E Mac start up question

My girlfriend was using her G4 E-Mac last night and suddenly Netscape wasn't closing so she tried restarting (force quiting) and then she manually shut it off. She went to restart the computer and it wouldn't come on (just the swirly start up screen).
We tried holding option + apple + R+ P and waiting for the four chimes but after waiting hours and trying it a few times nothing has prevailed.
Can anyone help us?

Try disconneting everything except the Apple USb keyboard and mouse, then How to Start Up in Safe Mode. Keep the shift key down until you see the Apple logo, then release the key and go make dinner or something --- it can take upwards of 20 minutes for Safe Mode to finish running a faceless version of Repair Disk before the login screen appears.
Netscape isn't quite as badly out-of-date as Microsoft Internet Exploer, but i's clse. Safari or Firefox or Camino would be better choices and all can import bookmarks etc. from Netscape.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair the disk.

Alternating mac face and question mark after i tried to install OS X 10.3

I have a Powerbook G4 and I tried to update my operating sytem from 10.2.8 to 10.3 but it froze. After I restarted it I got an alternating mac face and question mark. It just ejects the CDs I try to put into it except for the installation disk for OS X 10.1.3. When I put that one in a smiling mac computer come up then all this type comes across the screen, something about kernels and panic.
Please help me, I've got a project due soon.

it only changes when I insert the installtion CD of MAC OS X 10.3, but after the Apple logo appears, the screen went white and sometimes just blue, and it just won't work. Then after restarting, the alternating Mac face and question mark still appear.
i also tried the hardware test, after doing both of the tests, the result is consistently "passed". But after restarting, the same problem happens.
what should i do?

I do hope you have recent backup, because it look like your hard disk is failing. You can start up in Recovery Mode, and run Disk Utility to see if the disk can be fixed: OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

InDesign CS4 Mac starts but then freezes

Indesign CS4 Mac starts up but freezes from there. Trying to open files or create new ones results in the filename appearing at the bottom of the Window drop-down menu, but the file doesnt appear on-screen.
The same result occurs when opening files using "Open Recent File" as well as double-clicking the file in Finder or using "Open With" in FInder.
It couldnt have picked a worse time to crap out - right in the middle of an urgent contract!! Dang Cleetus!!
Any suggestions - apart from re-installing the program?

Tried renaming InDesign Saved data and InDesign Defaults and restarting InDesign - that didnt seem to fix the problem - after re-starting InDesign it seemed the program didnt write new versions of the files on re-start.
Will head back to the office & connect to my 23" display & see if ID works OK with that - that would confirm that it's a screen pointing issue?
Would re-installing ID help?

Mac starts up by itself at 1 am some nights... Can anyone help me stop this from happening based on reading my system log messages?

My Mac starts itself automatically around 1:00 am about ever other night. I don't want it to do that. I had a backup program installed once that was set to do the backup at that time, but I have long since uninstalled that program. Yet the computer still powers on automatically. I checked in the control panels and don't see it set to do that. I used the Console program to check my log, but I don't know how to read what it says. Perhaps there's remnants of that App you're not aware of... what was it?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

First check your login items under your user account and make sure that they are not selected to load. Then make sure that when you restart or shutdown that you don't have the "reopen windows..." checkbox ticked.

Note: A "clean reinstall" was one of the suggestions in [/questions/964132]. It means removing the Firefox application files and then reinstalling Firefox from a fresh download, as explained in the "Reinstall Firefox" step in [[Basic Troubleshooting]]. Only CD #1 I can think of is XP SP2?
Well, that is what backups are for, system restore image, WinRE CD (WinRE3 is latest).
XP: reinstalls I've read pretty much had to be done twice a year to keep Registry and system running properly.
Malware? maybe not current or something.

With Mac Pro, pull all the drives anyway other than the one with Windows and use Windows 7 Pro (dual cpu sockets, 64-bit).
Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 with EFI32 do have issues with booting and installing 64-bit Windows.
