E-Mac Reboot probem

I have an e-mac, about 4 years old ... When I power up all I get is a question mark blinking inside a folder, if I press Shift F. If I restart holding the option key down, I get a gold padlock, a place to enter a password, (non will work), for the accounts that seem now lost ... the mouse pointer appears but will not move.. It is a frozen screen. I did manage to get the restore CD in at one point, but cannot seem to get it to open. (It is now stuck in the CD Tray) I'm getting the feeling this is the end of the line for this emac short of some major repair .... Any help would be most appreciated

Hi DenverSteve!
Run Repair Disk using the instructions posted below, and post the results.
The disc is already inserted, so restart while pressing the C key.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

Your graphic card is damaged. This could be related to extensions, but the kernel panic gives you the message that your graphic card has failed.
You can only make a backup of your files with Time Machine or Disk Utility's Restore feature, and take the iMac to an Apple Store or reseller. Your computer has got the graphic card soldered into the logic board, so this will be a very expensive repair

Why does my mac reboot on its own?

Oh den.thed...  I saw your post this morning and I was so excited....  ran to the Mac and got to Energy Saver, and...  the checkbox is already unchecked.
Long story, I'll make it short.  Just got the Mac back after having the HDD replaced.  (It stopped working after less than 500 hours.)  This rebooting thing has been happening ever since I got the computer in 2010, and I was hoping it would coincidentally stop happening after having this crashed HDD replaced last week.  No such luck.  Still doing it, even after getting the computer back from Apple.  Two of my kids have macbooks, have used the cr*p out of them, and have had very few problems (nothing big).  I bought this Mac, to replace a dead Dell desktop that got very little use, and so far I am not sure I did the right thing.  Really wish I could get this "automatic" rebooting thing fixed.  (Reboots with no notice, while doing normal tasks - internet, word docs, etc.)  Thanks again for your help.  Let me know if I should try anything else.

when Mac reboots to Install XP black Screen Flashing Dash and I think its the press any key screen but on a Mac its Just Flashing Dash .
I press every button going and nothing happens.
and my only option is to turn off the mac to boot back in OSX.
MacBook trying to Install Windows XPSP3 disk.

I too am having the same problem. I do not know about the host of this thread, but I have been using a brick and mortar version of XP SP2 stand alone so it is not bundled with a computer like Dell, HP, etc.
I have run it before just fine but it was time to reformat the drive, 0'd everything out, reinstalled 10.5.2, upgraded everything, repaired permissions and them ran Boot Camp. Put in the XP disc and all I get is the flashing dash mark in the upper left hand corner. I actually have 2 legal versions of XP SP2 stand alone and the same result on both discs so it has to be something with the partioning? I also redid the partitioning at various sizes all with the same effect. No luck.
    Any new thoughts anyone?

  • I had my mac rebooted and now I can't find appleworks any idea where to download this?

I had my mac rebooted and now I can't find appleworks any idea where to download this?

"Rebooting" means restarting &, as fruhulda said, that won't cause things to disappear. If you mean you had the hard drive erased & the system reinstalled, you will have to find the original disk with the AppleWorks installer.

  • IPhoto frequently freezes during cropping. Requires hard Mac reboot.Running OS X Yosemite ver 10.10.1. Nov. 10, 2014 update to OS X has not helped.

I have had problems with iPhoto stability since the OS X Yosemite upgrade. Now running ver. 10.10.1. iPhoto freezes totally and frequently when using the cropping tool. The freeze requires a full Mac reboot. The November 10, 2014 iPhoto update has not helped.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

If you look back in the log and find these messages, what we're looking for are:
    1. any subsequent messages from backupd other than the inital error msg you posted
    2. any unusual messages especially just prior to the first message after re-booting. The first message after re-booting look like this: "localhost bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME nnnnnnnnnn'
One would hope that there are some messages just prior to the system re-booting itself that will give a clues as to what is causing the actual re-boot.

    flamebliss wrote:
yes wen i try booting in Safe Mode it behave the same. i have downloaded the combo update of 10.7.5 from another laptop, so how do i run it on my mac. THANKS for helping
The goal is to mount the combo update .dmg on the desktop and then open and run it. If you can't get to the desktop to begin with, that won't work. Another approach is to treat the Mac's hard disk as just another HD by using a second Mac and then connecting the problematic one via Target Disk Mode. See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661. Note that both Macs will need Firewire ports and you'll need a FIrewire cable to connect them. With the combo updater, one of the steps in the process is to select the drive you want to install the update on. Once you're successfully connected in Target Disk Mode, the problematic drive should appear in the list.
If that doesn't work or Target Disk Mode isn't possible, the only other solution is to boot into Recovery Mode; see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718. Note that once booted into recovery mode, you have access to Disk Utility, and you should try running Repair Disk after selecting the bad drive to see if something's wrong with the directory which could be fixed. When you select that drive, you should also look at S.M.A.R.T. Status at the bottom of the window. It should say "Verified." If it says Failing or Failed, the HD needs to be replaced.
If the HD is OK, all that's left that I can think of is to reinstall Lion using Recovery Mode. I hope you've maintained current backups or at least complete Time Machine backups. Of course, if you have a backup and the backup is bootable, you could boot from that, wipe the internal HD clean, and clone the backup onto the internal HD.

  • Macs Rebooting for No Apparent Reason

    Hi,
I have an iMac running OS X 10.8.2 at my office and a Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.2 at home, and for the past week or so the both have been rebooting themselves. The problem started with me walking into my office and finding the iMac computer at the login screen instead of my desktop screen saver. At first I didn't pay much attention since it it only happened once, then a few days later again. Now it happens almost every other day. My Mac Pro desktop at home is now rebooting, and has actually rebooted in front of me the past two days in a row just after I start the computer. I have run Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro on both systems and found nothing wrong.
Has anyone seen this problem or know of a possible Malware that could be doing this? I have looked into the few malware virsues that attack the mac but can not find any of the files that would be associated with some of the these types of malware, for example:
Intego reports one called "Pintsized", the following is an excerpt from an on line artical:
To check for this malware, open the following directories in the system to check for the presence of any of the below files:
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /System/Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchAgents

NOTE: You can highlight each folder path above individually, right-click the selection, and choose "Open" from the Services contextual submenu to open it in the Finder.
The use of an encrypted connection makes it more difficult to detect and trace, especially since it uses the common SSH protocol. In addition, the malware attempts to hide itself by disguising its files to look like components of the OS X printing system, specifically the following:
    com.apple.cocoa.plist
    com.apple.cupsd.plist
    com.apple.cups.plist
    com.apple.env.plist
    cupsd (Mach-O binary)
Any help getting to the bottom of this would be very much appreciated.

  • My mac reboots to recovery mode...help

I have a mid 2007 imac....upgraded RAM and installed Mavericks... Everything fine here. The other day I was working on some graphics and it completely froze...nothing responded so had to perform a hard reboot. After this, started having boot problems. Got the file and questionmark logo....made safe reboot....seemed to work. Reboot number 2....still doesnt work so i decided to reboot a gain into recovery mode....performed a disk repair from disk utility and said it couldnt repair. So i wiped the HD and tried to reinstall mavericks.....stuck at 0 (zero) seconds. waited for half an hour and had to hard reboot. Now my mac automatically starts into recovery mode and does not recognize my HD when i try to selct it as boot disk.....im desperate....someone please help. Oh and a mac store ain't an option because the closest one is +3 hours away (i live in a small town)

First boot your Mac into Single User mode by holding down the Command + S till then you hear the start up chime. After that you will see a bunch of white text starts appearing. Now when the Single User boot sequence got finished, you will see the command prompt at the bottom of the screen by a hash sign(#).Just tpye the following command there : fsck -fy
After that 'File system was modified' message will appear, then again run the above command until you see another message prompting that 'the volume appears to be ok'. Then type reboot to leave Single User mode.
Secondly, the startup disk system preference is the usual method to set this. As the setting is written to NVRAM, you could also just reset that and the mac should prefer the OS over the Recovery HD. If you can't select the Mac OS X, re-run the OS X installer.

  • Mac reboots automatically at times - crashing

    MBP i5. 8MB Memory.
From time to time while working on the MBP it just reboots itself.  Needles to say it just does it and all not saved work is lost.  I do not get a kernel panic at all.  it just goes gray and starts booting, the same way as if it had just been turned on.
In the log I see nothing other than the last entry being nothing suspicious at the time of the crash.  Next it shows the boot protocol (I am not an expert in reading this but do not seem to see anything funny).
There seems to also be no relationship as to what is being done at the time.
I did a hardware test from the DVD and this does not show anything either.
Rebooted in Safe Mode.  Did repair permissions.  It is still happening.
Anybody any idea as to what could be the reason as to why it does this.

    It just did it again:

  • Why won't Thunderbird open after Mac reboot?

Using Thunderbird on Macbook Pro for a couple of years, no problem. Recently moved house; same router and ISP but been getting invalid certificate messages on high-security sites ("Your connection is not private"). Changed two certificates to "always trust" and rebooted. Now Thunderbird won't respond, even after 2nd reboot as mentioned in another question - I've done my homework ;-)
thanks in advance for your help!

I mentioned the high security sites simply in terms of the general context of my problem. Thunderbird still won't open and I would very much appreciate someone's experience to understand why and what I need to do to get it to start again. All my emails are filed in Thunderbird and if it won't open, I can't work. Thanks for your help.

  • Power Mac rebooting all the time

Hello, I have a power mac g5 (2003 dual 1.8 ghz 8gb ram it was installed mac os x leopard 10.5.4 and I was offered to upgrade to 10.5.8.installation was successful and I was asked to restart my mac. Then it is loaded apple logo and after a  black screen and again restart Reinstall flash drive he does not see and does not boot into safe mode

We're stuck without an Install Disc or external drive to boot from.
Might be cheaper to get a 10.6 Install Disc.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

  • Files won't go on External after Mac Reboot

My External Hard Drive won't allow files to be put on it after I rebooted my Macbook Pro to factory settings. I still have all old files on my external, but it won't accept any new files after I reboot it. Any idea how I can fix this without losing what I currently have on the hard drive?

It may depend on what you meant by "I rebooted my Macbook Pro to factory settings." If you mean you erased the internal disk and installed a fresh copy of OS X, it may be that you removed the software that allowed writing on the disk and need to reinstall it. This would happen if the disk was formatted as NTFS, which OS X can read natively but not write without third-party software.

  • Mac rebooting into OSX instead of windows after unexpected shutdown

Got a bit of a strange issue here.
I've set a mac mini that is running windows server software to always boot into the windows partition through "startup disk" in sys prefs. It does this just fine when properly shut down or restarted, but always boots back into OSX if the power down is unexpected. Of course, one might say, well hold down the "option" key when it restarts and choose where you want to boot to, but this machine will often be left unattended, and it NEEDS to go right back into Windows if that happens.
    Your thoughts?

You are right, S3 mode for sleep seems to have changed with Windows 7 SP1
SSD seems to be linked to having problem for some
    Some go back to pre-SP1
It would probably take a while to find a fix, after someone knows what and how it happened and can be tested.
The likelihood of BIOS update on PC is real, happening on a Mac with EFI and / or SMC firmwware updates highly unlikely.
It is annoying. I thought it was a bad cable or wire, swapped out my PSU for a larger one I had sitting around. Moved Windows off SSD RAID to mechanical drive. I was beginning to think my motherboard was at fault, because two other systems, a Mac Pro running 7 SP1 and PC, both using single SSD for OS, do not exhabit any problem with sleep modes, even if I let it go longer.
    Disable or uninstall.
