E-mail default

I'm not receiving my e-mails from my postage stamp icon. I have to go online to the respective sites (earthlink and roadrunner) to retrieve e-mails).
There is a squiggly line icon in the "inbox." Thank you.
BOB P.

Hi Bob P,
Right click or Control + click on the Inbox, select Take Account Online, does that do away with the squiggly line?

Is it possible to change the mail default encoding to Unicode (UTF-8)?

What does that mean?  Are the recipients unable to read them?  Or are you talking about how they look on your machine, for example in the Sent folder of Mail app?
Normally Hebrew would always be sent in Unicode.
But it certainly cannot hurt anything to test adding a unicode dingbat to a test message and see whether it makes a difference for your problem.

  • TS3899 How do you change ios 8 mail default from imap to pop?

I scan e-mails on the road with my iPhone but only respond to emergent ones.  I work all non-emergent e-mail at home on my PC.   With iOS 8 software, my iPhone e-mail defaults to IMAP, which causes any e-mails read/opened on my phone to be automatically deleted from my PC's incoming mail.  That may be fine for some, but not for me... and I'm guessing a lot of other folks who have the same parallel mail arrangement.
My work-around is to archive all e-mails read, which I want to keep, and then resend them to myself when I get home.  What a bother.  With a pop account, all devices receive, send, and delete independently of each other.  That allows me to scan and delete unnecessary e-mails on the iPhone and work those I want to keep when I return home.  Yes, I have to delete unwanted e-mails again, but that is not a big deal.
The iOS software update needs to allow a pop, pop3, or IMAP incoming server option.  If it does, I'm unable to figure it out.

The response that suggests putting in a dummy e-mail works perfectly with the new iOS 8 software.  Thanks for the help.  I now have my phone configured back to a pop vice IMAP.
Incidentally, this all started when I noticed that a lot of my iPhone memory was being used to store some 500+ phantom e-mails that had already been deleted.  An iPhone forum string indicated that I needed to delete my email account and then reinstall it.  I did so and the phantom emails disappeared... but then my account locked into the IMAP format.
Thank you again for the help.

  • Iphone - mail - default address

I have set (ticked) my mail default address to what I want people to reply to...
However when I send an email from phone it default to another address...
    Help...

This is what it reads under the Default Email Account selection.
Messages created outside of Mail will be sent from the default account.
If you are accessing more than one email account with the iPhone's Mail app, the account or the account's mailbox that is selected at the time when selecting new email to compose a new message, that email account will be the default account selected for the message to be sent from. You can change this to another account from the email before the email is sent.
This setting has nothing to do with the email address you want recipients to reply to.

  • Mail defaulting to wrong account when replying

I have my wife and my accounts both in Mail. Sometimes, when I do a reply, it defaults as coming from my wife's account instead of mine (even though the message was to me), which is super annoying.
    The details are this:
    - message comes addressed to both my wife and I (and several other people);
    - message is manually moved from my account folder to a folder I made for that topic;
    - maybe a few weeks later, I select that message and click "reply all";
    - I type up my reply and hit "send", expecting the Mail program to default to either:
       a) the account the message was originally sent to;
       b) the first account in the accounts list under Preferences;
Either one would be my account, not my wife's.
The problem is people reply (not "reply all") to my message and it goes to my wife's account, not mine, and I don't see it.
How do I get Mail to default to use my account as the sender?
    Thanks!

These are possible causes for an e-mail to end up in the wrong place:
    -additional shortnames in WGM
    -forward set in WGM
-a .forward file in the user's mail directory
    -an alias in /etc/postfix/aliases
    -an alias in /etc/postfix/virtual
    -a sieve script
    -a bcc
    -a catchall account
-an autoforward by the original recipient
    Hope I didn't miss any.
You should check all these possibilities. If you still need help, post relevant log entries and the unmodified output of postconf -n

  • I cannot get a sound to play on arrival of new mail, default or custom.

I am running on a Linux box under CentOS 5.10. If I select a .wav file in a file browser screen it plays just fine. The same file is silent when used as a custom mail arrival sound. The default sound also does not play. As far as I know I have set up the sound selection in the General tab correctly. In an earlier version of Thunderbird the sound worked fine. My current version of T'bird is 24.7.0. How do I fix this problem?

"was it the same sound file...."
No. I picked another .wav file that sounds like the horn used for horse races.
"Thunderbird has a limit on the sample rate. is 16khz"
I have no idea how to determine this for the .wav file I selected. I know that the file plays when I select the file in the file manager screen, so I know that the default audio player handles it; similarly, if I open noatun and specify that .wav file to be played, it plays fine.
"Using KDE? Is the file the KDE default mail sound?"
No. I am running gnome, I believe, though the KDE programs that I invoke (such as games) run well also. I really do not know what the default mail sound is, as it has never played on this computer despite my efforts to get SOME kind of audible indication that email has arrived. On an older machine with an older kernel and an older Thunderbird I was able to get the default sound and substitute one I liked better.

  • Mail default applications for opening attachments

I recently had to install Open Office in order to be able to open those kinds of documents produced by my colleagues. The only problem is that it now becomes the default application for opening .doc, .xls and .pps documents. I have changed this using command+i on each type and making sure I selected the "change all" so that each app opens under it's appropriate iWork program, but I still have a problem with Mail.
In Mail, if I get a .doc attachment, clicking on it automatically launches Open Office. Worse, when I right-click and choose "open with", Open Office is listed twice at the top of the list!
I loathe Open Office with a passion, not least because of this situation, but also because it frequently crashes and is still bound to using xterm. Nevertheless, I have to keep it as my colleagues are all on Ubuntu Linux and insist on using it for spreadsheets (to be honest, Open Office is okay on Linux).
If only iWork apps could open OpenOffice documents... ah well.
Any solutions would be most welcome!

Here's how you can set your preference for which application to use on a given file type:
    1. select a file of that type
    2. press CMD-I to bring up the file information
    3. Click on the little triangle to expand the "Open With" section
    4. Select the application you want to use for that type of file
    5. Click on the "Change All" button
This has worked for me in the case where I have Parallels Desktop installed and it wants to use my Office 2000 installation under Parallels to open MS Word & Excel attachments. I changed these to be opened by NeoOffice, and it works both from the finder and when opening attachments in Mail.
    I hope this helps...

  • Can I set Mail default text color

Is there a way to set default text color for sent messages?  These settings don't seem to have any effect:

Only way I know how is to save a Draft with some character, even a space with color set & use that to Draft send.
Or maybe set a Favorite in CMD+t in Mail.

Actually there is a way. Go Preferences-->Fonts & Colours-->Message Font

i have a weird issue where the Preferences > General > Default Email Reader keeps getting reset to some Windows program (i run Parallels and windows 7 on the laptop). i /think/ it keeps getting set to a windows program but in any case it is never Mac Mail which is sort of inconvenient.
has anyone heard of such a thing or know how to get this to stay on Mail?
    TIA

thanks for the always great help. this is a good suggestion.
for some reason though when i get into virtual machine > configure > applications the pulldown for Email is "Open in Mac". i will try and see if there is some help on the parallels forum on this.
i guess i am correct in thinking that the only mail setting in mac OS is in Mail? i mean, now that i think about it i have Thunderbird loaded and Sparrow loaded. i don't suppose that somehow something in these email clients is causing mac to get confused...
just thinking out loud on this one i guess...

  • System deleting mail default settings

Each time mail updates its software the system automatically deletes my settings for my pop mail (which is the default) and replaces it with my @me account which I no longer subscribe to. Thus when I log in I am not connected to the net. This has happened three times. Can anyone help me with this - have I got some setting somewhere with @me as the default?

  • Opening Mail - defaults to m-box

My G5 runs Tiger 10.3.9. When I open Mail application the default page that appears is 'INBOX.mbox' with no sidebar or option to click 'mailboxes' to access my stored mail or new mail. In the past my opening page was my simply my inbox; how, why, and more importantly where did the setting change and how do I reverse it? Any ideas? Ta.

  • Mail default signatures deselected every now an then

I run signature sync via MobileMe to use them on iMac, MB, iPhone and iPad.
Now, since some weeks I experience that the signatures are the same from content, but lets say one or twice every week there is no default signature selected, so that I have to reselect it.
This happens on iMac and MB.
Its solvable but I hadn't had this problem since I started with the additional iMAC I newly bought. May be just an coincidence, may be a new MobileMe/OS-problem?
    Help would be very welcome.

Try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and this file and temporarily move it to the desktop:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings so be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.
If this fixes the issue, you can delete the original plist---if not and you want to short-cut making any needed settings as before, delete the fresh plist and move the original back to where it was.

  • Can't get Mail to stay as e-mail default program

I can't get Mail to stay as default e-mail program. It keeps switching back to Eudora even though I change it in Mail Preferences. How do I get it to stick?

    Ronnie,
Let's move on to removing and restoring preferences, in more complete fashion that can be done from within Mail. Quit Mail, and use the Finder to open Home/Library and locate the Mail folder -- duplicate the Mail folder and drag the copy to the Desk top for temporary backup. Locate the Preferences folder (Home/Library/Preferences) and find the com.apple.mail.com -- drag it to the Desktop. Try to launch Mail, and when it opens, re-enter your mail accounts information, but DECLINE to import anything. Mail should re-discover your account folders, and all other messages. Now set the default mail client to Mail.
    Post back.
