wrong? Thanks.

To try to help you, please, could you give some more informations ?
- the operating system (XP/Vista), the edition ( Pro/Home...) and the service pack
- usually, the installer installs the both files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Sql Server\Samples. Is there any change in the location or have you moved the both files ?
- could you check with the files explorer , that the 2 files are read-write and not read only( find one file, right-click on it, properties and in the 1st tabpage, you should see a checkbox read-only ( if checked , unchecke it ) ?
- have you Sql Server Management Studio Express Edition ( at least SP1 ) ?
If no, download it and use it to attach
in the object explorer,
click on your instance to expand it
right click on databases
in the contextual menu, click on attach
in the new form,click on add
you arrive on a second form : find your file , click on it, and OK
it's the simplest way to attach ( the sp_-attach_db is complicated to type )
the error messages are sometimes more clear in SSMSEE than in Sqlcmd
Try also to attach ( thru SSMSEE or Sqlcmd but in using the windows authentification )
NB: i hope that you are not trying to attach AdventureWorks on a remote instance and on a remote computer ( it would explain access denied )

I encountered this problem when trying to download a book from our public library on my new NOOK. It is our second one. Am wondering if having two active NOOKs, one with my husband as primary user and the new one with me as primary user is the cause.

Presumably you transferred the work file using Explorer or similar, not ADE (digital editions)?
You can transfer non-DRM .pdf files the same way.
If you are trying to transfer from ADE, are you sure that you have authorized the Kobo from ADE for your Adobe ID?
Normally it should give a different message in that case; but ADE messages are erratic, usually incomprehensible and often plain wrong.

Unexpected Error E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN

I HAVE TRIED TO OPEN MY Adobe Digital editions program after downloading a book from Kobo but get the above message.
I am using Windows 8 on my PC
I have tried removing and re-installing the program. This did not solve the problem.

ADE2.0 can work on Windows 8, but it has all sorts of odd behaviour regardless of operating system.

There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1). Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

Some people have found ADE trying to upgrade automatically.
It appears (not 100% sure) that if you install ADE2.0 as a new install (not as an upgrade) that your 1.7.2 will continue to run.
Probably best to say no if 2.0.x installation asks if you want to migrate your library.

Error trying to add Google Play purchased book

I'm encountering an error that I'd appreciated advice on.
I have a Google Play book I'm trying to add to Digital Editions. When I try to open the .acsm file, I get the error: "Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN"
After looking at reports of similar errors, I've de-authorized & re-authorized and have uninstalled ADE & installed older versions (1.7.2, 2.0, 3.0) and get the same error in each version. I've also tried ADE on two different computers (one running Windows 8 and one running Windows 7).

I got the 4.0.1 version working on my Windows 7 machine. I uninstalled again, and then scoured out every Digital Editions related file and directory I could locate in the user and app settings/data subdirectories. Rebooted. Re-installed 4.0.1. Started ADE up, authorized the computer and was then able to add books. No network settings were changed. No proxy servers were running. 4.0.1 ADE on my Windows 7 now adds books from .acsm files.
Still getting the same E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN error on my Windows 8 machine after trying the same process. I suspect whatever files were lurking after uninstall that I managed to purge in Windows 7, and were causing whatever conflict leading to the error, are still out there somewhere in the file system.

Cannot transfer new files or open old ones

I get this every time i try to transfer a book to my kobo. I had adobe digital 1.0 this morning and updated it to 4.0 this afternoon and now i cannot do a thing and most of my books tell me now that i do not have permission to read them!! (it states ii need a adobe password)

As far as I know, the problem is entirely unreproducable. It can happen at any time, from 5 minutes in of using photoshop to over a few hours. The problem has been posted there, and staff have said that it isn't photoshop at fault, but something else.

Eio cannot open

i get E_IO_CANNOT_OPEN error when starting up. then it freezes. have to ctrl+alt+delete to get out. tried reloading after uninstalling. still the same?

We need system info and an exact description of what you are trying to do. The error would suggest that ADE cannot communicate with your e-reader device, which for all intents and purpoises is a systemic issue. Could be anything from a flakey USB bus to whatever....
